Yumeno
01 — Profile

Orphaned when she was young, Yumeno has always believed that she's meant for some kind of "higher purpose" -- even if she's not entirely sure what that higher purpose should be. Her nervousness hides just how childishly chuuni she can be, at times. It's hard for her not to overthink the significance of every action that she takes.

02 — Personality

Even though she'd bristle at the word, Yumeno can best be described as somewhat immature (or even childish, if you want to be uncharitable about it). She suffers from chuunibyou syndrome, with an ego that borders on a god complex at times. Yumeno believes that she might be the most thoughtful, emotional twenty-year-old in the entire world, and that nobody else will ever understand how deep her thoughts run and how many insights she has the potential to revolutionize the world order with. It's easy for her to get lost in fiction, daydreaming about all the classic literature that she's read or comparing herself to the protagonists of different media franchises that she likes. There's a part of her that wants desperately to believe that she's some kind of "chosen one" -- even if she doesn't know exactly what her higher purpose exactly is.

With all that being said, Yumeno mostly comes off as... somewhat anxious, definitely nervous, and highly reserved. It's rare for them to speak or respond except when they're directly asked to or when they're absolutely certain that they have the right answer, not wanting anybody to prove them wrong or look down on her intelligence. She has the tendency to fidget with her hands, often feeling like people are watching her even when nobody's paying attention to her at all. While Yumeno wants to come off as intimidating, their short stature and generally-skittish personality makes it hard for them to do so. The scariest they get to strangers is when they're reeling off philosophy and theory off the top of their head -- revealing a surprising depth of knowledge for somebody seemingly as young as she is.

It's difficult for Yumeno to relax most of the time. The closest they get to doing so, ironically, is when they're putting on some kind of presentation or show, knowing that they have the attention of everybody in their immediate vicinity. Under the spotlight, she gains a sudden confidence in her own abilities, not wanting to risk the disapproval of anybody in the crowd. Yumeno loves getting praise from others, seeing it as an affirmation of how inherently "special" she thinks herself to be. At the same time, she takes any criticism she gets to heart -- purposefully directing her attention and effort into making sure that she never hears those types of negative comments ever again. Hardworking and genuinely wanting to impress, Yumeno puts all her effort into everything that she gets her hands on. She never wants anybody to see her at anything but her best.

03 — Background

Past

Yumeno had a happy childhood; even though she was raised by a single father, her father doted on her, allowing her to read and learn whatever she could get her hands on. She showed a natural aptitude for music and music composition when she was a child, and her father encouraged her to try dozens of different instruments. Yumeno learned everything from the piano to the harp, playing in grade-school orchestras while her father rented child-sized guitars for her to practice with. She loved singing the most, playing the lead vocalist in their elementary-school choir nearly every year. Even though she was shy, everyone -- even her teachers -- could see that she became a different person when she was finally put in her element.

Her childhood would be snatched away from her, however, when she contracted viscerosis as a child. Her father was an EQE user, and, even though he thought that his glove had just been malfunctioning, it had actually become infected with viscerosis particles. Coming home early from school -- and before her father had a chance to put the glove away or get the problem diagnosed -- she'd tried it on, wanting to be like the espers that she was always reading about in books. Yumeno quickly became incredibly, deathly sick. While the prompt treatment she received at the hospital certainly prevented it from spreading far, she was still bedbound for weeks, having permanently lost her left eye.

For reasons that Yumeno still doesn't know, after her sickness, her father never came to pick her up from the hospital. She has plenty of hypotheses: he felt guilty that it was his glove that she put on, he was worried that the hospital bills would be too much for him to pay off, he feared that the disease would spread to him, he was murdered, killed, blackmailed, something. For all intents and purposes, he vanished off the face of the earth, despite the widespread search for him that was conducted within the city. Having no relatives and no emergency contacts, Yumeno was eventually left to an orphanage -- where she withdrew from nearly everybody around her.

Yumeno turned to stories for solace, quickly losing herself in fantasy and fiction and spending nearly all of her time either reading, drawing, or watching movies on her own. She quickly became entranced by the idea of being some kind of "chosen one," who had her father taken away from her because they wanted to stop her from fully realizing her own potential -- even if she didn't know what that "potential" was meant to entail.

Determined not to let her supposed oppressors stop her, she reluctantly went back to making music, armed with nothing but her old laptop and whatever programs she managed to pirate online. Dragging her high school grades out of the gutter, Yumeno would eventually apply as a philosophy major to the nearest university in Atriven City -- wanting to live in a dorm, for once. Even though she still hadn't discovered the secret powers that she believed herself to have, she was sure that she wasn't going to discover them within the walls of her orphanage.

Yumeno had her first group of friends only when she started college: Celeuxe, who she's relieved shares the same taste in media as her; Jaime, who she's constantly receiving encouragement from; Lisza, the only person she trusts to give her media recommendations; and Dioe, her favorite person to discuss literature and theory with outside of her classes. While she was intimidated by the prospect of singing again, she would eventually cave, forming the band Grimwreck with Celeuxe and Jaime. When Jaime brought up the idea of joining the Virion Project as interns, Yumeno would immediately agree -- seeing the proposal as a step towards that higher purpose that she still believes fate has in store for her.

Virion Project

The second that Yumeno stepped foot into the Virion Project's headquarters, she was immediately starstruck: the high-roofed foyer, the uniforms that people were wearing, the signs of authority that Set, their division head, seemed to embody... All of it seemed like something straight out of the fiction that she was so used to reading. While she was never the most physically fit, she knew that she would have to compete -- or at least match up -- with Celeuxe and Jaime if she wanted a chance at getting Set's approval.

