Artist pet peeves master thread

Posted 4 years, 2 months ago (Edited 3 years, 3 months ago) by Petalofdreams

Hello friends!

I thought it'd be fun to create a thread so people can share stories  of their artist pet peeves. What do you hate about the community? what  do you hate about some people in the community? Is there something you absolutely hate but was never really able to say it out loud? Your chance is now!

Personally i really dislike it when people gatekeep stuff. Art is for  everyone and should be for everyone. If you want to draw something then  go for it unless it's outright hateful.  You don't have to have amazing  skills to do art. You don't have to be a certain way. You're an artist  alright? alright.

2021 edit: Thank you all for being respectful of each other! Its great seeing the differentiation of opinions and have an open minded discussion about it. Thats what i wanted. So thank you!

those "women small and round men large and square" anatomy tutorials and their ilk. not only is it dumb bc those are very narrow and unrealistic boxes for people, but its also stupid cuz you're not even learning properly. its like a weird game of telephone where you learn anatomy from someone else's stylization by copying their interpretation instead of by actually understanding how the body works. very surface level knowledge

I get it, algorithms can be a mess to figure out + visibility's hard to get but it's annoying as hell when people go into your comments sections just to advertise or ask for follows. Not only is it rude, but it's only gonna offput me from wanting to follow them (I'm only follow if I like their stuff, not because they begged). Plus there's tons of other ways to self-promo if that's what they're going for, like using artshare threads (there's plenty on twitter & forums), participating in hashtags, joining groups (if the site has them), Retweeting/rebloging/bumping their art .

All of these don't require going onto someone's page or art and posting "hey I'm an artist please check out my profile and follow"

idk I'm just getting sick of these comments on DA

This is a pet peeve of mine that is very specific to toyhouse, but I tend to draw other peoples characters more than my own (I just have no inspiration lmao). and when I go to look at the character reference they have a HUGE watermark over the whole image, to the point it basically covers up the whole character and I can hardly see it. It makes it impossible to get the color palettes I need and even harder to see smaller details in the characters.

Like don’t get me wrong watermarks are important and I respect them but pls stop putting massive watermarks that cover up the whole image on reference pages, it makes it very hard to do requests/commissions

Four ears is a sin.

  • Beginner artists who wont' stop putting themselves down, and want everyone to know 'that they'll never get better and the world sucks'.
  • People talking about 'high quality art' like it means something objective. YES, there is a degree of experience that you can observe, but just because you don't like the style doesn't make it low-quality.
  • Commission options that are literally blank character bodies drawn over with the only variation being hair/clothing/sometimes different poses.
  • PEOPLE ASKING YOU TO DO ART STYLES FOR COMMISSIONS THAT AREN'T REFLECTED IN YOUR PORTFOLIO[!!!!]
  • Likewise, PEOPLE ASKING YOU TO DO SUBJECT-MATTER FOR COMMISSIONS THAT AREN'T REFLECTED IN YOUR PORTFOLIO[!!!!]
  • People who obviously trace photographs instead of trying to draw the figure themselves.
  • Social media algorithms 🔥
  • Elitists...please remove them from this planet!
  • People who use a million colors in their art, or a million details...this is how the viewer gets overwhelmed and/or lost.
  • "Anime is the only thing I know how to draw" as an excuse not to learn basic real-world anatomy.
  • People not reading your ToS and doing whatever the hell they want with your art upon reception. :|

Fuck noses.

The fact that people always go for better-known artists when I personally don't see how good some of them are.

How people talk casually about complex tools in art programs and it makes me incredibly worried that I'm not a good artist because I don't know everything about Krita.

Humanoid original species. Just... no.... they make me feel all weird inside. (this is just my personal opinion, no need to get defensive if the only thing you live for is humanoid original species)

Oh the pain of not being good at the type of art you like to see.

Color picking

I don’t know why this bothers me so much but when someone says ‘don’t color pick my characters or youll be blocked’ I’m just like-

w h y

you don’t hold claim over the color and to be honest if it’s just one color it shouldn’t but much of an issue. If it’s the entire pallette, understandable! But if it’s one or two, where’s the issue? Unless the character is legit a solid color with markings of one color, I don’t see the issue with color picking. Let’s say that person A has a black and white cat and someone else makes a black and white cat character too. Person A gets pissed with person B for color picking and copying their design when it’s legit a black and white fucking cat.
