biology

This is a basic introduction to mochibun biology! This page focuses on the hows and whys of different traits and biological factors. Information specifically in reference to designing can be found in the trait guide.

ANATOMICAL TRAITS

Three major things make a mochibuns recognizable-- their animal features, the mochi near their animal ears, and the various flavors they can come in which can affect ear pattern and pupil shape. Mochibun aren’t fully rabbit or fully human. Originally they had bodies like regular rabbits on Earth, but evolved as a species to become more humanoid. This is attributed widely to the consumption of magical medicines, tonics, elixirs, etc accidentally created in the quest for an immortality elixir. Now they're something in between. Mochibuns aren’t necessarily demonic or spirit beings because they started out as ordinary rabbits. But they’re not powerful enough to be called gods or deities as a species either. Some believe that mochibuns evolved this way because of their love for Chang’E and a desire to be closer to her.

Rabbit and Human Forms

41792683_hYcvB0ElY0mEqbr.png
  • Mochibun have a combination of human and rabbit traits.
    • All mochibun are born with the ability to shapeshift between rabbit and human at will.
    • Most choose to be in a mostly human form with some rabbit characteristics.
      • Ex: Human for the most part, but has rabbit ears and tail.
      • Some prefer to have rabbit paws instead of human hands/feet!
  • Some mochibun may struggle with shapeshifting into humans, while others struggle with shapeshifting into rabbits.
    • For example, a family that has lived on the moon for several generations would have an easier time shapeshifting into humans, because they are used to pretending to be humans. A mochibun who lives on the moon and doesn't have to pretend to be a human constantly would have a harder time staying in full human form for long periods of time.
    • Shapeshifting is an ability that can be trained-- like building up muscle.
      • The ability to shapeshift is never lost. Shapeshifting is an ability that must be exercised regularly to be second nature. It’s like playing an instrument— a musician who practices every day plays better than one who practices once a week.
      • It's uncomfortable for a mochibun to hold a form they're not use to long term, and the amount of time it takes them to shapeshift is longer.
      • Those who don’t shapeshift often may find themselves stuck in that form.
  • They can be anthro/kenomo or fully feral.
    • Most mochibun like hanging out with humans or species similar to humans and are better with their human form over their rabbit form as a result. But there are a good number of mochibun who prefer their rabbit side and stay in a form that reflects that!
    • Many mochibun prefer a form closer to rabbit than human in early childhood.
  • They can shapeshift completely into a human.
    • However, it's most comfortable for them to have their rabbit ears/tail out!
      • Shapeshifting away their rabbit ears/tail is uncomfortable long term, a sensation of muscle cramping will start to happen.
    • In the more human/oid form, both human and rabbit ears can be present. Both ear sets are functional.
  • When they shapeshift into a rabbit, their ear pattern is still the same as their human/oid form and they cannot hide their daifuku.
    • Illusion magic or magical items can be used to hide the daifuku or make the ear patterns "disappear"! It just can't be done without external help.
  • Mochibuns cannot shapeshift into any other animal. They are only capable of using their shapeshifting on a scale of rabbit to human.
    • Hybrids and mochimonos are the only possible exceptions.
      • If a hybrid, mochibun's rabbit form may be very unique.
      • For mochimonos, they're a different animal than a rabbit and their feral forms reflect this.
    • Mochibuns can not shapeshift their face/body to resemble another individual.
      • External magical items, illusion magic or etc can be used for this purpose.
    • Mochibuns can not to shapeshift into objects.

Flavor

  • Mochi are the things that grow near a mochibun's rabbit ears.
    • They are a type of "fruit", called "mochi" primarily due to similarities in texture.
      • More specifically, they are similar to ponded "glutinous rice"-- and that's best known as "mochi" as well.
    • Mochibuns don't eat their own mochi or the mochi of others.
  • Mochi have filling inside of them.
    • Like daifuku, the mochi has a filling inside. Unlike daifuku, these flavors are not limited to only sweet ones. Since they have filling, mochi cannot be overly thin or hollow.
      • Ex: Can't look like antlers or tree branches.
  • Mochi have "flavor".
    • Different mochibun have one of several different "flavor types" that correspond with their ear color/patterns.
    • Mochi can actually taste like almost anything-- a strawberry flavor mochibun's mochi might taste like coffee, not strawberries.
      • Mochi usually taste like food items.
    • A famous mochibun anatomist in the past went to Earth and got hooked on daifuku and mochi. Because of their interest, they classified patterns as different flavors and likened mochi to daifuku...Their writings ended up sticking because they were the first one to document the subject.
  • Flavor is 100% cosmetic and mostly used as a way to differentiate between different mochibun rather than having any special specific meaning.
    • There are no proven benefits to having any specific flavor over another flavor.
    • However, some mochibuns strongly believe in flavor stereotypes-- having a certain flavor is like having a certain zodiac sign.
  • Flavor affects ear patterns, ear color, and sometimes, pupil shape.
    • Each flavor has a specific ear pattern and flavor pattern.
    • These special patterns show up as a result of the magic the mochibun has. Magic circulates through their bodies, making patterns appear.
    • Flavor ear patterns almost always show up. Pupils are not always affected by flavor.

