(Not me scrolling through the old forum games and finding this! Time for a fun little revival, I think^^)
It was late enough in the evening that the courtyard that was usually set aside for training would be dark, save for the light of the stars and the moon overhead. Perhaps enough light for anyone spending the extra time outside to train this late to see. At least, that's what Illanya suspects is the case. Someone was using the grounds and pounding on the training dummies in the wee hours of the night, if the scuffed up dummies she's been finding during morning drills were of any indication. It wasn't like late night training wasn't allowed at this particular courtyard either. Illanya was just curious.
The paladin had neglected to bring a lantern to light her way. Not that she particularly minded the darkness, the world around her was fairly clear to her in grayscale. The gold in her eyes glinting on their own, reflecting light that wasn't there. She could hear just fine too, the sounds of repeated hits and impacts ahead reaching her ears and drawing her cautiously closer. Staying to the shadows, the knight would let her footsteps become something a little more silent, though the chainmail and the plates of her armor still jostle together, making noise of their own as she stops at a corner and peeks around it.
The distance makes it difficult for her to clearly see the figure at first, so Illanya steps closer, as quietly as she can so as to not disturb the figure striking at the fake humanoid. Illanya can't help her surprised expression when she not only sees who it is, but that she recognizes that auburn wash of hair, and the flurry of rose petals and vines that accompanies each of her strikes. Illanya can't help the grimace on her face at the memory of the last time she met the thorny warrior. Their last meeting had ended abruptly, and Illanya was sure she must've offended Calluna last she saw her. Perhaps it was a bit of good luck that she encounters her here, a chance to fix her mistake.
Illanya steps forward, grasping a dulled sword for practice off of the rack. With a few quick steps she's near the dummy, careful to not get in the way of Calluna's strikes,
"I had wondered who was spending the midnight hours out here. I'm surprised to have caught the culprit finally." She calls with a sighing laugh, resting the sword on her shoulder. Taking the pause in Calluna's strikes to glance at the dummy, Illanya gives it a kick so it moves a little. "You're certainly doing a number on these guys. Not a bad time to spend working on technique either... Just was surprised someone was out here at all... Typically people prefer to work during the day so they have someone to spar with" The knight says, this time pushing the dummy until it's out of the way, and turning back to Calluna with a more serious look, and she pulls the sword off her shoulder, holding it in both hands.
"I know the last we saw each other, it... didn't go over well. I'm sorry for that, by the way. Perhaps, I can make it up to you? Besides, I think having someone to practice against is better than fighting these dummies over and over." She tries for a smile, nodding to the humanoid sack of straw, before she lowers her gaze again, reminded of her previous failure.
"Of course, that only if you want to. I can leave you be if that's what you'd like."
It was a training exercise, albeit in a much more playful manner than what Illanya herself was used to. Not that she could complain though, it was a fair afternoon, perfect for messing around for a bit.
That aside, she couldn’t exactly train Veritas like a soldier… it truly wasn’t his style of fighting or what keeps his attention. Besides, playing to his strengths was showing that he was making marked improvements. Something that made all this worth it… even if it wasn’t her strength.
Illanya had been trying to push through the bushes, having lost Veritas a little on the way, she hoped that he’d approach from the side of the bushes she’d already waded into, slowing him enough for her to make a quick get away. She gets to the edge of the bush and…
The Paladin staggers back at the impact, the sound of air leaving her lungs as Veritas slams into her, knocking the breath out of her. She coughs and wheezes for a moment, leaning forward as Veritas rolls away, informing her of his short lived victory.
Coughing once more she gives him a single thumbs up, “G-got it… I’ll keep that in mind.” She says breathlessly, before waving him off. “Go ahead and have a head start… I need a second.”
