Ask a question to the user above you!

Posted 5 years, 11 months ago (Edited 5 months, 15 days ago) by hedgemaze

We have lots of threads to ask questions to or about characters, but what about the users? In the vein of the Say something to the TH user above you! thread and the I want to see a TH user who... thread (and serving basically as a non-anonymous CuriousCat), this is a thread to help you get to know your fellow TH users better by asking the person above you a question. In return, the person below you will pose a question to you. After you're asked a question, edit your post with your answer!

If you're uncomfortable or don't want to answer the question you were given for any reason, just say so and leave a fun fact about yourself so the game still serves its purpose. If a question is truly problematic, message me with any concerns.

Rules:

  • Don't ask questions that are very personal or could be uncomfortable, and bear in mind that many TH users are minors, so while I encourage you to look at the profile of the user above you and ask about something mentioned if you like (like their pets, their hobbies, or their current project), please don't ask very personal questions like exactly where someone lives.
  • Try to ask something fun or interesting, but it's fine if you don't know the person above you at all-- getting to know each other better is the point of this thread! It's fine to ask something general like what their hobbies are, who their favorite fictional character is, how they came up with their username, which of their own characters is their favorite, or how they found ToyHouse.
  • Of course, it's great if you ask something more specific, too! If you know they have a lot of fandom characters, you might ask how they got into that fandom, or if they have a unique art style, you might ask how they developed it!
  • There's another thread for specific questions about characters, and another for worlds, but you can ask general/broader questions about a person's creations here, like how long they've been working on their story, or what inspires or influences them. I'm not going to keep writing examples, but you get the idea. Just use common sense and try to get to know your fellow TH users better!
  • You can ask multiple questions in your comment if you want to, but only one is fine, too. This can be as in-depth or as casual as you like.
  • Please ping the person above you so you make sure that they see your question! If you're not sure how to do this, you simply type @THEIRUSERNAME, and they will be notified! This will not work if you edit the ping into your comment later (like if you wanted to claim and then edit your question in); you must put it in when you first submit the comment.
  • You are NOT ALLOWED to skip anyone in this thread. If you cannot see the post above you because the poster or you have blocked each other, wait for another person to comment before replying to the thread. Feel free to bump the thread to encourage others to participate!
  • Wait at least a couple of posts before going again.
  • Edit your original comment with your answer to keep this clear; please DO NOT add new comments to the thread just to answer someone's question. This gets confusing. Take it to private messages if you want to have an ongoing conversation.
  • You can bump the thread as often as you like; I don't mind.
  • Be nice and have fun!   Please don't be rude if someone asks you a question you've already answered before! If that happens, you may link your previous response if you don't want to go over it again, but I recommend adding something new to say about the topic, if you can!
  • Want to play the game in reverse? Answer a question from the user above!

The first person can either ask me something or just claim a spot!

Edit: my answer

"Hedgemaze Expo" is the name of the main characters' band in my comic! I've been using either HedgemazeExpo or Hedgemaze as a username ever since, which is to say since 2003! Most people just call me Hej for short now.

The name itself doesn't mean much of anything, other than that I liked both words and liked the sort of paradoxical nature of an exposition dedicated to huge structures that can't be moved (what do they exhibit, photos? bush samples? tiny mazes?). In terms of the comic, it's just supposed to be a unique, kind of awkward, and silly band name, because in-story, it's an inside joke between my characters Jill and Amber.

You have a few worlds, which one is your favourite and why? I also see you're a game dev!!!! Did you go to school for it or is this a self taught thing? :o What have you made so far, what do you want to make in the future?

also I SEE YOU LIKE DRAMA CDS and low key same (I kinda just got into them this year)!! Which ones are your favourite, and which voice actors do you like?

AlleycatIrony thank u for questions ;v;

so what is it that draws u to a particular design? like do u pick based on colours, outfit style, ect or is it a kinda 'the adopt chooses u' situation where u immediately feel connected?

Most of my characters already exist in text form, so I just browse and if I happen across a design that fits my mind's eye of them then I will buy it. That's the case for a few OCs such as Zaleos and Leraikha. Ones that aren't like that; say, Ronove and Haagenti, didn't already have an appearance in my head. But yeah, it's sort of a 'the adopt chooses you' and I felt like it would suit them well. OCs I commissioned are exactly as I envisioned them. I take into account colors, but less on the outfit. Leraikha isn't supposed to be in western clothing, but it doesn't particularly bother me. I plan to one day redesign them all in terms of clothes and some minor things here and there.

what are some of ur favourite myths/stories? why are they ur favourites?

