💡 Why does your OC exist (in meta)?

Posted 5 years, 6 months ago (Edited 5 years, 5 months ago) by fuelli

Hi! A lot of us have OCs with fleshed-out backstories and complex personalities... but what was the first thing, the first trait you've come up to for them? What made you create this character? The answer can be as serious ("I wanted to create a character to share with my experiences with <event>") or silly ("I really like pasta so I've made a character who likes pasta") as you want!

Just have fun and please keep things civil ♥

A whole gaggle of my OCs started out as Mabinogi characters and oh boy did that turn into a rabbithole of interconnected storylines. The only thing they have in common with Mabi now is some... fantasy elements, but I know... I know the truth...

Nate only exists because I needed a pre-death Soul for Fleit (no pics sorry), who I had made because I wanted to play an archer. We started joking about Fleit being a zombie because back in the day, training archery from scratch with no other skills trained was like stabbing yourself in the eye and I was dead pretty much all the time. Fleit ended up becoming my main and I was rly good for a minute back in the day. If u think about it, he'd never exist if Mabi had balanced, fair, and functional game mechanics at release and I think that's beautiful. Modern MMOs cannot compete and it's not up for debate.

Blair was made because they had just released the incubus dungeon and if you defeated the incubus boss solo with a female character (yeah), he dropped the item "Thick Horn" (heh). Being extremely 16, I obviously needed an incubus character more than I needed air to breathe, so my friends and I made some together. His original name was Bestanden (or Bes) and anytime I played him, I remained very In Character, meaning I walked (not ran) everywhere, and if I needed to get somewhere fast, I used a horse, and yes it was as inconvenient as it sounds. Before Mabinogi legalized same sex marriage (lmao), Bes and his bf Verlangen (Vern) "married" each other ingame via my friend and I creating female alts with the shortened versions of their names. You got a title for being married, so we'd walk around as "Bestanden, Vern's Husband" and "Verlangen, Bes's Husband" and if you can believe it, a non-zero number of people believed we had actually hacked the game somehow.

Rigel exists because I wanted another incubus with some of the new customization options Mabinogi had just released, but also..... because I....... really desired a character named after return the slab boy from Courage the Cowardly Dog. (His original ingame name was Ramsses.) Him n Cec weren't originally related at all, but they both had red hair so I was like yeah, ok, sure. And That's Character Development. 👍

Cec only exists bc I needed a Bad Guy to be antagonistic towards another character in an RP. His original name (not Cecil) was yoinked from one of my neopets because it was that urgent. My friend and I found the baddies (see: "Ally") interesting enough to write that we just kept doing it and got attached (as you do). But they were such abysmal people that keeping the original story would have made either of them being remotely sympathetic characters completely unbelievable. It's been about 10 years and more overhauls than I could begin to describe here, but have a Free Sample: They don't even share a time period with the characters they were originally meant to interact with. I... try not to get TOO emotionally attached to blatant antagonists anymore. Also, he never even existed ingame. :')

Vivian Delli

It's a stupid story honestly,, so around September I wanted to make an adopt for money. I didn't know what type of theme I should go for, but then I saw my drawer, the patterns and the plants on it. So I based him off that and felt too attached to him. Now he's my main oc :>

Hecerion LiminalOverTea

Hec exists because I needed to come up with a character for Elder Scrolls paragraph RP back in 2012/13. His looks were literally a Skyrim Altmer preset (because I was lazy...and a coward), he was Thalmor interrogator, and his big thing was casting ice magic as torture and simping over male Thalmor officials.

He has come a loooong way. 😂

dakota terra lakings cozylittleartblog

some of them started out as fun designs that i later assigned personality to, like orion. but some of them had something pushing them from the start, like dakota i designed entirely because i saw a jacket on tumblr and i thought it'd be cool to design a character based on it's design. and now, we have dakota xD although originally she was way more Vibrant, i should hunt down her first drawing and post it just for funsies.

i've got a few characters that started out as fan characters or fan designs for something (tessa, nyx, clara, james), that i later developed far beyond those properties and wanted to use for original stories. i've got some characters i made in direct response to inspiration from something, like Auto i made because I wanted my own retro object head character after seeing RGB from the webcomic The Property Of Hate. (originally, he was more of a hipster.) some characters were made out of necessity (AJ, blaire, wyatt, val), simply needing to flesh out a universe so it didn't literally revolve around one character. rosie was a robot sim i made in sims 3 that i REALLY loved the design of, so i adapted her design later on and gave her a 50's theme. i don't think i make characters just for one trait as much as i do make designs that i want to flesh out, but there's still a few instances of that happening, like with Auto or Dakota.

While looking at a friend's oc i said "hecc ye i want cute girl who becomes into a beast" and she came out lol

At first it was herself who could transform, as to say it was still herself; with the time it becomes more of a kind of "alter ego", an actual spirit who possessed her

Katzpaugh Moonlit-Mask

Katzpaugh's design came to me in a dream-vision thing one night! Which, as noted on her page, is honestly super in-character. I couldn't stop thinking about this weird person with a smiling cat mask for months afterwards and eventually came up with a fittingly strange backstory!

And while he's not on the site yet, my Type: Null character Azimuth was made as a tribute to the lost Opportunity rover!

Sairey (80$ CAD) wolvykasu

he's literaly there because

1 : I have too many brown or orange range character

2 : It's gonna be an anthro albino weasel that dye it's fur because I want an albino anthro

3 : it's gonna be a weasel because I challanged myself to not have anthro characters of the same specie

"Berry" AlmondGames

My friend said "join my cursed link oc discord" and i said "no but I will make one", then immediatly searched up "legend of zelda cereal" and created berry

Lockem

So here's Radium. He's technically my oldest OC. And only recently did I give him a proper backstory, since for a long time I struggled to give him one. So, it started with Imagine Dragons "Radioactive". It was recently dropped I think and I fell in love with the song. (That's like the second somg I heard from that band, the first was "Demons".) And so that sparked my interest in everything radiation and superheroes and superpowers! This led to my fascination with the periodic table, especially the radioactive elements. I thought the idea of radioactive decay and the process of w bosons (or something? I can't remember, that was a phase) or was it leptons? Was like the best thing ever. So naturally I would want to create a character like that. And so Radium was born.

Shadmé ShadmeTheAngel

I like this question! I never make one-note characters- I always like to give my characters a reason for existing.

Shadmé was created as a self-representation of myself that I could use to RP online. She also fulfilled the purpose of being a Kid Icarus OC, as I really wanted to write a Kid Icarus fanfic.

Conversely, Lightmé was created as a doppelgänger to Shadmé. In-universe, there is an object called the Mirror of Truth that creates a corrupted copy of those who look into it, and I really wanted to play with that.

Ember was initially created as a version of Shadmé who was human (I wasn't always allowed to play an angel) and had elemental powers- whose strength came from within and not from weaponry. She later became her own character, though.

After I decided I wanted to write Ember's story and that she and five other elementals would play a key role, I began to build the rest of the Catalysts based off their elements. However, I often defied stereotypes- for instance, Aeran is wild and violent, a contrast to very chill and peaceful wind-user stereotypes, and Solyss, despite representing light, has a devious and cunning side.
