Ask a question to the user above you!

Posted 5 years, 11 months ago (Edited 5 months, 16 days ago) by hedgemaze

We have lots of threads to ask questions to or about characters, but what about the users? In the vein of the Say something to the TH user above you! thread and the I want to see a TH user who... thread (and serving basically as a non-anonymous CuriousCat), this is a thread to help you get to know your fellow TH users better by asking the person above you a question. In return, the person below you will pose a question to you. After you're asked a question, edit your post with your answer!

If you're uncomfortable or don't want to answer the question you were given for any reason, just say so and leave a fun fact about yourself so the game still serves its purpose. If a question is truly problematic, message me with any concerns.

Rules:

  • Don't ask questions that are very personal or could be uncomfortable, and bear in mind that many TH users are minors, so while I encourage you to look at the profile of the user above you and ask about something mentioned if you like (like their pets, their hobbies, or their current project), please don't ask very personal questions like exactly where someone lives.
  • Try to ask something fun or interesting, but it's fine if you don't know the person above you at all-- getting to know each other better is the point of this thread! It's fine to ask something general like what their hobbies are, who their favorite fictional character is, how they came up with their username, which of their own characters is their favorite, or how they found ToyHouse.
  • Of course, it's great if you ask something more specific, too! If you know they have a lot of fandom characters, you might ask how they got into that fandom, or if they have a unique art style, you might ask how they developed it!
  • There's another thread for specific questions about characters, and another for worlds, but you can ask general/broader questions about a person's creations here, like how long they've been working on their story, or what inspires or influences them. I'm not going to keep writing examples, but you get the idea. Just use common sense and try to get to know your fellow TH users better!
  • You can ask multiple questions in your comment if you want to, but only one is fine, too. This can be as in-depth or as casual as you like.
  • Please ping the person above you so you make sure that they see your question! If you're not sure how to do this, you simply type @THEIRUSERNAME, and they will be notified! This will not work if you edit the ping into your comment later (like if you wanted to claim and then edit your question in); you must put it in when you first submit the comment.
  • You are NOT ALLOWED to skip anyone in this thread. If you cannot see the post above you because the poster or you have blocked each other, wait for another person to comment before replying to the thread. Feel free to bump the thread to encourage others to participate!
  • Wait at least a couple of posts before going again.
  • Edit your original comment with your answer to keep this clear; please DO NOT add new comments to the thread just to answer someone's question. This gets confusing. Take it to private messages if you want to have an ongoing conversation.
  • You can bump the thread as often as you like; I don't mind.
  • Be nice and have fun!   Please don't be rude if someone asks you a question you've already answered before! If that happens, you may link your previous response if you don't want to go over it again, but I recommend adding something new to say about the topic, if you can!
  • Want to play the game in reverse? Answer a question from the user above!

The first person can either ask me something or just claim a spot!

Edit: my answer

"Hedgemaze Expo" is the name of the main characters' band in my comic! I've been using either HedgemazeExpo or Hedgemaze as a username ever since, which is to say since 2003! Most people just call me Hej for short now.

The name itself doesn't mean much of anything, other than that I liked both words and liked the sort of paradoxical nature of an exposition dedicated to huge structures that can't be moved (what do they exhibit, photos? bush samples? tiny mazes?). In terms of the comic, it's just supposed to be a unique, kind of awkward, and silly band name, because in-story, it's an inside joke between my characters Jill and Amber.

All my forum games and threads

what/who inspired you to make one of your ocs Ashari? Were they inspired by a canon character? They kind of remind me of someone from wings of fire not sure who tho hedgemaze actually my sister got me into the show! she drew some fanart of the characters craig and tweek. and i asked "who's that?" she said they were from a show called south park and said the show fits my type of humor and i should watch it. so i did! ive been stuck in the fandom ever since. the thing id like best about the show is the characters. most of them are well written and its very nice. i hoped that answered your question! uwu

hedgemaze

@southendray Might be an obvious question, but how did you get into South Park? What do you like best about the show?

Thanks for the question! Hedgemaze Expo is the name of the main characters' band in my comic, so I've been using either the full name or Hedgemaze as my username for 15 years now :')

It doesn't mean much of anything, but I guess I do like both hedgemazes and expos.

muwi

hedgemaze where did your username come from?

omg that’s cute

@Judas-la-Carotte I have always loved religion! I myself am agnostic, but I went to a Catholic primary school and we did a lot of religious education and that's honestly where it all started for me. I only saw the Bible as something similar to a novel or a story book and I liked it for what it said, but not what it wanted me to practice. I like theology in general, it has really interesting 'mythos' and the stories are fascinating. Especially Asian religion. Half my family believes in folk religion (as all old generation Asians do, haha) and the things my grandma used to tell me spurred the same reaction I had towards the Bible and things like that.

