General Thread for PSAs

Posted 8 years, 20 days ago (Edited 5 years, 6 months ago) by Vespisia

Hello!

8/9: New PSA added.

5/14: 2 new PSAs added.

4/8: New PSA posted and additional information on Squidribs added to relevant PSA.

It was suggested that there should perhaps be a general thread for PSAs which is a fine idea. A place that links to other PSAs and keep things organized.
You can link your threads/PSAs/etc, and I'll add them to the posts. :D
Please Note: I can only accept public PSAs. Anon PSAs are too much of a risk to accept, as they can be open to slander.

Things That Count for PSAs!
-Scams
-Illegally chargebacked (you did a commission, but person claims you never did, for instance)
-Being shifty on doing owed things (taking months on an icon for example, lack of contact or updates, etc)
-Tracing and profiting off of it...
-Etc...

Things That Don't Count!
-Someone has better art than you
-Rude behavior
-Subjective issues
-Dog ate your homework

Obviously, this is just the basic frame work. Each case is different. For instance, someone could go around harassing artists for art and customs, or for people to give up their adopts and whatnot, and that could almost certainly be considered for a PSA...

Of course, it would be great if no more PSAs occur, but in the case they do, I support people posting them because they keep the community safe and will link to them in this general thread. owo/

There'll be two posts, one for PSAs and one for resolved cases! ^^

If they blocked you then yeah it totally okay to take that character off pending and look for different offers.

Hey everyone, I need some opinions/input: I believe I had someone trying to scam me on instagram.

Basically, an account with 2.k+ followers yet only 1 post (1st red flag) DMd me asking if my commissions were open. After figuring out what he wanted drawn, I asked for his PayPal email so I can send over an invoice. (My TOS mentions I only use PayPal.) But he replied "Are you okay with me paying you with Echeck please because of current dispute set on my account using any money app. So I was instructed to pay with Echeck by my bank." (Second flag)

I know there's a lot of check scams, ie they send too much money and have you send the extra back, only for the check to bounce and now you're out of all the money + the extra (or something to that effect.)
So I said no, PayPal only. He tried to push the eCheck a little by explaining it, but I again replied PayPal only. Haven't heard back since.

Other red flags throughout the interaction too though:
- Didn't bother looking at my pricing twice until I told him he needed to for me to give a quote
- Clearly didn't read my TOS either or he'd see I only use PayPal
- Had minor input into what he actually wanted drawn. Basically wanted me to redraw a photo of his daughter's dog.
----- Also upon searching noticed he already got this drawn by another artist 3 weeks ago, which is when he first messaged me.
- Did a search and saw his Twitter account is suspended for some reason ?

All in all, sent weird vibes.

The input I need is basically 2 things:
- Am I correct to assume this is likely an attempt at a scam?
- Regarding that artist I saw who did in fact draw something for him: The artist's description made it sound like they did it for free. If this guy is likely a scammer, should I reach out to this artist? I'm worried that the guy might try to "pay" for the art, or just actually commission a second drawing, resulting in this artist being scammed. Or should I just leave it alone?

Angel-soma that definitely sounds scammy. i would try reaching out to that other artist and maybe ask about their experience working with this person?

Vividattraction I'd have to agree with Hali on this one. Once a transaction has been made and confirmed to have been received, especially with pre-existing designs, the separate files are normally sent almost immediately.

If it is a pre-existing design, I'd expect to wait a day or so after your update message. If no response is given, then I'd just go through with the chargeback process and count it as a loss.

Okay so i’m a active instagram user and i have seen these type of questions a lot in here and no one ever gaved a brief explanation about this subject even tho there’s A LOT of beware and psa posts about those scams. Which also suprised me that there‘s still people who didn’t saw those even tho they were everywhere imo. Or idk, maybe this site actually has very little amount of instagram users.

the questions i mean are mostly these; “someone DM’ed me saying “what would you do with $5000” and i said (blah blah blah)” “someone DM’ed me saying they want to commission me of a photo of their pet/daughter/family member/themselves but wanted to pay with check and insisted”

Here’s the answers for those:

- YES, THOSE ARE SCAM. DO NOT BELIEVE ANY OF THEM. Please block them immediatly, if i remember correctly; usually they send you a link and once you click them and/or fill the information wanted on the “site”, the information you entered in there will be sent to them and gain access to your bank/instagram account. And steal your money or try to trick your mutuals with the same tactic.

- Nobody would DM you with these type of asks. Now, the messages they are sending are copy pasted from their other victims. Even the photos they use are from pinterest, just make a quick search and you’ll see. If they send you proof, try to reach to the artist and ask. Even the “proof” these accounts sends you are fake, Photoshopped and/or made with help of a another scammer. Other then, the accounts they are dming you with will always look suspicious in a lot of ways, the followers, the posts (no descriptions or hashtags, or just weird ass stuff writen on the descriptions) and most importantly the usernames. Please think: if this person was an serious user, wouldn’t they choose a username that wasn’t ridiculously long or messy? The usernames they select are mostly things like “__.John._34__walter.” “mary.__3949.” Or somethings along these lines. (Those are made up examples btw)

I will link the bewares here (this message) if i can find some, since i don’t remember everything correctly.

I have a situation with an artist I am commissioning, but I don't plan on making it a PSA since it isn't that serious. I am just stuck on what to do.

Please note that if you want proof such as DM screenshots,  DM me and I will provide it. Any help is appreciated, thank you!

The Situation (Below Spoilers):

Back on the 19th of July this year, I came to an artist wanting to commission some art of two of my OCS as I have enough funds. I came to the artist via Twitter DMs, asking if they can do it, the artist said yes, and informed me that per request, they will ask for payment after sending a WIP for each request (NOT payment upfront) . While I typically avoid artists who have such a policy, I didn't avoid this artist as I have known them for quite a while via a mutual server we were once in and overall, trusted them as they had a pretty good reputable reputation. This is probably my mistake.

After initially accepting the request, my voucherer (keep in mind that I use vouchers for payment, in short someone else paying for me, usually as part of a deal such as a commission , character trade, etc from me. In this case, it's a character trade.) told me that they only have limited times of the week to make the payment, and told me that on a certain day they can make the payment ASAP, and the character trade can go through. With this message, I went to the artist on August 8th as they haven't communicated to me about a WIP so no payment could be sent yet, asking for a WIP.

The artist replied about 10 days later, on the 18th of August saying that they were sick and were unable to get on their PC, thus they haven't started on the comm. Understandable, but I also asked for an estimated time of when they could provide a WIP and the payment can get through, and they said the 21st. We also agreed that I could check in every 7 days , but fault on my part, I didn't really check in every 7 days...

Waiting for a provided WIP meanwhile, nothing happened. On the 21st, I asked for an update like the artist has promised, but got ghosted. On the 8th of this month (September) I checked in again for anything, but got no response.

To today as I type this, no response has been made from my last message, so I am wondering what should I do? Cancel the commission request and let me voucherer know about this (as we thought from the estimated time given, we can be rest assured about the payment being made and the character trade can go ahead...) so we can simply go find a different artist to commission and let the payment be made once and for all? Message them again? Continue to wait?

I am really tired of all this ghosting, so this is why I am asking for help-

EDIT: Got advice, not seeking anymore!
