Pixie Dragons are a common species that can be found in any forested or botanical biome in Frelandi. Known for their intelligence and friendliness. They do not require taming and often can communicate with other species, picking up other languages quickly. They like to become guardians of local gardens and orchards.

APPEARANCE/ AT A GLANCE

Pixie Dragons are unique for their sectioned, butterfly-like wings, often split into four sections. While in some cases they can have different kinds of wings, they are most well known for these butterfly wings they create a dazzling display of colour when they fly. The back is lined with leaf shaped scales that serve as protection and camouflage. They grow bushes and trees from around their legs and chest, that encompasses their neck like a mane. They have butterfly wing-like ears and fins on their tail that usually match the patterns of their wings, and have a brightly coloured portion on the underside of their throat for intimidation and courtship.

Pixie Dragons are herbivorous fae dragons that inhabit many countries and areas across Frelandi. They are named Pixie Dragons for their spritely nature, but also for the fact many species of small fae choose to reside in the foliage that grows on their body. In some cases, small built homes can be found amongst the branches of their foliage, where small communities have been built. While they can talk and have their own complex society, they frequently choose to reside amongst towns and cities, posing as guardians of nature in the area. In many cases, they will assist farmers and other workers, becoming mounts and pack mules to transport materials and produce.

They are overly empathetic and sensitive to others’ emotions. They are attuned to the earth and will tell you if there are issues with the area.

To court a mate Pixie Dragons are known to flaunt their brightly coloured throat. The more brightly coloured and patterned the throat is, the more attractive the potential mate. Pixie Dagons will court their mates by presenting a collection of trinkets they have amassed and perform a dance, in which they circle the potential mate and sing them a song which consists of trilling, cooing and other bird-like sounds. They will flap their wings and butterfly-like appendages to create a dazzling display of colour.

Should the display of courting be successful, those Pixie Dragons will mate for life. They will have an average of 3-8 eggs each year and gestation lasts for 6 months before the eggs are laid in a carefully crafted hollow. Upon being placed in this hollow in the ground, the eggs will be covered with dirt and over the course of 2 months, a large flower will sprout holding the hatchling inside until it is ready to bloom. When ready, the flower will open up, releasing the hatchling and allowing it to slip out and find its first meal, which is often small insects and fallen fruits.

Hatchlings will remain near their birth flower, exploring their surroundings and growing stronger until they reach the juvenile stage, where they will begin to venture further until they find a place they want to remain. The birth flower remains brilliant and healthy as long as the Pixie Dragon is alive and well.

Pixie Dragons are capable of learning human speech within Frelandi, including the multiple languages of different countries and islands. Their voice is otherworldly, echoing regardless of where they are. Their voice can often be described as magical for its lightness, regardless of the topic at hand. While many learn to speak the language of humans, they frequently vocalise through sounds similar to that or a wide range of songbirds.
