Lekyr

Species created by heliacalrisen

Please understand that the palette included within this trait sheet must be adhered to. Lekyr should not be any darker than the darkest blue shown within that palette. This is so they can work with the lore they are given. Thank you.

History

The Frostlands can be a cruel and unforgiving biome; and the Lekyr are a clear representation of that. An ancient, enduring race born in the cold, and adapted to the cold, they are one of, if not the single most, feared creature one may come upon within the Frostlands. Few survive an encounter in the heart of the Frostlands with a Lekyr. Though some do exist amicably in the outer fringes of the Frostlands; the majority within the deeper reaches are very much hostile.

Some legends even tell of the Lekyr being as old as the Frostlands themselves, even stating the Lekyr as the first race to populate the Frostlands. Though such stories are purely rumor and the Lekyr have neither confirmed nor denied this theory.

What is most well known to historians who managed to study the Frostlands Lekyr and come back with their lives intact is that the Goddess of the Frostlands, the Lady of the North as the Lekyr most prominently call her, is the Lekyr's direct creator. Lekyr acknowledge this and seem to all exist for the sole purpose of being guardians of her land for her and protecting her along with all she creates. They do not tolerate disrespect toward her, and are more than willing to kill any who would disrespect their Goddess in front of them.

Physiology

Lekyr all follow the same basic biology. They stand 8-9 ft tall, though usually appear at first glance around 7-8 ft tall as they often stand hunched over. They have long digitigrade legs that end in large dragon-like feet; the particularly large feet were developed to make traveling across the snow easier. They function very similarly to how snowshoes do. Lekyr possess elongated arms which end in rather oversized clawed hands. The reasoning behind this is unknown, those who study the Lekyr and the more cooperative Lekyr have no real explanation for this particular trait. Their skin is always pale; following a white to light blue hue; this is helpful toward blending into the snowy environment. Lekyr eyes vary, but the most common are simple ice blue eyes. Every Lekyr possesses a mouth full of sharpened teeth, as well as sporting horns of ice on their heads. Some Lekyr (though not all) have been known to possess the ability to unhinge their jaw.

The ice horns upon a Lekyr’s head are an indicator of not only age, but power as well as health. If a Lekyr’s horns were to melt or chip off, it signals impending death. Upon the loss of their horns - a Lekyr will die. For this reason, they take great care to not leave the Frostlands, and should they do so, they make sure to go to a place that has a suitable freezing temperature. Being in a warmer biome for too long will cause their horns to begin to melt and the Lekyr to suffer health complications much similar to that of a heat stroke. Heat can and will eventually kill them. Lekyr have been known to have their horns start to chip if they are injured for an elongated period of time or if sickness takes a hold of them. Their horns can break off completely, at which point they will slowly and painfully die. Lekyr do their best to upkeep their horns.

Lekyr are strictly carnivorous. The consumption of any herbivore diet will actively make them sick. In times of hunger, Lekyr have been known to cannibalize their own kind.

Lekyr are entirely immune to the cold. They do not feel it - it is solely heat that they feel, and they despise heat greatly.

When it comes time to breed, Lekyr will seek out another willing to have a child. A biological male and female are needed in order to reproduce; Lekyr are considered to be within the mammalian family. They concieve in the exact same way humans do; though the female will carry the baby for only four months before giving birth. It is extremely rare, nearly unheard of, for more than one baby to be born at a time. If such a case occurs, it generally kills the mother as the stress of birthing more than one child is usually far too much for the mother's body to handle.

Parents will raise their child together for a total of two years, as the maturing of a Lekyr is rather quick. Upon reaching adulthood, the youngling will be forcibly kicked out of whatever territory it grew up in and told to find its own way. It is extremely rare for the child to hear from or see their parents again after this fact. Sometimes the parents even end up in a vicious fight over territory, one killing the other or both dying. Though not all parents end this way; some amicably split and go their separate ways. It is also not unheard of for a couple to stick together, though it is not a common thing to see. If there is a bond they feel they share - they can stick together.

The natural lifespan of a Lekyr is anywhere from 200 to 300 years before succumbing to the deterioration of their horns and subsequently death.

