Personality

In some respects, Fenrir and Yuri have somewhat similar personalities. Having been raised in nobility and realizing what comes with it, Fenrir has developed a slight distaste for all things noble-related. It has gotten to the point that he often gets into arguments with Flynn over the nature of knights and how Fenrir personally believes they're not as good as they claim espesically with how much they cater to nobles. Regardless, Fenrir is a very sarcastic and cynical man that often looks at things from a pessimistic and realistic viewpoint. While he may be sarcastic in nature, he is a very empathetic to those of lower class or who are in need help. He’ll seem like he doesn’t care at all, only help in his own way in the end. The only thing that separates him from Yuri is the fact he doesn't simply look at the smaller problems and take in account of how it may end up affecting things later down the line.

Fenrir is comfortable being the way he is and doesn't care what others think of him. He has no problem saying how he feels since frankly he doesn't see the need to hide it. It's something that he admits is due to the fact that he used to do that as a kid, which led to him just going along with things he didn't like. This allows him to not be afraid of dealing with difficult matters as he is comfortable in taking them into his own hands as he hates the idea of endangering the people around him more than needed. When his mind is made up for something and it involves helping someone, he will not hesitate to help that person in any way he can. You will have to be stubborn when it comes to convincing him to back down. Despite all of this, Fenrir carries an almost big brother vibe to him with the way he enjoys teasing people and how he carries a soft spot towards those he sees as being similar to his son. Once you get to know him (and get close to him), he can honestly be the equivalent of a loyal guard dog. He will protect you at all cost even if he gets seriously hurt in the process.

Humanoid Form

Fenrir has short, black hair with white streaks within the fringes that frame both sides of his face. Coming down to the top of his shoulders, Fenrir hair is often shown to be unruly and messy. The black pupils of his eyes are slitted while the iris is primarily yellow. His sclera are shown to be black. He has an athletic build and is quite tall for a guy of his species. Covering a large portion of his arms and legs are reddish orange stripe-like markings that bear the resemblance to tiger stripes. In terms of his attire, the male wears a black shirt with white lining with a small diamond shaped opening at the top. This short top is shown to expose his midriffs and navel, revealing his muscles underneath. Over this tip is a darker gray (almost black) jacket with a white stripe of color at the bottom with various rips along the bottom, back and shoulders. Attached to the shoulders is a short cape with the same coloration as his jacket with the addition of a white symbol on the back of it. This symbol is that of a sphere (the world) with two diamonds (Stars) on its side and two crescent symbols (moons) directly above it with the topmost one being smaller than the one below it. Black pants with dark gray bands that resemble bandages on his calves. Completing the outfit are gray boots with black straps (and soles) and white fingerless gauntlets with three claw-like attachments in the front. Often seen dangling around his neck is a moon necklace that he received as a gift from his mother before he left his home continent.

Therian Form

Fenrir's Therian form transforms the male into a bipedal wolf that towers over his humanoid form at an impressive 7'2"/218.4 cm. His eyes remained the same as his humanoid form. The markings on his body become darker red and more jagged in terms of his appearance. The male is shown to have dark gray fur with a lighter gray underbelly, black nose and light gray eye dots just above his eyes. His body is bulkier in this form and has functioning paw-hands that are capable of grabbing onto things and doing things that normal hands are capable of doing. A large, fluffy tail flows behind him with a light gray tip, and his ears are a bit pointed in terms of appearance. Oddly enough, his clothes remain intact despite this transformation. His feral form takes his therian form and translates it more into the shape of an actual wolf with the only difference being the addition of a light gray mane in place of his underbelly, the presence of leg cuffs on his front legs and a golden cape making the only apparel he has.

Unleashed Form

Fenrir's Unleashed form takes Fenrir's Therian form and expands it on further. He now stands at the height of 9'3"/281.9 cm. This form is shown to make Fenrir larger and bulkier than both his therian and human form while taking more of a wolf-like structure. With a lighter gray underbelly, the male possesses a white, messy mane that starts on the back of his head and curls down the middle of his back. Similar turfs of fur can be found on the back of his arms and his hips. His ears are shown to be pointed and the red markings on his body seem to change to purple (with them taking a more tiger-like stripes and matching the colors of the rim of his ear). His claws are golden with the top half of the face being a dark gray with a light gray marking framing the top half of his eye rim. He still maintains parts of his Bestia form such as functioning paw-hands and a large fluffy tail with the tip of it being white.