I don't have any stories that are my 'favourite' per se, but I like really funny ones. The most memorable one for me is the story of how Ame-no-Uzume dances over a washtub to get Amaterasu to come out a cave, because Susasnoo was a dick and made her angry.

I also really like stories like how Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China, went crazy eating mercury pills and went to the ocean to shoot 'giant fish' because he believed he was a sea god(?). And the time he sent a court sorcerer named Xu Fu to find 'the elixir of life'. Xu Fu, knowing that there was no possible way he could possibly find it and that he couldn't come back alive emptyhanded, requested that the emperor give him 1000 women and men aboard. Xu Fu then sailed off and never returned, with the legend ending that he is one of the first colonists of Japan.

Novel wise I like the classics like Dream of the Red Chamber. I think Chinese stories are so stupidly hilarious because its overdramaticized as all hell, because they're all about saying the message 'life is transient' and things like that - so people will die for the dumbest reasons that wouldn't happen if they just thought about it before they acted.

what historical period or event interests u the most seeing as u say ur interested in history?

I really like games/media set in the Edo period or Sengoku period, so I've come to be interested in these two the most. To be honest same I am super bad at retaining numbers and specially battle-related details, but just... the general romanticization/dramaticization of some of these characters is amaze.

I used to have a Shinsengumi phase and I think to this day I am still relatively interested in them. I remember once I found an article that had details on several members as described by Nagakura Shinpachi (one of the only surviving Shinsengumi members) and it was funny reading what they were actually like compared to how they are portrayed in popular media. Of course, Japanese media really bishie-fies these dudes. Like for example I have seriously get to encountere a 'Saito Hajime' that isn't good-looking, but when you read Shinpachi's real life description of him he is, and I quote, 'has a face like a fish'. Ouch.

Not quite as interested because I don't like politics, but I like the aesthetic of the Meiji-early Taisho era too.

AlleycatIrony

muwi it seems that a lot of ur OCs are adopts! so what is it that draws u to a particular design? like do u pick based on colours, outfit style, ect or is it a kinda 'the adopt chooses u' situation where u immediately feel connected? also ur profile says ur into mythology so what are some of ur favourite myths/stories? why are they ur favourites? also bc asking questions is fun - what historical period or event interests u the most seeing as u say ur interested in history? i also love history but i'm unfortunately not good at retaining information regarding most historical stuff ;w; so it's cool to hear what other ppl have to say abt historical things they like!

fave pokemon
that's definitely 100% joltik! it's been my fave way back since pokepark 2 came out on the wii and there were those three tiny joltiks in the warehouse that followed u around and got rides on other pokemons' backs ;w; i thought they were the cutest things and not long after that i saw the battle between joltik and beartic and i fell in love all over again bc it's just so small
honestly if pokemon were real i'd have a joltik riding around on my shoulder 24/7

there's a lot of other pokemon i really love! but joltik defs takes #1, but i also have a real soft spot for pokemon like empoleon, staraptor, and crobat - and also alolan persian bc it was the first shiny i ever found (terrible luck when u think abt it, been playing all the games since diamond and i find my first shiny like 10 years later in moon)!
tho my fave legendary is heatran and my fave starter is popplio! (tho i do love bulbasaur and chikorita too)

type gym
if i had to have a type themed gym i'd be a bug-type gym leader! obviously joltik would be my star (tho probably my weakest considering), but i'd also have an ariados and a dustox! i'd be one of those kinda weak 'early on in the game' gym leaders w/ only three on the team, but not too weak unless u got like... a fire type

fave OC
that'd be a tie between krypt'n and ash! kryp's very personal to me and he's... weirdly special? funny considering i hated him so much when i first made him that i forgot he existed for like... two years lol
and i just really love how ash's design turned out and he's one of the most fun to draw out of my characters :D
i also love elian a lot, he's definitely up there w/ the other two - i can't really narrow down a fave to just one character haha

