Profile
Laydem Makiya
Basics
Personality
On the surface, Laydem comes off as a calm, patient, and thoughtful troll, someone who seems well-put-together and perfectly content with his life. However, beneath this calm persona is a doubtful, paranoid troll who has a tedency to overthink things. In stark contrast to how he treats others, he is far less patient with himself as his own worst critic, casting doubt on who he is and how much of what he loves is because of his environment and expectations he was raised with, or if they are things he truly does love. He wants to feel more like an individual rather than another cog in the machine, and yet he is one of the few trolls he knows who likes his job and who's interests and demeanour would make him fall into the 'jadeblood stereotype,' making him even less sure of himself. Like the majority of his caste, Laydem works below the surface of Alternia within the brooding caverns where he looks after the Mother Grub and tends to her many eggs. Most people think he uses his scythe to slay sick and mutated wigglers, but he's actually a bit more merciful than his peers and is more likely to sneak off with them to his hive when nobody is looking.

Story
Early Life
Laydem grew up in a small circle of hives with the rest of his jade blood cloister down in the brooding caverns. While he rarely got to see his lusus since he would work for long hours in the caverns, he would be happy to come home and reunite with them. Laydem was fairly tight with the jades in his cloister- one male jade who lead the cloister and four other female jades-but he was closest with the male jade leader. When he was younger, Laydem wasn't aware of how rare male jades were until he heard the other girls mention it offhand. However, he didn't fully realize how unique he was until he was a little older. When Laydem was about 5 sweeps old, he had been following a rogue group of lusi that had been frightened by some drones until he was lead down a dead-end tunnel. Laydem recklessly didn't get any of the other jades of his cloister to help since they were all taking care of the rest of the rogue lusi elsewhere. When he cornered them, he tried to help, but instead of taming them, one rhinophant lusus charged into him, impaling him with its horns before throwing him into a wall to bleed to death. However, instead of passing away, his skin began to glow brightly, illuminating the tunnel and scaring off the lusi. He stood up and noted that the wounds in his chest were healing, then freaked out when he saw his hands were glowing. While trashy romance novels about rainbow drinkers were relatively uncommon, Laydem had seen them referenced a few times online and recognized what had happened to him.
Dissapearnce
Figuring he would be culled because of this new condition, Laydem covered his head with his cloak like a hood and ran out of the tunnel. Unfortunatley, because he was running abnormally fast and wasn't paying attention to where he was going, he didn't notice the trail of wiggler bloodshed he had left in his wake until he had reached the exit and turned around to see what he had done. Revolted with himself, he hid away in his hive, knowing he had to get to the surface to escape the other jades and the drones as soon as possible. After some investigation while the others were still at work, he secured a route out of the caverns and fled to the surface with his lusus. Laydem made his way to the nearby woods to set up a make-shift cave hive where he foraged for fruits and vegetation, rejecting his newfound cravings. Unfortunatley, his isolation was disturbed by a few traveling troll and, assuming the highblood snitches would rat him out to the drones, he reluctantly killed them to ensure his own safety. Laydem was driven into deeper guilt and shame, but took this pain and used it to motivate himself to find ways to tame his own new abilities. It took awhile, but he eventually figured out how to turn off the glow in his skin and got used to his faster running speed. With a better grasp on these perks, he returned to the brooding caverns unannounced a half sweep later to resume work. The other jades of his cloister welcomed him back with tears of relief, thinking he had been dead the whole time. He told them that he had come down with a serious illness that required him to quarrantine, refusing to dilvuge his secret to anyone else.
Land of Marble and Candles
Laydem’s land is the Land of Marble and Candles (LoMaC). While most of the land is mostly comprised of vast stretches of peachy-colored field grass, marble mountains, and monlithic candle pillars that have stood unlit for millenia, there are also a few marble cities scattered across the land. Dark green crocodile consorts inhabit these towns day and night with many different acitvites occuring in both times of day from parades to street fairs to holiday celebrations. Many of the older crocodiles have been noticing a growing apathy amongst their populations, people slowly losing their ability to feel and emote across the land. They hold so many celebrations and parties in an effort to maintain as much emotion and energy as they can, but their efforts are ultimately in vein with the problem continuing to worsen. Some wonder if the denizen, Agape, is experiencing some kind of problem up in their tower, and if the candles that have remained unlit for so long have something to do with it. As the knight of heart in his Sgrub session, it is up to Laydem to help Agape and figure out a way relight the candles to return the light to the darkened land of LoMaC.
The Betrayer
The Betrayer was a jadeblood troll who existed before and after the Great Rebellion of Alternia. He was infamously known as the cold-hearted thief who would cheat and swindle whatever he desired from countless victims. Jade bloods who used to work alongside him reported that he was dissatisfied with brooding cavern work and that one night, he somehow managed to escape, changing identities as needed and keeping himself under the radar while adapting to surface life. Having grown jealous of those above him who were fat with power and resentful of those below him who never believed he'd amount to anything, he turned to a life of crime to take revenge on the world. During the time of the Great Rebellion, he was asked by a group of highbloods to investigate some claims about an alleged anti-imperialist base who wished to stage a rebellion in exchange for a fortune of money. He gets his title "The Betrayer" from when he infiltrated the base, "befriended" everyone, then sold them all out to the highbloods. The loss of this base dealt a massive blow to the rebels and the rebellion crumbled shortly after.
Related
Laydem and his lusus have a fairly good relationship. His lusus took very good care of him as a young pupa and would always cuddle with him on the loungeplank to watch movies or curl up just outside his recupracoon. Nowadays, his lusus is very independent and aloof, but still enjoys cuddles and scratches behind the ears.
Laydem met Torkis early in his life when he was first introduced to his jadeblood cloister. They became quick friends and Laydem spent most of his early life with Torkis, considering him to be a close friend. After Laydem's disappearance from work, they were able to reunite once more and tried to pick up from where they left off, growing closer together since.
Laydem met Xenith when he had snuck out of the caverns to visit a troll for some weapon repairs. Although he wouldn't admit it, it was a hate crush at first-sight. They were bickering with each other almost immediately and both have a way of getting under eachother's skin. Laydem hasn't admitted these feelings to Xenith, figuring the olive doesn't reciprocate.
