commision pet peeves?

Posted 5 years, 1 month ago (Edited 2 years, 2 months ago) by Mochi

sorry to add to the string of pet peeve threads OTL. i just thought this would be a good place for people who buy commissions and who sell commissions to vent their frustrations. ill go first to break the ice.

when artists make you pay through friends and family, its soooo sketch. also when artist say theyll have your stuff done in one week...and never get back to you or do it way after a week. like its happened so many times and i feel like its a 'give me five minutes' type of thing. like just give me your real time frame, no need got give yourself a week if you know its not going to happen.

you all have very valid points! im going to add another complaint of mine since no one has said it yet.

when people whitewash my ocs. sidif thats the main thing that annoys me. like their skin color is very clear in the ref, why make their skin lighter?

edit: nvm someone already said it lol

new rules: please dont be transphobic or racist, i cant believe i have to say this but seriously, what the heck

As an artist, it really irritates me seeing people who are looking to hire an artist post hiring threads that just consist of really vague 'looking for commissions, contact for more details' type posts.

How are the artists supposed to determine if their skills are suited to the task or if the project is something they'd be interested in working on if you don't describe what you're looking for in your hiring thread right from the get go?

As a person who taking commissions, my current pet peeve is when the client trying to chat with me about unrelated topic too much.

Like, I understand that we can chat now and then about the topic outside of the commission, but when it happens too often I usually felt annoyed because I felt like I had to be polite and keep answer to their messages. That just distracted me from finishing their orders.

Don't wanna be rude but sometimes that's why I just reply to their message late and end the conversation with their order asap. Man, I love my clients because they single-handedly feed me and my medical bills, but I really want them to understand the boundaries...

Been getting ghosted a lot lately when it comes to the artists finishing their stuff and it’s been irking me a lot, idk if something is in the water but it’s been making me less likely to try anymore

Been waiting on one for almost a year now too

when people slide into the DMs, you basically set up the entire commission with them and then they go "i'll be back next week once i get the money" or something along those lines and then they just. never show up.

bud i get like 1 commission every 3 months, don't tease me like that 😭

Agree with that others have said.

1. If you don't have public prices listed I won't commission you , sorry. Messaging someone to get the prices makes me uncomfortable. And I honestly don't know why you wouldn't want to have public prices. Imagine you go to a store , not knowing how much you need to pay in the end. Or running to the cashier with every item you're interested in to ask for the price so you know if you can afford it or not. How annoying. And also as an artist myself I would feel very uncomfortable throwing people my prices in their face in a private convo, when they don't know what to expect at all.

2. Big agree on the "message me if I owe you something" posts. No. Just.. no. This is the worst way possible to handle and organise commissions. If you're that kind of artist, I'm sorry but I will not commission you like that.

3. I have mentioned it before but ghosting. It's totally okay if you can't afford it. But then I don't really get why you message me in the first place tbh. My prices are public and linked literally anywhere, even all my posts on social media, my bios , anywhere. It's not possible to miss it. People go like "hi I want a commission". But after that no answer at all. Nothing. What's the point of doing this? Seriously this is pissing me off. It has gotten worse the last few months.

4. What's up with artists doing the exact opposite of what I request? This is not a one time thing. I ask for this and that accessory on my character to not be included and people include it. I ask for this specific hair colour and style on my ref, and people draw the other one. Ahhhhhh

When you get commissioned to draw in a different style. I always thought that if you're commissioning someone, it means that you like their style. You want to see characters in that style. Asking to draw in another style completely defeats that purpose.

Obviously, this doesn't refer to anyone who DOES do multiple-style commissions. They make sense. But when you see someone who only does their own style, and isn't willing to do another, I just don't understand why they couldn't find someone else.

this is a problem i've faced when getting commissions from irl family friends and relatives but asking me to recreate something in my style.

i've always seen this as a bit of an insult to the original artist, like "oh their work is nice but i think this would look a lot better in your style!". and i'm not talking about things like memes or screenshot redraws or the like, i'm talking about something that was made for them by someone else that they want me to recreate.

maybe this is a really small thing but i just try to respect other artists regardless of their skill level and how their art looks and being asked to recreate something because someone thinks you could do it better just rubs me the wrong way.

I'm losing my marbles over this, it's the most irritating thing I've dealt with several times

when you're working with an artist and they ask if you want any changes, TELL THEM WHAT CHANGES YOU WANT. there's a reason I ask, I want you to like the art!! for the love of GOD do NOT EDIT MY ART YOURSELF??? without my permission???

please, just say specifically what you want changed. don't tell me you love it and want nothing changed, then completely change it before you upload it to toyhouse with my credit >_<

Artists who has a long ass DNI list just before their commission list, with very personal stuff. It’s like shooting yourself in the leg.

I have a few times seeked new art, and ignored artists with unproffesional info on their sites. And they often ask why, and then I have to tell them “You wrote yourself, do not interact if you are older then me. Do not interact if you like things I dont like”, there is a 50/50 that I am older then you, there is a good chance I like stuff you dont like so why should I commission an artist who judge a customer by this”.

Seeing adverts of ych/commission info of the artists OC x Your OC

No

I don’t want to pay you to draw your OC with mine. Never.

I don’t know you, and Having wildly OOC art of my own character is stupid and defeats the point.

Do personal art on your own time. Stop trying to mix business/pleasure because you can’t manage to motivate yourself to draw your own characters without someone paying you for it.
