History
adopted into a small family - single dad, son and daughter - as a very small baby. sam doesn’t remember his real parents. he had an average scholastic upbringing, but the family moved so much that it made it hard to make long-lasting friendships. he did far better in schooling than his siblings, and often took textbooks home just to read them.
raised as a hunter, trapping and catching things to sell at the market. when the time came for it, his father would lead them on hunts for mythical creatures and smaller monsters. the man was not above poaching and dealing in monster parts, much to the grim dissatisfaction of the children.
sam’s brother grew to be hard as steel, never flinching at the gross necessities they were forced to commit to put food on the table. sam tried to be hard, but he was never going to be so cold. their sister refused to engage after a while, only sticking around to tend to their wounds, clean the house and cook their meals.
their father was tough on sam because he was “soft”. his older brother protected him from a lot of it, but never blamed sam for it. they were very close.
sam’s magic bloomed late. he was nineteen when he endured a painful transformation under the full moon. it was agony. he was confused, he was angry. but most of all, he was hungry.
leaving a trail of blood in his wake, sam turned himself in to the order despite protests from his father and brother. he was desperate to protect his family from whatever horrible creature he was destined to become.

Design Notes
Feral:
- blood spatter is a marking, not blood
- fuzzy, mane mid-length, kept in a messy bun
- tail long, loose
- black sclera
- sharp teeth but they don't protrude - kept behind his lips
- wolf form looks almost identical to his regular form ... just a wolf. no blood spatter marking on wolf body - it's just actual blood
Human:
- scars are the same
- shoulder-length brown hair, always half done up in a bun
- same wolf-gold eyes, but white sclera; looks tired
- muscular. dude's jacked, but like, in a tasteful way.

LYCANTHROPY
the hunter — sam’s senses are heightened by the latent effects of his magic. his hearing is sharp, his sight and observation skills are high, his sense of smell unmatched. rumour has it he can even smell fear on a person, like some kind of animal … beneath this, he suffers from something else: a hunger. it is influenced, he suspects, by the wolf within him.
the wolf — before his time at the order, sam was a slave to the moon cycles, and forced to change into the monstrous form of a ravenous wolf at the height of every full moon, driven by the hunger to consume whatever flesh he could sink his fangs into. with more discipline, sam is able to now somewhat control when he shifts into the wolf - however, emotional regulation is key, and if he finds himself reaching a fight or flight situation, it will force a change against his will.

magic use fatigues the caster [1]
becoming the wolf is, as one could imagine, utterly exhausting. catch sam tucked in a quiet corner of his library snoozing in front of a book.
magic use slightly impairs the caster's memory, so that they may not remember using it or be confused afterward. [2]
possibly the worst part of his magic, is that he can't remember what he does during his time spent as the wolf, and when he finally shifts back, he often comes to very disoriented and slightly panicked, as if waking from a particularly nasty nightmare.
