Artist pet peeves master thread

Posted 4 years, 2 months ago (Edited 3 years, 3 months ago) by Petalofdreams

Hello friends!

I thought it'd be fun to create a thread so people can share stories  of their artist pet peeves. What do you hate about the community? what  do you hate about some people in the community? Is there something you absolutely hate but was never really able to say it out loud? Your chance is now!

Personally i really dislike it when people gatekeep stuff. Art is for  everyone and should be for everyone. If you want to draw something then  go for it unless it's outright hateful.  You don't have to have amazing  skills to do art. You don't have to be a certain way. You're an artist  alright? alright.

2021 edit: Thank you all for being respectful of each other! Its great seeing the differentiation of opinions and have an open minded discussion about it. Thats what i wanted. So thank you!

Oop I put a lot. I'm not an angry person I swear

100% agree with the strange classification of "anime" art style cuz it makes no sense. Like, if you want something that looks like a specific way say you want something that looks like this & that. Don't just be like anime style anime isn't even a style its just lazy Japanese for animation, yes I looked it up. ppl who're like "I don't want anime style art" like, WHAT exactly DON'T you want? There are tones of ppl who have Asian influenced art styles as there are TONES of different art styles in animes, so that statement is same energy. But still it urks my nerves. ANIME ISNT AN ART STYLE ITS JUST THE SHORTER VERSION OF THE WORD ANIMATION.

Personally when ppl are like "sorry I don't think your art style suits the character" like, oh I'm sorry I didn't know you've seen your character in my art style. Like, you can't tell if the water is salty or safe until you drink it. Experiment a little its not like you're going to get a bad piece of art 9 times out of 10 the artist is actually really good, y'all just weird. I know its prolly just personal preference but there are better ways to not offend someone, like be specific with what type of art style, I mean as specific as can be stop using genres to categories art styles oh my goodness that's not why we have them. You want a fantasy style? Seven deadly sins is fantasy too. Its easier to get what want by being specific. Like if a man goes to a market area & asks for an orange fish & 2 fishers approach him. He tells the other guy sorry that's not the fish I'm looking for. That offends the Fisher cuz he brought the man exactly what he asked for, an orange fish. If the man was more specific like, I want a small orange fish, like a clown fish or gold fish not I don't want a large fish sorry but no. It's polite but still not the best way to do things & doesn't spare feelings. If ppl will measure a chair for its exact measurements to get a new cover on it, or a floor to add carpet y'all can be a bit more specific with what you are looking for.

Don't ask me if I drew that & don't assume I didn't why would I steal art of my own oc? Where would I get it from? Have you seen an artist with a style like the one I use if so tell me I'd like to meet them. Who on God's green earth would I have stole this from this character literally only exists here? I'm gonna assume I'm not the only one who has like, 5-6 diff ways I draw stuff. Just cuz its not like how that looks doesn't mean I might have gotten it off the black web gosh darn it.

Nitpicky tutorials, like my sister showed me this one about hands & arms who in their right mind would care? You don't need a tutorial about where the bone joints of your wrist go, just look at your hand. Stop nitpicking if the body is proportional anything else is just the style.

^^^THIS! Like it happens so much on DA like no my page is not an advertising board. go away

OT: Rant time but how once you get known for drawing fanart for something it's a pain in the ass to get anyone interested in ANYTHING else you draw. I get it, I can't control what people favorite and people tend to like fanart because it's something they're already into. But I'm tired of half-assed art I didn't put effort into & fanart for fandoms I've long left getting all the favs. Meanwhile I've moved on to other fandoms or original projects. I hate feeling like people only give a damn about me if I'm pumping out BEMANI, Patapon, or Vib-ribbon fanart even though I left all those fandoms. Like anything new I bring to the table whether it's fanart for a new interest or something original doesn't matter.

maybe i got to venty/personal but it bugs the living hell out of me

Edit bc I don't want to double post but @mydarlingDude I agree. Especially because the only time I've seen my teachers & professors get upset over 'anime art' is when you're supposed to be doing life-studies or another specific type of art. If someone's not on task & especially if they're being snappy about ofc their art teacher isn't gonna be ok with them drawing 'anime art'

:`)))) that´s why I hate DeviantArt or Pinterest (wouldn't recommend Pinterest for art sharing at all in the first place lol), tumblr etc. what gets the most attention 24/7? right, fanart and other ugly shit I did 5 years a go.

Recent content where I improved a ton, original projects I´m proud of?  Everyone be like: hah let's just act like this doesn't exist.

When people say that art teachers "hate" when students draw anime art. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I've never met one that did. Art teachers just want you to know your basic fundamentals of anatomy and structure before getting into hyper-stylization (because that's exactly what anime is). Like Picasso himself said, "learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist."

when people dont know how to color dark skin properly and everyone looks really grey or ashy. do you have eyes lol? people dont look like that :/ coloring darker skin tones isnt that hard i promise. this is more of a general any kind of artist thing but i got similar sentiments to when ppl have a cast of characters (videogames/ shows/etc) and its mostly pale people with maybe two or three token People of Color. imagine all the wonderful designs you could make if you were to look outside of europe for inspiration o_o

- self pet peeve but the fact that it seems like 1 out of every 20 drawings is good or worth sharing. like... why do i even waste my time lol

- this is just a personal preference and i don't want to demean anyone who is a beginner at colouring.... but when the colours are really dull and muddy (also if airbrush tool is primarily used to shade). i like muted colours a lot, it can be done well (and i see people do it well all the time) but yeah. sorry, don't mean to rub anyone the wrong way

- when i can't think of what to draw !! or want to draw a character but can't think of a pose ! (and then i go to look for references or a pose generator and nothing fits or inspires me). i have aphantasia so this plagues me constantly

- tutorial when the art has issues? i don't mean when people are just sharing what works for them but when the person presents the tutorial like "this is THE way to do it, don't do it any other way" and it's not even right or it doesn't even look good !! lol

When somebody says I have same face syndrome (not denying that I do) but I look at their art and...... all their faces look the same. Hello???

The fact that every romantic couple YCH ever is like

Like fdsjfdh come on!!

EDIT: I'm editing this one year later because I don't want someone to come across this and get the wrong idea of me, as I now realize this may come across as close-minded and not very body positive. (it wasn't pointed out to me, I just saw something that reminded me of this) I want to clarify.
My annoyence isn't with the fact that I now can't commission same sex couples with this ych, or that I can't assign the left pose to a male oc and the right one to a woman. Because of course I can! My annoyence was that I feel like the artist only wants to draw het couples (which is fine, draw what you want) and only wrote "any gender" to not get under fire, while still attracting more people who want their het ocs drawn. At least I think that's what my thought process was. Now I think this was far fetched.
My point is, the point of this wasn't to indicate that only women are petite and small and only men are big and bulky. Not at all.

ok this just be me or i'm just biased but,,

when people only shade a characters hair, it's extremely detailed, and you can see every line in the hair, and then the rest of the body is not detailed at all??
