[4/30] Code of Conduct Discussion

Posted 7 years, 11 days ago (Edited 6 years, 9 months ago) by admin

[4/30] We have updated the Code of Conduct to reflect the new rules as discussed on this thread.

We'll be leaving this thread up to take further suggestions and feedback on the rules in the future, as well as for keeping track of our history of changes to the COC, so please let us know either via this thread, or via the ticket desk or PM if you have any thoughts or concerns.

[4/30] Major changes:

  • We will now be enforcing behavioural conduct rules: this includes locking and deleting threads or characters which are overly hostile or aggressive.
  • NSFW artwork containing characters which are described as under 18 or described as appearing under 18 (or the equivalent age of adulthood in non-human species) are now prohibited. Note that this includes gratuitous violence towards minors which is presented as sexual or fetishised.
  • NSFW now has been separated into different content filter categories - please read up and let us know if you have any suggestions for further categorisation.
  • We may add content warnings to characters or forum posts that contain sensitive or offensive content, please don't remove these unless you also revise the content.
  • Accounts which contain nothing but, or a large ratio of parody or satire characters will have their Listing privileges revoked. Hateful or insulting satire is now strictly prohibited.
  • Public blacklisting is now explicitly allowed, albeit with restrictions on tone.
  • Report trolling/baiting is now disallowed.
  • Some information was added on how to properly report a scam - unfortunately a large quantity of tickets we can't do anything with currently because we lack sufficient evidence to take action.

Users will not incur retroactive warnings or account sanctions for any changes made to the Code of Conduct, but we will be going through and removing any old content that violates the new rules.

Or to make things maybe a bit easier different levels? Sort of like FA's three tier system for nsfw where it's like- medium and extreme so things that are borderline nsfw like pinups can have their own gentle classification but the more uh... hardcore things could be given a higher rating?

Just thinking that might make it easier for people to decide how extreme the stuff they wanna see is without having to get overly specific?

Hiyame If the characters a villain... for the most part I believe the Author is already showing that negative traits such as being a racist is undesirable. Which again at this point......... its honestly not so much the character so much as how the Author chooses to handle the topic if that makes sense. Like.. to tackle racism, the author certainly probably is going to need /racist/ characters for their story.. but there is a difference in sending the message of, lets not tolerate racism versus... racism is ok!!!

And while it certainly isn't 100% true that 'everyone' will see this character and suddenly undergo a transformation all "now I'm racist true!!!!" but it isn't 100% false either. But what matters is there is still a group of people that will be influenced by a character. As people can be influenced by their ideology when presented to them as a positive trait.

Judging by what the Admin said in their reply to you.... I'm pretty certain you are fine as you mentioned yourself, you don't put this stuff on TH and the stuff you do have is hidden O:

@GHOULONGTEA From what I understand both aren't ok? So its not picking and choosing here. Romantic/positive portrayals of Pedophilia that present it as unproblematic are not ok in the same way Homophobic characters that are romanticized/positive things treated as problematic are not ok. (as promoting homophobia to be ok has had harmful effects to the lgbt community in the same way positive portrayals of Pedophilia have harmed victims of child abuse)

But As the admin posted in their response, they seem open to portrayals of Pedophilia done with tact. (which I guess boils back down to the sokka example so long as its not being portrayed as a thing people should be.)

Hiyame Since they said

"For now, we would strongly recommend highly visible content warnings for pedophilia and child abuse to be added to the top of the character's page, and we'll look at more stricter rules in the future if we find the issue's pervasive or toxic. If you're worried about how your characters might be received and think they may be hurtful or triggering to other users, there's also the option of making them hidden / authorized users only, or Unlisting them. As long as you're respectful in the production of your content and thoughtful about how it effects the people who're exposed to it I don't think there should be any issues! "

I think this means you are safe! ^^b

Hiyame @ghoulongtea To clarify my previous post:

  1. We do not currently have plans to remove non-sexualised, non-fetishized, non-pornographic depictions of pedophilia - similarly to fictional representation of bigotry or abuse, it is allowed but we strongly encourage addition of content warnings as a courtesy to your viewers. Admins who see your character may elect to add these warnings themselves (this applies to all cases of offensive or sensitive content, not just pedophilia).
  2. We do not anticipate this changing unless we find that people are regularly abusing this to normalize pedophilic sentiment, "smexy shotas/lolis", etc. within the community, or if we find that TH users are consistently being exposed to pedophilic content which is depicted offensively and without sensitivity or consideration to csa survivors. Again, I don't really anticipate this happening - it's just a possibility which we'll figure the specifics out if or when it comes around. This is largely due to my strong personal preference as a site administrator to not have to moderate a community that encourages or enables adults to see children as viable sexual or romantic targets, as well as my personal feelings that children on the internet tend to be vulnerable to the grooming which comes about as a result of this kind of sentiment.

