Ever imagine if your OCs/stories having fandoms?

(Not sure if this belongs in Creator's Corner or Character Discussion, but I assume here since it's mostly to discuss from creators' perspective or so. Feel free to correct me if I posted in the wrong category.)

This discussion is mostly inspired from this tweet:

(Feel free to look at the tweet's replies for ideas too)

I admit that I kinda thought of this a lot prior to this tweet or thread for funsies and such. That said, as in the title--do you ever just randomly imagine if your OCs or story having a fandom/fanbase...as in, actual fandoms you've know in any social media, etc? Regardless if it's a small or large one?

If yes, then who do you think will be the most popular character or ships? What kind of fanarts/fanfics or merchandises can you imagine? Running fandom jokes or memes? Any possible discourses? (Note: this is mostly for fun and jokes so please keep this thread civil even if we're mentioning this) Who's gonna be the Komaeda or Sans of your OCs?

Again, this thread is mostly for fun so feel free to share some interesting thoughts or your "imaginary" situations in this as long as it remains civil and not break the site's rules (do censor any sensitive contents and such). I'd love to hear them, lol.

(If your stories happen to already have a fandom--do tell your experiences too, or share anything like say, you imagine if they were as big as mainstream fandoms, etc)

Edit: Expanding to the topic of creators' perspective--will you do any actions if things like this occurs (e.g. providing more contents for popular OCs, clearing any possible misunderstandings in fanbase?) or keep a blind eye on it? Feel free to share that as well!

i think it would be interesting but also terrifying

can u imagine having tons of discourse or drama over ur characters tho

personality wise i think my most popular oc would be phobos, since he is kinda like a disney villain and ppl love those, also hes kinda like bill cypher or discord from my little pony

there could be interesting discourse over thanatos, like some ppl might accuse him of being boring, some might see him as too mean while others might go "fluffy dragon boi uwu"

also myers briggs related, i can see ppl mistyping thanatos (INTJ) as INFJ (bc hes melodramatic) or INTP (bc hes so lazy)

Angry-Moth-Noises

I think about it all the time. The awesome fan art, cosplays, ships, the AUs and inspirations people might get from one of my stories. Seeing who relates to what character, who is the fandom favorite, ect.... Sounds so great!

Then I think about the ship wars, fetish porn, people call others problematic for what they ship or character they like, and then people disrespecting my creation and OCs with the 'death to the author mentality' people have when coming up with headcanons, what villain get woobified............... People trying to kin with my OCs. And then I die little inside.

I don't know who would be fandom fav because most my characters on here are not linked together story wise.

But most my stories are very adult and dark so if anything I feel I would just get a bunch of haters LOL. But I would be the creator who is constantly putting things to the death of canon. I don't mind different interpretation, but I do want people to know what is canon and wont ever happen and what I don't want people doing with my characters. And most likely try to answer questions about lore when people ask (because if I could I would all ways wan to pick the creator's brain on lore info). Depending on how my fandom would be, they could all be very respectful people and it would be a small fandom and it could be great!

aaawhyme

pretty sure that if my novels ever got published and people actually read them, there would be discourse on tumblr about how every ship is 'unhealthy', and anyone who likes the book is a freak, punishable by death :D and with that, they'd probably turn the torches toward me and lynch me for making the content in the first place.

Though with that being said, I have a feeling people who like Hannibal, Killing Stalking, Kuroshitsuji, and content like that, would enjoy the story maybe! so I feel like there'd be a following of that sort of fandom, if my stories were to ever get recognized. At least I'd have those people on my side hahahaha //shot

Almondlover

man i think about this TOO much. most in relation to my favorite oc universe, alien babysitters.

me and my friend joke a lot about socks being the one character that despite being so non human and also murderous, is the one that everyone gives those generic 'sexy' humanization and ship him with gregory (my friends character, protag of the story). its unlikely but its funny to think about.

jim has voted most likely to be reduced to a 'mood' character, where he is seen as the pinnacle of reliability and turned into a meme

x-dee is most likely to be reduced to a joke. i mean. his name.

snap is most likely to be woobified, since she's very socially awkward and anxious.

tidbit is reduced to 'lemonade lesbian' and people fail to acknowledge her actual personality

I wouldn't mind if my story got a fandom. I always wanted it tbh. Though, I'm finally calming down about it; I doubt it will happen. I wouldn't mind any of the side effects like drama, ships, rule 34, etc. tho. It's normal. Whatever would happen, let it happen.

Trowa

I like to think about my stories with my friend having a fandom and being called every terrible thing under the sun because i'm clearly a bad person for having this character do this, or this thing happen here. I enjoy thinking about the gross ships and forced ships and how much people might hate a canon ship vs how much people like the canon ship.

But in small doses i like those kinds of things? I like seeing peoples personal headcanons and AU's and even all the weird shit people might like. I would never dive into my own works fandom, cause I can't stand to be in fandoms to begin with (even if it is my own) but i would like to see where people's imaginations will go if let loose in some of my stories/worlds.