Though I have no ill-thoughts against religion, my story explores religion as a whole in both a negative and positive way. Basically you can separate all my characters into two or three groups. The blindly religious who let it rule their life and ultimately lead to their downfall, those who abuse religion and get screwed over, and those who aren't religious but see that it is capable of connecting and bringing people together.

For example, the main trio in my story has the following: my main female is heavily religious and grew up in a religious environment, but said environment has become corrupted because they let themselves believe that the very fact that they are religious puts them above the 'non-religious', but she sees no wrong in that because she's been indoctrinated. My main male comes from an outside environment, he isn't religious but isn't anti-religious because he sees that this entire belief was able to create a peaceful country. My villain is a character who felt betrayed by his religion and its policies, and so re-interpreted it for his own gain, though he thought he was doing good.

I wanted to explore how religion is both good and bad, but I think ultimately I ended up portraying religion in a negative way.

My username comes from my theology research, haha. It's the Korean way of saying 'wu wei', which is a Taoist concept. It means 'non-action', which summarised really badly, just means to let yourself go with the flow, and to behave in a complete natural and uncontrolled way.

My own interpretation of wu wei is just to not give a shit, really. It's a big part of my own personal philosophy, so the name just stuck with me after I went out and did some soul-searching.

One of the first things I noticed when coming across you in the forums is that some of your characters are religion-inspired, which I find really super-duper cool! Especially considering the warning on your profile, which aspects of it do you usually like to explore through your characters, and why?

Unrelated, but where do your username come from? It's simple but really cute haha

Thanks for the question! Tbh I don't keep a consistent schedule? Like... at all lmao? I just update it when I have the time and I feel like it! I consider it pretty niche so I don't have many followers, it's very stress-free and I didn't run into major problems yet! I can have a super consistent schedule when I have enough free time, inspiration and motivation but otherwise my updates are very slow

The only "problem" I have is that, since I started working on this comic several years ago, my art style and skills have evolved quite a lot so pretty much all of the old pages make me cringe lmao... I would like to rewamp everything but it would take forever and the show must go on haha

To make it short, it's the first time a "big" story project of mine has gotten this far. It's far from being perfect but it's mostly practice for me! I've learned many things thanks to it and it's very satisfying to see how much I've evolved even if I don't update often

petzcatz2

@Judas-la-Carotte i see that youve been working on an ongoing webcomic for several years! whats that like and have you run into any problems or roadblocks along the way? is it easy or hard for you to keep a consistent update schedule?

i just think its fun to draw like that! bright colors make me happy and im interested in learning more about color theory through... trial and error mostly! cartoony art allows me to experiment with art in fun ways and see what works and what doesnt.

ironically though, i dont watch any cartoons lately. not for any particular reason, theres just none airing that really interest me. the last cartoon that i really got into was wander over yonder and i still love the art direction and animation in that show.

Raddishes I've always wandered where did your name came from because hey, that's pretty rad. Is it from rad + radish or is it from radd + dishes? Where did it came from and how long have you used it? Or maybe you like to use the word rad in your names? :0

Aside from the useless question, your artwork especially your icon gif is adorable! How long does it take to draw your artwork? And what program do you use?

What's it gonna be? What's it gonna be?? 👀👀

Im also skeptical on what would it be since most of these characters are originally standalone ocs for me to draw daily ahahaha. I'm a bit too lazy to make a webcomic. But im also fairly new to writting. I havent yet set a theme on what the story will be oops (though, my friend suggest me to make a webcomic and making her as the co-writer lol) For now, ill try to think a story as well as developing the characters and plot.

fizzelston

What's your plain with the "Wait, Find Accept" series you got going there? Are you going to make it into a novel or in a webcomic series  👀!?

-

Oh frick my first or was a dude who can shift into a wolf and back into a human cause we all we ALL had a dragon/dolphin/wolf phase (i had clearly a wolf phase)

His family, ofc, didn't like this his mom was a special wolf shifter his dad just 'uwuwuw I hate you' for no reason (listen the second thing I loved beside wolfs was angsty drama(tbh I still do)

And he had this 'i don't belong in both world' angst and IDK it was edgy af

muwi

fizzelston Tell me about your first OC, ever. Even if the first one was a complete mary sue/gary stu!

(If you can't remember, just one of the earliest OCs you can recall is okay too!)

books, LOL. been making characters and writing stories since I was 10, sort of like imaginary friends, they were super cringe of course. I even found my writing recently and I died reading them. Now that I'm older, I'm just rewriting them and rebooting my old, oooolld OCs!

as for drawing... mm, I can't tell you where the interest came from? I went to extracurricular classes after weekend school for drawing but that was more looking at Chinese waterwash paintings, which I wasn't really a fan of doing myself. I guess it just evolved into my current interest in it after watching anime/reading manga.

