Ascent of the Archmage
🔸🏰🔸
This event has ended.

Miriam is the new leader of the Order.
view the final tally here.
 7/4/21 - 8/15/21

Following the public and disastrous demise of Hagia, the Order at Namarast is headless and scrambling for leadership. It is up to the king to appoint Hagia's successor, but there is pressure from the citizens of Ivras to choose the candidate who will cause the least unrest.

During Ascent of the Archmage, you and your characters will sway the king, and raise an Archmage candidate above the others to become the new leader of the Order! The Archmage you choose will determine the behavior of the Order and the laws regarding mages for the next chapters of Anathema's collaborative story.

Read on to meet the three candidates, and learn how you can sway the king of Ivras to selecting your Archmage of choice! (Each candidate's profile has a little extra info, for the curious!)

she/her | 50 years | Order Mage

Storied monster hunter from the Sicklefang Clan, and advocate for peace between the Order and the Clans.

Proposes that the Order is overdue for reform, and should no longer be a "one size fits all" solution for mage education.

If appointed as the new Archmage, Guro would:
- Relax restrictions on mages and magic
- Relax restrictions on magic education outside the Order
- Incentivize Wild and Hidden mages to hunt monsters
- Attempt to make all Order mages into monster hunters

Strengths:
Skilled battle mage with lots of monster killing experience.
Popular among Wild Clans.

Weaknesses:
Feared by the non-mage populace as an extremist.
Has few friends within the Order because of her outspoken criticism of Order leadership in the past.
Places more emphasis on monster hunting than monster prevention.

Approval: LOW

they/he | 30 years | Order Mage

Husband of the King, protégé of the former Archmage Hagia, darling of the Order and the most famous mage in Ivras.

Proposes that the Order is more necessary than ever, and is the kingdom's best hope in stopping monsters for good.

If appointed as the new Archmage, Sabora would:
- Continue the policies of Archmage Hagia
- Focus on battling the source of Corruption
- Maintain the current restrictions on magic education
- Give the Crown more control over the Order

Strengths:
Trusted and admired by Faline's political and social elite.
Popular among the existing hierarchy of the Order.

Weaknesses:
Associated closely with Hagia's tarnished legacy.
Tends to waffle on policy and opinions.
Could potentially destroy the remaining separation between the Order and the Crown.

Approval: MIXED

36806630_gdHWl6lBjxgnu2T.pngWitchfinder Miriam

she/her | 52 years | Non-Mage

A university administrator turned community leader when her school and family were destroyed by a monster attack.

Proposes that the Order has been self-governed for too long, and that mages cannot be trusted to control mages.

If appointed as the new Archmage, Miriam would:
- Place more legal restrictions on magic
- Use the Order to contain Mages rather than educate them
- Stand against the Crown's liberal views on Mages
- Seek imprisonment of Hidden Mages

Strengths:
Political, administrative, and disaster relief experience.
Popular among non-mages and scholars.

Weaknesses:
Knows very little about magic.
Has no support within the existing hierarchy of the Order.
Intends to use the Order to contain mages rather than teach them.

🔸🏰🔸 Mage Story Prompt 1:

While in town, your character notices a subtle commotion on the street. Nearby, they see a Witchfinder stopping a pedestrian, claiming them to be a Hidden Mage. 🔸🏰🔸 Mage Story Prompt 2:  Your Mage Intervenes.

The Witchfinder sees your character approach and reacts almost before your mage can speak, certainly before the Witchfinder can really understand what your character has to say. Rather than address your character directly, the Witchfinder makes an appeal to the growing crowd of spectators: another Mage?  Your character is suddenly surrounded by terrified faces. Come to protect one of their own?

The crowd is growing restless; there's shouting all around. The Witchfinder wastes no time in demanding your character's Order documents as well. Failure to produce those documents, they say, will leave the townspeople no choice but to make two arrests today.

What does your character do?

  1. This is about to get bloody. Your mage produces the requested documents or tries to de-escalate the situation nonviolently; the accused Hidden Mage will have to fend for themself. Click here for the next prompt.

  2. This is about to get bloody; your mage makes sure of it. Using their magic, your mage decides to fight their way out of the situation, anything to ensure their freedom. Click here for the next prompt.

🔸🏰🔸 Mage Story Prompt 3:  Your Mage makes peace.