Memesogic

Holy shit yes, especiall what happened this year 6 months ago. My teacher told us we can write a story ( any story ) and I decided to use my characters with a shitty murder plot that nothing happens. I know its quite bad, so I asked my friends to read it and they loved it ( somehow ). I asked them who’s the murderer, who’s their favourite character and they answered them with pride. And heck, there are some memes.

Sadly, i didn’t finish it as I hated it.

Koi_Algadez

Ignoring the fact that every fandom has a "bad side", it has been my dream for a while now... Despite the fact that I have a problem with postin' my stuff in the first place.

I'll get to it eventually \(= ° A ° =)/ but I really want my characters and stories here to stay after I am gone.

Guardy

The question's come up talking to some writer friends before, which is why this is so detailed; I don't generally run around spinning futile daydreams of potential future success. Also, these assumptions were made before the whole tumblr thing happened, so this whole post operates in a tumblr-fandom-framework.

That said:

DOAMS

Gus would probably be the most popular character, given how he's, well, my most popular character. I could see Elliot as another fandom favorite, mostly because he's so very compatible with fannish interests: Openly gay, fond of casual sex but also deeply values deep emotional connections and takes romance very seriously, a veritable fountain of pop culture references and memes, plenty of opportunity for meta things, looks a bit like he could be a particularly adorable young indie musician but is actually old as balls, which lends itself well to a variety of settings; he's also chipper and upbeat (for the lighthearted romance crowd) but has also seen some bullshit by necessity (for the angst/ and/or hurt/comfort crowd). It'd be interesting to see what ships would become fandom favorites, since the obvious pick of Gus/Jaime suffers from incompatible sexual orientations (but then again, they may just ship it (queer)platonically), as does just about every other ship involving Gus. I could see some variation on Gus/Elliot be popular, though.

There'd probably be a LOT of hurt/comfort stuff, things featuring Gus working through things, case fics, Elliot's exploits in general, and probably ALL the AUs.

Fandom drama would probably arise around a few things:
A) people shipping aroace Gus with likely just about everybody, and endless discussion whether this invalidates his sexuality (A/N: highly depends on how the ships are shipped)
B) Is It Okay For A 4000-ish-Year-Old Vampire To Sleep With Guys In Their 20's If Said Vampire Looks The Same Age: The Never-ending Fandom Wank
C) Is Elliot a sweet cinnamon roll that can do no wrong, a flawed but redeemable person, or just flat-out scum: The Sequel To The Never-Ending Fandom Wank
D) Just... vampires. In general.
E) The inevitable complaints about at least one non-cishet character dying in a story, despite that story not having any cishet characters
F) HOPEFULLY some discussion about Jaime, her unreliable narrator status, and the fact that she's actually kinda terrifying

Equinox

Despite DOAMS generally being my more popular project (because Gus exists), I've gotten some pretty exceptional reactions to Equinox every time I actually got to show off some writing. Which probably means that my character profiles and descriptions for that project suck, but oh well.

I'm actually not sure about the most popular character, because the interplay of two of them is so central to the story - if I'd have to guess (which I do), I'd say Severin, just because he's more upbeat and approachable than Absalom. Then you'd get the Sissy Leonhardt Fanclub (who doesn't even have a profile on here yet, shame on me), some folks rooting for Doc Maur, and some people probably enjoying Valquite a bit, because he's a cute and lovable asshole. The main star of the show would definitely be the budding romance of Absalom and Severin - and therefore also the most common OTP. Then you'd also have Val/Lionelas the second canon ship. I can see people shipping Absalom/Doc Maur for the foe yay, other people shipping Val/Absalom (and instantly getting their asses kicked for it for the age gap and Absalom definitely seeing himself as more of a parental figure in canon - though the ensuing discussions about power imbalances would be fun, because Val's technically speaking the one with a scary amount of power over Absalom), and probably plenty of minor characters getting it on.

Fic-wise, there'd be ALL the AUs, probably, because I can say from experience that Equinox lends itself VERY well to those. Then plenty of hurt/comfort again, plenty of smut, and probably a whole lot of just... assorted romance things.

Fandom Drama:
A) How much of a jackass is Val really, and is it problematic to like him
B) The aforementioned shipping issues
C) Is Absalom actually a kind and sweet cinnamon roll or secretly ~sinister~ after all
D) People shipping the Equinox with Absalom, and somebody getting mad about it because they're not used to good ol' crackships anymore

LuckAtlas

I've talked about this with a number of friends before, and the initial mood is always met with so much excitement, only to dwindle down into horrible dread - mostly due to the "bad sides" of fandoms. For me personally, I'd be thrilled to see people making fanart, and just celebrating something I created in general - that all sounds like a dream to me. There's also always the side of me that wonders what would happen if this happened - if a fan went back and found all my old (current rn) dumb oc art that I kept posting.

But when it comes down to it, there's so much discourse in fandoms. There's a lot of problematic ships that I could easily see being a thing when I look over my characters, there's even some not so great canon relationships that could be seen as perfectly okay and protected by a fandom. I fear for my precious thot boy, and how much a fandom would tear him up. There's also a character of mine that has a really complicated attitude and past towards gender and identity - and I just dread the day any discourse starts over that. Honestly, any discourse whether it be identity, politics, or relationships is just something I just don't want to deal with.

