Personality

“I just want a Starbucks. I didn’t ask for all this attention.”

Once an urban legend in the realm of corporate sabotage, Jean Deaux helped fight corruption from the innermost circles of high-profit businesses and corporations from the time she was 14. As with anything she learned, she took to her new trade quickly and wholeheartedly, her trademark focus an asset as she outpaced all expectations set for her. She was told she was so talented at mimicking others, it was near-impossible for those around her to pin down where her exact 'self' lay within. And as though she was told it was complimentary, it hit too close to the truth she'd held close to herself- it was just as hard for her as those around her.

Alone, she was content. Sure, her movements were stilted and awkward, but there was nobody to tell her that, or stop her from curling up in a corner when she needed a break. With people, it was exhausting. She was constantly on guard, doing her best to act like they did, or how she needed to on the job. And getting to know people, when she was two-faced by necessity, by trade? At times, it seemed better not to try.

Thankfully, her new team knew better than that.

Likes

  • Photography. Or, as she'd prefer to call it, 'gathering references'. Capturing the humanity of a moment is where she finds the most truth in a situation, and she likes to try and figure out the story around it. Or come up with one of her own.
  • Makeup. She freakin' loves makeup. It's only served to enhance her transformations, and her recommended page on YouTube is just. Full of makeup tutorials throughout different styles and ages.
  • Info
  • Modern tech. The internet is GREAT, there's so much to learn and catch up on, read, watch, and games now? It blows her mind.
  • Things from her 'time'. She didn't take enough to be a kid as it was, and had a list of games she never got around to playing, and shows she didn't get around to watching. Give her anything from the early 2000's, and she'll get a case of 'rapid-onset allergies'.

Dislikes

  • Modern tech. She's had to do a deep dive on security and surveillance, and she's come out of it wary of hacking/third party observation. Privacy is a commodity few can afford in this brand-new existence.
  • Taking peoples' abilities. She only does this if she has to; generally, it's a risk given her level of experience, knowledge of the subject, and the person's innate power.
  • Things being 'in' and 'out' of style (or inherently gendered!). It's pointless critiquing someone's fashion for not adhering to the latest fads when trends are short-lived and ultimately circular. Also, clothes are fabric, and don't care who wear them.
  • CEO's who think they're gods. She's never met one who can't bleed, one way or another.

Story

Upon discovering that collective punishment was considered a war crime under the Geneva Conventions, Jean took it upon herself to protest her school's 'unfair' habits (group projects) and staged a week-long walk out in fifth grade. Her antics, many of which were subtle rebellions, untraceable to her particular involvement, only increased from there. As she'd told her parents many times before, she needed more of a challenge.

Deaux signed up to the world of corporation investigation (and occasional sabotage!) at the age of 13 1/2. Her parents, hesitant, intended keep her to the smallest of assignments, basic training, and job shadowing around the compound, but her talent as a shifter turned too many heads, far too quickly- for that to last. Caught up in the whirlwind of assignments and approval from her supervisors, she was pushed into a world more complex and dangerous than anyone could've foreseen.

The full scale of Jean's predicament only came into focus when she was removed from her timeline by A.E.G.I.S., a preeminent supramundane agency and brought to 2016 from 2001. There, she discovered that her future (present?) self, codename 'Patchwork', was attempting to track her down. To Jean's horror, she discovered that Patchwork's intent was to 'access' enough of her current genetic material to restore her now-permanently exhausted abilities. Faced with the choice of refusing to assist AEGIS and being effectively stranded with her future self on her trail, Jean agreed to do what she could to help capture Patchwork.  Forced to rely on the agency's protection from then on, she took on the cover identity of an aspiring hero in the newly-formed team 2-Liberi, in the hopes their collective protection could protect her future.

Unfortunately, her new team didn't take too long when it came to discovering her present. And the truths of her past? Well, she's not about to give all of her secrets away. This is business, after all.

Relationships

"I though you were bae. Turns out... you're just fam." [...]

After becoming suspicious about Jean Deaux’s origin, Beth Egami discovered the truth AEGIS was trying to hide: her brand new teammate was a supervillain. Well, the younger form of one, at least. She brought the concern to her superiors, only to find they knew- and expected the team to go along with it. Realistically, Jean knew that they shouldn’t take it personally. Superheroing, of course, was just another form of business.  But out of everyone on 2-Liberi, they’d seen Beth, and her green hair and collection of 'old' video games- (Halo: Combat Evolved, in particular) and they'd seen a reminder of home- and more than that, a friend.

Perhaps it's still worth pretending, if they have a chance at getting their hands on that damned video game.

"Backstreet's Back, alrIGHT... badadada."

Blake was intimidating for about five seconds. Then, she asked what flavor dish soap Jean thought was best to get bubblegum out of a Brunello Cucinelli Cashmere, and the effect was completely ruined. But it didn't stop them from deciding that codename 'Feral' would be their first (and very enthusiastic) strategic ally on 2-Liberi.

What Jean failed to take into consideration was Blake's wholehearted loyalty and increasing level of concern towards her 2016-stranded self. She didn't deal in terms of quid pro quo or expect anything in return for her friendship. And no matter what Jean tried, said, or did to convince her otherwise, it didn't stop Blake from being ride or die. Even if it meant taking the heat for Jean’s antics once in a while.

"Mug shot? I don't even drink coffee."

Copper's a technical wizard with an ongoing plan to force 2-Liberi into actual communication via duct-taping them together. Jean respects and fears her in equal measure. Initially introduced  as a source of reliable information on the basics of modern tech, she became a source of both interest and concern. Being around someone with such an obvious aptitude for government systems didn't exactly put Jean at ease- until Copper demonstrated how to hack them. Since then, Jean's considered her a respectable ally, and Copper's attempts toward befriending her have been unexpectedly effective. But Jean's still not letting her guard down anytime soon- especially  whenever she's within arm's reach of duct tape .

"STOP, I could've dropped my croissant."

Sadie's got a terrifying specter form and could be an expert at jump-scares, in Jean's opinion, if she didn't ruin it by apologizing to the chairs she bumped into while she was half-opaque. She occasionally disappears through the walls and the floor, and struggles to stay corporeal when it comes to vehicles either. But she's damned good in a fight, and has proved she's more than capable of carrying on her family's legacy- whether they believe it or not. It's Jean's goal to boost her new friend's confidence- and find a horror movie that actually manages to scare her.

Lipstick??? In My Valentino White Bag????

Don't let the angel wings fool you. Celestial or otherwise, Gabi's still everyone's favorite mean-girl on 2-Liberi. Unless you're Jean- who considers her the perfect intended recipient of any number of ill-advised pranks. She's got fame in excess, more designer clothing than most people would see from runway collection compilations on Pinterest in a lifetime, and attitude to pull off any look she wants. Unfortunately, the more Jean gets to know her, the more difficult it is to keep seeing her as a prissy know-it-all. She's (albeit slightly resentfully) helped outfit the rest of the team, saved everyone's skin on more one occasion, and has gone through just as much pain on her way to 2-Liberi as anyone else. Jean's not going to stop 'borrowing' her Versace though.
