As the heir of a prominent businessman, Gene's father made sure his son would have the social skills necessary to negotiate. He can be very charming when he wants to be. He also has a tendency to be flirty and make witty remarks. In addition he takes great pride in his appearance and goes to great lengths to appear presentable at all times.
Being privy to the majority of negative emotions that emanate from those around him has caused Gene to become a more understanding person. He's sensitive to the feelings of others and will often do what he can to alleviate such feelings as they arise without drawing too much attention.
Once Gene has set his sights on a goal he will fight tooth and nail to get there. He hates to lose, even if it is to a goal he set himself.
Growing up Gene constantly needed to prove his worth to his father. Competitions of any sort were a simple way to achieve this. Besting his peers was often met with parental approval, further reinforcing his competitive streak.
Gene has a hunger for knowledge and new experiences. He charges into the unknown head first, consequences be damned. He struggles with not having all the answers and does his best to fill this gap however he can. He can be rather nosey when it comes to personal matters as well, but he's learning to control such impulses.
In his past life Gene had walked the fine line of the picturesque businessman's son. Being freed from that life of lies and facades along with being reborn as a ghost that thrives on emotions has resulted in Gene struggling to manage his own feelings. Now all emotions are very intense for him, for better or for worse. He is no stranger to crying.
Gene self worth has taken a major hit since dying. While he had previously been very sure of his worth due to his wealth, social status, and business prowess he now is unsure what he has to offer. He struggles particularly with matters surrounding money and providing for others. Because of this he often deeply impacted by the criticisms of others.
Gene struggles with acknowledging to any faults of shortcomings of his own. If he is ever wrong he rarely admits to it. He's a sore loser and gets emotional when bested by others. He gets defensive when others correct him and point out his shortcomings or mistakes.
Driven as he is by his goals Gene will throw himself into work at an obsessive degree. Work is also his primary coping mechanism when dealing with insecurity because it functions as a distraction and also improves his own feelings of self worth. He's likely to easily lose days and nights to work and often needs to be physically pulled away from it.
Powers
Gene has a strong sense of spatial awareness thanks to his ability. He can detect the movement of objects near him if they are within a certain range and meet certain criteria.
Can passively sense items that:

- are at least 1ft in any direction
- are moving
- are within 30th
- are at least 1 inch in all directions
- Clothing, especially from thin fabrics
- accessories like hats or large jewelry are easier
- Tiny objects: paperclips, needles, etc

- The contents of a sealed item; can sense a box but not what is in the box.
Gene uses Telekinesis very often to move items around. It comes second nature to him and he will often float objects over to him as if it were an extension of his own hands.
In gijinka form he has the following limitations:
- He can lift up to 12 items at once.
- He can lift a total of 80 lbs at once.
- He can take hold of objects within 30 feet.
- He has fed recently
- He is looking at the object(s)
- His hand is outstretched toward the object(s)
When Gene inflicts this status condition on a target he produces magical ghost needles that impale his own body like that of a voodoo doll. He himself in unaffected, though the sight is unsettling.
Gene alternates between the following TMs:
- Thunderwave
- Toxic
- Will-O-Wisp
When Gene uses Floral Healing rose petals will burst from the splits in his stitching and surround the target.
In gijinka form he is limited to two uses a day and will often avoid using it in case of emergencies.
Gene's only attacking move.
Due to the increased speed Gene receives while mega evolved he will prioritize subduing his opponent with a status condition and Telekinesis before attacking.
However he will avoid mega evolution entirely if a Dark type is present as the risks of mega evolution are less likely to outweigh the benefits.

Mega evolution feeds on Gene's deepest insecurities about being thrown away by his family, resulting in him becoming suspicious and even hostile towards his teammates. Thanks to Colburn's notes on mega evolution he has been learning to resist the effects but he still has a long way to go.
Gene is capable of seeing in the dark.
Gene gains energy from strong negative emotions and is drawn to people with them, particularly to feelings of anxiety and self-loathing, much to his own disgust. Gene is capable of either feeding passively by slowly drawing in the emotions of those around him, or actively feeding by looking into the eyes of the target and drawing out their energy. He will occasionally perform such acts in order to rid the target of such negative feelings, but generally avoids feeding off of people he knows. In order to maintain his ghost powers he will seek out public places that generally cause anxiety like doctor's waiting rooms, passively feed for an hour or two, and then leave.
Gene for the most part is able to sustain himself on regular food, but he becomes more weak and irritable if he has not consumed emotions in some time. Feeding in this way also makes his ghost abilities more powerful.
Gene is capable of levitating while experiencing strong positive emotions, though he has great difficulty controlling it.
As a Shuppet Gene used to phase through objects more easily whenever he was calm, but since evolving and his own emotions became heightened this happens far less often. It takes a great deal of concentrating for him to attempt phasing and mishaps are likely.