Mochi

41792714_Wq7Hh7AmdzV0HPB.png
  • Mochi are the things that grow near a mochibun's rabbit ears!
    • They are a type of "fruit", called "mochi" primarily due to their similar textures.
      • More specifically, they are similar to ponded "glutinous rice"-- and that's best known as "mochi" as well.
      • They have dense magical energy-- if a human eats it, they get a significant energy boost.
  • Mochi take roughly a decade to fully mature.
    • It's is a bit like losing teeth for a human. You can become impatient and pull it off when you know it's almost time, but it's also just fine to wait for it to happen naturally. If it falls off on its own or near to when it's "ripe" then it won't hurt at all!
  • Mochi can be ruptured/torn.
    • If this happens, the mochi is best taken off prematurely. It is removed to prevent infection/etc. The mochi will then grow back normally.
    • Having "unripe" mochi damaged is roughly equivalent to getting a hangnail and accidentally ripping a part of your nail off. Pretty painful but no permanent damage!
  • Mochibuns don't eat their mochi.
    • They don't really gain anything from consuming mochi, so there's no reason to.
    • When used/consumed by a non-mochibun they can create a significant raw energy boost— but mochibuns are not affected.
      • It's theorized that because they grow mochi themselves they're "immune" to them.
      • With the mochibun established as a serious race, those who hunted them in the past no longer target the mochibun so boldly. These parties value the mochi because it still gives them a slight boost in power… opposed to eating a whole mochibun.
  • Mochi can have different unique patterns on them.
    • Mochi patterns are usually unique to the mochibun.
      • Some mochibun have the same patterns if they have the same flavor.
      • The most common patterns are dashes/"sprinkles".
    • Changing mochi pattern does require reapproval since mochi are a main species trait.
      • But doing so does not require an extra item to be purchased!
  • 3 star rank mochibun have spherical mochi, 2, 3, 4 and 5 star rank mochibun can have non-spherical mochi.
    • Unique shaped mochi happen because of "magical radiation".
      • 1, 2, 3 and 4 star rank mochibuns has a naturally higher eternal output of magic, which makes their mochi grow in unique shapes.
    • Hybrids can have mochi that are non-spherical no matter their star rank because their biologies are different from regular mochibun. Since the material is different, different shapes occur naturally as well.
      • Hybrids cannot be 3 star rank as a result.

Clouds

  • Some mochibun have clouds.
    • Due to a specific gene, some mochibuns automatically pull moisture and magic from the environment around them which turn into clouds.
    • Moisture in the air is needed to maintain clouds or they will evaporate.
  • Clouds can be any density/amount.
    • Amount and density is affected by the environment.
    • Some who don't want clouds use magic products to stop them from forming.
  • Clouds can produce weather.
    • Some buns naturally produce a surplus of energy/magic that results in the clouds producing rain, snow, lightning, etc.
    • Weather can change types depending on a variety of circumstances, like mood, ambient nature magic, or local weather conditions.
    • Weather does not occur 24/7, it is possible to "turn it off".
  • Clouds can be unique shapes and colors.
    • Clouds can be any color/amount of colors excluding black.
      • Only corrupted buns can have black clouds.
    • Some buns radiate magic on certain frequencies that result in the cloud they produce naturally forming distinct and recognizable shapes.
      • Requires Shaped Cloud add-on.
      • Can have "normal" AND a specific shape of cloud together.
      • Any number of shapes can be used.
        • Ex: Star AND heart shaped clouds.
      • Shaped clouds cannot resemble humans or specific individuals.
      • Clouds with faces or are shaped like animals are not alive and do not have sentience.
  • Adding, removing or changing cloud color will require reaaproval.
    • Doing so does not require a redesign item.
    • It is fine to portray a mochibun who has clouds without them, but the majority of their art/etc should have the clouds present.
    • Mochibun who do not have clouds on their Masterlist Entry should not be portrayed with clouds as a trait without approval.

Moons

  • Moons are formed by magic.
    • Moons are formed by the passive radiation of magic crystalizing and growing into objects big enough to orbit around the mochibun.
      • Moons naturally grow bigger over time.
    • Moons are crystalized magic. When crushed, they release great amounts of pure power.
    • Moons are spherical or crescent moon shaped. They cannot be any other shape.
  • This trait is exclusive to 1 and 5 star rank mochibun.
    • The moons take a lot of ambient magic to maintain-- 2, 3 and 4 star rank mochibun simply don't radiate enough.
    • It is possible for mochibun to "trade" or "gift" their moons to another!
      • This must be done out of free will or the moon won't "accept" their new owner and fall out of orbit.
    • Not all mochibun who can have moons have moons.
      • Moons can be destroyed/pushed out of orbit at the earliest signs of forming if they're undesirable to that individual.
      • Some simply don't have the ability to have moons due to their center of gravity being off-center or don't radiate enough magic.
  • Moons orbit the mochibun, they are not stationary.
    • Orbits are affected by mood, health, and magic in the environment.
    • Orbits can be as far as a meter away from the body.
    • Orbits can be intentionally altered, but doing so usually results in the moon falling out of orbit.
      • Losing a moon does not cause any physical harm or distress, there will be a feeling of heightened awareness to the loss for a few days.
  • A mochibun can have 1 to 5 moons.
    • 6+ moons have proven to be unsustainable, 5 is the maximum amount.
  • The largest moon a mochibun can have is the size of their head, the smallest, the size of a fist.
    • Any bigger and the moon would be too heavy to stay in orbit! But more importantly, it would be really annoying on a day-to-day basis.
  • Moons can be any color excluding black.
    • Only corrupted buns can have black moons.
  • Moons cannot be damaged/fragmented unless the mochibun is corrupted.
    • Damaged moons on an uncorrupted bun fall out of orbit. They won't have enough magic to sustain themselves.
    • Corrupted can have damaged moons because they output a significantly more amount of magic.