Culture

Most Lekyr are incredibly dangerous; they tend to be independant and extremely territorial. They often times live alone in marked off territory. Sometimes small feuds can erupt between two parties, and often it will end in death for one of the involved Lekyr. They are a prideful race, and often very, very cruel.

Lekyr that are deep within the Frostlands prefer to live in wooded areas or mountains. The rougher the terrain and the more hiding places or vantage points it provides, the happier the Lekyr are. They are natural born hunters, and simply prefer their hunting grounds to have many different options to launch an attack from. Few survive encounters with them in their natural habitats.

Lekyr that live deeper into the Frostlands still do wear clothing. Most of it is crafted from human bones and animal skins/furs; though some is stolen from their victims if it will fit them. Some keep theirs well fixed; others simply wear tatters until their next victim comes that has better bones or more fitting clothes. Some have been known to trade with others; rare are truces and friendships, but they do happen.

Most Lekyr are solitary creatures, though some are not. Some, while not wanting other Lekyr as company, still desire a loyal companion. In these times, they take a Frost Wolf under their care. Frost Wolves are rather giant wolves to most, but to the 8ft Lekyr, they are the perfect companion. The Lady of the North created Frost Wolves specifically for the Lekyr to have companions their size who are loyal, and every bit as vicious as the Lekyr themselves.

It is relatively common for a Lekyr to adorn their horns if they are particularly large. It is a show of their power. If a Lekyr has larger horns than another, often times the smaller horned Lekyr will back away from any confrontation in fear. Those who are most feared are Lekyr who have developed multiple sets of horns. These are given a wide berth and generally thought of as loose, violent cannons. These are the Lekyr most likely to commit cannibalism, or have already done so in the past. They are never to be fully trusted.

Lekyr can speak, and even have their own language. They are rather intelligent, and most do understand common languages. Those who have chosen to live farther into the Heartlands simply refuse to communicate with prey. Most of their only communication is amongst themselves. However, there are some with relatively small horns or simply those who have found compassion where cruelty should be, which live near the outskirts of the Frostland where their crueler, stronger brethren dare not lay foot (unless starving). This group of a kind and cooperative Lekyr, though small, communicate freely. Some even offer passage into the Frostlands, though most won’t go past the first marking they see that notes another, crueler Lekyr’s presence within the territory.

The small group of Lekyr that have been known to forsake their race's cruel ways and join villages in the Frostlands Outer Ring purposefully cut their horns short and keep them short as a sign of their willingness to cooperate and be kind to other races instead of considering them as food. These Lekyr go through great pain to keep their horns short; but seem more than willing and sometimes even happy to do so as it grants them trust and care within their communities. Lekyr that live deeper in the Frostlands despise these type of Lekyr, and if the Village Lekyr dare go deep into the Frostlands, they will often be killed and eaten by the other Lekyr.

Lekyr own a neutral ground within the Frostland that some go to in order to safely seek mates or trading. Getting there is the problem for most, as they are forced to traverse other Lekyr’s territory. This does kill quite a few; though some respect the desire to undertake the journey to the neutral grounds.

While the Lekyr are not an entirely religious race - they do respect the Goddess of the Frostlands. The Lekyr call her one of two names; the Lady of the North, or the Frost Mother. She has two Gods serving beneath her, of which preside over the forests and mountains of the region. The Lekyr have seen fit to call them the Spirit of the Forest and the Spirit of the Mountain respectively. Lekyr have a special shrine in their neutral grounds they keep well preserved. Inside the walls are inscribed with their history with the Lady of the North. It is said she created the Lekyr to protect the Frostlands from those who would seek to destroy its natural beauty. Many Lekyr take this seriously. Those who try to deny the Lady of the North’s existence are seen as bad luck or bad omens and often killed.

It is not unheard of that some of the violent Inner Ring Lekyr partner together with small villages of Snow Elves, as these Snow Elves are granted the unique ability to tend to and grow the Moonfrost Flower - the flower of the Lady of the North. These Lekyr will partner with these villages and protect them fiercely as they revere the Moonfrost Flower and respect the Snow Elves who can grow them.