The Witchfinder's scrutiny is insistent, but is eventually quelled by your mage's documentation and negotiating. However, not everyone in convinced. Despite your mage's efforts to exit the situation calmly, the agitation of the crowd does not immediately dissipate. Your character's attempts to exit the conversation are met with curses and derision from the townspeople, who spit and sneer as your character leaves the scene.

The supposed hidden mage offers little resistance as they are dragged away by city guards. They watch your mage with an unreadable expression until they are out of sight.

What does your character do?

  • Show us how your mage exits the situation. Do they escape unscathed? How do they avoid arrest?

This space will be updated with a stat point reward and Candidate Support/Sabotage at the end of the event.

Your mage receives + 1 Discipline. Your prompt responses supported Sabora.

🔸🏰🔸 Mage Story Prompt 3:  Your Mage chooses violence.

As the Witchfinder's interrogation intensifies, your mage decides to escalate the situation on their terms. Unleashing their magic, they attack the Witchfinder and send the crowd into a terrified frenzy. The Witchfinder watches from a heap on the ground as the panicked townspeople disperse; the street empties as the villagers flee the magic, but some nervous guards remain to attempt to apprehend your character. They are inexperienced, frightened, and could be easily disposed of, if your character chooses.

There is fear on the accused hidden mage's face as they watch your character act, but they use the opportunity to flee. They don't look back to learn your character's fate.

What does your character do?

  • Show us what happens next. What magic does your character use? What damage is done? Is anyone killed? Does your character escape, or are they arrested?

This space will be updated with a stat point reward and Candidate Support/Sabotage at the end of the event.

Your mage receives + 1 Corruption. Your prompt responses supported Miriam.

🔸🏰🔸 Mage Story Prompt 2:  Your Mage tries to flee.

As a crowd gathers around the Witchfinder's in-progress arrest, your mage's movement away from the scene draws attention. Who's that? the Witchfinder, wild-eyed, demands. Another hidden witch!  The cry goes out to stop your character, but most people seem too scared to get in a mage's way. There's still a chance to escape.

A pair of city guards, moved to high alert by the WItchfinder's cries, begin to give chase.

What does your character do?

  1.  Hide! There's too many ways for this to go wrong; if they can wait out the hysteria caused by the Witchfinder, maybe no one has to get hurt. Click here for the next prompt.

  2. If there was ever a time for magic, it's now; using their magical gifts, your character creates a diversion to keep the guards distracted as they flee. Click here for the next prompt.

🔸🏰🔸 Mage Story Prompt 3:  Your Mage tries to hide.

Your mage's disappearance doesn't go unnoticed. The Witchfinder cries deception, and insists a search be conducted; the marketplace is scoured by guards and townsfolk alike, who grow only more agitated as the search goes on. Your mage knows their pursuers will be violent if they discover your character's hiding place; whether they stay or flee, they must remain stealthy and silent. The Witchfinder doesn't relent until darkness comes to conceal your mage's escape.

From their hiding place, your character hears the accused hidden mage cry out as they are dragged away. Their pleas for help fall on deaf ears.

What does your character do?

  • Show us what your mage does next; do they remain in their hiding place until nightfall, or try to leave sooner? Do they successfully evade the Witchfinder's search, or are they arrested? Where do they go next?

This space will be updated with a stat point reward and Candidate Support/Sabotage at the end of the event.

Your mage receives - 1 Cost. Your prompt responses supported Miriam.

🔸🏰🔸 Mage Story Prompt 3:  Your Mage creates a diversion.

With a burst of magic, your mage creates chaos that will cover their escape. As predicted, the crowd explodes with fear, fleeing the magic and your character in wild-eyed panic, disrupting the street but allowing for your character's escape. Some nervous guards break out of the bedlam to pursue your escaping mage, and others circle back to the Witchfinder to control the situation.

As your character escapes, they see the townsfolk and the Witchfinder turn their rage and fear on the accused hidden mage. The hidden mage disappears under the blows of weapons and hooves, and your character leaves the situation unsure of their fate.

What does your character do?

  • Show us what your mage does next; do the fleeing guards catch up with them? If not, how does your character evade them? Do they escape, or are they arrested? Where do they go next?

This space will be updated with a stat point reward and Candidate Support/Sabotage at the end of the event.
