Artist pet peeves master thread

Posted 4 years, 3 months ago (Edited 3 years, 4 months ago) by Petalofdreams

Hello friends!

I thought it'd be fun to create a thread so people can share stories  of their artist pet peeves. What do you hate about the community? what  do you hate about some people in the community? Is there something you absolutely hate but was never really able to say it out loud? Your chance is now!

Personally i really dislike it when people gatekeep stuff. Art is for  everyone and should be for everyone. If you want to draw something then  go for it unless it's outright hateful.  You don't have to have amazing  skills to do art. You don't have to be a certain way. You're an artist  alright? alright.

2021 edit: Thank you all for being respectful of each other! Its great seeing the differentiation of opinions and have an open minded discussion about it. Thats what i wanted. So thank you!

i hate it when people draw mermaid characters and they have em bend their tail at the “knee” or where the knee would be on a human person. fish dont bend like that -_- it looks so bad. if its a mermaid *costume* obv its fine but its so annoying to see lmfao

when you

you

you >:(((

for context: I HATE people on this community who 1. bid so lowly on adopts, comms and shit 2. Don't read anything and think that they can just throw a random amount and it'll be fine.

Adobe suite... There's plenty of single-payment and free alternatives to most of the programs, most of them in my experience run much better. The fact it's still considered high-tier (even if it's mostly schools & buisnesses these days) is frustrating imo.

when procreate exports my images at crunchy garbage quality so i have to airdrop a psd o my computer and save a jpg there so i can upload it to a website and then the site compresses it into oblivion (instagram i am looking at you. why tf is a site specifically meant for images so terrible for art)

also @ salida yeah!! that bugs me too

@salida the mermaid knee thing bothers me so much. Also not a fan of when mermaids are drawn with "leg contours", like the tail is just a sheet of fabric wrapped around human legs. Why would you draw a mermaid to look like a person in a mermaid costume I don't understand-

When you finish a drawing and then you look at it again and realize there is some error from the file screwing itself over without you even realizing it did that. And you have to fix it even if it was too late.

PAIN.

Overall in the art community, I hate how people expect everything to be like 10 bucks. It´s not that people don't like the artists work it´s just that they expect their art to be low. I get not being able to afford art, that's not the point.. If you want to buy art and go to professional high skilled artists don´t message them and be "I can give you 5€ please draw me a fully rendered scene". It just makes me feel bad for any artist. And as someone who has experienced this as well I´m honestly pissed. Even worse when you have your prices, terms and everything clearly listed and everyone ignores it like they don´t matter. It´s honestly no surprise a lot of people with higher prices don´t get orders. Especially on toyhouse. And when you use places like amino, you just want to throw yourself away when you get a message about "caN yoU dRaw ME for 10ac?" thanks for ignoring my commission wiki

Not knowing how to do transparent backgrounds for adopts. It bothers me more than it should but I never really like having a piece with a piercing white background. I've over the years have asked a few different artist here and there. A few I tried to explain what I wanted but ended up giving up on them. [This isn't to say that I don't know some art styles don't use layers for when they paint things and it can't be helped which I understand fully.] But, It always makes me second guess that this art is stolen from somewhere else. I tend to avoid anything with a background because of this. [I feel like when I started collecting, white backgrounds were a big sign of stolen work but now I see them a lot without question.] It use to be that providing a transparent background was the "proof" of purchase but I keep seeing nice stuff sandwiched onto white backgrounds without transparent versions.

Also my 2nd peeve is probably not receiving the largest sized file possible. That is also another way of "proving purchase" that I feel has been lost now-a-days. Original sized files use to be guarded under "lock and key" lol. The number of times I've seen them freely posted makes me worried to no end. xD I myself always shrink the file before posting it to the public. In the case of ever having a "he said, she said" argument over who's the true owner. [You would win because their file would get more pixelated the more its messed with.] I remember viewing an ownership dispute drama over something like this and the defining point was the that their file was pixelated vs the clean crisp one. [Someone sold it on another site as a scam.]

Either way that's my peeve, it's not directed at anyone in particular or etc. It popped into my head while shopping for oc's. I also don't like being pinged for arguments or etc. I just like to be left alone for eternity.
