Fandom/Kins Rules Update Feedback Box

Posted 5 years, 1 month ago (Edited 5 years, 1 month ago) by admin
This will be left up for a few days so everyone can have a chance to get their thoughts in.

I'm currently reviewing a change in our fandom character ruleset in light of feedback regarding fandom characters. This was supposed to be a reply to the following thread, but I thought it'd be better to split it off into an official thread for better visibility: https://toyhou.se/~forums/14.suggestions-bugs/95652.-rules-edit-kin-characters-albums

To clarify, our current rules do not disallow upload of fan-characters as long as the canon permits derivative content, the characters are correctly credited, and all fanart is being used with permission. The reason being that up until now I haven't minded this platform being used for fandom RP.

I'm up for changing the site rules if fandom characters are a nuisance, but just wanted to verify since there seems to be some confusion: do people want both canon characters and derivative characters banned, or just canon characters? Where these are defined as the following:

  • Canon characters:
    • EG: Re-uploading Naruto with no changes made to his design or history (usually includes GIFs and screenshots from the anime or copy pasted paragraphs from the character's wiki page)
  • Derivative characters:
    • Any characters derivative from canon content - this includes:
      • Explicit redesigns (eg. Naruto as a dog or furry)
      • Characters that're described as an OC or sona but resemble the canon character in both personality and appearance or cosplay them 24/7
      • Personalised playable MCs (eg. customised Kamui/Robin, Frisk, Gudako/Gudao)
      • Personalised pet site/game characters (eg. FlightRising dragons, Neopet/Subeta/ChickenSmoothie pets)
      • Characters belonging to a canon species (eg. pokemon OCs, LOZ OCs)
      • Characters belonging to a canon setting (eg. BNHA/Hogwarts OCs that use the school uniform taken from canon designs)
    • This is quite a wide range, so if you have specific thoughts on what you find unacceptable or acceptable for a derivative character that'd also help with gauging the community's opinion for the new ruleset.
I won't be making this a poll; please do post if you have feedback even if you just want to add a +1 to banning one or both of the options.

For people who would prefer not to post in thread but would still like some input, I've popped up a Google form where you can drop off your feedback: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeaQVmEpF1r8vAqEoHomYa7u_2cMcpoXWKBfhVDjpPWaNQwJg/viewform

"i wanted to buy him before i even knew he was inspired, thats how easily some of these characters can pass"

well tbh anything can pass if the person doesnt know the source material
like how i managed to get a league of legends character as a goat design one time, and didnt even know it was a 'inspired by' design, until someone other than the seller or 'inspired by' designer let me know
i was trying to sell the design when someone let me know. i could have been in deep shit if someone had accused me of theft because thats how on the nose the design was.

sorry for the ramble i just wanted to get that out there, that absolutely anything can pass if the source material isnt known by the person interested.

I'm really against banning Derivative characters because while I agree and hate kins, there's still a thing such as fictives. Like yeah sure I have dA and Tumblr to keep up with my system but TH was literally made to help you sort, keep up with, organize, and up galleries.

It's not like I freaking chose to develop DID - I at least want an easy way to keep up with everyone and also let them express themselves on their pages.

P.S All fictives in my system are under "Authorized users only" while the rest/their fursonas are Public.
(And before anyone comes at me telling me you can't have fictive alters, both me and another diagnosed friend of mine have fictives. We have two different therapists.)

...isn't fictive literally a type of kin?

i cant fill out the form bc it makes u sign into gmail

but looking at the form i do have my mind changed on some parts:

canon character reuploads? dont want

canon character aus? dont want

canon inspired characters(i changed my mind on this one a bit)? depends on how similar they are

i think it should be changed enough that it is not the same character as what it was originally inspired by

so it should be like how jk rowling based snape on one of her teachers but obviously he isnt identical to that teacher

or be like freedom planet where its obviously inspired by sonic but different enough to be its own thing

in cases like freedom planet and snape, the character could be considered an OC instead of an FC

dog that is kind of like naruto is not an oc but an allowable derivative character (discussed below)

tl;dr it should be more of a tribute than a copy

i will make an example of a naruto dog that is not allowed and one that is allowed

not ok:

-looks like naruto as a dog

-basically is naruto as a dog with some minor differences

-has mostly things in common with naruto

ok:

-ninja dog, does NOT look like naruto as a dog, some minor design similarities are ok

-has similar temperament to naruto and thats it

-mostly does NOT have things in common with naruto

tldr 2: naruto as a dog is not ok, dog that is kind of like naruto is ok

canon mc derivative? i have criteria for what i think is ok

-should be able to customize the character's physical appearance

-there should be more than one of that MC's species/role in the world (ex pokemon trainers, elder scrolls mc, dark souls undead)

-need to customize more than the characters wardrobe but some exceptions where the character is NOT a franchise mascot are fine (ex pokemon trainer is ok, animal crossing mc are ok, splatoon player character is ok, monster hunter is ok, link from botw is not ok)

-there are some cases where the character does not have to be called an FC, it can be declared an oc, if u made it in something where u can make anything u can imagine (spore) or where u change public domain creatures (sims, impossible creatures, customizing a generic dinosaur in battle of giants); if u do choose to make this an oc, u should probably not use only the game images for the character

belonging to canon species? ok

canon universe, non-canon character u created? ok
