a lot of these are old or older, consider them all noncanon because i can't make up my mind, they're not all finished, and i tend to write the same scene over and over again. this is just to have them all posted somewhere

Starlight

A soft song hovered over the room, settling on tables and Brooke’s ears. She sighed, holding her bruised fist near her ear, resting her head on the joints in her feeble fingers. She barely had the energy to hold herself up. She barely had the energy to register the music, nor the thunder whispering outside.

Light creeped across the floorboards, illuminating the curls of the rug’s fabric, illuminating the fingernails of the hand she was resting on her knee, giving name to the ridges of her nail. Bringing them an appearance, bringing them an existence.

The thunder muttered in her ears and when the lightning struck it was not like the spark of a match, but rather like a needle, inserted slow, steadily, precisely. The pain of it inserted itself right behind her eyelids, and when she closed them, she saw only the echoes of the lightning’s glow. The only proof that it had been there in the first place.

She hummed, trying to drown out the sight of it.

No tune in particular came to mind, only a song that her heart promised her she needed to sing.

It was slow, and quiet, and full of dips and drops, the highs and lows looking like a heartbeat on a monitor, a record of every breath you take, a library of every heartbeat, of every second, every moment you’re alive.
