Fandom/Kins Rules Update Feedback Box

Posted 5 years, 1 month ago (Edited 5 years, 1 month ago) by admin
This will be left up for a few days so everyone can have a chance to get their thoughts in.

I'm currently reviewing a change in our fandom character ruleset in light of feedback regarding fandom characters. This was supposed to be a reply to the following thread, but I thought it'd be better to split it off into an official thread for better visibility: https://toyhou.se/~forums/14.suggestions-bugs/95652.-rules-edit-kin-characters-albums

To clarify, our current rules do not disallow upload of fan-characters as long as the canon permits derivative content, the characters are correctly credited, and all fanart is being used with permission. The reason being that up until now I haven't minded this platform being used for fandom RP.

I'm up for changing the site rules if fandom characters are a nuisance, but just wanted to verify since there seems to be some confusion: do people want both canon characters and derivative characters banned, or just canon characters? Where these are defined as the following:

  • Canon characters:
    • EG: Re-uploading Naruto with no changes made to his design or history (usually includes GIFs and screenshots from the anime or copy pasted paragraphs from the character's wiki page)
  • Derivative characters:
    • Any characters derivative from canon content - this includes:
      • Explicit redesigns (eg. Naruto as a dog or furry)
      • Characters that're described as an OC or sona but resemble the canon character in both personality and appearance or cosplay them 24/7
      • Personalised playable MCs (eg. customised Kamui/Robin, Frisk, Gudako/Gudao)
      • Personalised pet site/game characters (eg. FlightRising dragons, Neopet/Subeta/ChickenSmoothie pets)
      • Characters belonging to a canon species (eg. pokemon OCs, LOZ OCs)
      • Characters belonging to a canon setting (eg. BNHA/Hogwarts OCs that use the school uniform taken from canon designs)
    • This is quite a wide range, so if you have specific thoughts on what you find unacceptable or acceptable for a derivative character that'd also help with gauging the community's opinion for the new ruleset.
I won't be making this a poll; please do post if you have feedback even if you just want to add a +1 to banning one or both of the options.

For people who would prefer not to post in thread but would still like some input, I've popped up a Google form where you can drop off your feedback: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeaQVmEpF1r8vAqEoHomYa7u_2cMcpoXWKBfhVDjpPWaNQwJg/viewform

Canon Characters +1

Derivative Character -1

I can understand banning canon characters, since those are legit characters, but banning Derivative characters seems extremely harsh. If the fandom allows it, people should be allowed to have all the dog Dekus they want. I really don't understand why it's upsetting so many people, considering it's not harming anyone at all. People sat down and put effort into translating an anime/or whatnot character into let's say a dog. I think it's completely fine to take inspiration from things. I myself am not that confident in drawing humans, so making a fan character is a great alternative. With the proper credits and stuff I really think it should be fine.
If the creator of the canon character is alright with it, there really isn't that much of a problem, other than random people who like that character complaining about the fan character because they think they can gatekeep what happens to that character.

  • EG: Re-uploading Naruto with no changes made to his design or history (usually includes GIFs and screenshots from the anime or copy pasted paragraphs from the character's wiki page)
    • BIG DISALLOW this is straight up plagiarism
  • Explicit redesigns (eg. Naruto as a dog or furry)
    • allow on a case by case basis I think people making dogs/furries based on canon characters is alright and would be considered parody and fair use! though if the character is TOO resemblant of the character in question [i.e. the markings look EXACTLY the same as the clothing from whatever character or there's no species change, the latter would be considered fanart and this site isn't a fanart site] when i make designs inspired by canon characters i take extra care to be sure that the design is not too similar and by a simple name change my fan characters can easily become completely disconnected from their original inspiration.
  • Characters that're described as an OC or sona but resemble the canon character in both personality and appearance or cosplay them 24/7
    • case by case with the same reasoning as above as this point is basically redundant of that.
  • Personalised playable MCs (eg. customised Kamui/Robin, Frisk, Gudako/Gudao)
    • i wont comment on this.
  • Personalised pet site/game characters (eg. FlightRising dragons, Neopet/Subeta/ChickenSmoothie pets)
    • disallow. though you can create characters and stories out of these sites many of them state in their tos that you cannot use the designs created with the traits off site or as OCs in anything not related. these are basically those doll maker designs.
  • Characters belonging to a canon species (eg. pokemon OCs, LOZ OCs)
    • ALLOW. i see no reason in banning fan characters as long as they arent carbon copies of canon characters of that species [ie, a pikachu that's literally just a pikachu with nothing or very little changed/ added to the design. or a pony that looks exactly like rainbow dash but recolored]
  • Characters belonging to a canon setting (eg. BNHA/Hogwarts OCs that use the school uniform taken from canon designs)
    • ALLOW. basically the same reasoning as above and same exceptions too [ie no recolored traces of canon characters or blatant copies of canon characters] the only part that can get a little gray is the school uniform type stuff. i would say as long as it's not their ONLY or MAIN outfit this should be allowed.

+1 to banning fan/kin characters that make no improvements/changes to the show

+1 to banning explicit redesigns stuff like giving naruto a tail and calling him yours

+1 to MC's/pets, most of the time they all look the same

+1 to characters belonging to canon species where no changes are made

i think if a design looks noticably different from the original then it should be allowed, if it is just a rip off/copy then it should not

    • Disallow

  • Explicit redesigns (eg. Naruto as a dog or furry)
  • Characters that're described as an OC or sona but resemble the canon character in both personality and appearance or cosplay them 24/7
    • Seems fair to leave alone. I would count that as a parody so long as there is credit. Lot's I've seen are based visually off of favorite characters but differ from the canon characters they're based on in quite a few ways. Maybe case by case if they seem to be exact copies of canon characters.

  • Personalised playable MCs (eg. customised Kamui/Robin, Frisk, Gudako/Gudao)

I think straight up canon characters should be banned, but derivative ones shouldn't be.

Banning feels a bit too harsh for derivative characters? Especially when (i'm assuming) some of them are mostly meant as just jape characters for personal use and as fun jokes between pals. I definitely think derivative characters should NOT be sold. But i don't think someone should get banned for having one as long as its not just straight up Deku, no changes made at all, not even trying to give him a different form.

I think derivative characters that are ex: Deku as a Dog, or an elf or w/e should maybe at most be force set to unlisted/private? So that other people who do not wish to see those types of characters do not have to, but the owner can continue to catalogue their art and share them privately with pals.

+ 1 Banning Canon / Canon Dogs

I can’t upload Deku as my own character. Making him a dog shouldn’t change that rule.

Ban them. Please.

The argument “it makes them easier to draw!” is proof it’s just fanart. Which isn’t allowed.

Don’t filter them, don’t block them. Ban them. If you have to do that, they shouldn’t be on here in the first place.

And ban people who buy, sell and create them for profit. Creating them is already illegal, gaining money from them is even worse.

Canon characters, characters that are blatantly the same as whoever from a show/movie/etc, definitely okay with you banning those; the person CAN'T own them. I'm just gonna copy-paste the response I made in a dA comments section about this:

Don't ban the derivatives ;;;;

I have... well, I still hesitate to call him an OC (but I've since made him into his own character with no real relation to the source material I took him from despite him being the same OC) - anyway, I have a character that I took from a canon source and had to build him from basically the ground up because he only made a short appearance in the work he was featured in and he didn't even have any lines or reactions to anything, he just... existed for a few seconds. I made him my own. The only thing I don't own is his appearance and the universe he's in.

But if people are really just... straight up uploading Naruto to the site...... why?

DEFINITELY allow fandom characters though; those are legit ;;
