are you happy with your artstyle?

just a general question.

was thinking of my own artstyle, and how its very 'cutesy'. (examples in spoiler) i do like my style, i think its cute. the problem arises with that,,,, its never how i imagined my style would end up. you see, ive always admired 'gross-out' styles. lumpy, unappealing to a wide audience, kind of just fucked up looking. i feel conflicted about my art style, because while i like it as A style, its not what i really want for my style. i have fun drawing, i like it visually, but part of me wishes that i hadnt ended up drawing this way. i could start to change my art style, i could practice, but i just dont have the free time to do that anymore. i love to draw monsters, creepy, unnerving things, and thats hard when my style lends itself to cute chibi fluffy things. its not that big of a deal, but i wanted to know how others feel about their own art style. are you happy with it? has your style had any dramatic shifts? do you have any alternate styles?

I feel like it's pretty common for there to be at least some disparity between the art you wish you produced, but otherwise consume...and then the stuff you draw. Everybody has their own style, and it's something that develops over time through all kinds of influences. While you can practice certain aspects of ABC you still might wind up with XYZ instead, but the inspiration will be there. Idk if I'm explaining it terribly or not, but it's like a Frankenstein of all your influences? Unless you are deliberately trying to match certain aspects 1:1, you'll end up with something else over time. There's nothing wrong with this, just as there's nothing wrong with wishing you could master another style. A hard shift is something that very much takes awareness and practice.

I once saw someone describe art styles as less just "how you draw" and more "how you interpret and translate information on a canvas," and I thought it was an interesting comparison. Changes perspective a bit.

That being said! I've definitely gone through super hard style shifts, aha. My art when I first started out and into a few years would probably be unrecognizable as mine if you compared them side by side. I used to be inspired by a certain brand of horror art. And then moved on to anime. And then moved on to video games.... developed a love of thick line work and so on. It's only been in recent months that I've finally felt satisfied with my style, and I really love it and the direction I wanna go. I do have an alt style.... I guess? But I'd consider it more jokey SHKFRGBDGF. Occasionally I'll make different stylistic choices on certain characters, but I wouldn't really call that a different style, as the core foundation of everything is still there.

I've struggled a lot with my style too. It always changes really drastically depending on my mood or what artist/media is currently interesting me and I've really hated it. I've always been jealous of people who have had the same style throughout the years and can consistently produce results, while I can never draw the same style twice. It's always been a big fear of mine people will see my gallery and assume I stole or traced over art due to the inconsistency. I do think that sometimes my style is too simple and I need to make more complex shading and detail, but can never make it look good.

Although more recently I do feel like I've gotten just a bit better finding a concrete style, it's still a worry in the back of my head I'll end up not being satisfied and change it again. But I like to think of it as never being satisfied is a good thing since it always pushes me to try new things and keep improved, so it's not all bad! It's pretty typical that all artists will always be overly critical of their work. I've sort of started to accept my style changes a lot and that it's not a bad thing.

I like my art style. I just let my art style do whatever and watch it evolve tbh. I do get inspired by other ppl but it only affects my art like, a little bit. I'm not very good at poses (trying to fix that).

I kinda dislike how flat and stiff my art is, but that's more of a technical thing than a style thing. I'm pretty satisfied with the style itself but I want to exaggerate the shapes more or use better proportions

Nifffi

No ;_; I have fun drawing but I don't think my style is good. I always wanted to have a simple, cute and edgy(?) style focused on shapes and colors, but I'm too much of a coward to push stylization enough. I think my current style is too basic to be impressive on a technical level, but too realistic and 'normal' to be appealing on stylism instead.

roziist

honestly im really starting to hate it. its been a while since ive had a drastic style change but i do change/add tidbits occasionally and while i LIKED what i was adding it wasnt fitting the style all together. my lack of anatomy knowledge has also always affected my stuff too and while its more technical stuff it still makes my style look wonky. i cant rlly explain it well like everyone else in this thread but yea i think my art style is kinda ugly and boring to me :[ ive started tryjng to learn/relearn stuff though so hopefully it helps in the long run

if u count chibi as an alt style then yes i did lol. it was around 2018-2019 and i used it occasionally but i dropped it sometime after

oh and what lemonylulu said abt having a style u want vs what u get is so true for the longest time ive wanted something like this (theyre a lovely artist btw go follow them) but instead i get... animeish. which isnt bad at all i just have never clicked with anime styles at all myself which is very ironic haha 🤡

QShiina

no... i mean, there's so many art styles i like and i just idk, i dont even know if i have an art style at this point lol

i never stay with just 1 art style, i wish i could i adapt to a more simple art style because i am a simple and impatient person... but i always feel an urge to try out many other art style, i rlly want to be good enough to do those beautifully fully rendered semi realism one day lol

koen

i mean, i don’t hate mine

i feel like my feelings change when it comes to my traditional art vs my digital art. (recent) digital stuff feels forced and stiff while my traditional stuff is “fun” (?)

for my style is general, i do kinda wish i had a more ‘sloppy’ one; one that just looks raggy and beat up if that makes sense lol

but again, i’m not super upset at where i am right now

Y3NNA

Hmm, while I do like the way the style I have looks right now, I'm not too happy with it still.

I'm mainly always doing bust-ups which has made my fullbodies and halfbodies always look wonky and it just always makes everything look off.

It's like taking someone's head and shoulders and adding them on top of a stickman's legs if that makes sense?

I'm working on fixing it though!

Eco

it’s not the direction i was going for. at all. same problem as you as i like it as a style but not really what i want for my style. i’ve always wanted to have those styles similar to twisted doctor and/or shenanigansens especially. just something simple that focuses on shapes rather than whatever tf i have rn.

do i hate my current style? no.

do i like it? also no
