Basics

"Don't worry about me, I'm fine!"

Absalom Hayes is an airship captain famed for his stoicism, seeming lack of emotion, strong moral convictions and personal code of honor.

Is actually a very sweet person who gets horribly attached to people and feels very strongly about things, his face just doesn't do The Emotion Thing very well.

Airships in his universe are magically bonded to their captain, controlled by a combination of said magical bond and good old-fashioned sailing, and may or may not be sentient, depending on whom you ask. His ship is called ACV Equinox; it's legendary for being extremely responsive and incredibly maneuverable and fast... and for accidentally killing off captains by means of magical exhaustion.

Absalom adores his job, his ship and his crew. The crew loves him right back - every now and then somebody slips up and and calls him "mom", which he generally politely ignores, but secretly gets horribly sappy about.

Details

Seems a lot taller than he really is, mostly because he radiates authority, but also because he tends to hang out with even shorter people. Great posture. Slender, quite wiry but not visibly muscular

Basically 90% sharp angles. Stereotypical Villain Cheekbones. Big, dark, piercing green eyes that tend to stare rrrrright into your soul in a deeply unsettling manner, especially paired with his constant deadpan expression.

Straight, silky, very dark brown hair, approximately shoulder-length. Nobody quite knows how it constantly stays untouched by the strong winds up on his airship, but it almost always does.

Owns one outfit in triplicate - said outfit being his uniform - and two simple linen nightshirts, and that's pretty much it.

His uniform looks impeccably clean from a distance, but from up close all three copies sport a variety of patched holes and re-dyed areas, because Captain Hayes has the worst habit of getting shot, stabbed, set on fire, thrown down cliffs... you get the idea. It's all very well fixed, however, and barely visible.

Absalom, is a pretty wild collection of contradictions: The stern, competent captain, the calm and collected stoic, nearly expressionless and honestly almost creepy - but also such a genuinely, deeply nice person, gentle, patient and kind and full of love for everybody and everything, who may not be showing much emotion, but has ALL THE FEELS, ALWAYS, who’d stop the world to help an injured animal or try to save a damaged plant, whose dream would be settling down with the man he loves and living in a tiny cottage with a huge overgrown garden full of wild roses, who would give his life to save his crew from danger, but who is also dangerously intelligent, the farthest thing from naive and perfectly capable of being incredibly ruthless and calculating, yet chooses not to be, who looked at history and the world around him and concluded that the universe is a cold, uncaring place full of needless cruelty, and decided that he was having none of that.

Somewhere deep down lurks a surprisingly wry sense of humor - Absalom generally keeps his mouth shut, but he's always there, watching, observing, finding patterns in the actions of his companions, and he's pretty good at expressing those observations in a poignant if somewhat uncomfortably honest manner.

He's got a bit of a blind spot for romance, though - Absalom dearly and honestly loves a lot of people, but almost never romantically, so he has preciously little experience. It takes him years to figure out that he's in love with Severin, and he still hasn't realized the the feeling is mutual. Then again, to his credit Severin was a babbling, heart-eyed mess from the second he first spotted Absalom, so he's never had a chance to observe Severin without a terrible crush on him.

Absalom loves reading and knowing things, and is an endless source of trvia. His two favorite topics are history and botany - especially botany; he's also very good at gardening. Unfortunately, both his former and his current occupation involve being as far away from plants as it gets... but as soon as he sets foot on solid ground you can find him fawning over some random roadside weeds.

He is B A D at taking his own safety and well-being into account, which is honestly pretty damn unfortunate, since he physically has to fly the ship and without him they're all Super Stuck

Basically, he's always thinking, planning, calculating, but has a bit of a tendency to miss the obvious.

Absalom is good at his job, but he's most certainly not infallible.

Absalom's lack of visible emotions is often misunderstood, particularly in conjunction with his Evil Cheekbones (TM), "I-am-staring-into-your-soul-and-judging-your-deepest-secrets"-gaze and his unfortunate habit of moving very quietly and appearing unexpectedly in strange places like something out of a horror movie.

Meanwhile, Absalom quietly dreams of the open skies and maybe, sometimes, of settling down in a small cottage by the sea, with a huge overgrown garden, the love of his life by his side, surrounded by flowers and maybe a cat.

Born in a small village by the sea, in the south of Coversano, the country he is from. His dad was a navy officer of halfway decent standing, his mom was a tailor. He also has a younger brother.