ABILITIES

Mochibun are a magical species-- but what type of magic they can do differs. Some mochibun are able to use magic outwardly to manipulate things around them (elemental magic, spells, etc). Other mochibun cannot use magic externally, but magic circulates throughout their bodies and gives them super strength. Most mochibun have both internal and external magic. Star rank is something used to measure a mochibun’s physical/magical potential, a measure of internal vs external magic ability. The higher the number, the stronger the magic manipulation ability. The lower the star rank, the stronger the mochibun’s body is.

Star Ranks

  • Mochibuns naturally absorb/produce magical energy. But how each mochibun processes magic is different, hence star ranks.
    • This ability was present in the mochibun ancestors that first came to the moon.
    • However, they weren't able to really develop their abilities/had notable magical abilities until Chang'E.
    • She taught them how to use magic and "failed" products from immortality elixir experiments were consumed by them, which gradually increased the natural magical abilities of the mochibun to what they are today.
  • Low star rank mochibun cannot "spellcast" but otherwise have supernatural abilities.
    • They are not able to use magic outside their bodies without the aid of magical items.
    • Low star rank mochibun have above average senses. Better vision, super strength, flexibility, endurance, speed, etc.
    • They can "channel" the magic in their bodies to strengthen certain senses over others.
      • Ex: A mochibun into running might be super fast at the expense of not being as strong as a mochibun who likes weight lifitng.
  • High star rank mochibun can "spellcast".
    • They emit magical energy and can use that magical energy to do different things.
      • Cast spells, manipulate elements, manipulate objects around them, etc.
      • Whatever you're thinking of-- if it's "magic", it's possible!
  • Notably, higher star rank mochibun have weaker bodies and lower star rank mochibun have more durable bodies.
    • Because high star mochibun magic is external and radiates outwardly, little if any magic circulates around their bodies strengthening them.
      • A 5 star mochibun is equivalent to a human with less than average health.
      • High star rank mochibun are at a greater risk of getting sick and having other health conditions.
    • Lower star rank mochibun have extremely tough bodies on the other hand because all their magic circulates their bodies instead of being emitted from them.
      • Low star mochibun have exellent immune systems and very rarely get sick-- they also heal much quicker from injuries.
  • Star rank does impact the type of education and occupation a mochibun receives.
    • Circulating magic in one's body is different than learning how to cast spells. mochibun have a lot of magic-- and untrained magic users is a recipe for disaster. There are special schools/tutors for certain star ranks, but even public schools have specialized classes depending on the mochibun's star rank.
    • There is also a notable amount of private tutors, special classes and other organizations that focus on special/specific education for mochibun students and children since most schools are for all star ranks.
    • Certain star ranks are desired for certain fields as well.
      • Ex: Magical research likes high star rank mochibun for spellcasting.
      • Ex: Artisan fields like blacksmithing and carpentry prioritize low star rank mochibun for their enhanced senses.
    • While there isn’t anything stopping a lower rank mochibun from going into medicine or a higher rank mochibun from becoming a soldier, it's considered unusual. The mochibun in the "wrong" field would struggle to keep up with their peers, so there is stigma.
  • In mochibun society, there is an equal chance for low and high star ranks to be well respected.
    • There are plenty of high and low star rank families in the upper class.
    • It is possible for high star rank parents to have a low star rank child or low star rank parents to have a high star rank child.
      • Children do tend to be of similar star rank to their parents though, because of genetics.
      • If a 5 or 1 star rank mochibun has a child with an average human, their child is most likely to be 3 star rank because "not as much magic is passed down to that child".
  • Unfortunately, some prejudices do exist.
    • Some believe higher star rank mochibun are superior because of their magical power.
      • This isn’t necessarily true— it’s a remnant of mochibun society when they were still being hunted. Higher star rank mochibun were targeted more often, so their status got elevated during that time because of the emphasis on their protection.
      • But it’s been proven that higher star rank mochibun aren’t superior to lower star ranks, just that they have a different advantage.
    • Others believe that lower star ranks are the best.
      • They argue that because they have stronger bodies and more physical strength, they’re the ones that will survive over high star ranks so they're better. Of course, this is also an extremist view.
    • Star ranks of all levels get along just fine! They just have different abilities and strengths. In the modern era, there is less prejudice based on star rank.