A one of a kind violin. It is not of the highest quality, but it is still quite nice and particularly ostentatious.
A promise ring gifted by his boyfriend Ari. A fragment of the Dusk Stone that he used to evolve is set in the center of the ring. "I'd spend the next hundred lifetimes beside you" is inscribed inside the band.
The mark of a Shadewood, a hair tie lined with beads of bone from Tobias himself. Protective runes are etched into the beads.
A torn an tattered journal with yellowing pages detailing Colburn's experiences with Banette mega evolutions. The following note was left inside:

Past
Gene was born a Budew, the second child of wealthy Roserade parents Walter and Margaret Whitlock. From an early age his parents attempted to groom their children into the ideal heirs to their business. Gene felt he often fell short of his older brother, and his younger sister was his parents' pride and joy. As a result Gene became more mischievous, acting out in order to get more attention and lower the standards placed on him.
Despite his behavior he learned the tricks of their trade quickly. He learned to bow when greeting elders, to shake hands firmly when discussing business, and to keep his hair neat and tidy in the presence of others. He also learned how to lie convincingly, how to hide his faults and flaws, and how to keep and trade secrets.
Gene's first steps in life were on to a circus tightrope, strung high in high society with a great fall waiting beneath him. Fortunately he was quite the social acrobat, or so he thought.
In his teenage years Gene began taking on some of his father's work. He was charged with difficult tasks; hire new factory workers willing to start at half pay, find new suppliers that will sell to them at a loss, etc, etc.
Gene understood the position he was put in, that such expectations were unreasonable, impossible for most. But Gene was determined to live up to his father's standards. In an effort to meet his needs he turned to Sanlow on the Ash Islands. There he found children, orphaned and desperate for work. He also found black market dealers, smugglers looking to pawn off their goods quickly and willing to take a cut in exchange for a deal.
Gene's father was proud that he had come through with flying colors. For years Gene continued to do business in Sanlow, despite the risks and rumors. He was no longer merely walking his tightrope, he was doing backflips with confidence. With carelessness.
Kidnapping
Major Character Death
Gene's success made him cocky. He had not taken precautions to hide his identity when visiting Sanlow. In fact he often did the opposite, using his family's power as leverage to get a good deal. He took pride in the frustration he would cause, his opponent realizing cutting deals with a well-to-do family like his could have some unfortunate consequences.
Gene was not entirely ignorant however. He made sure to always have bodyguards accompany him on his visits. On a routine deal Gene hired a few hands and took a ship to the Ash Islands as always. But he discovered upon arriving that his guards were not as trustworthy as he assumed. He was ambushed, knocked out, and held hostage in exchange for a large ransom.
The night of the exchange is hazy for Gene. Likely some of his kidnappers were keeping him confused during the process. Blurry shapes representing the smugglers and his father and brother shifted to and fro. He heard their voices, but not what they were saying. He felt skittish, ashamed, afraid for his family. In a moment of panic he attempted to break free and run. He heard yelling, felt something hit him hard, and he fell to the ground.
Death Mention
When he woke up he was sitting atop a small grave marker, a garland of long wilted roses that had been left on the stone now draped around his shoulders. The stone was rather cheap in his opinion, and the cemetery was not well kept. After some investigating he discovered he was still on the Ash Islands, for reasons he could not explain.
Why was he brought back? He'd heard some wives' tails of people being stuck in this world due to unfinished business. Was there something he had left to do? Was the universe telling him he needed to get revenge on the thugs that had kidnapped him? Personally he wasn't much interested in running into them again.
While contemplating his options Gene encountered a young woman in a local tavern. The woman herself was rather unremarkable--dirty, underfed, tattered clothes--but she exuded some kind of vibrant energy that drew him in. It was so thick he could practically taste it. Was being a ghost like this for everyone?
He approached her, eager to be near her energy. They chatted over drinks and he learned she was soon leaving town to start her own team as part of the GCFS. Gene's previous plans were now lying six feet under and he was in need of some soul searching of his own, so he used his charm to convince her to let him come along. Maybe traveling the world would help him find the answers he needed.
