commision pet peeves?

Posted 5 years, 1 month ago (Edited 2 years, 2 months ago) by Mochi

sorry to add to the string of pet peeve threads OTL. i just thought this would be a good place for people who buy commissions and who sell commissions to vent their frustrations. ill go first to break the ice.

when artists make you pay through friends and family, its soooo sketch. also when artist say theyll have your stuff done in one week...and never get back to you or do it way after a week. like its happened so many times and i feel like its a 'give me five minutes' type of thing. like just give me your real time frame, no need got give yourself a week if you know its not going to happen.

you all have very valid points! im going to add another complaint of mine since no one has said it yet.

when people whitewash my ocs. sidif thats the main thing that annoys me. like their skin color is very clear in the ref, why make their skin lighter?

edit: nvm someone already said it lol

new rules: please dont be transphobic or racist, i cant believe i have to say this but seriously, what the heck

This was brought up before but I need to say it again.

low resolution files.

Please... for the love of god at least offer some decent image quality. A lot of artists don't care about this at all. And some even ignore it when you ask to please email the full size. (Because only posting it on platform x y compresses the image, on some even heavily).

And then when you get the email. It's the same low resolution. Why would you draw (or export) a size of 700px for a full-body scene? This looks so pixelated. I personally use AIs to scale up images , This one for example does a pretty amazing job compared to others I've tried.  Which *kinda* solves this issue. But the fact that you get awful quality images is a shame. Especially when you pay a lot and it's not an icon or well, pixelart. Clearly those are low resolution but I think the issue I mean is clear. The problem is also that many don't state how big the canvas is they draw on or only draw on super tiny sizes. This is often a reason why I don't commmission some artists. Image quality is important to me and I personally state that as well in my auctions and comm page in which size the art comes. It gives you safety.  You'll get a pretty, beautiful resolution where you can see the details, set it up as a high quality wallpaper and so on.

edit: I wish artists wouldn´t ignore my messages :/ yes life happens of course. But it shouldn't take a month to even open my message and you also continue to post new YCHs....  and zero finished work. I love your style but I hate how you handle things.

Haven't noticed it on this site due to not looking on here but it probably happens here too.

When an artist doesn't post if they accepted a form or not. Like, it doesn't make your shop look good if I can't tell if you are actually doing work or not. Even weirder when I know a particular piece was done due to seeing it elsewear but there's still no evidence on the thread. Like, how is someone supposed to know they were accepted? I'm guessing messaged privately? Just so much lack of communication or at least in the public eye that it's so to tell if someone is reputable. I get it if a commission was started out privately but when it's in the open like that it just looks like it's being ignored even if it technically wasn't.

when artists completely change your characters personality especially when i give them a snippet of their personality,, like i get it if i forgot/you didnt ask for any further info but if the whole gallery is full of them not smiling and being grumpy its a bit confusing when you draw them all bubbly and happy.. dunno maybe its petty but i dont get the thought process behind it

when they want to be paid after finishing work and when i ask to pay upfront and they wont let me... girl help i don't want you to be scammed J,FGBH,KFD

When artists choose the most unfiting backgrounds ;-; (for simple backgrounds and such that isn't a scene or anything related to the character)

I had it happen a few times. Most commonly drawing my males in cute pink backgrounds or even drawing/assuming my character is female.  Which makes no sense.  All my refs I give people have their gender and species included. + Don't assume a characters gender based on their name pls. (Not saying you can't give guys a pink theme obviously lmao but in my case it was very unfiting and they made my character look more girly)

⬇️⬇️ ouch... this is so frustrating. Was in a very similar situation several times. Or artists simply doing the opposite of what I mentioned and even directly linked to them. I just... don't understand why mistakes like this happen.its common sense to use the image I gave you and not to scroll down for 6 hours to use 80 year old art to draw my character. Like what-

sharkimi

When I make sure I mentioned the character has tattoos, sent a direct link to his ref where he has all the tattoos displayed, AND add an explanation that some pieces in his gallery are wrong because other people were not listening to me ...and the person still draws him without the tattoos. I know artists communicate with a lot of people and can forget details, but this character is literally covered in tattoes... and I even mentioned it again after they send me the sketch and they assured me the tattoos will get added during the coloring process. Now I have to be that bumbum of a person everyone hates and ask for edits after the final render is already done...

I even had a person go out of their way to check the "Please do not use" tab and draw an old version of a character because the old version was "simpler and easier to draw". internal scream. I even sent them a direct link to the new ref.

Please, artists, listen to what the customer is telling you and do not just guess what is the correct "version" they want (or the easiest to draw TT)

I have both laughed and sighed every time I've received art of my characters with stubble... without it. There have been other details that have gotten missed before, but beard stubble has been the one that seems to happen the most for whatever reason. Easy enough fix, but I've always wondered what it is specifically about that. People out here shaving my mans.

When you have to ask for updates after weeks over and over again otherwise the artist simply doesn't come back to you and literally finishes 10 other things they just recently got hired for and finishes them in like 2 days.sorry do I even matter to you? Lol

Biggest pet peeve for me is probably when artists don't work in order and they also don't state this anywhere,  so that you have to wait for months to even get a sketch. While others get their art in a day or two. I think this is terrible way to handle commissions and it makes me slightly furious. Don't let others wait for months. I literally bough a simple portrait and not a complex scene you have to draw.

RandomStorytale

omfg to the above! This just happened to me last year. I waited close to a month and a half for a sketch that was supposed to be done "within a few days"

I get things happen

BUT as someone who's paying money, is it too much to be updated?

Or those with a mile high to do list yet still accepting comms. That's not fair to the others who have been waiting for quite some time and good way to sink oneself in a hole.

I always send my Customers Sketches in Between so they can tell me if they want some things changed before i start Painting and can´t fix it afterwards. In the Past i had several Experiences where they said they liked the Sketch and it´s fine and after i finished the Commission they noticed sth missing or sth they didn´t like,

LIKE GURL- I ASKED YOU- SEVERAL TIMES-

Really gets on my nerves, cause i really want my Customers to be satisfied but if they´re not honest with me it´s kinda hard