most developed OC
i try to develop my OCs as much as possible (even if a lot don't have profiles they've got HEAPS of development behind the scenes) so that they're more 3D instead of 2D, but the ones that have had the most development would be krypt'n again (simply bc of how in depth and complex his character is) and rahart (linking troll AU profile bc his human AU one is lacking info atm)! rahart especially has come a LONG way since i made him back in 2013, and he's gone from one extreme to the other and his personality and the like was never stable for years and i could never decide whether he was actually shy or if he was a kinda volatile, edgy shithead - so kelion/jaehyuk (once again, linking troll AU) came about around 2016 and rahart became an alter as a part of a small DID system , and that was the hardest decision for me to make in terms of OCs because rahart was very special but i also couldn't see him being anything more than a personality in the end if that makes sense? kelion/jaehyuk got the personality rahart had when i first made him (airheaded, quiet, shy, easily startled, lack of humour ect) while rahart continued to develop much past that 'edgy emo violent' phase his character had
now he's one of my most complex characters and one of the ones that means the most to me! i'd put him in the 'favourites' but the other three kinda push him out of the way bc i draw them WAY more

Since you mentioned you like Pokemon on your profile, what is your favourite Pokemon? If you were a gym leader what type gym would you have?

Also which one of your OCs is your favourite? Which one would you say is the most developed?

I was making a dA account years back and I was trying to think up a cool username for it. I quickly came up with a list made by putting words together and wound up choosing TenMomentsTill. I'm honestly really glad past me picked a username that I still really like.

Alexg47

TenMomentsTill So what's the story behind your username, if there is one?

"How do you proceed when creating such characters? Which kind of trivia related to the elements do you usually keep in mind when writing and designing them?" I usually start with basic things like properties, compounds, where it's found and it's applications, and then I use that to help me decide what kind of person that element would be, their gender, nationality, personality, who they're friends with and stuff like that, and sometimes I'm able to come up with more complex things like my Iodine's gluten intolerance which helps them feel more unique.

"Have you ever come across an element that was particularly difficult to personify? Which one and why?" The Lanthanides, they're all really similar to each other so making each one feel unique is difficult.

I find the fact that you personify the periodic table through your OCs pretty fascinating! How do you proceed when creating such characters? Which kind of trivia related to the elements do you usually keep in mind when writing and designing them?

Have you ever come across an element that was particularly difficult to personify? Which one and why?

These are good questions yES thank you for asking I'm always ready to talk about 2hu

who's your fave character?

This may sound weird but... Mai. The one from Mystic Square. She was even my TH icon at some point, haha- But yeah I love her and tbh I kinda hate the fact that there's a new character named Mai in HSiFS because uuuh I know she'll overshadow the oldest one... My second fave is a bit more "classic": it's Youmu! I also really like Sariel, Aya, Marisa, and nearly everyone tbh- Oh and I own some merch of Reimu, Marisa, Youmu and Yuyuko; merch of Mai and Sariel are... quasi inexistant lmaoo

I've done that super long preference test some months ago (in January lmao) if you want to take a look: https://sta.sh/01fnbzlbsop2

which game is your favorite and what's youre favorite song :0?

My fave games are Mystic Square (Mai I love you) and Perfect Cherry Blossom (Youmu I love you)! But tbh I enjoy playing most danmaku games! I couldn't say which song is my fave tho because they're ALL GREAT gtgtrthtgf so let's just say I love Maple Wise (yup, it's still from Mystic Square!)

what do you like most about it?

EVERYTHING LMAO but uuuh I'd say I enjoy the gameplay the most? Idk I know it's difficult and a bit frustrating at times but I really relaxes me somehow? I don't have to think about puzzles or gestion; I just... dodge stuff... And ofc the music plays a bit part in that too! Overtime I grew attached to the characters, lore and universe, but I wouldn't say it's the first thing that attracted me when I started to get into Touhou haha

zinnia

@judas-la-carotte

i know you like touhou but like..... give me the deets...... who's your fave character? which game is your favorite and what's youre favorite song :0? and like...... what do you like most about it? sorry im a big touhou fool and i love hearing other peoples favorites when they say they like it sdfghjkl

my fave game is probably black/white!!!! but close seconds are black/white2 and and oras : D

i love all pokemon honestly???? but my top faves are rayquaza and zoroark, with other big faves bein arcanine, vaporeon, and lopunny atm !

fruiitcake

circlejourney

thanks for the compliments!!! ;v; <3 Lately i've been drawing a lot of art for my OCs but i think i'm pretty split on OC art and fanart?? I find it hard to draw my OCs sometimes so I enjoy drawing fanart more I think. The thing I really do enjoy more about OC art though is that I am creating stuff for myself that isn't connected to anything but me; it just feels more special.

