The Kingdom of Ivras
The setting of Anathema. The Kingdom of Ivras makes up an irregular peninsula on the continent of Ritha, separating the Mirror Bay from the rest of the Rithan Ocean. Since its humble beginnings as a coastal city-state overlooking the bay, it has grown into a regional superpower known for its impressive Mage Order, towering cities, and technological development.
The Ivratian climate ranges from subtropical in the Northeast to more moderate in other areas, becoming progressively colder and wetter in the South and West. The population is largely concentrated in cities with swaths of swampy farmland between. While most major population centers are connected by well-maintained roads, stretches of jungle in the South are still uncharted, settled by clans whose lives remain untouched by the monarchy. Faline, the City of Veils
Once simply called Ivras before the conquest of the peninsula, Faline is the kingdom’s capital and seat of power. Renamed for the beloved daughter of a former king, Faline is now the largest city in Ritha, and the primary port of trade for the continent. The city is crescent shaped, scaling up white cliffs overlooking the bay, and full of magically-engineered channels that allow ships to enter Ivras’s rivers. The city earned its moniker ‘the city of veils’ for the common sight of sails among its skyline as vessels navigate the crisscrossing waterways.
Magnificent buildings at different elevations are connected by intricate bridges, giving Faline a dazzling filigree of paths and archways. Magic is crucial to the constant construction of the city, and remains a daily sight in Faline’s ever-burning street lamps, subtly moving statuary, and flawless exterior.
The palace at Faline’s center is made of flowing towers of impossibly spiraled colored glass, with glittering streams of water rushing down its sides. From the ever-blooming gardens to the chandeliers suspended midair over downtown streets, Ivras’s pride in the capabilities of its mages is visible in every inch of its finest city.
Namarast, home of the Mage Order
In the treacherous swampland of the peninsula’s center looms the tower-city of Namarast. From the outside, it lacks the extravagance and ornament of Faline, but its clearly magical construction is impressive nonetheless. A circle of trees, their trunks pressed together and intertwining, weave over one another to form the city’s outer wall. These massive redwoods are indistinguishable from one another as they climb, braiding tightly to create the tower of Namarast.
From a distance, the city looks like the stump of a huge tree, its top splitting and uneven as if struck by lightning. Inside, it is a hive of activity and learning, made up of bright and airy lecture halls, libraries, and living quarters for the mages of Ivras’s Order. Namarast serves as a home for the mage academy and a place of research for the Order; all mages have a home here, if they wish it. The academy’s youngest initiates learn to read under the same roof where the Archmage dictates appointments and approves magical research.
To call Namarast a city is perhaps a bit generous, but it is the only structure for miles, barely visible from the village of Mead nearby. Visitors are welcome to tour this magnificent, self-sustaining structure, but are always closely guarded.
Mead, the Crossroads Village
On the bank of Ivras’s largest river sits Mead, a muddy and formerly sleepy village that has recently become overrun with traffic. As the closest riverside settlement to Namarast (and a quaint farmtown to boot), Mead has become a stop for tourists, traders, and traveling Order Mages alike. Mead’s residents quickly capitalized on their rural village’s old world charm, and riverboats from Faline and beyond are now welcomed with a daily market, offering visitors highly-priced produce and rustic goods.
Honey is a plentiful byproduct of the local farms’ necessary beekeeping, and the Village of Mead gets its name from the delicious honey-wine borne out of it. The town itself is made up of little more than the docks, a flour mill, and a number of recently-established taverns, each claiming to be the true and original creator of Mead’s famous mead.

neighboring kingdoms
Ivras shares the continent of Ritha with several other nations. Its immediate neighbors are Siregal, on the mainland to the north, and Nymene, across the bay to the west.
The Magocracy of Siregal
North of Ivras is Siregal, a young nation rife with unrest and economic inflation. Controlled by a mage senate, Siregal as it exists today was created out of a civil war during which battlemages overthrew the former monarchy. Politics in Siregal have not calmed since. Ivras’s relations with this chaotic realm are tense, and grow continuously more strained as Siregal's total reliance on magic pushes them closer and closer to economic collapse.
The Siregalese climate is tropical, and the population dense. Now that the fallen monarchy’s trade agreements have been made void, they are desperately attempting to make up for their lack of significant farmland with magical production of necessities.
The Iron Empire of Nymene
Ivras’s neighbor to the west is Nymene, their most steadfast ally. These sister kingdoms came into being around the same time centuries ago, ruled by monarchies with shared ambitions. With the combined power of Nymene’s ground troops and Ivras’s navy, they were able to conquer the entirety of the Mirror Bay coast and what is now the Ivratian Peninsula.
Nymene’s longstanding cultural distrust of mages and magic has only worsened since the civil war in Siregal. In recent decades, Empress Aris has made it Nymenian law to export mages to Ivras upon discovery, supplying the Order with recruits in exchange for a number of Ivratian sorcerers being posted in Nymene for defense.
The Nymenian climate is cool, oceanic, and exceedingly wet, and the population mostly rural and poor, separated into feudal holdings. Nymene’s love of tradition, extreme militarism, and fear of magic have kept their kingdom largely unchanged in recent centuries, and their dependency on magical protection from their allies in Ivras is only growing.
player-made locations
The kingdom of Ivras has a minimal amount of premade locations in order to include players in its development! You are invited to populate Ivras with locales of your own design. Player-made locations can be vast (such as a landform, region, or body of water) or small (a single cafe, or classroom at Namarast), and exist in the past or present.
If you have an idea for a location, head over to the Player Made Locations board of the forum, and create a thread sharing your concept! Text and images should all be of your own creation, and will earn Gold like all Anathema content. When your content is complete, don't forget to add up your gold count and claim your gold!
Other players will be allowed to interact with your location and discuss it in the forum thread, growing its connection to Anathema's story.
Creation Guidelines
Player-made locations can be vast (such as a landform, region, or body of water) or small (a single cafe or classroom at Namarast), and exist in the past or present.
Locations can go anywhere on Ivras's map, or overlap with existing features/regions, but should not contradict what already exists. There should not, for instance, be a desert region inside the wet marshlands.
You are welcome to create places that exist in Nymene and Siregal, keeping in mind that they will mostly be used for backstory purposes, as Anathema's story takes place in Ivras.