Magical and Physical Abilities

  • The magic high star rank mochibun have isn’t specific to any one discipline.
    • High star mochibun have to pick a specific field of magic they want to go into and train in that field!
    • They train by constant practice of spells and learning magical theory. If they don't train, they won't be as strong.
      • Like a musician, they constantly have to practice or they won't have the ability.
  • High star rank families usually have an affinity to a certain type of magic.
    • Most established high star rank families get known for certain things.
      • Ex: A family gets known for good manipulation over fire and doing fire magic.
      • Ex: A family gets known for their skills with agricultural spells.
    • This doesn’t mean the family members are limited to only that type of magic, just that members born into those families usually have abilities matching their parents'.
  • Physical training for low star rank mochibun involves a lot of exercises, meditation, martial arts and etc.
    • Mental discipline is very important. A toddler with the ability to punch through walls will have some very nasty tantrums!
    • Some of the craters on the moon have even been made by certain mochibun.
      • It’s almost a bit of a rite of passage— if a mochibun can create a massive crater, they go down in history as a legend.
  • Low star rank families usually pass down a specialty trait as well.
    • Ex: A family of famous blacksmiths passes down a certain level of fire resistance and upper body strength to their descendants.
    • Ex: A family of craftsmen passes down excellent eyesight and dexterity in the hands.
  • For the most part, mochibun do “light magic”; magic that’s meant to help others.
    • In the case of low star rank mochibun, they focus their magic on enhancing senses in nonlethal capacities.
    • But there are some who use “dark magic”; like manipulating others or strengthening themselves using taboo methods.
    • These types of magic are criminalized and any mochibun found practicing dark magic is severely punished. Still, every now and then there’s a story in the news of a mochibun doing something bad…
PHYSICAL ABILITY

Star RankSkill Level
1 starAble to lift mountains, can survive jumping out of a plane without a parachute.
2 starCan shatter a bolder with a punch, won't get bruised if you drop a concrete block on their foot.
3 starAble to bench press an elephant, most likely won't get sick by staying out in the rain.
4 starMight be able to bend a spoon barehanded, will break a bone from falling off a three-story building.
5 starHas the strength of an average human, gets sick much more easily/frequently than any other rank.

MAGICAL ABILITY

Star RankSkill Level
1 starMight be able to small spark after years of practice, but it's much easier to buy a lighter.
2 starCan sometimes make it rain if it's already super cloudy, but can't if it's sunny.
3 starAble to use basic elemental magic at will, like directing wind currents to make themself fly.
4 starCan use magic to grow a massive tree in a week, able to create magical golems to carry out basic tasks.
5 starCapable of making a portal from the moon to earth or regrowing someone's severed limb if they know what they're doing.

AGE AND GROWTH

Unlike rabbits and humans, mochibun lifespans are a great deal longer due to magic and biology. They grow slower and live longer. 1 year for a mochibun is equal to 2 years for a human. A 100-year-old mochibun is equivalent to a 50-year-old human. To calculate your mochibun’s human age, double what they would be as a human!

Development/Youth

While the biological growth of a mochibun is slow compared to a human, their mental abilities keep up. A 18-year-old mochibun is just as smart as an 18 year old human despite having the physical appearance of a 9 year old human. That’s why mochibuns rarely go to human schools under the university and college level. What’s being taught for their human equivalent age level are things they have already learned.

The majority of mochibun children on Earth are sent to the Moon for boarding school, schools catering to supernatural beings on Earth, or homeschooled. Mochibun schools are longer than human schools, but give much more comprehensive educations. More time is dedicated to learning, so when mochibun graduate their equivalent of high school they’re on par with humans who have doctorate degrees.

In the very rare case of a mochibun orphan being on Earth alone, any adult mochibun who comes across them will immediately help them get to the Moon. Or, if they don’t want to leave earth, get them in touch with a local trustworthy supernatural being. Of course, this does depend very much on the one finding them being a good person...

Adulthood

Mochibun are only considered adults at 40 years old, which is 20 years old for a human. If one wants to leave the Moon without an adult family member, one must be 40 and have a special travel certification. In order to get the certification, many classes must be taken about Earth etiquette.

Puberty for mochibuns isn’t as hellish as it is for humans. While buns still have to go through the pains and embarrassments of acne, cracking voices and growth spurts, all the symptoms are spread out over more years. And since it lasts longer, the effects are more gradual— and less noticeable.

But the biological magical maturity and mastery over magical abilities is what made the mochibun decide to make 40 the age for adulthood.

Their bodies may physically resemble adults much sooner than they hit 50-- it does depend on their personal genetics-- but the magic systems in their bodies take about 40 years to develop fully. While juvenile mochibun can use magic freely and actively train themselves with it before they hit 40, the potential of their magic isn’t fully met until then. After 40, a mochibun cannot get anymore “growth spurts”. They are deemed competent enough with using their abilities that they won’t cause any major problems on their own. There are countless incidents where younger buns have had their magic go haywire.

