Design Notes

  • Alicanto ships are controlled by a medallion that serves as a telepathic middleman between the pilot and the vessel. It makes control easy to transfer between captains as needed. Or, rather, it would, if Hera hadn't found the runes inside her medallion, and inked them on her thigh using a tattoo machine she made off a YouTube tutorial. (Don't... don't do this.) The direct link made the ship's medallion obsolete and gave her full control of the Tenacious, hence Alicanto's beef with the young pilot.
  • Her eyes, and all of her tattoos, including the runes, glow and are a direct representation of the ship's energy output. Energy buildup = bright glow! No glow = no power.
  • She has a pair of flare guns that she uses in place of actual weapons, given the restraints put in place by her superiors. When she prepares to shoot, the glow of her tattoos react in turn, becoming the brightest around her hands upon ignition.
  • Alicanto pilots are required to hide the fact that their medallions are the source of their ability, and mock guide the ship using their gauntlets instead. (Plus it just.. makes them look cooler.)
  • When undertaking a stealth mission, Hera's required to wear the equivalent of blackout curtains in the form of a turtleneck and a hood to obscure the glow of her abilities. It's incredibly stuffy, and she hates it.

Personality

Hera ‘Put That Thing Back Where It Came From Or So Help Me God I Will Turn This Ship Around’ Salazar is the current pilot of the airship Tenacious (formerly Praxidice). Officially, she's tasked with the thankless job of (safely) transporting heroes from one end of the city to the other. Unofficially, she's taking every job she can and saving up to prepare for a life of piracy when the company she works for, Alicanto, inevitably decides to fire her for insubordination.

Until then, that means fulfilling her role as a chauffeur to the best of her ability, even if that means trying to take over the roles of the heroes as her own at times when they're not doing their job well.  As frustrating as it can be, she enjoys the challenge, the fast-paced environment, and the little battles of wits that are won by putting authorities on hold since she has Better Things To Do, Thank You Very Much.   She rarely stops working, can be impatient when it comes to something (or someone!) being less efficient than they can be, and struggles with periods of rest or confrontation of emotion. She's also got a decent sense of humor and does her best to crack a joke in the face of her opposition, but she's got terrible timing and always remembers the best comebacks ten minutes too late.

Likes

  • Capri Sun. She drinks it exclusively out of flasks, and she's got multiple hidden around the ship on ice. It's getting to be a legitimate problem.
  • Tattoos! They glow. :D
  • Earplugs. Bless you, Tris.
  • Strange Yan parodies of Cam's music. It annoys the HELL out of him.

Dislikes

  • McDonalds. If she has to try and go through the drivethrough one more time with her massive ship, she's going to McFricking lose it, Cam.
  • AEGIS. Do you know the trouble it takes to get around their regulations???
  • Solid ground. She's the most powerless away from the ship, and the sky has become her comfort zone.
  • Being told there's only one way to do things. If education is limited by regulations, there's something someone's trying to hide.

Story

After flying too close to the sun and choosing to challenge the laws of inheritance, Hera took her birthright by force and tied the Tenacious to her psyche without Alicanto's direct approval. They've been out for blood ever since. Her superiors have never made any great secret about the fact they believe she’s too young to be a pilot, and keep assigning her to grunt work despite her qualifications. In return, she's sworn that she's going to follow their every rule to a 't', unless she can find loopholes out of it, that is- and nothing's going to stop her from being the best damned pilot Halcyon's ever seen.

Her current employer, Cam 'Nightingale' Cygnus, though? He's certainly going to try. It’ll be fine.

The first member of the Tenacious's crew, the (unofficial) designated  copilot, and Hera's personal bodyguard. She showed up one day, and Hera went with it. It seemed like she needed a place to stay, and there have always been rooms set aside for that exact purpose- though hers has become permanent, so long as Eleanor likes. She's an integral member of the team, and once bit a Capri Sun out of Cam's hand once- so, in short, she won't be going anywhere anytime soon.

Upon her interest, Hera began training Eleanor as the Tenacious's copilot, and the two have bonded over their talks at the helm of the ship since then. And despite Alicanto's insistence that Hera must have a properly trained co-pilot of their own choosing, Hera's been wholeheartedly ignoring that demand in the pursuit of letting someone in on the trials and accomplishments that come with flying a ship like Tenacious.

As troublemakers onboard the Tenacious go, Dani's quieter about it than others but a threat nonetheless. In the same room with Cam, they both collectively lose brain cells, and it takes constant collaboration with Tris to keep them both alive and only partially maimed.

Aside from the chaos, Dani and Hera have a quiet, good-natured rivalry, and have raced each other across Halycon more than once. (Hera won, but Dani's finding more and more ways to catch up. It's genuinely concerning the lengths she'll go to.) Dani's chaotic and unpredictable, and quite possibly has a death wish, but she's also persistent and a force to be reckoned with.

On another note entirely, she's introduced Hera to a cooking game that is endlessly addicting and frustrating in equal measure and she's not allowed to leave the team until Hera beats the high score. It might take a while.

As far as Hera is concerned, Blaze does not exist in the official records of the Alicanto manifests. He's an occasional passenger, when Alicanto finds proof of his existence, but Hera's always managed to forget his name. It's been recorded as Bays, in the past. Or Bly? Lays? Hayes? On official transcripts, or during interviews aboard the ship. As soon as her Alicanto superiors aren't looking, though, she unlocks the compartment beneath the pantry and ensures her newest resident that they still haven't learned of his existence upon the ship.

When it's quiet on the Tenacious (it's rare, but truly hallowed), Hera and Blaze discuss the mechanics of  the ship to pass the time. It's a great comfort to Hera, and Blaze is genuinely fascinated by the way the components work together to ensure the airborne vessel remains in the sky. Their chats over snacks and Capri Sun in fancy cups have also served as a way to get to know her new friend beyond his escapades as a super. And with every conversation, her resolve to keep him out of AEGIS's spotlight only grows- even if it means breaking more and more rules the longer he's on board.

The aforementioned employer. When he's not causing problems, resetting the 'days since last incident' counter to zero, or ordering McDonalds from that One, Very Certain McDonalds from Halfway Across The City, Cam's headlining as Nightingale, pop/rockstar icon extraordinaire.

Constantly embroiled in controversy, from debates over the morality of (literally) emotionally impactful music to questionable Twitter posts, Cam brings a (lot) of attention to the Tenacious and its crew. Far more than Hera ever expected to deal with.  But she's managed, by some miracle, to tolerate him. (And Cam makes that a more and more difficult choice to live with every day.)

What she doesn't know is that his attitude is (at least partially) by  necessity- he's been (secretly) tasked by Alicanto, Hera's employer, to get her fired.

It's going to be awkward when they realize they've unconsciously united Cam and Hera against a common enemy (authority.)

Tris is Cam's agency-designated bodyguard, in part due to his abilities, but also because nobody else could handle him for more than 24 hours straight. The record beforehand was 14, and a lot of people lost money when he made it past that. (Cam included.) He and Hera have an unspoken bond in the form of the phrase 'please, God, give me strength' and share a quiet (cam)araderie when it comes to ensuring that their resident loose cannon doesn't cause more trouble than he solves.

They ensure they always have extra earplugs on hand, snacks, and duplicates of Cam's extensive wardrobes, and- no, this isn't just an underpaid babysitting gig, but yes, they will be putting it, in those terms, on their resumes. She also ensures that she has extra of Tris's favorite candies in a stash in the pantry- so he stops hiding them in the air vents.