Design Notes

  • Fenrir's clothes have various rips and tears in it due to the various fights he's been in. When he gets serious, he takes off his jacket.
  • Fenrir is rarely the type that likes to wear anything too bright since he doesn't find it all that appealing
  • Fenrir has sharpened canines that is only noticeable whenever he smiles.

Story

The Story of a Caged Prince

July 16 XXXX was a special day for the Rikras Kingdom. On that day, Adrian Blackwell and Cassandra Blackwell welcomed Dante Blackwell into their lives, making him the first child to be birthed under the royal family name. For the Kingdoms of Ferox, this was a important birth as the Blackwell family is one that is notorious for being a group that one simply don't fuck with. This was not a surprise, given the leaders of the family are composed of the toughest and strongest Bestias around with Cass being the previous commandant of the continent and Adrian being the strongest of the family. As such, this leads to opportunities of warming up to the family for a potential arranged marriage between their son and the children of the other kingdoms. It is something that Adrian and Cass knew about with Cass making it a point that they will not be forcing their son (or any of their kids) into an arranged marriage. It is something Adrian agreed too, mostly due to not wanting to upset Cass and his care about his son's well-being. With this, the two spent most of their time raising Dante to the best of their abilities. It was tricky, given their respective jobs. However, they did all they could to support him even when they would later have two additional children (Ashton and Isabelle). It was the nature of the Blackwell family. They stick together regardless of the circumstance. Something that would be challenged later down the line.

Being a prince wasn't something that Dante enjoyed. Unlike the other families, the Blackwell had standards that they had to meet, and Adrian was determined to make Dante aware of them. These standards became progressively imposed on him as he got older and older. He must be formal and proper to those he meets. He must act so and so way. He must not lower himself down to this standard of the "middle" and "lower" class. These standards came from Adrian's attempts at making the Blackwell family look as "perfect" as possible. It is something that Cass told her husband was unneeded, but Adrian never listened. It annoyed him, but Dante didn't fight against his father. It wasn't worth attempting to fight his father over, and he knew when to back off when he felt he was being a bit much.

Frankly, he was willing to deal with it when he had Cael by his side. Cael is Dante's best friend and has been by his side ever since he was three when his mother found Cael in her garden. Upon learning he was an orphan, Cass took him in and raised him as if he was her own. Cael would eventually become a knight and serve as a bodyguard for Dante. Cael was always there to guide Dante away from danger and is one of the few people that Dante often rambles to as Cael is one of the few people that truly understood Dante. He was always there to listen to him question what he wanted to do with life, and how he never felt like he was fitting to be king. He was always there when he just wanted someone to talk to. The two of them were two peas in the same pod. While they may often get into playful brawls, nothing will ever break up their friendship.

Perhaps that's why Dante told him of his plans of leaving the kingdom.

Let's fast forward to when Dante is 85 years old. In the middle of the night, Dante was summoned to the throne room, where his father sat on the throne alone. The conversation starts off casual (with their talk being what the two have been doing lately) before Adrian reveals that he has plans to arrange a marriage between Dante and Gael Irving. Dante was bewildered by this and retaliated that they (Adrian and Cass) told him they weren't going to force plans relating to any forms of arranged marriage. Adrian told Dante himself that he was going to have that choice of deciding who to marry. Adrian points out how he knows that Dante won't marry anyone since the person he will even consider wanting to marry would have to step down from his position. It was something that he knows that Dante wouldn't want the person to do since he wants him to achieve his dreams of being a high ranked knight. Adrian then shatters Dante's heart by revealing he is helping Dante get over his hopeless love for Cael and solving an issue that Dante is going to deal with whenever he becomes king.

The last thing that Dante remembers after that was him seeing blood and claws tearing into his skin.

When he snaps back in reality, he finds himself sitting on the bed with his mother tending to his wounds. His mother explains that he ended up lashing out at his father, and the two got into a fight that Cael broke up. Dante simply listens, quiet but angry. Cass explains that she doesn't want to do this. She never wanted this arranged marriage to occur because she knows how unfair it is. However, her back is against the wall, and the arrangement has been made under her nose. Again, Dante listens as his mother stands up after finishing treating his wounds and moves towards the door. As she leaves, she gives her son advice: "You have 3-6 days to decide what you want to do. If you wish to continue this servitude to the family, I expect you to see you in the throne room. If you wish to end it, I hope the starlights treat you well."

When she is gone, Dante realizes what he must do.

