Artist pet peeves master thread

Posted 4 years, 2 months ago (Edited 3 years, 3 months ago) by Petalofdreams

Hello friends!

I thought it'd be fun to create a thread so people can share stories  of their artist pet peeves. What do you hate about the community? what  do you hate about some people in the community? Is there something you absolutely hate but was never really able to say it out loud? Your chance is now!

Personally i really dislike it when people gatekeep stuff. Art is for  everyone and should be for everyone. If you want to draw something then  go for it unless it's outright hateful.  You don't have to have amazing  skills to do art. You don't have to be a certain way. You're an artist  alright? alright.

2021 edit: Thank you all for being respectful of each other! Its great seeing the differentiation of opinions and have an open minded discussion about it. Thats what i wanted. So thank you!

On the anthro and furry thing I strongly agree. All are the same. Which is especially bothering when people commission you but their character is just canine. Like is it a dog, what dog, is it a hyena,  a wolf? I think the main issue is the one who did the ref of the character. Everyone (most likely) will use this piece and style/body features to draw the character. Because yknow the character should look accurate.  That's at least how I feel. And it happened already that I wanted to draw a character more species accurate but I was told to change it so in the end it just looked like 'canine xy' again.

And adding to that furry characters with the same color schemes. Idk why but for some reason it seems like everyone is colorpicking each other so every second furry oc looks almost like the others. Mainly the pink, white, black , or soft brown palettes. Barely variation or outstanding design choices. While I enjoy furry characters this kinda makes it boring to me. They're all pretty, soft , whatever but 0% creative. I especially noticed this when visiting the popular feed for 3 seconds. All the characters I see there have the same colors over and over. But when you go a bit down, page 5+ you do get more interesting designs. Idk why the repetitive colors are that hyped but yea popular artist blabla. Eh.. not that they aren't good but I wouldn't be interested in a copy paste thing. It feels like one at least.

Art trends getting huge & making it difficult to find supplies

This problem got worse last year bc of you-know-what, like come on people. You don't need 200 paints and sketchbooks. They're not essential, you're just making it harder for students & people who do art as a job to get things. (seriously, getting paints last year was a nightmare)

(this isn't geared towards people who just want to get started in art hobbies. It's geared towards people who buy/hoard huge amounts of supplies to the point no one can get it)

I don't understand why people crop their figures like on the left. 90% of the time composition looks better when the subject is allowed to touch and visually extend past the margins. Obviously if the piece is meant to have some sort of decorative framing, or if the cropping has an interesting shape plays into the composition in some way then that's different, but if it's just the body cut by a blunt horizontal line the I don't see the point of doing this? It's especially odd when the crop is on a limb because sometimes it reads like the character is an amputee when that's not the case.

^ Oh yeah if it's a transparent image then that works better. It just bothers me when the bg is a solid color or some kind of pattern.

I hate drawing clothes, especially complicated clothes. I kind of wish I could draw people naked all the time and have it not be innappropriate lol

when people say anime styles all look the same. I get what they mean (that popular/trending anime art tends to look similar). but anime style can look like beserk or lucky star (excuse the ancient references lol). I know from the outside it may seem that way, but trust me there is a huge range of influences and variation!

my current art setup lol is a pet peeve lol. i need a more comfortable chair.

when you post art on instagram and in .4 seconds you get a spam comment telling you it looks amazing and to follow + promote your art on their account -_- leave me aloneeee. makes it so hard to know if compliments are genuine

self pet peeve but lately i've been getting really frustrated when editing art of people with darker skin tones. like I don't want their tone to be washed out or to be significantly lighter, i want that depth but it just happens when i'm doing color curves like i always do. i keep trying to fix it and then it gets worse and then all the colors in the pic get all screwed up and the person still ends up lighter than i wanted which upsets me. i'm going to figure this out because i feel like a failure rn

also went to the art store today and the cost of art materials is a huge pet peeve lol

^^^^Agreed.

As a black person, it really hurts when I can't color dark skin properly. With light skin, I 100% know how to get what I want. Really pale, with pink/red shadows.

Dark skin? I have ZERO idea how to give it that pink aesthetic. Our skin is beautiful, and I really want to keep drawing dark characters. But I can't because I'm very rarely happy with it.

PET PEEVE:

When people apologize/feel guilty over being inactive (the same applies if you post too much).

You don't need to justify anything. It's your life. If people care that you're inactive, that's their problem, and they don't care for your well-being.

Nobody is entitled to your art. You're (hopefully) posting for yourself.

I dunno. It just feels kinda like they're a slave in some weird way.

SwampGoblin oh thanks! I was going to look up some resources or maybe tutorials if that exists so anything helps
