Ey just don’t emote very much - ey’re not an expressive guy. Ey don’t regulate eye tone, either. Eyr emotions are also very muted and dialed back, so ey don’t usually feel anything worth smiling about it. Ey have feelings, but they’re very warped (hivemind side effect). Lichen learns how to smile from copying Felix, but it always looks really fucked up on eyr face so ey don’t really do it unless it’s in a defensive “baring your teeth” sort of way
i have a few characters like this, but theo is the first one to come to mind! he's just so one-track-minded and so dedicated to work 24/7 that he never has any time for fun or relaxation
Morel is a computer virus, specifically Creeper— the very first computer virus in history. He rarely smiles, let alone shows any emotion. He’s extremely apathetic and adopted a nihilistic approach towards life due to his ostracization from society (and eventual death) by the hands of his own brother. Now resurrected as a zombie thanks to the fungi outbreak that claimed him in his initial death, he clings to life by seeking revenge on the world that labeled him as an outcast, and especially upon his brother. He’s not incapable of showing emotion, however. His partner in crime, Yui, who resurrected him for mysterious reasons (she claims it is in her self-interest), is incredibly unusual to Morel. Her personality is the antithesis to his doom and gloom, and more importantly computer viruses by nature have incredibly antagonistic relationships. They are selfish, motivated by their own seemingly impossible goals in pursuit of their vices. Yet Yui is different. Again, for reasons entirely unknown to him, Yui helps him. She claims to not be above her own programming, and yet glimpses of her humanity shine through, unbeknownst to her. She is obsessed with appearing human, this obsession consumes her so that she doesn’t even realize her sincere moments of humanity, when she’s not even trying, fly completely under her own radar. While they are both visiting an arcade, Yui gets incredibly frustrated at a crane game. Yui is powerful beyond belief. She has wrecked devastation and havoc on colossal scales— her destruction knows absolutely no bounds. Yet she falls to the whims of a rigged, run-down 50 cent crane game. All because the plush she wants keeps getting dropped. He hangs back for a moment, wins the oversized stuffed caterpillar, and hands it to her. Yui squeals, overwhelmed by happiness and also confused by this random gesture of kindness. She lets him in on the fact that the only reason why she wanted to win the plush (which can be seen here) in first place was that it reminded her of Morel… as evidenced by the plush it looks absolutely nothing like him. In that moment, Morel stifles a laugh and briefly smiles. :]
