commision pet peeves?

Posted 5 years, 1 month ago (Edited 2 years, 2 months ago) by Mochi

sorry to add to the string of pet peeve threads OTL. i just thought this would be a good place for people who buy commissions and who sell commissions to vent their frustrations. ill go first to break the ice.

when artists make you pay through friends and family, its soooo sketch. also when artist say theyll have your stuff done in one week...and never get back to you or do it way after a week. like its happened so many times and i feel like its a 'give me five minutes' type of thing. like just give me your real time frame, no need got give yourself a week if you know its not going to happen.

you all have very valid points! im going to add another complaint of mine since no one has said it yet.

when people whitewash my ocs. sidif thats the main thing that annoys me. like their skin color is very clear in the ref, why make their skin lighter?

edit: nvm someone already said it lol

new rules: please dont be transphobic or racist, i cant believe i have to say this but seriously, what the heck

People who order a commission and then show up a day later like "actually I don't need it now 😚"

I can understand wanting to cancel a commission because it's been forever/lack of communication/emergency/etc., but cancelling after barely 2 days because "you don't need it now"?

Wanting to commission somebody for something super cool that they did for somebody else, only to find out they're a minor doing usd PayPal commissions with no assurance that it's their legal guardian running the account.

That's a bucket of slippery "I'm in no way protected if they take my money and run". Taking my money elsewhere I guess :/

Often people are surprised with how quick I update them which.. kinda makes me feel bad. I hope they don't think I rush. I actually just have a lot of freetime due to my life situation.  The art I do takes plenty of hours. I actually do many breaks too or feel demotivated for a day. For me it's often not quick at all. And getting all these messages makes me feel awful. I know they probably don't have any bad intentions.  That's on me. But I wish it would stop sometimes.

I know people complained about this before but this grinds my gears on instagram way too much

I will not DM you for your prices, no matter how good your art is. Why not just list them in the commission post or in a story thread thing idk what it's called? Are you hoping people will feel more inclined to buy your art if you already have a conversation going on? Yeah, I see right through you, buddy.

Not receiving wips for commissioned art. For a bust or sketch, sure no big, but for anything beyond that? I think a wip is absolutely necessary, no artist (myself included) is ever 100% on getting every aspect of a customer's character perfect on the first try. Sometimes you forget small details, or overlook critical character aspects. A simple WIP can clear that shit right up. Please. Always. Provide. A. WIP!

Artists breaking their own deadlines; ex: expect a wip in X days, the project will be done in X weeks/months. The deadline comes and goes with complete radio silence. Shit happens, sure, but if YOU set the deadline (and tell your customer what it is), and YOU break it, have the courtesy of tossing them a quick note of 'sorry won't be done for XYZ or something came up, it'll take longer). Or better yet, please don't set one at all unless you're going to stick to it! You save everyone a lot of trouble if you refrain from setting these arbitrary deadlines, because 99% of the time when an artist has given me a project deadline? They go bust, every time. And almost every single one didn't even note me about being unable to make their deadline. :/

After filling out the form and providing outfit refs; and receiving the final artwork, and it's very very clear that the artist not only rushed the piece, but that they traced parts of the photo outfit ref provided. At this point, I don't know if I should bother calling them on it, or just say nothing and put them on my ever-growing list of artists to not-ever-commission-again.

idk how I keep seeing artists who say "dark skinned characters cost extra" and they keep getting away with it with no comments about it just fine, but this is the third time I've seen it and I think it's just a little concerning!!

^ not to support excluding any type of characters (as I personally find it very unprofessional? Why opening commissions if your list of "can't(s)" has 70 items on it including basic things like age and skintones? )

... but I assume it's because dark skin is "harder" to color? Not many people know you have to color the palms, armpits, feet, etc "white-like" and use more saturated reds and browns and not pinks and peach oranges to add warmth to the skintones, etc. In general, working with dark/er colors requires a higher level of color theory knowledge than using light colors and pastels.

Skykristal AGH i feel you so hard there. I feel like its such an undertalked about thing, or just not that common?,,, i am the same, im a very fast artist and practiced to BE a fast artist but still produce quality stuff in short times. im just FAST. If i get a commission, likely chance is that ill have it done in the next few hours or day, 2 at most (if im focusing my time on it) because i just have lots of free time! but i always wait a few days to send it because i dont want them to think i rushed it!

My personal pet peeve as the commission-taker(????the artist lmao) I Hate being given artistic freedom, ESPECIALLY for customs! I know some people think its nice to say the artist can do whatever they like, but like...honestly! I want the commissioner to give me guidelines and rules so that i can make a product that fits exactly what they want. If you dont tell me what you want, i cant provide a drawing that fits your wants and needs!!! Tell me what you want aahh!!! it makes it so much easier for the both of us.

Skykristal

^ I feel that. Artistic freedom can be relaxing but I prefer it when I get clear rules/idea of what the person actually wants and likes. Otherwise... Ugh I kinda get anxious. But the people who give artistic freedom are for the most part not picky at all. Which is also a little relief tbh. But when you haven't worked with that person yet I really don't like it.

Now my pet peeve. Idk what the current issue is but people either want to offer me less then what I sell my art for or don't want to commission me because they don't know how I draw. Um do you have eyes? My examples and newest arts are there. Sorry if this sounds a little harsh but I feel like I currently only have struggles with my art... It's exhausting

Also when clients are very and I mean very picky and are not even nice to you in any way. I'm honestly afraid to work for them again. I don't want to be rude and deny services to them. (Unless they're requesting anything inappropriate)
