"Chanse I want you to listen to me. You probably are smart enough that your mother isn't going to be here anymore. I'm going to do my best for you and your little brothers. But I can't do this all by myself... Will you help me take care of the family?"
- Michael
Because of Chanse's father, Michael's busy schedule - working for the law in Japan, he was often away from home. Chanse's mother had very little to no problems about it until she gave birth to quadruplets.
While his father was on the case regarding the accusation of a famous musician and singer, Lusu. He befriended one of the celebrity's sons that went by the name of Hope. Since they've first met, they've attended the same schools together starting from their early elementary years. And Chanse often sought for Hope's support every time things grew tense in Ransford's home and even so when they divorced soon after.
Chanse was only a child when his mother left their home, leaving him and his father almost stuck when taking care of four toddlers. But thankfully, these events occurred after solving Lusu's case - so he and Hope were able to help - leaving Chanse an opportunity to continue school with ease.
"I had plenty of opportunities to continue singing. And Viktor seems hellbent into getting me to graduate sooner than most. As much as I want to... I don't want to leave you behind. I don't want to lose you in the process, my friend."
- Hope.
With the help of Hope and his father, he followed his best friend and attended a prestigious academy after elementary. Hope, especially, was a popular figure among campus but he never fails to be by his best friend's side every single day.
But Hope was often sought after inside and outside of the school. He felt worried he was going to be left behind, he worked hard enough in his studies and other school activities to at least be in the same level as him. Popularity was the least of his worries, but he didn't want to depart from Kirisawa just yet.
With the help of Hope's mentor (Viktor), they graduated rather early from the academy and immediately flew over to America to attend University.
"Never! Never in the world I will let you die this way. You don't need to tell me anything. But please don't hide away from me when you're suffering. What kind of friend would I be... if I can't do anything to help you."
- Hope
Despite being in University with the full support of Hope's mysterious patron(s). He wanted to at least earn some of the money for himself during his days living in or near the campus. He took up a part time job for modeling with Baron in order to pay for meals and other luxuries. While working in a couple of photography studios, he met a beautiful woman from Korea and instantly fell in love with her.
Before they were even married, Ransford discovered that she was pregnant with their child. To Chanse, this was a perfect opportunity to propose to her. And for the past year, he's kept it a secret from Hope (who seemed busy on his side of work) until their wedding plans were fully set up.
Yet before those ideas came into play, he fumbles upon the most painstaking news in his life. His fiancé didn't survive a car accident while he flew to Japan for a few days to visit his father. Her passing highly affected Chanse's mental state and he completely withdrew himself from reality. Even at this point, he's never told Hope about the situation - making his best friend rather worried for his wellbeing.
Depression has kicked in for a long while, in which Chanse could not really find any way to fix the solemn feeling. The negative effect that the man was feeling brought him into a stage of exhaustion and unhealthy habits of heavy drinking. One day, Chanse figured he'd try ending himself by throwing himself off of the docks and into the ocean, which was a decent way to commit suicide since he failed to learn how to swim. Although his attempt fail due to Hope's suspicion and he was saved by his dearest friend - which now snapped him out of depression and worked himself out of the negative emotions laid upon him. Give it about another few months, he was acting normal and cheery like he had felt before the tragedy started. And whenever he felt anything similar to sadness, Hope was the first to know - hoping that he'd be by his side when it's necessary.
Chanse follows Hope after the both retired from their musical and modeling career and turned to becoming teachers. The two best friends worked in trying to get their degree and successfully earned their jobs working together as Elementary teachers.
"You're a nice man, Chanse. But... has anyone ever told you that there's something off about you? Especially that smile of yours. Looks like there's something wrong. And don't act surprised either - I can see right through you."
- Elliot
Chanse is settled down comfortably in the home with his best friend. He dedicates most of his time to the children in his school - carefully planning, grading assignments, making different activities. It looked as if the children were his highest priority.
But realistically he works endlessly to make sure all of his students are happy. And to keep the thoughts of the past away from his brain. Especially when he can't constantly rely on Kirisawa nor keep him all to himself all the time. Most especially when he was watching Hope turn his interests to a young woman, he needed other things to keep his mind off any sad emotions dwelling within him.
Through Hope, Chanse was introduced to Emery and her lovely group of friends. Despite being invited to spend time with their group circle, he often distancing himself from them in order to work on his own activities like grading school work or just spend time with his dog. But realistically - they were all excuses to be alone or didn't want his appearance to drag anyone down.
And when he thought he was good at covering up his emotional struggles though his constant laughing and wide smiling - Emery's friend, Elliot, was the very first person to see through his façade. Ransford, was more shocked at the confrontation when they were alone in Baxter's bakery. Chanse was not sure if there was a point that Baxter was trying to get through, but Elliot's caught the teacher's attention for a very long time.
Exchanging a few small conversations with Elliot in his bakery doesn't seem very practical when it came to helping his mental health. But Ransford always felt refreshed to have a conversation where he can feel very honest about himself.