Old Age

While old age is inescapable, a lot of magical products exist to reduce the effects of aging. There aren’t many senior citizens who look their age. Most who would be 80+ in human years appear to be in their 50's-- despite being 200. Since the biological aging process is spread out over multiple years, it’s easy for mochibun to get a head start on using stuff like wrinkle creams and backache prevention. There’s also, of course, illusion magic and related items for especially vain buns.

The average maximum life expectancy is 250 for mochibun. This is for all star ranks of mochibun. Some mochibun might live a bit longer or shorter, but there aren't any instances of mochibun naturally living over 300.

There are circumstances where some get cursed or blessed to live longer, have magical items that increase lifespan, or otherwise extend their lifespan with other methods. Some hybrids even have extended life spans because of godly or otherwise supernatural parents. Immortal buns can exist, but it’s very much not a common happenstance.

Expedited Age

There are certain places on the moon where time is sped up. Temporally altered spaces are very time-consuming to set up and take up a lot of resources. Multiple high star ranking mochibun who specialize in space-time magic have to come together to set up a single room. Many things can also go wrong in the process. But these spaces extremely useful for multiple groups of mochibun. Temporally altered spaces are primarily used for educational, governmental, and scientific reasons.

Some of the most prestigious universities and higher learning institutions on the moon have areas where time is sped up in order to help students study more. These areas usually have a time sped up by a half; places where 1 year is equivalent to 2 years.

Governmental institutions where time is sped up are meeting places like debate chambers. Sometimes arguing over new bills takes so long that the government decided it would be best to have meeting chambers where the time went faster. Those places usually have a 1 year = 2 year time ratio as well.

Many experiments require years to complete-- especially ones concerning medicine. A lot of high-class scientific research buildings have areas where time is sped up. Many buildings have multiple chambers where time is sped up or slowed down at certain rates.

Mochibun who spend time in the sped-up time zones will age faster. If a researcher spends 1 year in a place time has sped up conducting an experiment, multiple years can have passed when they emerge!

There is also the probability of these places malfunctioning. Major institutions that have expedited time areas constantly get maintenance done on them. But private citizens who have such places usually can't afford to spend too much effort on maintaining the spaces in peak condition. There have been instances where mochibun have been stuck in temporal spaces and 100 years have gone by in the span of a day, or time was actually slowed down instead of sped up. In one case, a temporally altered space completely disappeared and everyone in it vanished as well.

BASIC HEALTH

It comes as no surprise that mochibun as a species have advanced medical technology. During the search for the elixir of immortal life, many medicines and cures were discovered by accident. With a cultural emphasis on science and medicine, mochibun are a rather hygienic and health-conscious species.

General Health

Human illnesses and diseases don’t really affect mochibun. Because they have magic, their immune systems easily overpower any bacteria or viruses they may have come into contact with from a human. Their bodies also naturally run at a higher temperature.

Low star ranking mochibun are almost completely immune to human viruses because of their naturally excellent physical conditions. High star rank mochibun have frailer bodies because their magic doesn’t naturally strengthen their bodies, so they are affected by human viruses. Higher star rank mochibun might experience a mild fever if they come into contact with human sickness, even if they don't fully experience all the symptoms a human would. mochibun with human bloodlines may experience more effects from viruses, as well as mochibun who have otherwise unusual conditions. But for the most part, mochibun aren’t affected by any human disease like a human would be.

However, mochibun do have their own versions of the common cold, flu, and more. It is, however, rare for there to be any major outbreak. mochibun are a rather clean species and the vast majority of mochibun are very hygienic. Because of magic, spells or items can easily be used to sanitize/clean things as well. Of course, most magic cleaning and sanitation products are on the Moon. mochibun on Earth tend to use human cleaning supplies for their needs over magical ones due to accessibility.

Mochibun illnesses are rather self-contained. Normal humans can’t get sick from a mochibun illness because the majority of mochibun illnesses are magic related magic. Viruses that really affect mochibun always relate to magical consumption, corruption, or both. Since humans don’t have magic, the bacteria or virus that affect a mochibun wouldn’t be able to survive in the average human's immune system. Of course, humans who use magic may potentially be affected. But the majority of mochibun viruses only affect mochibun and no other species.

Genetically caused health issues are pretty uncommon for mochibun. If a mochibun has some genetic abnormality, it’s usually because of a non-mochibun parent/bloodline. For example, an aquatic hybrid mochibun might have difficulties breathing/moving out of the water. Or a mochibun who had a vampire ancestor in the distant past might have difficulties with sunlight-- even if they’re one star rank mochibun who should have an extremely durable body.

Medicine & Treatments

The majority of mochibun made medicines are either in pill or paste form. Pills that are taken orally, and pastes that are applied to wounds or other irregularities. Minor wounds, like a scraped knee, can be healed within an hour with over-the-counter healing paste. If the same medicine is applied to a human or other non-magical mortal being, it’s actually much less time. Since humans aren't magic, they don't have any magic resistance to mochibun medicines which means the medicines are more effective.