YunaNoire

circlejourney Yo! I'm honestly amazed that you've been working on Revolving Door for so long, that's actually kind of inspirational to me. I have a lot of projects that i've not even started on and i've probably been planning those for just as long. Do you feel as if you have a consistent work flow or do you just do stuff at your own pace? If so, do you have any tips for someone who has trouble with that sort of thing? How long did you work on planning everything out?

Sleepy-Thunder

@Yuna_Animatus
Would you prefer to live somewhere else besides scotland? That's one of my dream places to live and I'm wondering what's it's like for someone who actually lives there. Sorry if this is a boring question!

--------

You're definitley right about me liking Sci-fi and medical themes. I prefer serious toned, realistic characters that are highly based upon science where a lot of things can be explained instead of something being "magic." (though I do have my magical beings as well). And by works you mean stories, tv, etc? I like to watch actual surgeries and such because I find them absolutely facinating and as for anythign else, I'm a big sci-fi watcher and it's probably one of the only things I watch? XD As for my favorites themes, my top would definitley be "medical" (healers/medics/etc) but I also love anything dealing with mechanics, "real bad guy gone good themes" etc.

Lastly, I believe I'm least like Isra, who has an extremely optimistic viewpoint on the world and is an overall blindingly bright ball of pure sunshine whereas I can be likened to the grinch.

Caine

@SleepingThunder I have interacted with your OCs in the past and somehow have learned to associate you very heavily with scifi/medical themes, so I really want to know if you actually like any works that feature those themes (and if yes, what)? What are your favourites themes to use in stories/characters, either when you make your own content or read/watch/play someone else's?

Also, out of all your character, which character would you consider to be the least like you?

I guess my favourite would be The Heart of Thomas! I have read it multiple times and I still like it no matter how often I read it haha. I also think it's a great manga to start from alongside Rose of Versailles if you inda want to get into vintage manga but don't know where to start from.

I LOVE Finnish folklore like there is just something in it that makes it so fascinating for me, and I'm particularly fond of Finnish folk music & certain traditions like midsummer fires. I also really like a lot of Swedish folklore (their midsummer is so much cooler than ours imo) even though I know less about it than I know about my own country's.

TenMomentsTill

Caine

What is your favourite 70's manga? What is your favourite folklore (be it one story itself or an entire culture's folklore)?

PicklePantry

TenMomentsTill

It says you're deciphering years worth of notes over characters. How long have you been making characters? Which ones were the first batch of characters you had, and how many changes have they gone through throughout the years?

Oh thank you! And it's kind of a mixture of both, if that makes sense?
Just about all my characters pop up on their own, but villain-wise there are two big rules I have for them:
- Don't use mental illnesses; I'm always concerned I'll accidentally make a mistake that could be vital. If I use one, then I make it vague and never label it so it can be interpreted by the reader. Nikolai is the only exception to this rule with his PTSD.
- Give them some form of weakness. No matter how strong they are, they have to be weak in at least one field or one way or another. A good kind of checks and balances I use for this is the "How Screwed is Your OC" game. It's pretty interesting seeing how weak my characters can be compared to someone else's character.

Mochagatari

PicklePantry

I've always really liked your villain characters like Smiley, do you have any like...personal do's and don'ts for making villainous characters? Or do they just sorta come up? :>

-------

I won't lie...DecoZONE was inspired, in part, by a Bendy and the Ink Machine AU. XD But mainly, I like to call it a reboot of a very old and very silly gag-a-day comic strip I used to make when I was 14 called Patchwork Detective November York. :> In the end, I really wanted to make a story with art deco and 20s-30s era themes, and I thought November's little detective adventures would be a good fit for it. Granted, DecoZONE is much grittier and serious than the original strip (the original strip was a 4koma comedy thing) but I liked it, and I like working on it.

My current favorite character I've made from it is a tie between November herself and Flora Flowers, from the Toon division. ^_^
