commision pet peeves?

Posted 5 years, 1 month ago (Edited 2 years, 2 months ago) by Mochi

sorry to add to the string of pet peeve threads OTL. i just thought this would be a good place for people who buy commissions and who sell commissions to vent their frustrations. ill go first to break the ice.

when artists make you pay through friends and family, its soooo sketch. also when artist say theyll have your stuff done in one week...and never get back to you or do it way after a week. like its happened so many times and i feel like its a 'give me five minutes' type of thing. like just give me your real time frame, no need got give yourself a week if you know its not going to happen.

you all have very valid points! im going to add another complaint of mine since no one has said it yet.

when people whitewash my ocs. sidif thats the main thing that annoys me. like their skin color is very clear in the ref, why make their skin lighter?

edit: nvm someone already said it lol

new rules: please dont be transphobic or racist, i cant believe i have to say this but seriously, what the heck

Please... Don't change your characters design in the process of commissioning me. I showed you the flatcolor, you agreed. Then after completion you tell me some things are actually different on your character. WHY. don't do this to artists.

I know I'm probably entering a hell hole here because anatomy in stylized art styles is really hard to grasp, but I have to vent, it's been bothering me a lot since it did happen to me multiple times...

It is extremely frustrating if I order a piece, and the example is 100/10 anatomy-wise, I check it left and right, make sure I like it, make sure I like the facial proportions the person works with, the way they stylize hair, eyes, and chins.... but then I'm given a piece drawn from some (excuse me) weird bumbum angle that the artist obviously barely ever draws (ex. the eyes are somehow moved to the side which looks very off since the artist is very obviously not familiar with said angle, the hair does not "fit" on the head because the artist does not know how to draw them from the said angle, etc.). Simply, the anatomy of the final piece and the example are so different that If placed next to each other it doesn't even look like they are only a couple of months apart because they look several YEARS apart (the example looking like it's been done much later, after more experience was gained) so they look like day and night, that's how different they end up being.

Please, don't advertise your commissions with your VERY BEST examples, especially if there is no way to go check your "regular" art. I know you want customers, but disappointed customers don't come back... be honest, be fair to your customers, they will appreciate it and come back. Advertise only what you are able to deliver repeatedly and even of characters you haven't drawn before.

EDIT: none of my recent commissions have had this problem, please don't go after any of those artists!! give them love instead, they all did wonderful !!

Fake emergency commissions. I see too many of these and honestly, what’s so fun about making people feel bad for you? If your art is good customers will find their way to you JFC.

(Not all emergency commissions are invalid or fake btw, but sadly a lot of people use the term “emergency” way too loosely :/

^sharkimi I feel that.

I don't know if I'm just extra but whenever I pay someone they never give a thank you or at least a response that they got it. I do that ALL the time when someone pays me. Honestly I think most artists don't do that am I right? Last time I also had someone who included "please tell me if you received my payment" in their message after they paid me, which makes me think it's very common that artists don't give a confirmation or a thanks or anything at all. And that honestly bothers me a lot.

I did writing commissions and I hated almost everything about it at times...

People commissioning art of the artist’s own character. Yes that is a thing and it makes zero sense. Idk why I’d pay someone to draw their own oc. You do you IG but outside of staring at the drawing you can’t really do anything with it (use it as a pfp, a banner, etc) because it’s someone else’s oc.

XINOIZYS

I don't do this, but not everyone buys commissions with the intention of using it as their icon/banner/etc. They buy them because they really like the artist, and want to support them while getting to see something unique with that character. However, I do find it weird to commission an artist to draw their own OC, solely because that artist may often be drawing that character, so you're asking for more when they already do it just as often.

On topic... What's the point of coming to an artist if you didn't have an exact idea of what you wanted, not include images of what you're looking for, and asking the artist for ideas? It just drains the artist. Please be organized.

It KILLS me when a customer asks me for update EVERY DAY. Dude, you already know my turnaround time is about 2 weeks, you can at least give me 3 day gaps to make enough progress to show you???? I know some people just get really excited and impatient, but art takes time, man. Especially since all of my selling artwork is paintings, it takes time, so I love patient customers who respect the turnaround time. This doesn't happen all the time though, I mostly provide wips before being asked!

I had to blacklist this person from future commissions after canceling theirs because I was so fed up. When a commissioner requests something small be fixed or adjusted everytime you send a progress screenshot. including when I sent the screenshot showing how I fixed whatever it was, they’d add one more thing.… they made a sketch that would normally take a day take almost a week and when I said I needed to move and charge for further fixes they told me i wasn’t done with the sketch like I didn’t know what I was doing

^That sucks LMAO

Not sure if this counts since this is an art trade thing but someone has not completed their side of our art trade and it has been 3 years. I even redrew the art a while back to show my improvement and I didn’t get a response back from the person. Apparently they were leaving Instagram too, like just finish the art you owe me or tell me you can’t.

That paypal service fee seems like it gets larger every day. It hurts me in the balls.

when people draw ferals and their front legs bend forward at the joint, it kills me to see that.
