Design Notes

  • She has runes regularly applied up and down her neck and back that allow her to retain control over her abilities. Their failure in the past resulted in an overload, which eventually lost her the usage of her arms.
  • She's inspired by Ming-Hua from LoK, and utilizes her powers in a similar fashion. (She's also slightly based on Capt. America!)
  • Her suit is equipped by a specialized set of runes that can be controlled by the application of energy. The underlayer is put on in a stretched version, which shrinks down to size around her when she uses the correct rune. She can summon the armor sections at will, a la Iron Man, and disassemble it in a similar fashion.
  • After the incident, she struggled to manipulate the energy comprising her arms in a way that allowed her to continue playing music. She's still working to regain the fine motor skills required, but until then, she's been using electronic music programs to continue on with her art.
  • She, Hera, and Inara are connected by forces they do not yet understand....

Personality

"Follow CCM's lead, he knows more than I do here. And don't puke on the science."

Segen Nichols is, at first glance, a soldier. She's strong, level-headed, and confident- with an unabashed grin in the face of danger, and an uncanny ability to adapt as needed in the heat of battle. She's got commendations for her commitment to her team, her training, and her strength in the face of calamity.

She's also got stick-and-poke tattoos she got in a bathroom from one of her bandmates before a set, and piercings scarred over because she wasn't allowed jewelry during training. Before her powers, before AEGIS, she had many, many plans that didn't include fighting for a supramundane organization. She had callouses on her fingertips from the frets of her guitar, and a voice strengthened from years of scales and training.

She didn't expect to end up here, with a rag-tag group of supers, and her face on pamphlets, and her motive reduced to files and sentences and confidential mission statements. But now that she is, she's damned as well going to do her best to live up to expectations and keep her new 'family' safe.

And maybe teach them a few new songs while she's at it.

Likes

  • Conspiracy theories & urban legends. Tell her about cryptids. She will go out of her MIND (and clearance!) trying to find an explanation.
  • Music! Originally, guitar, bass, piano, drums. Has now adapted to electronic/computer formats. Absolute BEAST with a looper.
  • Her old band! Seventh Sentinel's rebranded from their original cryptid-based music, but they're still active- and a well-known band! She still goes to their concerts when she can! (And has an open invitation to return.)
  • Tattoos! It's a bit of an ask finding something that works with the invulnerability (and isn't restricted to govt use) but she's committed to finding something.

Dislikes

  • Her own pageantry as scripted by A.E.G.I.S. As much as she doesn't want to admit it, her parents have made some applicable points about the glorification of high school supramundanes playing roles assigned by questionable organizations.
  • Her A.E.G.I.S. recruitment billboards. She *does* like defacing them, though.
  • Being told that something doesn't exist, or isn't explainable. Magic's just a form of science that isn't fully understood yet.
  • Water. It starts to boil if it makes contact with the energy beams that make up her arms.

Story

Segen started out as the lead bassist for Seventh Sentinel. She'd almost been a drummer, then Elodie Mayfield happened and she'd been left to choose between bass and electric, and she didn't have the mental fortitude to hear Ant butcher Seven Nation Army's riff one more time. She'd just gotten used to that when her brother joined AEGIS, disappeared, and left her to deal with her hero-averse parents. It wasn't fair, and it wasn't right that she had to be the one smuggling comic books into the house to share with her younger sisters. It was insult to injury when he reappeared by way of a briefcase in their old hideout. And it was even worse when that thing inside electrocuted her into unconsciousness and she woke up with powers. But the real cherry on top was when AEGIS took her too, and made her, the 'miracle of Halcyon' their poster child for supramundane outreach.

Relationships

Segen was prepared for the attention that came with having celebrity vigilante 'Genesis' as a part of her team. She knew what it was like to be under the weight of constant attention, expectation, and at times crippling pressure. And, as it seemed, Indigo was no stranger to that.

What she didn't prepare for was the difference they handled said notoriety. Segen, on one hand, endured rigorous training to maintain the A.E.G.I.S. image of professionalism and leadership. She ensured she responded in the appropriate manner to threats on the battlefield, and removed herself when necessary with the appropriate method for retreat.

Indigo, on the other, yelled 'get bent' and flipped at breakneck speed into the distance after knocking out her enemies. Segen's still not entirely sure how to follow that.

Segen met Fiend twice- once, before his transformation when she needed help with a science test and he was a recommended tutor. And then for a second time, when she approached him out of the blue for help on her end-of-assessment science exam. She was, admittedly, a bit shocked after realizing he was the same person as before, but his files matched up- and his transformation did explain why he'd ghosted her at their next study session.

She'd hadn't been able to figure out where she'd gone then- but she's happy to have her friend back, and what's more, as a permanent part of her team.

Segen considers it her job to know about the members of her team. She doesn't need their secret identities, files, or a full and comprehensive essay on their history. But she does like to know their motives. What she does know about Carbon's Cosmic Messenger is that he's there to help. He's bold, enthusiastic, kind- more than willing to fight for the team without a moment's hesitation. But she doesn't know why.

She's tried to ask as to his history, but he's proven flighty at best over questions about his past, and confrontational at the worst when she's suggested adhering to  A.E.G.I.S.'s requirements and questions in exchange for assisting when it comes to the day-by-day needs of a super. She still thinks there's more to him, but has realized that she's overstepped boundaries as is, and much prefers his friendship over her own understanding. And he's more than earned her trust as is- even if Segen knew nothing else about him besides his track record with the team, she'd be able to rely on him being there when they needed him. And in the midst of their recent, increasingly dangerous missions? That's the most important thing.

Selena's an interest of Segen's. Well, technically- she's an interest of A.E.G.I.S., who formally put her on the team to keep an eye on her and her father. But Segen's unconvinced that 'Eclipse' is even connected to Elio Sol anymore- much less working with him of her own free will.

Nevertheless, she's committed to  keeping a careful watch on Selena to ensure she remains safe and willing to continue her alliance with the organization. Unfortunately, that's been more complicated than expected when it comes to her team's current assignments.

Segen doesn't know a lot about Dragonfly, other than the fact that she's lightning-quick with a rapier, has a knack for asking the right questions, and that her abilities are likely similar to either enhanced reaction, superstrength, or some kind of regeneration.  It would be pretty insane if someone who literally just had a sword kept throwing herself into supramundane conflict without more protection than just a fencing uniform, right?