On a brighter note: things I'd be excited for!

  • Popular and unpopular opinions within a fandom
  • Seeing which characters would be underrated/overrated
  • As noted before: fan art, but also fanfiction, and fan au's
  • Okay, maybe I am a little curious about the possible ships out there. I pray for nonproblematic ships
Architeuthid

Oh, yannow, I've already experienced someone aggressively shipping Arond and Banor (one of whom is aromantic) despite the fact that their relationship is platonic for a reason...but shippers gonna ship, regardless of my say-so. Unless I like, cry or something. And then I'll get accused of queerbaiting despite the abundance of gay and bi characters throughout the story, because people are like that. Yay. (Banor also is probably that character everyone is convinced can do no wrong and draws flower crowns on. They're not entirely inaccurate.)

Some group is probably going to ship Leonard and Drake (Lake? I'm kidding) and get yelled at because although they're also both aro, their relationship is highly abusive. Instead, they'll extol the wonders of Drake/Enrique. Draque? (Nevermind that both  of them have incompatible orientations) Leonard gets lots of callout posts. Also, so far everyone seems to be very into Vesta, and I dunno if that would change with scale. I guess it's that cult leader magnetism.

I try not to think about the inevitable...things. At least they're all adults?

'kin drama' oh god it'd be a disaster

cozylittleartblog

honestly i used to really like the idea of having my own fandoms, but the longer i spend in fandoms, the more i get worried xD on one hand (disregarding the fact that content creators aren't supposed to look at fan content and stuff for Legal Reasons lol) i'd love to see how people interpret things, and what weird and fun AU's they'd come up with, the theories, fanart, fanfic, headcanons, all of it - i'd drown myself in the passion of it all. and fan songs?? oh man, some of my stories could spawn some AMAZING music. on the other hand, i'm not much for romance myself, so i wouldn't really enjoy the shipping aspect of the fandom (aside from the few canon ships), and if people start ignoring sexualities for their ships... = u = ship my lesbians with men or my aro-aces with Anybody or anything like that and i'm gonna roll my eyes so hard they'll fall outta my head. i'd be publicly denouncing people that age up my minors to draw lewds of them, and people would call me ~ * ~ problematic ~ * ~ or some shit because i wouldn't want people kinning my characters. every time i work on Hollywood's Finest i have nightmares that people are going to ship Clara with the antagonist, her creepy, vengeful former co-star. i see people romanticizing the way he tries to kill James (the new lead and her actual love interest), and trying to take Clara as his own like she's something to win, and it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. it sounds fun to explore that kind of Bad Ending, it's something i want to explore myself once i've got the regular canon written out enough, but there's a difference between exploring bad endings & writing angst, and acting like it's a good, cool, healthy thing :')

... so i guess there'd be some low-tier drama and tomfuckery, but nothing too bad xD i spend too much time worrying about hypotheticals. i think the goods would outweigh the bad, but i REALLY wouldn't enjoy the bad parts and i wouldn't be able to keep my mouth shut about some of it.

as for merch... ohhh boy, merch. pins. buttons. plushies. figures?? i'd go apeshit for figures of my characters... enamel pins would be the first thing i'd invest in though, outside of easy-to-manufacture stuff like t-shirts. i'm a pin fiend. i've already decided the first piece of unique merch for my webcomic, when it gets to the decent-merch-demand point, is going to be enamel pins xD i'd love to see stuff like custom clothes, too - i can see something like Dakota's jacket being a popular item. (it was based on a real, similar jacket, which i hunted down IRL and now have for myself >83 i get complimented on it all the time,,) if the stories weren't indie and could afford to do so, i'd also support fan merch! there'd be set numbers people are allowed to make of the stuff and it can't compete with official merch, but i'd love to see stuff like that and you KNOW i'd be buying a bunch of it for myself asdlfkjsdlkjfs. i'd have ita bags dedicated to my stories filled with merch and art other people have made of them ; w ;

this got way longer than i thought it would, i am Incapable of Not Blabbing

salida

This is something I thought about occasionally since i was planning (and working on) a webcomic with some of my ocs. and the idea kinda horrifies me, because a lot of people in fandom tend to come up with headcanons or project stuff onto characters and although i'm guilty of that and its perfectly fine to do, i'd definitely be annoyed if people didnt portray or understand my characters properly D: or if they interpreted things completely wrong... but its also funny to imaging the fights people would have over which of them is the best character or which is #Problematic and anyone who likes them is a shitty person... blah blah blah.... Kinda glad I gave up on the webcomic thing though, the characters are way too personal for me :P Stuff like fanart would be great, i'd be getting oc art for completely free :) and merch would be interesting too.. but i think its for the best that my ocs dont have a huge audience LOL.

i get the feeling my girls (or specifically junko) would be the most popular, but the most popular pairing would be between my guys cuz from what ive noticed over the years on the internet, people tend to refer mlm pairings. ximena would be VERY controversial and she'd probably be the center of a ton of discourse