Even though it was difficult for her to make time to go to the gym on top of her internship, her band, and the readings that she had to do for her major, Yumeno's ready (with Jaime's help in scheduling) to actually figure out what she's meant to be doing and answer the everpresent question of why her father ever disappeared on her. It's hard for her to focus on her goals entirely, though, given how nervous Set's been whenever they've been sent out on missions. It was fine at first, and Yumeno could handle what little fighting they did back then. What's been making the latest ones feel so different... or so much more dangerous?

Fighting Style

While Yumeno has the least physical fighting experience out of the three interns in the Containment Division, she's relatively agile: highly sensitive to sound and capable of correcting her balance with her tail, it's difficult to actually hit her (even if, in turn, it's hard for her to actually get any hits on her opponents). She tends to try to tire out her sparring partners, getting them annoyed or complacent enough that they make a mistake that she can capitalize on. Her primary weapon, a chain whip meant to snag or trip opponents, has EQE technology embedded into its handle, allowing it to artificially extend its reach with the addition of jagged ice.

Yumeno uses her essence the least, as well (outside of channeling it through her whip, of course). Finding it difficult to quickly summon or form ice without the help of her weapon, she primarily uses her control over water in an attempt to blind or surprise her opponents, throwing scalding water at their faces in order to get them to trip up or stumble or filling the room with steam whenever she needs to escape a fight. She's tried to literally make people slip by freezing water underneath their feet, but finds it too unreliable to use regularly (given how she runs a risk of tripping, herself, if she loses track of the terrain in the middle of a fight).

04 — Trivia

  • She's the singer and songwriter for the band that she formed with Jaime and Celeuxe, named Grimwreck. While she doesn't sound like it when she's normally talking, her voice can get surprisingly growl-y and raspy, the way that most rock band vocalists can.

  • Has an incredibly small YouTube channel where she makes UTAU covers using her custom voicebank, "Dorimuloid"/Dreamloid. She covers a lot of songs with middling, monotone ranges because she can't quite get the tuning right on super high or super low notes.

  • She's incredibly invested in bullet hell video games like The Binding of Isaac and Touhou. At her worst (in high school), she could spend hours focusing on them, trying to set time records and high scores in both.

  • Most of her drawings are done either on the edge of her notebook papers or with the pencil tool in MSPaint. She keeps a lot of her doodles copy-pasted in one huge Microsoft Word document, rather than saving them as separate images.

  • Even though she can't drive, it's always been her dream to ride a motorcycle... the way that Shadow the Hedgehog does. She saves a lot of her money so that she can afford one in the future.

  • It's easy for her to space out and lose track of time, especially when she's stuck on particular theoretical or philosophical dilemmas. Hours can pass every day without her even noticing.

05 — Relationships

jaime.gif
college friend

”Oh... Jaime's alright. I like... I mean she's okay, she's just really enthusiastic, I'm not that enthusiastic... I mean it's hard to be, I'm always thinking about... so many things, she is too, but not the same things I do...”

If Yumeno's being honest, she's a bit intimidated by Jaime. She's not sure why Jaime showers so much attention onto her -- because as far as she's aware, she almost seems to be Jaime's exact opposite. A part of her looks up to Jaime for always being so positive, managing to put on a smile no matter what situation they find themselves in.

A bigger part of her wishes that she had Jaime's intensity, given how Jaime almost seems like she has everything figured out in a way that Yumeno doesn't. She hates to admit it, even to herself, but there's a part of her that harbors a small crush on Jaime -- thankful for the fact that Jaime's willing to drag her out of her room, all the time.

celeuxe.gif
college friend

”He can be a lot... He likes the same things that I do, so he's not all bad. I like the names that he comes up with for our songs... He understands the themes and motifs and the metaphors I'm using to show loss... the transience of grief... you know, what I'm getting at.”

While Yumeno's perfectly aware that Celeuxe outmatches him in terms of... anything physical, of course, it doesn't stop her from still wanting to show off to Celeuxe in the few ways that she knows how. She loves it whenever Celeuxe tells Yumeno that he's been listening to one of the songs that she sent him, or that he really enjoyed the comic that Yumeno recommended him.

To Yumeno, Celeuxe is one of the few people that "gets" how deep her lyrics are and how much she's trying to convey with each of their (incredibly edgy) rock songs. She'll never tell Celeuxe, but Yumeno's definitely shaped some of her compositions around what she knows Celeuxe likes to listen to.

set.gif
SET
idol

"S-Set's so... she's so cool. I mean... she's so good at programming, and I wish I could fight like her, and everybody respects her... I mean, in a way that you don't respect... you don't respect normal people the way you respect Set, I mean..."

For all intents and purposes, Set is exactly the kind of person that Yumeno wishes she could grow up to be. She's highly skilled, focused to death on her work, always walks and acts like she knows what she's doing, people are scared of her and treat her like a leader... Given how badly Yumeno wants to be treated as some kind of Chosen One, she can't imagine a better idol than Set to look up to.

As a result, Yumeno is incredibly jumpy whenever Set's near her, not wanting to do anything to make Set look down on her or critique her. Every time she gets praise from Set, she literally walks around lighter on her feet, sometimes writing down exactly what Set says in her notes app on her phone.
