Strange character inspirations/origins?

Posted 5 years, 2 months ago by jammyrolling

I haven't seen a thread like this around in a while and i can't find one oops So here we are! Have you got any strange character origins?

For example, when I first created the Bridgeport series, a lot of characters were actually originally either animals or mushrooms. Now they are most definitely not animals or mushrooms lmao
So who else has strange character origins? The stranger the better!

Watson (Sherlock) Swissy

It was a simple concept of "Oh hey, maybe Watson should have a pet named Sherlock to reference Sherlock Holmes" And then, m'friend got the idea of "What if it has a british accent and acts like sherlock holmes?"

So here it is

Arrow Finches

3 years ago I fell in love with this painted ball jointed doll head my friend had and she owed me some cash And I absolutely needed it xD so we traded and called it even.

I had this head sitting on my computer desk since then debating characters and design ideas. Almost sold him a few times. Then was inspired to actually get him a body and hands and hair and such. And bought a ton of stuff for him. So I fugred I'd have his ref made and actually build a character for him.

So glad I didn't sell this guy... He's one of my favorites to date.

rabies pride,,,,,, i scrapped the actual rabies pride flag on his arm (you can see it on that first image in his gallery, that was the og concept) but he still has it on his tail also i joked that traded his tooth with a raccoon for rabies aka got in a fight and had it knocked out (and got rabies) so now his actual backstory for the scar and the tooth is he got in a bar fight with an anthropomorphic raccoon

Baphomas Tyrennia Ryallin

I wanted to make a character that was like a PS1 Squaresoft jrpg protagonist, wrestled a goat, and somehow ended up with Baphomas

Freako Licorictus

Donkey Kong 64 inspired this rusty flamethrower croc bot.

Listen.  All the enemies are crocodiles and Frantic Factory has the best music ever.  Mad Jack is an excellent boss with a wonderful goofy design.  I just... started from "a crazy crocodile living in an abandoned factory" and one thing led to another and somehow I ended up with this existential crisis of a character

JANICE. Almondlover

Really didnt feel like doing 20 pages of humans for my art assignment, so the teacher recommended, "animals with human attributes", to which the table all yelled about furries, until one friend said I should do a human with animal attributes, a reverse furry, if you will. So, I drew our lovely lumpy friend, Janice!

Grieve aaawhyme

so this isn't a story about a character origin creation, but more of an 'update' to the character that already existed for a few years.

i was in japan a while back and i can't speak much japanese. i was looking for the correct train to board, because im directionally challenged - so i went up to one of the train people, and he must have been sick that day because he was wearing a mask over his mouth and had these really intense and cool eyes...

anyway, i went to ask for directions, but i guess he didnt want to talk and yet still he knew what i was looking for. he held up 3 fingers and pointed in the direction i needed to go, without saying a word.

something about that one silent encounter inspired me so much to dive back into Grieve's story, and change him up quite a bit. i actually started writing about Grieve while i was riding on that very train. I'm going back to japan in a few weeks and i hope i get that kind of spontaneous, out of the blue inspiration again! it was awesome.

Xiaofan of Cangxi Cliodna

Xiaofan herself had quite a normal originstory, her pet owlcat (whom I consider as much of an OC as her) however...

Kirin was born from a wordplay. Back then I still mostly roleplayed in Estonian and the estonian word for the "eurasian eagle owl" is "kassikakk" - "the cat-owl". Thus Kirin was basically "What if Xiao has a "cat-owl" but it's an actual cat and owl hybrid?".

Tha_Pig

I don't know if this is "strange" enough. I made my characters as a response to a story I hated.

When I was a kid we had this conformity-encouraging story at school called "The discontent pig". It was about a pig who lived working the land. One day the pig got bored of working with dirt and decided to find a new profession. The story continues with the pig trying up different jobs, all of which end up in painful disasters. Eventually, the pig realizes his error and returns to working the fields.

I hated that story because I felt the message was "you should not try new things" and "you should not try to improve yourself". When the pig tried different jobs, he always ended having painful accidents. But these accidents had nothing to do with him being a non-conformist. They happened because he tried to do jobs he had no training or experience on. (Example: he would try beekeeping and he would be stung by the bees)

The actual moral of the story should be "don't try dangerous shit if you don't know what are you doing". The pig in the story could have succeeded in the new jobs if he had done some homework before jumping into them.

So I decided to make my own story where a pig would find a new awesome job and be the best at it. And what better job than astronaut?

And that's how I started making comics about a pig in space.

party popper htespagheti

hey i like completely 4got abt this bastard rofl anyway party was based off some cool nail polish i got lawlz

Sakura Rainbow000Pegasus

I was filling up my water bottle one day and I thought to myself, "I should make a pink kitsune."
Here we are now.

Pancake lophiusdragon

i love the sea pancake meme so much i made an oc of it

JJTheNeko

I have an OC im really needing to make an official bio for, so i cant actually link them yet. But basically his name is Frost Boy, and he got his powers  from a medical condition where at times his body felt like he was in a sub zero environment. You may think his inspiration was Dr. Freeze, but nope. The first thought when making him was Killer Croc.