Six days later, the Irving family arrives. However, Dante is not in the throne room. It is something that Adrian was annoyed but not shocked by. Dante had been avoiding him since the incident. As such, he goes about searching for Dante with his servants. They never found Dante. They looked everywhere for the man, but they couldn't find him. That was very concerning for Adrian. It was when Adrian arrived at his bedroom that he found a letter. It was curious as he was sure it wasn't there earlier. As such, he grabs the letter to read it. Upon reading, he would become pale before screaming in frustration and rage. Cass and Cael knew what happened, having received similar letters the previous night. Both didn't mention this to Adrian, wanting to give Dante the chance to make his choice happen. So what did Dante do?

Dante has chosen to flee his kingdom and the continent of Ferox, leaving the Blackwell family without their eldest royal prince.

The Lone Wolf

Dante Blackwell no longer existed outside the Ferox continent. In his place is Fenrir Hróðvitnir, a simple man that wants to live a quiet life. He didn't want to deal with anything nobility related (or really anything pertaining to society itself). Perhaps it was just his bitterness and sorrow of everything that happened combined into his cynicism. Whatever the case was, he fled to the Yurzorea continent as it was largely uninhabited and far from the Ferox continent. For years, he spent his time building a small home, finding work in the form of occasionally working in the Yumanju Hot Springs and doing a bit of monster hunting for those he stumbled upon at the hot springs. It was a decent life for him since it was simple, and he didn't have to worry about dealing with the Guild and Imperial Knights going on. He would end up encountering Cael, who would give him updates about the happenings of the Ferox continent while sending his mother updates on how he was doing. The feelings that Fenrir had for Cael melted away into a simple friendship as his romantic feelings for Cael were too tied to the arranged marriage nonsense.

What Fenrir wasn't expecting was dealing with raising a baby a few years into his new life. The fact that the baby was a Bestia added to his confusion. He would learn from the familiar attached to the child that apparently the parents' of said child were killed by some Bestia. He ended up leaving the continent out of fear (and the desire to protect the little one) and ended up flying until they arrived here. The familiar pleaded for Fenrir to raise the kid as it was growing more dormant since he had fused with the familiar of the child and the child hadn't technically awakened him. Despite not wanting to raise a kid, he decided to at least raise him until Cael came to take him to an orphanage. Cael wouldn't come back for months. It was something that Fenrir continued to curse him out for as Fenrir ended up growing attached to the child and even gave him the name of Hati. By the time Cael arrived, Fenrir couldn't give Hati away and ended up adopting him as his own.

Many years would pass and the two would end up having a decent life together with Fenrir teaching Hati all he needed to know. They pay no mind to the shenanigans that were the events of Tales of Vesperia since frankly, Fenrir would prefer not to involve his 12 year old son (at the time) in something that was considered life-threatening. That and he refuses to put himself into the position of being a hero since that would attract the eye of other Bestia. As such, all of that was none of his business. If only that would continue four years after the events of Tales of Vesperia, where he finds himself in a position where he is forced to work together with the TOV gang to understand why Bestias are attacking Aurnion and why the other kingdoms aren't doing anything about it. No one told him that would lead to him going on some wacky ass adventure that would lead to some political drama, family drama, shenanigans and romance between a blond commandant and a snarky ass guild member.

Fighting style

When it comes to fighting, Fenrir'S raw strength is something that should be noted in regards to how he fights. The male fights entirely with his fists, providing more control and freedom to his own movements during battle, making him one of the Fighter class. This does mean that he has to get up close and personal when it comes to fighting. However, he doesn't seem to mind. He is shown to be tanky in terms of his defenses with his physical defense is slightly higher than his magical defense. This leads to him accepting his position as the shield of the group.

At the cost of his MP, the male is able to transform into his Therian Form. This form increased Fenrir's power, speed, and endurance, thus making Fenrir quite a worthy opponent to fight while in this form. His fighting style becomes more animal-like and harder to predict. Of course, there are some disadvantages of this form. He develops a bit of an alpha mentality the longer he stays in that form. Due to this, he can be downright aggressive towards his teammates and may even lash out if he's not kept on a tighter leash.

