Iago Hughes is the Church of the Sleeping Gods' Rook, the immediate left hand to Her Eminence and overseer of The Left Hand, the Somnolae's militia and reconnaissance. He is most often referred to by his title instead of by name, but he is a popular face among the monastery and often helps out Her Eminence in a lot of day-to-day activities. Standing ever at her side, he sees all, and receives regular reports from those in the Holy Order as well as from his spies that keep him informed of everything without having to leave headquarters. Although he behaves himself properly and speaks softly, there is an icy tone to his voice that hints at his true nature.
Rook directly oversees Bryn's missions, and he tends to keep her busy, especially as of late. He also holds power over Caim, but hasn't yet needed to exert that control, as Caim performs excellently and in accordance with the will of the Eminent. Despite all of the power he holds, however, he always acts solely on Her Eminence's orders and never challenges her desires. He is often asked to cooperate with Bishop, and the two of them seem to hate each other at first glance, but he feels a certain fondness for her under the surface.

Rook is someone who is not ashamed of his background, despite the thought that everyone around him is. He was brought into this world as a high-born, and was blessed with the gift of time perception magic - a skill that allows him to register the world around him as if everything was slow motion at will, granting him more time to react or make decisions. Although this magic is incredibly useful, he always had little desire to succeed in classes and became something of a delinquent, which led to his family kicking him out on the streets so as not to be a disgrace any longer.
He was eventually picked up by Her Eminence herself, and her willingness to accept him as he was - as well as his long-standing fascination with the Sleeping Gods - made him warm up to the idea of becoming someone he actually wanted to be. He trained hard with the spear and taught himself everything he could, and now excels in most areas. Although she is far above him in power, Rook sees Her Eminence as a sort of mother figure and wishes to do anything he can to make her ideals come true.

- Rook tends to keep his magical ability a secret, as it "could mean the difference between victory and failure" one day. Most think he is overreacting somewhat, but he remains adamant.
- He still has some connections from his time on the streets, and they help extend his information network so he gets intel from every walk of life.
- He legitimately doesn't care what others think of him, and hardly feels like defending himself if verbally attacked or made fun of. He puts up with a lot of Bishop's jabs at him.
- Rook isn't the most physically strong person at the monastery, but his magic allows him to usually win most sparring matches, as his prediction and reflexes are unparalleled. He hopes to find a worthy challenge one day, but doesn't go out of his way.
