are you happy with your artstyle?

just a general question.

was thinking of my own artstyle, and how its very 'cutesy'. (examples in spoiler) i do like my style, i think its cute. the problem arises with that,,,, its never how i imagined my style would end up. you see, ive always admired 'gross-out' styles. lumpy, unappealing to a wide audience, kind of just fucked up looking. i feel conflicted about my art style, because while i like it as A style, its not what i really want for my style. i have fun drawing, i like it visually, but part of me wishes that i hadnt ended up drawing this way. i could start to change my art style, i could practice, but i just dont have the free time to do that anymore. i love to draw monsters, creepy, unnerving things, and thats hard when my style lends itself to cute chibi fluffy things. its not that big of a deal, but i wanted to know how others feel about their own art style. are you happy with it? has your style had any dramatic shifts? do you have any alternate styles?

Yeah I am pretty happy with my art style, it exactly how I wanted too. ^ ^ Cartoony style or cartoony some what realistic. I didn't had a style when I was super young, but over time I discovered what I really like doing and learn what I am able to do in style. :3 I manage to reach to that point on what I was aiming for.

Okie

I have definitely noticed that I have had a slight shift over the past few years. My primary medium is photo manipulation but I have been leaning a lot into digital painting because I wanted to better my human anatomy. My biggest personal issue -- which I think many artists may be able to relate with -- is that I am REALLY self-critical with myself. I also struggle with comparing myself with my artist friends which is REALLY bad because everyone DOES in fact have their own unique style that sets themselves apart I think. That being said, I think I am struggling with whether or not I actually am satisfied with my style or not. Over the past year and a half I have struggled to enjoy drawing/making art/designing personal projects too finding it to be more of a chore rather than something of enjoyment which kind of makes me sad because I do have such a strong passion for art and I don't really know how to get out of that rut.

I don't know if any of that makes sense to anyone -- and I'm also kind of rambling ^^'

I like my style right now, although I get really sad when people go on about how simple it is. It's always used in contrast to a good perk about my art, so it keeps seeming like a negative comment, and it genuinely makes me sad when people say it. Which... I know it's simple... but I don't know, man. I would like to improve in my own ways, but motivation has been incredibly hard lately and I feel awful for it.

we never really had expectations going into art.

obviously, there was, "gee, hope we grow into a skilled artist"! but never, "better be cute/edgy/complex/etc"... just, what happens happens. that being said, we are most definitely not happy with our art style! but art is all about growing, and we are glad we've made progress over time, and enjoy making art, so we will continue to do so!

if anything, we do however wish we had the patience to spend more than an hour, hour and a half on a single piece... most of the time we draw something in like 10 minutes and are like, ugh, so done. don't feel like putting in any more effort x,0

For now, yeah :D though maybe in the future I do wanna make my artstyle kinda cute but at the same time grotesque if that makes sense?

For a while I was, but recently I haven't been so sure? My art style has kinda been all over the place as of recent, especially with me trying to use Procreate more. The art I do in Procreate and the art I still do in IbisPaint X tend to look wildly different and now my way of shading in Procreate has sorta split in two. Here's some art examples:

The art I usually do in IbisPaint X:

Vs the art I've been making in Procreate:

Shading style 2:

This one is a completely different shading style as well, but I don't think I was the biggest fan of it:

Anyway, I feel like the style I've pretty much always have wanted to get into was a sort of classic western animation style. Probably like Disney or Don Bluth. Yeah, it's kinda basic but I've never really cared about having a unique style for some reason? Like every time people have told me "wow your art style is so unique!" I've felt really neutral about it. I guess it's mostly cause I've never really wanted to stand out a whole lot. I've always just wanted to make things I like, tbh, and I've always absolutely loved the style of classic 2d western animation. All those movies have a lot of charm that really resonate with the art style for me.

Maybe at some point I'll find tutorials somewhere to replicate that. For now, though, I'm just casually experimenting. I suppose that's a good thing to do.

I love my style right now but I always feel the need for improvement, especially with more advanced shading and coloring styles. But I like how cute and pretty it is, and I hope it gets even better!

I’m very happy with my current art style, actually! Admittedly it took me a really long time to gain self-confidence about my artwork, and tweak it till I was totally happy with it. And I know that my style doesn’t appeal to everyone, but it’s a lot of fun for me to draw and I like the results, so that’s all that really matters, right?? I’d probably have a difficult time getting commissions, but my livelihood doesn’t depend on my art so it’s fine

Digitalpinkie

I think I'm a little satisfied :) I love cartoons and I really wanted the sort of chibi-ish cartoony style I have now. I hope it stays for a long time. My artstyle always changes and I really don't have control of it, someday I hope to settle down with this style for good, not that I don't want to lose being able to change styles at any time, I just want a style I can always feel comfortable coming back to after experimenting.

Examples (I haven't had it for very long):

I definitely recommend doing some realism, especially if you're not content with just one style! In my opinion, it allows you to kinda switch up/do alternate styles a lot more easily, since it allows you to have a good base in general human (or otherwise) anatomy and shapes and apply those principles to less realistic styles

ayuyu
