Key Relations

tempest.png

Tempest :: Partner & Captain

tempest.png

Early in their dynamic, Tempest makes Callisto flustered and a little stressed—she's hot, clearly into her, and a murderous pirate woman who could easily kill her or leave her to die. But she's also weirdly nice to her and keeps flirting??

Further into their dynamic, Callisto respects Tempest and admires her self assured attitude. Over time she learns how much of Tempest's image that intimidated her before and earns her the fear and respect she commands is entirely self constructed and intentional, and the intimidation is replaced with amusement and fondness. Sample of their interactions.

When they formally get together, as first mate and captain, that aforementioned amusement is projected outwards much to Tempest's ire, as Callisto is completely fearless of Tempest and is prone to casual intimacy in front of the crew—leaning against her, holding onto her, etc. This has the consequence of making the crew infinitely more intimidated by Callisto than they are Tempest, because if Tempest is scary... Then what's Callisto capable of?

Aquila :: Antagonistic

aquila.png

Aquila was Tempest's old first mate two years ago, and she is Not happy about the current situation. She is bitter, antagonistic, and spiteful towards Callisto, who in turn is unwilling to just take this attitude and bites back, although she is understanding of where it is coming from. In Callisto's eyes, her feelings are understandable, but her actions are not. Sample of their interactions.

Rosalie Thorne :: Reassuring Mentor

rosalie.png

Although Callisto does not herself remember it, Rosalie rescued her, her sister, and her mother when she was just a baby, and accompanied them back to the village she called home. Visits from Rosalie as she grew older were few and far between, but they corresponded frequently by letter and Callisto grew up assured by her mother that if ever she was in trouble, she should seek out Rosalie for assistance.

As such, to Callisto, Rosalie represents safety and security. She trusts her wholeheartedly.

Design Notes

Callisto's distinctive traits are her long face, prominent nose, and big ears! They're what give her face character, so when adapting her to your style consider how you can stylise these features to maintain her likeness :)

Minerva, the dragonling, is her familiar. Callisto doesn't know the spell at the start of the story, but she soon learns a common spell that allows her to transform Minerva into a "witchmark", a tattoo-like mark somewhere on her body where Minerva sleeps peacefully until summoned. A witchmark should be exposed to the air so the familiar can enter and exit tattoo form, so around her neck and her arm are the usual places that the mark sits.

About halfway through the story, Callisto receives an injury that leaves her face scarred. A little after this, she and Tempest formally get together, so one can assume that if drawing her with the scars she and Tempest are already in a committed relationship.

Characterisation

VOICE :: Softspoken & Light

Callisto has a stammer, and struggles in particular with "I" and "W" sounds, but if she's particularly stressed she might also stumble over "O/U" as well. This will cause her to repeat a word or sound briefly as she tries to get the whole sentence out ("I don't—I don't know about that," "W-What?" "I-I... I can't," for example). As such, she doesn't like talking very much and is a pretty quiet individual, but if she's comfortable and relaxed she's both more likely to talk and less likely to stutter.

If she's talking very excitedly she's likely to—she might—it's possible that she'll over self-correct, but she won't notice that she's doing it. In most circumstances, her stammer is pretty mild, and only happens if she's made to talk unexpectedly. Try not to overdo it to the point of caricature, but if she's nervous and hasn't been talking much and tries to say a problem sound, she might stammer it.

Callisto is also very bright, but she grew up in an isolated farming village. She's intelligent in a very quick on the uptake, pieces things together fast, capable way—but she's had no schooling outside of her mother teaching her how to read, write, and count. She's smart, but not book-smart, so her manner of speaking is more down to earth than your academic types.

PERSONALITY :: Polite & Kindhearted

At the start of her arc, Callisto is not very sure of herself. She lacks self confidence, and didn't expect to be still alive now. But, she has a kind heart, and wants to do right by others. However, despite all of this it would be a misnomer to ever call her "meek" or similar. She may have a nervous disposition, and she might be kind, but she is not mentally sound and she is a dangerous person to anger. She's a very capable killer, and in her current state she has a tenuous grasp on her ability to care about her own wellbeing.

As her story progresses, she finds more direction in her life and begins to care very much about continuing to live, and to begin doing things on her own terms. With newfound purpose, she becomes much more confident and no less dangerous, especially as she gains a thrill for danger. But her heart always remains kind.

She's overall just a very sweet person. But watch out!