Human medicines do work on normal mochibuns if they’re in a kenomimi or human form. In an anthro or feral form, veterinarian-grade medicine actually works. But the dose of any non-mochibun medicine must be at least double for it to affect the mochibun properly. While mochibun look like humans and have similar biology to humans, it's very important to remember that they’re not humans. Some hybrid or otherwise genetically abnormal mochibun might not be affected by human medicine at all because their body types are just too different. As a side note, human alcohol and drugs also need higher amounts than normal for the mochibun to feel any effects.

Even drug store and over-the-counter medicines from mochibun society are very advanced by human standards. It’s because of the magic that’s used. A lot of mochibun medicines use magic plants or have spellwork. For example, there’s a burn paste that uses a magical variant of aloe and has cooling spells/enchantments.

Treatments for conditions are also magical. For example, it’s not impossible for a mochibun to develop some sort of cancer. There’s a mochibun treatment for cancer using magic to identify, isolate and kill the individual cancerous cells. Or for mochibun needing physical therapy, a regime of muscle tissue strengthening spells might be worked in. mochibun have some of the most advanced medical practices out of any supernatural species. Other supernatural beings tend to go to mochibun dominant hospitals when they can for any major issues.

It’s because the treatments are so magic intensive that even the most bleeding heart mochibun don't want to reveal the technology to the entire human world. Revealing oneself as magic to a very close human friend or lover is one thing, but exposing their entire species and the supernatural world to humanity...any mochibun who did something like that would become a sinner to their race. They would become the subject of experimentation and scrutiny from the human race and public enemy number one to everyone else in the supernatural community.

The magical component of mochibun medicine is why it’s taboo to sell and market to humans. If an average human who was chemically savvy got a hold of a mochibun medicine and performed some experiments to find out what it's made of...well, there would be a disaster. The mochibun are a part of the general supernatural community on Earth-- and everyone at the top agrees that magic shouldn't be totally revealed to the human public. Of course, that hasn’t stopped some mochibun from using mochibun medicine on human close friends/lovers. But it’s still a very uncommon occurrence and something that a mochibun can be prosecuted for if done in excess.

CONDITIONS

Despite the significant accomplishments of mochibun medicine, there are some conditions that nobody has been able to find a cure for. These conditions come from a variety of different circumstances, but all are conditions that can’t be effectively treated. Measures can be taken to make these conditions less of a hazard in day to day life, but no cures exist. Mochibun with these conditions aren’t legally discriminated against, but there is some stigma and prejudice against those with these conditions in mochibun society. Because it’s unknown how the majority of these conditions are gained, some refuse to interact with someone with a condition out of fear. Most mochibun with a condition have an easier time living on Earth, especially if they don’t have any family members on the Moon. Below, you can read about the current major conditions a mochibun can get. See the marketplace for prices if you want to add one to one of your mochibun!

Nomochi

This is a condition where a mochibun is unable to grow new mochi. A mochibun can get this condition for a variety of different reasons.

Mochi are grown because of magic circulation in the head and through the rabbit ears. The magic naturally pools in that area for the average mochibun, which results in mochi being grown. A surplus of magic results in unique shaped mochi for higher star rank mochibun. However, some mochibun have been unable to grow any mochi from birth. Due to some genetic shortcoming or birthing defect, they were born with poor magic circulation around their ears; so not enough magic is in that area to sustain mochi growth. Other mochibun may have been born with lower than normal magical circulation around the ears, and later in life, the amount of magic in circulation dropped below the amount needed to support mochi growth.

Another reason for this condition is trauma. A mochibun might receive a head injury, or suffer an attack that reduces their magical circulation. Either event has the potential to damage the flow of magical circulation around the head and therefore affect the ability of the mochibun to grow new mochi. A third possible reason for this condition is that magical circulation might intentionally be cut off in order to treat some injury. Sometimes mochi starts to rot/grow in defective ways, so mochibuns have operations to intentionally remove their mochi growing ability. It’s not uncommon to see those without mochi since it’s natural for a mochibun to have plucked their mochi or had them detach from being “ripe”-- mochi always takes a bit of time to grow back normally. But to have clearly unhealthy or damaged mochi is considered to be uncultured, impolite, and unhygienic. It’s something that generally makes a mochibun less attractive to other mochibun, like seeing a human who clearly doesn't wash their hair.

Those with this condition aren't really considered abnormal or heavily discriminated against. But most with this condition have inferiority complexes about not being able to grow mochi, especially if the reason was genetics. There are some Nomochi mochibun who will attach the mochi from other mochibun to their heads-- but the mochi of others have different signature magic which reacts badly to theirs. Using others' mochi or even fake mochi is only a short-term or subpar fix. There are those who embrace not having mochi with pride though, notably low star rank mochibuns who gained this condition from a battle injury.

Eye Plague

This is a rather mysterious condition-- mochibun just suddenly gets it without warning. Research has been done, but researchers found that there was no real common circumstance shared by all who have gotten this illness.

There is a normal form of this illness and an advanced form. In the standard form of this disease, mochibun have various eyes on their bodies, but the eyes look rather normal even if the scleras of the eyes are unnatural colors. With the advanced form, the eyes are notably mutated, with multiple pupils or several eyes combined together. Those with the advanced form don’t necessarily have more eyes on their bodies than those with the standard form of eye plague, the eyes are just notably mutated and otherwise abnormal.