Knottia

muwi I’m always curious about this, but who or what got you into drawing and/or collecting/making characters?!

zinnia

boring question i know but.... what's your favorite animal, and why?

i think it was originally the music and also seeing the characters a lot ! i really really like the music and just like ... the amount of characters just chillin .. also i love to torture myself playing games that are hard

my fave characters are sakuya, remilia, and meiling , my fave song is probably pure furies and my fave game is imperishable !

So what made you want to make "Gates of Heaven"?

Edit: Well I was going to say "chemistry", but you did say "aside from things related" so... well honestly there's not many very specific things I like, there's just too much to choose from. As for my first OC... I really don't know who they were, I didn't really have OCs until a few years ago, and if I did then I don't remember them, so the best I can do is show you the first element I designed which was this guy.

Caine

Since you seem to be very interested in science, do you have a specific area of interest and/or expertise (aside from periodic elements and things related)? Also, what was your first OC like, and do you still use them?

What are your thoughts on today's manga? Or Shonen and seinen manga if you dont read newer mangas lol.

I don't think I'm really equipped with enough information to answer that! Or, like, I don't actually know statistics or much of the new series or anything to form an opinion based on facts really. All I can really say is that a lot of modern manga doesn't interest me solely because they deal with themes/topics I'm either not a fan of or alternatively can't relate to at all. There are some, of course, but in general the current mainstream series are something that simply don't resonate with me, and I usually have to find my series from underground magazines.

Likewise when it comes to shounen and seinen I don't think I know much about them as genres (although really, they're not "genres" in a way western people tend to understand them) to really have an enlightened opinion about them. All I know is I do love me some good gore and beating up bad guys, and Devilman, Vinland Saga and Berserk are some of my all-time-favourite manga! Which tends to come across as a surprise to people who don't know me very well and who associate me only with shoujo, which I actually consume only in 70s shoujo dosages (I'm so gay I usually find it kind of hard to get invested in most girl-meets-boy shoujo).

On a topic of manga, what's your favourite manga and it's genre (As in what genre do you like)?

My favourite manga is Shounen Note by Yuhki Kamatani, and it seems it was published in a seinen magazine! It's a manga about a middle school choir, boy sopranos, and a small port town where even a smaller group of adults and children alike come together to fight for their citizen rights. As a whole though it tells about Yutaka, a 12-year-old boy soprano with a sensitive to sounds that affect his life in all aspects. He joins his new middle school's choir in order to complete in the national choir contest, and during this time he also happens to meet Vladimir Popov, a Russian, world-renowned boy soprano who also has a special kind of sensitivity to sounds. Like all Kamatani manga, it deals a lot with the themes of identity, gender (it has two non-cis characters!) and even vaguely touches on the side of sexuality and same-sex attraction, although more as a subtext I'd say.

For "genres" I generally like I really enjoy 70s shoujo LAUGHS and also BL from that era, although back then it was published under shoujo! The term BL came only later

Mind telling me who's your favourite character from your favourite manga?

My favourite is the boy soprano Vladimir, although I honestly love Yutaka as much but for different reasons! I didn't expect it given the way he looks really, but seeing him in action and talking about his feelings, fears and aspirations I could actually really see my child self in him. When I was his age (and younger) I also used to have a very strong bond with my grandma, I had a somewhat violent temper and I'd fight people physically a lot (although usually not in school), and I felt like I have to work hard in order to prove myself. I still relate to him in some ways, although mostly in qualities that really come as a double-edged sword: we're both ambitious to a boot and extremely critical of ourselves, which on one hand tend to result in great success, but on the other hand at the expense of our mental and physical health.

But really he's a well written character who really comes across as a preteen: he has a lot of childish ways of behaving, he doesn't always think what he does, he can be cruel exactly in the ways children typically are, and he says a lot of things even he might not necessarily fully understand. But Kamatani also perfectly manages to show children are also people with feelings and thoughts, and they can say and do a lot of mature things that often surprise us adults. It's often hard to remember we were kids too, and we probably had so much more going on in our child minds than what the adults could perceive. I appreciate realistic portrayal of children that don't paint them as perfect obedient angels or the absolute devils, but as young, still developing human beings.

Choosing songs has always been very hard to me augh. It always changes as time goes so picking an all-time favourite is difficult. Oh well, i'll just tell my current favourites

Venus - Susumu hirasawa
I've always loved Hirasawa's music! And this is my favourite from him. I love the traditional feel it has and the melody is soothing and gentle, like his voice. The guitar is really glorious and the lyrics? The lyrics is beautiful like his other songs. I love the references to venus, the planet itself and the roman god. Like dang man

Honeymoon Un•Deux•Trois
THE LYRICS MAN. And the gentle french-like melody is super sweet. The singer's voice is also soft and gentle. I cant believe my favourites are love songs oh god

Most of my favourite songs are mind based. If the song is beautiful enough (or fits my taste), then my mind will begin to imagine the mood based off the songs. Well, they do relate to innocent and childish things so, there's that too