When he was 11, his dad died. His mom was a very good tailor, but there's only so much business you get in a village in the middle of nowhere, and his mother steadfastily refused to give up her house and move to the city.

Money grew tight, and when Absalom was 14, he left and joined the navy as a midshipman (of his own volition and against his mother's wishes, though she didn't protest as much as she could have) to reduce the financial strain on his mother and brother, giving up his dreams of being a teacher along the way.

His first captain was competent and fair, and recognized Absalom's many strengths very quickly - along with the unfortunate weaknesses.

He rose through the ranks at a pretty decent pace, becoming a Lieutenant aged 20 and a Captain at age 27 or so, but was never truly happy in the navy - killing people disgusted him, enemies or not.

When he was 17, his mother suddenly died. He stayed in the navy, not knowing where else to go. A year and a half later, Absalom's brother ran away, sick of his doting but constantly absent brother and sick of being cooped up in an emty house, and Absalom never heard from him again.

In his early 20's, shortly after passing his Lieutenant's Examination, he first met Severin, the later love of his life, at a social function. They became very close friends, and carried on a written correspondence for the next decade-and-a-half, even though this was extremely difficult due to their respective jobs.

At around the same time, Absalom saved the later crown prience (then just a regular prince) Valère from an assassination under great personal risk, but declined any sort of reward or recognition, out of humility and a desire to avoid too much attention.

The princeling was only five years old then, but already as prone to scheming and as clever as he would always be - he had an uncanny ability to find Absalom whenever he was in town and rope him in as an unoffocial babysitter. Neither of them knew the Queen was aware of it, but of course she was - she was Valère's mother, after all.

Eventually, when Absalom was 32 years old, the ship he was captaining sank under mysterious circumstances. The admiralty seemed to know more than they let on and absolved him of any and all responsibility for the disaster, but they also hinted that it would be wise for Absalom to leave the navy.

He did, and ended up with the Royal Postal Service instead - the Princeling may have had a hand in it, but nobody will ever be able to confirm or deny that.

After losing his ship, he also lost contact with Severin, whom he had fallen in love with over the course of their correspondence - Severin had encountered problems of his own, and was temporarily assumed to be dead.

Years later, the Princeling is abducted, and somebody decides it's a good idea to set Absalom on his trail, and that's where the main story starts.