Strengths

  • Comes with high defense and decently high magical defense
  • Oen of the strongest physical attacker in the party
  • Is able to come up with quick plans on the fly
  • Has the great perks of a wolf

Weaknesses

  • Doesn't heavily rely on magic
  • Often deals with arguing with Fen over control of body
  • Loses control of himself if he gets overly emotional
  • Can often be a lone wolf
Wolf Bestia Physiology
racial skill

Difficulty
Mastery

All Bestia carry different abilities based on the creatures that they are based on. For all, their abilities are enhanced under a full moon to a certain degree and they carry the same ability mentioned about that allows them to go into their therian form. Looking at wolf bestias, they possess superhuman strength with some being able to toss aside a tree and being able to leap across a decent amount of ways in the air due to that strength extending towards their legs. Wolf bestias can move faster than a good chunk of non-supernatural creatures and have a high amount of stamina. Their agility, balance, and bodily coordination are enhanced to levels that are beyond the natural physical limits of even the finest human athlete with their bodies being physically tougher and more resistant to injury than the body of a normal human. Much like their canine counterparts, they do come with enhanced senses with most of them being centered around sight, smell and hearing.

Corpois Branch
racial skill

Difficulty
Mastery

Under the Corpois branch, Bestias are granted a form known as the “Unleashed” form. The Unleashed form is far more animalistic in appearance. In this form, Bestia become bulky creatures with incredibly powerful, albeit clumsy bodies. They are capable of feats of strength that border on the ridiculous, such as lifting an RV over their heads and tossing it for several dozen yards. Bestia tend to become feral while in this form to the point it’s no surprise to see them lose control of themselves. Most often, their anima (beast half of their soul) are the ones that take control of their bodies as the Bestia finds themselves running on primal instinct while in this form. Oftentimes, those with this form need extensive training in order to properly master it.

Blood Empowerment
inherited skill

Difficulty
Mastery

With how much blood that Fenrir tends to spill, it's no surprise that he has picked up on this specific skill. It certainly helps that this is a Blackwell technique. With it, Fenrir is able to grow stronger when he comes into contact with or gets near blood. All he needs to do to trigger that power is having the enemy make him bleed (or making use of the blood of the enemy itself) in some way during battle. His use of the art lead to him coming up with several blood-based artes that take advantage of it. Obviously, he has to be careful of not using too much blood to the point that he faints.

Inventory

Gauntlets [Main Weapon]

Being entirely a melee attacker, it's no surprise that Fenrir's weapon of choice are gauntlets. Almost all of his gauntlets are meant to enhanced his strength and often themed based on various animal species. Outside of his Fell Arm [Inugami/Armor of Spirit: Inugami], Fenrir final gauntlets end up being Twilight Starbreaker. This weapon is one given to him by his father.

Greaves [Sub Weapon]

To compliment his melee based fighting style, Fenrir keeps greaves as his sub weapon. These greaves often raise his strength alongside his physical defenses. The greaves names are often themed after lizards. Fenrir final greaves end up being Dragon Scales. This weapon ends up being found within the final area of the Lunar's Gaze fic.

Prince's Cape

If you're going to be a resident video game protagonist, you need the equipment neccesary to survive. This take the form of various mails, guards, charms and what not. In the case of Fenrir, it takes the form of a cape. Fenrir is often seen wearing Prince's Cape. This item raises both Fenrir's physical and magical defenses. This item was given to him by his mother in Act 2.

Moon Necklace

When Fenrir left Ferox, he only had the clothes on his back and a couple of smaller things he cherished with him. Of those small things was a moon necklace. This moon necklace was given to Fenrir by both of his parents at a younger age. Most of the time, he keeps it within his pocket for safekeeping. You will most commonly seen him staring at him in the quiet moments.

Trivia

General

  • Fenrir is named after the Fenrir from Norse mythology. In fact, Fenrir's original concept was based off that.
  • Out of the main cast in TOV: Lunar's Gaze, he is one of the oldest member of the party.
  • The inspiration for Fenrir's species was Leymon from Tales of the Tempest.

Combat

  • Working out Fenrir's artes was painful. It took me a week to figure it out what artes he should have.
  • I took inspiration from Jude from Xillia, Regal from Symphonia and Caius from Tempest.
  • The fierce, wild battle style he has is also based off Asura from Asura's Wrath.

Social

  • Some of Fenrir's behavior is based on the mannerism of canines.
  • Due to his mother's species, I incoporated tiger mannerisms into his character.
  • There is a lot of symbolism going on with Fenrir's false name and true name.

Design

  • I recently change his design with the help of Clow to give him a Tales of-esque design.
  • The use of gold for a few of his outfits is meant to signal his link to royalty.
  • Fun fact, Fenrir's "modern counterpart" is Adrian Kuzuryu.

