lore/origins

The mochibun were once a race of regular rabbits. Well, almost— they were rabbits with human-level intelligence, some magical ability, and more durable than average bodies. But the mochibuns ancestors were almost hunted to extinction. Stronger supernatural beings realized that eating mochibuns could boost their own strength substantially. They were widely hunted, until only a few were left.

Through a chance meeting, the surviving mochibuns were saved by a sympathetic and powerful individual. This individual brought the remaining mochibuns to the moon so they could escape their hunters on Earth. But the moon wasn't completely uninhabited when they got there.

On the moon was the goddess Chang’EShe was an immortal who had been exiled to the moon for a great crime; unable to leave until she discovered an elixir capable of giving immortality. The mochibun ancestors were awed by Chang’E. Her knowledge of magic was like nothing they had ever been exposed to before. They treated her with great respect, and she was kind to them back-- the only company she had received after centuries of being alone. The mochibun ancestors joining her in her search for an immortality elixir.

While researching for the immortality elixir, the mochibuns created and consumed many strange things along the way. Things like intelligence boosting elixirs, magic strengthening tonics, and physical enhancement pills. The mochibuns evolved as a race due to consuming so many of the enhancing medicines. They gained stronger bodies, magical abilities, and even the ability to take human form. This was also around the time mochibuns gained their trademark ear patterns and mochi. While the immortality elixir continued to elude Chang'E and the mochibuns, this was a golden period of growth and development for the mochibun. They were no longer the easy prey animals of the past.

As a species, the mochibuns became the representatives of Chang’E to different worlds and communities. They distributed and sold medicines, searched for rare ingredients, and sought out new medical knowledge to help develop the immortality elixir. With their new powers, abilities, and wealth of magical knowledge, old enemies no longer dared to blatantly attack. Many mochibun grew to love adventuring and struck out on their own outside of purposes related to the immortality elixer. Some mochibun communities even reappeared on Earth. But the heart of mochibun civilization always stayed on the moon, and they remained ever loyal to Chang’E. Things were great for the mochibuns. They had everything they wanted and were no longer hunted. Nothing seemed like it could stop them--until, one day, Chang'E disappeared.

No one knows where she went, or what happened to her. She left no message behind, and no traces of her appeared later on. The elixir of immortality hadn’t yet been found, so the curse binding her to the moon hadn't yet been broken. The question of her disappearance still remains unanswered to this day.

With the disappearance of Chang’E, the mochibuns were thrown into turmoil. Leadership fractured and various factions were formed. Some mochibun wished to search for Chang’E, believing she was taken away by nefarious means. Others believed that she was killed by an enemy. Some even proposed that Chang’E had forsaken them. Old enemies saw the disappearance of Chang’E and the infighting of the mochibun as an opportunity. The power the mochibun had gained while with Chang’E only made them even more appealing to some of those that hunted them in the past instead of deterring them. Without a goddess to protect them and infighting amongst their ranks, the mochibun became easy targets in the eyes of these predators.

A devastating attack hit civilization on the moon and many mochibun died. It seemed that the days of calamity were back and that the mochibuns would face extinction again. Mochibun in all worlds were hunted down by unknown parties and most believed the mochibuns might finally go extinct. But this time, the mochibun had something capable of fighting back. Some of the experiments done to find the elixir involved immoral actions and items. Things that were outlawed from being done again because they were taboo. In the face of a mass extinction crisis, however, a group of mochibun resorted to condemned methods to fight off their enemies. At the cost of their sanity and everything else.

Those mochibuns returned a massive blow to their old hunters and sent a message to the world— that the mochibun could no longer be taken advantage of. They established the mochibun race as a power that could stand on its own, without the protection of Chang’E. Some consider this to be the darkest period of mochibun history, a stain on an otherwise pure legacy. The methods the mochibun of the past used to gain so much power became a taboo subject in contemporary society. But there are some that still remember. These mochibun who practice taboo methods to gain more power are outcasts in mochibun society and are always exiled if not imprisoned or executed upon discovery.

In the present day, the mochibun mainstream has put the past behind it. The mochibuns of today look forward to progress and innovation. Chang'E has become a legendary figure. Some believe she will return and pray to her. Others believe she was made up, or is long dead. Most mochibun still reside on the moon which has developed several sprawling metropolises. But a good number of mochibun also live on Earth or in other supernatural/spirit communities. Some have even traveled outside of the solar system to different universes. A few have even managed to go to different dimensions through powerful magic.

Mochibun are known as a light-aligned, respectable species by the greater supernatural community. Even though research for an immortality elixir has mostly been abandoned, contemporary mochibuns are well known for being excellent doctors, scientists, and inventors. When a supernatural being is need of a medical opinion, mochibun medicine is the best way to go!