Actually, this disease is one of the most socially stigmatized. Multiple eyes have always been associated with corruption. Most believe Eye Plague has something to do with the Dark Emperor. This hasn’t been proven, but nobody can disprove a relation either. It got its name as a "Plague" primarily because of the stigmatization around it. While it's generally benign, it is rather inconvenient.

Overgrown

A condition relating to nature, those with this condition have plant growth from their bodies. Plants either grow internally or externally from their flesh.

Plants grown from their flesh have expedited growth rates. The plants don’t damage the mochibun or cause them pain by growing. But mochibun can be harmed by the plants, like ones with thorns or ones that are poisonous. Hurting the plants won’t hurt the mochibun, but pulling out the roots from their skin will. The growth of the plants is draining on the mochibun's energy-- those with this condition tend to consume more food and require nutrition supplements to stay in peak health.

The plants grown have similar properties to those of the same species grown naturally. But it’s highly recommended not to use any in medicine or to otherwise consume them. There's no real consequence to doing so, but something always feels a bit off about the plants grown from their bodies, so it’s better not to even consider it. After leaving the host’s body, the plants die rapidly no matter what's done. They also cannot be bred with other plants.

This condition has a normal form and an advanced form. With the normal form, only a few different types of plants grow, usually only one. In comparison, multiple plants including magical plants may be growing-- or even dead or dried plants may keep appearing despite not seemingly alive. Overall, this condition is not really that stigmatized by the mochibun society. This condition is one of the most aesthetically pleasing conditions and many with this condition have gone into modeling. Those who are in medicine also find this condition very interesting and helpful as well. While this is still considered an undesirable disease, fewer mochibun are scared by it because it’s better publicized.

Rotting

An undesirable condition where the flesh rots despite the mochibun being alive. This condition is thought to be related to necromancy, but no actual evidence for this claim has been found. Body parts may fall off and have to be stitched back together. This condition has a standard and advanced form-- in the advanced form, flesh even melts off the body in places in a slow drip. This disease also randomly occurs-- one day, the mochibun just wakes up with it. However, it’s been noticed that the majority of those with this condition are adults.

Mochibuns are able to live their lives normally for the most part, it’s just that their body parts get detached very easily. Most mochibun with this condition always carry around a sewing kit as a result. They don’t really feel pain-- in fact, the sense of touch for these mochibun is considerably dulled. It’s not unusual for a body part to drop off one of these mochibun and they don’t notice until later on. Rotting mochibun notably don't bleed. Or at least, any blood they have is like a paste rather than a liquid. Less food and drink is consumed by mochibun with this condition as well, though they're still able to eat until their digestive system stops working.

Those with this condition tend to have a shorter life span because their bodies eventually just fail them. It's not just muscle tissue that rots-- eventually, the digestive system and nerve systems stop working as well. Even though they're able to live as their flesh rots, they still need their vital support systems to work. When their nerve system shuts down, their brain shuts down and nothing can be done.

Actually, this condition doesn’t have too much stigma. Those who have this condition are considered very interesting by the medical community and they’re obsessively researched over. Of course, many mochibun refuse to interact with rotting mochibun out of fear, thinking they’ll get the condition too by making contact. But since the medical community is so prominent in the mochibun community, most mochibun are curious on an intellectual level about those with this condition. This does, unfortunately, lead to some treatment of rotting mochibun as test subjects over fellow mochibun though.

Crystalline

A condition where blood and tears solidify into minerals/crystals after being exposed to oxygen after around 3-10 seconds. Other body fluids are not affected. The type of crystal can be any precious stone and must be something that can be found in nature and cannot be radioactive. The type of crystal depends on the mochibun's mood, diet, genetics, environment, etc. Occasionally, the mochibun has to hack up chunks of crystal if the condition is particularly advanced.

This is actually a rather popular condition, given that the atomic structures of the crystals are not different from naturally formed crystals. Since the crystals produced are not much different from natural ones, those with this condition can easily become quite rich. There are stipulations in the mochibun economy that prevent inflation from buying things created from crystalline, but on Earth in the human world, no such protections exist. This condition can also be quite aesthetically pleasing besides being monetarily useful. However, this can also be detrimental as there have been multiple cases where those with this condition have gotten kidnapped and forced into versions of slavery.

It is important to note that the more this condition is triggered, the more advanced the condition becomes. Blood and tears become start crystalizing faster and faster the more they are shed. In advanced stages of this condition, it can become very dangerous-- the blood in the body can start to crystallize without being exposed to air outside of the mochibun's body leading to a variety of different health issues. Tear ducts may become completely crystallized, leading to eye issues as well. Some patches may form under the skin of the crystal and veins may be visibly discolored from the presence of the crystal. This is one of the most fatal conditions to have-- one may be able to live in luxury with this condition, but not as long as they would have without.

REPRODUCTION

TRIGGER WARNING: discussions of procreation including mentions of reproductive systems and genitals

Mochibun can have kids through intercourse or a species-specific method.

