Comfort (Skyle)

“Leave me alone!” Kyle screamed as he jolted upright in bed. Her face was still fresh in his mind and he threw the sheets off, feeling hot and sweaty and trapped and sad. Suddenly his breathing was faster and he was crying, fat tears draining nonstop from his eyes, continuing no matter how much he tried to wipe them away. The first sob that tore itself from his chest hurt his throat, and he coughed, squeezing his eyes shut and balling his hands into fists. Anger mixed with sadness in his chest and he couldn’t stop the tears, or the sobs, no matter how angry he was at them, and his lungs couldn’t get enough air and he wanted nothing more than to die right now, and then suddenly the door was open and his hair stood on edge.

It was Skye. Skye was in the doorway, dressed in his thick grey robe, his hair down and messy. Fuck. No. Kyle didn’t cry like this, and he especially didn’t do it in front of Skye.

“Get the fuck out,” Kyle growled, cut off by a hiccup, wiping his tears angrily.

“Kyle, man, what’s wrong?” Skye said, his voice gentle, too gentle. Kyle couldn’t see his face, it was too dark, but even if he could see his eyes were too full of tears to make out anything more than basic shapes, Skye’s form a blob in the doorway, silhouetted by the glow from what was probably the TV.

Kyle didn’t answer, couldn’t answer, sobbing into his fist, biting on his knuckles to try and stop the sounds from coming but it was too much, and he turned away from Skye, hoping he would just go away. He couldn’t breathe and he couldn’t see and he could hear footsteps over his sobs and a moment later the room was illuminated with light, following a soft click indicating the lamp switch being flicked. Kyle didn’t look at Skye but he knew the other man was making his way around the bed, and he stood, turning his back to him and trying to get his breathing under control. This was the last thing he needed right now.

Skye laid a hand on his shoulder and Kyle flinched, trying again in vain to stop the tears from coming. After a minute or two Skye put both hands on Kyle’s shoulders and turned him around to face him. Kyle was too weak to fight him but he looked down, unable to meet his eyes. He was embarrassed and sad and just wanted to be alone.

Without warning Skye pulled Kyle forward into a hug. For a moment Kyle didn’t breathe. Skye had never made any move to do something like this before, but now he was and his arms were strong around Kyle’s shoulders and his stupid fucking hair was in Kyle’s face and Kyle couldn’t hold it back anymore and he started crying full force again, raising his stiff arms to wrap them around Skye’s back. “I miss her so much,” he choked out.

“I know.”

“I just want to know if she-she’s still alive.”

“I know, man, I know.”

Kyle didn't know how long he stayed like that or at what point Skye pulled away and helped him back into bed, turning off the lamp and leaving the room, leaving Kyle in the dark with his thoughts again, but a little calmer this time. All he could do was close his eyes again and try to go back to sleep.