  • In his world, sexual orientation works a lot differently; not nearly as rigid and generally not labeled, so it's pretty hard to stick a label on him by our standards. He ends up with a guy, though, so he's at the very least Not Straight.
  • Food-wise, Absalom is probably the least picky person ever and will eat just about anything that’s vaguely edible with barely more than a shrug - from the awful cooking attempts of his crew to obscure traditional dishes. His seafaring days have left him with a strong aversion to sauerkraut, however. He really, really hates the damned stuff… but even on an airship, he still can’t escape the curse of the fermented cabbage.
  • As ~The Captain~, he has to maintain some pretense of detached professionalism: His very soul could be breaking into a million pieces and nobody would ever know. If anything, he’s going to channel all the emotions he can’t show into doing his job with a terrifying intensity and a perfect pokerface. That said, he gets very attached to everybody and everything (and everywhere), and is generally much more emotional than he lets on, so ‘this crewmember is leaving on good terms for fun reasons’ falls squarely into ‘internally crying’ territory, because he’s going to miss them so much.
  • All in all, he does a pretty good job with that whole detached professionalism thing, but the crew has got him figured out pretty well, anyway. Thus, him getting called "mom" with hilarious frequency.
  • He prefers non-violent solutions and would much rather disarm than kill an opponent - frequently enough, it works out, but occasionally it gets him stabbed and almost thrown over board.
  • A Father To His Men: Although not all of them realize it, since he’s rather stoic by nature.
  • The Men First: To the point where it’s impractical.
  • Morality Chain: To Valére, Doc Maur, occasionally Severin....
  • The Quiet One: Perfectly capable of making small-talk and being generally quite amiable and conversational. Usually can’t be bothered.
  • The Reliable One: Again, to a ridiculous extent.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Pretty well hidden, but occasionally he does get out the snark - although he never aims to hurt anybody’s feelings. He’s probably the world’s gentlest snarker.
  • First Gray Hair: Half a dozen at most, so it really doesn’t show, but he noticed.
  • The Stoic: His usual reaction to things is a raised eyebrow at most. He’s not doing it to be cool and doesn’t view showing emotions as inferior, he’s just not very emotive by nature. Doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have feelings, though - and he most certainly can be Not So Stoic at times.
  • Tranquil Fury: His usual reaction to somebody doing something dangerously foolish - but only reserved to situations of (or directly succeeding) immediate, physical danger. Also his usual reaction to somebody threatening the crew. Or the ship.
  • Berserk Button: Do not attempt to hurt the crew, ship or anybody else he holds dear, or there’ll be hell to pay.
  • Death Glare: His favorite way of keeping the crew in order. It works very, very well.
  • Martial Pacifist: Really hates hurting people. Is also very very good at hurting people.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Wears mostly dark gray/black, has dark brown hair, is a master of the Death Glare, can look very sinister at times... and is probably the nicest person aboard the ship. Including the ship.
  • Disappointed In You: Whenever a crew member screws up big time. Surprisingly effective.
  • Cool Old Guy: What the crew sees him as. Even he himself tends to forget that he’s really only 37 years old.
  • An Officer And A Gentleman: ...at least in his Navy days. Not a gentleman by birth: His mother was an artist and illustrator, his father a Navy captain.
  • I Ain’t Got Time To Bleed: Absalom has a fairly high pain tolerance and just tends to ignore pain anyway, if he has better things to do. Once spent an hour or so overseeing the cleanup after a pirate attack until somebody noticed that he was leaving a trail of bloody footprints all over the deck.
  • Post-Victory Collapse: Increasingly prone to it for... uh, reasons.
  • Finger Tenting: Has long slim hands that lend themselves well to some nice, sinister-looking finger steepling. Probably one of the reasons why strangers don’t trust him.
  • Disapproving Look: Very, very good at it..
  • Reverse Arm Fold: Was perpetually shouted at as a midshipman for keeping his hands in his pocket - now often defaults to this.
  • Creepy Shadowed Undereyes: To varying degrees. Can you really blame him?
  • What Beautiful Eyes: Beauty is obviously in the eyes (ha!) of the beholder - people either tend to find them beautiful, or vaguely disturbing. They are very, very vibrant dark green.
  • Green Eyes: Very dark, very green, very memorable.
  • Heroic BSOD: A few times; f'ex after he lost his ship, and after his brother ran off.
  • Heroic Safe Mode: What he usually goes into when he’s under too much stress.
  • Safety In Indifference: Subverted. Everybody assumes this is what he’s doing (I may have mentioned that before; he isn’t exactly emotive), and it would probably be logical, given that most people he knows and cares about end up dying horribly... but he still gets emotionally attached to everybody way too quickly and cares so, so much about everyone.
  • Stiff Upper Lip: His motto is pretty much “panicking won’t get you anywhere - solve the problem first, maybe panic later if you still feel like it”. Unfortunately, he’s speaking from experience.
  • Sugar and Ice Personality: of the Stoic variety. Mostly because of his role as captain and his tendency to not emote very much regardless of what he’s feeling, which can make him come across as downright creepy - he’s actually the nicest person on the ship, full of undying patience and compassion and also a huge cuddle bug if he thinks it’s appropriate.
  • The Heart: A great big pillar of calm, emotional support and occasionally a shoulder to cry on.
  • Tall, Dark and Snarky: Tall only compared to the rest of the crew, and his snark tends to be fairly good-natured.
  • Parental Abandonment: of the death-induced variety - his Navy Captain dad died when he was barely a teenager, making him join the navy himself to financially support the family and also generally get out of the way to make the job easier for his mom. Alas, his mom died a few years later.
  • Distressed Dude: Frequently, due to a seriously lacking sense of self-preservation and a desperate need to keep his companions out of trouble. It’s usually Severin who rushes in to save him.
  • Beware The Quiet Ones: Soft-spoken (unless shouting orders), calm, un-expressive, patient Absalom Hayes. Also the complete opposite of a doormat, a very capable leader and fighter and also far more intelligent than people tend to assume. Don’t mess with him.
  • Beware The Nice Ones: It takes a lot to push him too far, but he's perfectly capable of kicking butt.
  • The Captain: Used to be a navy captain, now he's an airship captain, albeit a civilian one.
Relationships

Long-time friend and love of Absalom's life. They become a couple at some point.

Absalom saved his life once; Val is utterly fascinated by him.

Technically, he's her captain. They don't particularly like each other, but are generally quite civil.
