Profile

Curtis Morello has been spotted variously breaking and entering into buildings and sneaking into bars.  While he gives the impression of a punk out to cause some mischief, he also has a soft spot for dweeby interests like Pokemon.  Curtis' street smarts make him an appealing potential ally, but as it turns out, he's actually in the possession of Black Hole Sun, a powerful Stand the party's been pursuing this entire time.  In previous encounters from years ago, Black Hole Sun would abduct victims at long range, who then wind up erased from the general public's memory!

Known Backstory:

Unfortunately, Curtis is indeed the user of Black Hole Sun.  According to one of the player's abilities, Curtis felt "hollow" inside, but it's different than the "hollow"-ness of Nemo's "fake people," such as what was felt with Andrea.  It seems he's more "hollow" in the emotional sense, as the characters would very much come to know.  He's completely sociopathic, and can only be moved by pleas if they involve convincing him to do something exciting.  By which he means something illegal, of course.

Despite his appearance, Curtis is almost 20.  Five years ago, he was in juvenile hall.  This caused a widely-publicized scandal, as it turns out he was the illegitimate son of the incumbent mayor of the city.  Notably, this information was erased in the current timeline, pointing to a possibility that Curtis joined the Terror in order to cover it up somehow.  Whatever the case, his dad seems apologetic toward him, but Curtis seems more content on just messing with him.  These details could certainly explain why he acts so immaturely for his age.

Specifically, Curtis is the one that urged Anthony Managuchi to begin running for mayor, apparently out of the simple joy of seeing his dad squirm when faced with a worthy political opponent.  As the head of the Terror/Delta Machine, Anthony also keeps Curtis close as a bodyguard, punishing and abducting victims on Anthony's behalf.  He also acts as a scout to find Stand users to recruit through battles with Black Hole Sun; if they put up a fight, he offers them an invitation.  While it seems his and Anthony's relationship is mutually beneficial, Curtis appears to have no respect for him, and often schemes behind his back.  It's not known if Anthony is simply unaware of this, or if he considers Curtis' pure power more useful than his attitude.

In-Game Timeline (Act 1):

The first time he was spotted, Curtis was entering an apartment complex believed to have some sort of relation to the Terror, giving the impression of a smug teenager that was breaking in for funsies.  It's been further clarified that he's a legal adult and actually lives there, but the jury's still out on what specifically he was doing in that moment.  He could have been breaking into someone else's apartment, of course.  In fact, living there means he has easy 24/7 access to perform such a feat.

His signature was on a note found in Hansen Orzabal's pocket after the latter's death.  How the two of them are related, no one knew, but the note appeared to be a warning about Anthony Managuchi and "cameras under the lampposts."  Hansen seems to have believed it, and the party worked to verify its contents.  After some investigation, the "cameras" turned out to be absolutely real (and pointed to Gabriele Colin to boot), and even Anthony's appeared more suspicious with time--Gabriele and Florence both answered to him as their "boss."

Curtis later broke into Mr. Managuchi's own house while the family was away, so however insidious Anthony apparently is, Curtis doesn't seem to fear him at all.  It's become increasingly apparent that Curtis knows things the players don't, and has his fingers in some sort of pie (or ten), but he continues to be terribly hard to track down.

In-Game Timeline (Act 2):

A mysterious Stand called「Endless Fantasy」overwrote the memories of parts of the city and characters' relationships while simultaneously skipping time forward a couple months.  The players and NPCs were victims alike, and eventually regained varying degrees of knowledge of what had been reset.  After putting their heads back together, the party resolved to interrogate Curtis.  He's clearly wrapped up in the city's mysteries, but unrelated to the extremely suspicious Managuchis--maybe they can convince him to give them information?

While the crew has managed to track Curtis' apartment down, they're having a difficult time reasoning with him, as he seems far more interested in using his Stand ability to cause chaos, and not interested at all in holding any sort of meaningful conversation.  They've been able to glean a few backstory details from him (outlined in the appropriate section above), but most urgently, he dropped quite the bomb: Anna is Endless Fantasy?!  He left the scene right after, leaving the players to ruminate on that alone.  If he IS working for Anthony (and Delta Machine, which is the Terror's business name, so to speak), why does he seem to want to mess with him and his family so badly?  Evidence from the past, like his note to Hansen telling him to attack Anthony, does not paint a very loyal picture of him.

He has since reappeared at the casino, interfering with the party's mission to rescue Daniel and Laurent.  While the couple was secured and Curtis decisively dealt with, his answers still remain frustrating.  He claims that Anthony is the boss of the Terror/Delta Machine, and also that he's the one responsible for the murdering, not him.  Florence also corroborates this, so it seems like Curtis is telling the truth.  Curtis says the he brings the victims to Anthony, for Anthony to finish them off in private with his own Stand, but isn't divulging any information about the Stand itself.  The party is nervous to proceed based on this information alone, but Curtis doesn't seem worried.  Despite the danger he apparently poses, he claims Anthony is gullible, and will easily be tricked if the party simply pretends to take them up on their offer and "join" Delta Machine, only to betray Anthony after.  But considering what happened to Hansen, is that really the best idea?

Currently, the party has him captured, but is unsure of what to do with him.  He needs to be properly punished for what he's done, but the party, being decent people, is averse to torture or murder.  He only seems to listen to adrenaline and illicit activities, not threats or emotional appeals...maybe they can figure out a way to bribe him to get him off their back for good.

Ability:Black Hole Sun

Long-Distance, Natural Humanoid

Black Hole Sun is a Stand that primarily manipulates gravity in a localized area.  For simple attacks, it can change the direction of gravity with its swipes and punches, effective at both lightly pulling people around or slamming them against walls and ceilings.  It seems to be able to control the strength of this manipulation, and the effect wears off over time if not actively maintained.  If acting defensively, it can also use these abilities on itself as a means of expediting an escape.  However, being long-ranged and floaty, it does not prefer direct combat.

For Curtis' preferred, sneakier approach, BHS can create invisible "gravity wells" anchored to a specific wall, object, etc. that act as traps to an unsuspecting target.  Curtis activates these at will.  Once activated, the target is sucked in immediately, barely giving them time to react.  The target becomes "spaghettified" like the event horizon of an actual black hole. As soon as the gravity becomes unbearable, the victim finds themself suddenly teleported to another location. This ability works best in enclosed areas like rooms, and cannot be used effectively in open areas without "anchor points," like the sky.

It is cloaked in purple and black with bright aqua highlights, and a mask.  It's pretty muscular.

Other:

  • He was created to be a foil to a player character that also has boundless curiosity.
  • His ridiculous jacket was inspired by the 90s comic book trends of Rob Liefeld; namely the "pouches" variety.
  • His goggles and color scheme were partially inspired by the album cover for Ken Ishii's "Jelly Tones."  With some color adjustment, he also looks very 90s-era Nickelodeon.
  • The players knew Curtis' appearance before they knew his name, so for a while he was dubbed "Pockets Boy."  Later they found out he was much older than they figured...so he's more like a Pockets Man?
  • He has a chipped tooth.  He forgets how he got it.  Does it really matter?
  • He has the scruffy goblin vibes of my older OCs Sam and Nocturne, but they're not similar enough that I'd make Curtis linked to them through tabs.
  • Because his identity as the Stand user of Black Hole Sun had to be disguised to keep the mystery for players, he was named after Kurt Cobain and Tom Morello; contemporaries of Soundgarden/Chris Cornell instead of a direct reference.
  • With his Stand ability known to the players in their various backstories, he was originally figured to be the main antagonist.  Turns out he's the main antagonist's chief bodyguard.
  • His Stand was designed by Bee.