[For this part, Fenrir will be called Dante] Fen and Dante have quite the tumultuous relationship. There was a time that Dante viewed Fen as being akin to that of a animal that doesn't understand that there are things that you simply don't do, and Fen viewed him as being a annoying mutt that kept getting in the way of his chance to protect from whatever nonsense they are dealing with. However, over time, they grew to respect each other and accept the other as a brother/sibling. They came to a understanding there is a reason why the other reacted the way they do and learned to respect that.

When Hati appeared on Fenrir's doorstep, he didn't care to keep him. He was a cute kid, but Fenrir didn't feel he could be a good father to him. Thankfully, he was proven wrong. Fenrir loves Hati with all his heart and will protect the boy at all costs. He's one of the few people that can make him slip into his dad mode whenever he's around him. In fact, he's one of the first people he checks on whenever a battle ends as he can often be a bit of a worrywart. He refuses to mention what happens to Hati's biological parents to the boy as he fears how it would affect him.

Yuri and Fenrir get along way too well. It's to the point that they always seem to know what the other is thinking at any given moment. This allows them to be able to communicate each other in such a manner that they can respectful and understanding of the other's thoughts. Yuri was the one that Fenrir didn't have a hard time addmitting he fell in love with with how similar they are. When the two are not cracking snarky jokes or causing problems on purpose, the two are often battling each other while occasionally flirting with each other.

You know the phrase "opposites attract"? Yeah, that very much applies here. It took Fenrir a while to admit his feelings for Flynn since Flynn reminded him of Cael. Given the nature of why Fenrir left and how awkward that was, you can imagine why Fenrir wanted to avoid going down that rabbit hole. He often enjoys teasing Flynn by sliding in the occasional lewd jokes or causing crimes on purpose. However, he does find himself leaning onto Flynn for support whenever he finds himself questioning whatever decision he makes as despite everything Flynn can be levelheaded.

Cael and Fenrir relationship can be best described as being akin to Flynn's and Yuri's relationship. They fight like a married couple and are on two separate ends of the spectrum to the point one has to wonder how they even became friends. However, their friendship is something few are able to break. This is no surprise given the amount of shit they went through and how they immediately attached themselves to the other the very moment they saw each other. If it wasn't for the incident with Fenrir and his father, the two would have probably ended up in a relationship.

There was a time that Fenrir showed a level of distrust for Estelle. In his defense, this was due to Bestia's association that those with connection with the Children of the Full Moon weren't good, given what their ancestor caused. There was also the fact that Estelle royal ties reminded him of his own. However, over time, he grew to trust the young lady and gain a level of respect for her. This can be seen by how quickly he defends her from other Bestia by reminding her that she shouldn't be blamed for the sins of her ancestor and how their kind needs to learn to let go of the pain of the past.

Fenrir holds no fear or worry about Rita. He should (given the fact he easily finds ways to tick her off), but he doesn't. He isn't all that bothered by her temper and develops a habit of holding her during her fits as a means to calm her down. It's not as if she can seriously harm him, given what he is. The relationship between the two can best described as being akin to siblings. The two bicker about the little things but eventually move on. Fenrir is a dog lover, and it shows well whenever he's alone with Repede. Whenever he's with the canine during the calmer periods, he spends his time chasing after the dog and playing around with him while taking on his therian/feral form. It's one of the few times you see the puppy-like nature of Fenrir come out in full force. It can often be unexpecting, given how serious and deadpan he tends to look/act. Fenrir can't explain why he tends to act like this when he's around Repede. He assumes that it's just the presence of a new energetic dog unlock that inner puppy in him.

As such, Fenrir is required by dad law to tease Karol and Hati for potentially having feelings for each other and treat Karol with a higher level of respect. He doesn't really go out of his way to push the two to admit their feelings for each other. In his opinion, he personally thinks that's something you shouldn't doing. When Fenrir and Judith talk, it is often over something pertaining to Spirits as the two carry a fondness over talking about them. Other than Hati and those back home, Fenrir doesn't really have anyone who carries the perspective he has for Spirits, making Judith a bit of a relief for him. The party often grumbles about Judith and Fenrir being as mysterious as ever when they're together. Raven is one of the few people that Fenrir feels truly understands what it means to toss aside an identity as a means to find your path (and the deep hatred of being old). While Fenrir may joke about acting older than him, Fenrir does trust Raven and has no problem rambling about his thoughts to him about questioning if he made a good choice in life. It's easier for Fenrir to feel more vulnerable about Raven than most of the other members of the party (except Yuri and Flynn). However, it does annoy the hell out of Fenrir that Raven takes so long to admit his feelings to Tomo.