  • Being mammalian, mochibun can have children the same way humans do.
    • Sperm fertilizes an egg and a child develops.
      • The majority of mochibun have mammalian biology; mochibun are typically born with a uterus and ovaries or penis and testicles.
      • Children can be created through sex. Other options such as surrogacy, artificial insemination, etc are also available to mochibun couples.
      • Hybrid mochibun may have alternate reproductive systems; for example, a bird hybrid may have a cloaca.
    • Mochibun are capable of producing offspring through sex with species that have compatible biology as well.
      • Humans and mochibun can produce offspring. The child will take after the mochibun parent more than the human parent because the mochibun gene is much stronger than the human gene in determining species.
    • Some same sex couples use magic to physically alter one of the parent’s reproductive systems so a baby can be created “traditionally”.
      • Male pregnancy and female insemination are possible if their biology is modified accordingly.
      • This would be a temporary transformation vs a permanent one.
        • Regular shapeshifting is only for changing species and does not include changing sex characteristics Therefore, additional magic must be used.
        • Magic used to alter biology is difficult and things can go very wrong. This is not a decision that is made lightly.
  • Mochibun have a low birth rate and long gestation period despite their rabbit roots.
    • Because mochibun live longer and their bodies age more slowly, the growth rate in utero is also slow.
    • Pregnancy for a mochibun/mochibun baby can take from over 1-3 years/12-36 months.
      • Pregnancy length varies depending on parents' genetics and pregnant parent's health.
      • The length of time for gestation is random, but some believe it relates to the baby's potential— with longer gestation meaning that the mochibun will be more magical or stronger than others born of the same star rank who were gestated for less time. This hasn't been scientifically proven, but it hasn't been disproven either.
    • Pregnancy length will be shorter if one parent is a species with a shorter gestation length.
      • Ex: Mochibun/human pregnancy = longer than 9 months but shorter than 12 months.
    • Things can be done to speed up development in utero, but speeding up time too much can result in issues with the baby's development.
  • Another way mochibun can have children is through "hatching", the egg method.
    • First, the couple stockpiles their mochi together over time.
    • The mochi from both parents combined together to create an "egg" on an auspicious day.
      • The more mochi used, the higher chance of success!
      • If the mochi have defects/etc, there is a chance something may go wrong during development and the child will suffer later on.
      • Corrupted mochibun's mochi can't be used for this method because they're poisonous.
      • Hybrid mochi can be used mostly, but some are incompatible with this method due to their material.
    • The egg is kept in a safe location by the parents, and must constantly and consistently be fed magic by both parents.
      • If it naturally falls apart within the time span of one year, the material becomes regular waste.
      • But it remains round and starts to radiate heat, it was a success!
    • The egg must be protected and watched over at a safe location until hatching, with the parents consistently nurturing it.
      • A lack of attention and magical flow will result in issues with development.
      • Since it’s a rather mechanical process, couples in the same circle often plan to have their kids at the same time using this method.
    • Fully and partially corrupted mochibuns cannot use this method to reproduce due to their mochi being toxic.
      • Because their mochi is poisonous and harmful when consumed, it's impossible to create a new healthy being with them.
      • Corrupted mochibuns can still have children through intercourse.
  • The egg method takes from 1-5 years/12-60 months.
    • Most couples will use places where time is sped up for eggs so the child comes faster or places that are more magically dense to speed up development.
      • However, these places are rather exclusive to the moon so mochibun couples on earth or elsewhere will not really have access to them.
      • Places with more magical density are preferred, as the egg is able to absorb more magic and the baby develops faster.
      • In low magic environments, the egg tends to take 4-5 months to fully develop.
      • Time can't be sped too much or there will be issues with development.
  • More conditions for the egg method exist and it does have a few more limits.
    • Multiple children like twins cannot be born from the same egg.
    • If an egg is damaged during gestation, the baby may be born with a disability, like blindness.
      • In some cases, damage to the egg has resulted in premature births or the loss of shapeshifting ability.
      • Most things can be compensated with medicine/treatments, but there are some things that can’t be truly fixed.
    • Couples where one of the parents isn't a mochibun can't use this method.
  • However, the egg method is still somewhat popular.
    • It's convenient because nobody's body has to change due to pregnancy.
    • It can be much easier for mochibun same sex couples to have children with this method if they don't want a surrogate, since biologically altering magic is very complex and many things can go wrong with it.
  • Newborns can be completely rabbit, human, or a mixture of both characteristics.
    • The amount of rabbit characteristics is influenced directly by the forms of the parents and what forms they take.
    • mochibun babies are more similar to human babies than rabbit babies.
      • But most children prefer more rabbit forms since it’s easier to hop/crawl than walk.
  • The majority of births are done on the moon.
    • Even if the parents live on Earth/don't like the Moon, the Moon is the best place safety-wise.
    • Since there are so many corrupted, cult, etc are on Earth, it's riskier to have the child on Earth while parents are weakened or otherwise distracted.
    • Many children will spend their first decade on the Moon as well, for increased safety.
