New Years
“5, 4, 3, 2, 1… Happy new year!”
The room broke out in cheers and yells. Mandy took a breath.
She couldn’t get the words out.
Someone pushed their lips against hers. They tasted like strawberries and their lips soft as silk.
She opened her mouth and took a step back. She caught the glint of golden earrings, of white streaks…
In front of her stood a blushing woman.
“I’m so sorry”, she blurted out, holding a hand to the cup of her own cheek. It looked as though she were cupping a flower.
“No, no, it’s okay!” Mandy replied. “It’s okay. It was, uh, it was nice, kissing you.”
“Uhm”, she turned her head down and smiled. “We could try again?”
She giggled.
“What’s your name? I don’t make a habit of kissing strangers.”
“I’m Joan, Joan Dorsey. We live in the same hall. I mean, obviously we do, since we’re both at this party, but uh… Now we’re not strangers anymore.” She smiled.
Mandy pulled her closer by her waist, running the fabric of her dress through her fingertips.
“Nice to meet you, Joan”, she breathed, before pulling her in for another kiss.