I hope I'm not coming off as hostile or critical - those're just my personal feelings on the matter; I do want to give people flexibility to explore their characters and stories, but the safety of TH users is extremely high in priority for me. Please let me know if you have more specific queries or concerns! To be honest, in practice, if your characters are already set to Private or Authorized-Only the only time you'll receive admin interference is if you're reported by a follower since admins won't ever just randomly go through users' private galleries.

Gabriel If you have specific concerns or questions regarding another user's designs, we would encourage filing a ticket or PMing the Admin account privately! We'll look into implementing the rest of your suggestions but in the meanwhile you can comment on tickets which have been resolved to let us know that we can close them immediately which will already save us plenty of time (thank you!) -- if there're any threads you'd like to be closed or deleted you can file a report on your own thread and get it closed fairly quickly as long as there's a mod currently available.

Inuee As long as there aren't any nipples that's fine! We'll be looking into adding different NSFW tags in the future to make filtering more customisable and flexible.

KnightOfSpring

admin idk man, but I feel like just because there are no nipples in a shirtless pic it shouldn't automatically be okay to post as SFW? What if there is art of a rather, uh...fetishized woman? Y'know, for example...typical hentai art. Heck, even if not fetishized, I don't get censoring nipples but not the breasts itself then...

Falu

I understand the reasoning behind NSFW for nipples but I don't know, I felt that being able to draw nipples as a non-sexualized thing freely was such a liberating feeling?
I guess I have mixed feelings about the NSFW rules for nipples.

Toyhou.se was one of the rare places that I felt nipples weren't portrayed as sexual and I felt really safe about it???
I guess once nipples are censored I start feeling unsafe about them sdkjsjkdf even though that sounds contradictory.
I feel unsafe that nipples are considered sexual now. What is considered sexual differs greatly from people to people and country to country...
Like there are naked beaches in Europe that everyone is super chill about because being naked isn't sexual there.

Rather than flagging nipples as NSFW... I would rather suggest just tags and a tag blacklisting system.
Because what people consider UNCOMFORTABLE differs.......
Like people can be uncomfortable seeing ears? People can be uncomfortable seeing scars?
But I don't think it's right to broadly umbrella everything because people are different.

Edit:
Is clippy inherently sexual? No. But people can sure as hell draw him pregnant.
Are nipples inherently sexual? No. But people can sure as hell include nipples in sexual acts.
In this case, mouths would probably be a very sexual, adult, nsfw thing, but is it really?

Because art is subjective, anything can be turned sexual and NSFW if they want it to.
But is the thing in question itself ACTUALLY sexual? No.

The tag system should cover all the bases for everyones DIFFERENT needs I feel, because it will be customizable for anyone not wishing to see specific things.
Whether it be people at work not wanting to look at NSFW, or people not wanting to see meme characters.

EmzeThe2nd

now most of my merpeople are nsfw due to the nipple thing, even though it isn't at all sexualizing. While i understand that you have to cover everything it still doesn't sit right with me

I don't know how to feel about it honestly

Ikayuro

I mean it's been gone over several times in this thread, but I don't agree with nipples being sexual - granted also, I don't care about seeing them in my inbox, either. Instead of putting a blanket rule over it and trying to sweep everything under the rug (which is what this all seems like, honestly, is there going to be anything that's allowed, anymore?), you should go ahead with the ability to either whitelist or blacklist tags, or have levels of NSFW- that way people can gauge what they'd like to see.

I'm sorry but, just because you don't want to see it, doesn't mean that something's sexual. I don't want to have to flag my male or male-identifying reference sheets because you can't handle two pink spots in your inbox.

I 100% agree with Falu here. It was nice to be on a website that wasn't childish about the idea of male nipples, and now it just feels like we're being punished for something because of a select few people. It's... nothing to be ashamed of. They're not sexual. Period. Ugh. OTL
