Kokuhaku Akaboji (紅星黒白 Akaboshi Kokuhaku) is a major character in Corpse Party: Forbidden Rebirth. She is a student of Misato Municipal Brotherhood High's classroom 2-4, and a victim of Heavenly Host Elementary School.

Kokuhaku is the main protagonist of the game’s introduction, as well as a playable character in TRUE END, a main character in REVERSE END, a supporting character in GOOD END and BAD END, and the false deurotagonist of LOST END.

Kokuhaku is the only student from Misato Municipal Brotherhood High to appear in Corpse Party: Blood Covered and its' subsequent remakes. Her official profile can be viewed here.

Design

Kokuhaku is a teenage girl of average height and slim build, with grayish-hazel eyes, thin eyebrows and periwinkle blue coloured hair. She has pale, cream-coloured skin and almond shaped eyes. Her bangs are straight cut and parted in the middle, and her hair reaches midway down her back.

Her fall school uniform consists of a prussian blue sailor fuku with a white tie, along with a small clasp bearing the emblem for Misato Municipal Brotherhood High. Her prussian blue skirt reaches to her knees, and she wears plain white knee high socks and brown loafers along with it. Her uniform hasn't had any alterations made to it.

Her casual fall outfit consists of a brown pinafore dress with a light brown diamond pattern, layered overtop of a plain white button-up blouse. With this, she wears black tights along with a pair of dark brown ankle boots with a buckle around the ankles. Beneath the collar of the blouse, she wears a thin black ribbon tied in a bow.

"Her style: Formal, academia, traditional, preppy, simple. Light, neutral colours, whites, creams, beiges, browns, light blues, light pink and navy accents. Cats, flowers, plum blossoms, deer, plaid and tartan patterns. Pinafores, blouses, sailor dresses, button-ups, knee-length plaid skirts, occasional patterned shorts, Mary Janes and loafers, tights and knee-high socks, berets, small ribbons and neckties to accessorize. She hardly lets any skin on her legs show when wearing a skirt, even with her nightgown. In contrast to her simple outfits, her kimono and yukata are extremely elegant and detailed, each with an accompanying expensive obi and obidome."

Personality

Kokuhaku is a bright and reserved student from Misato Municipal Brotherhood High's class 2-4. She’s intensely dedicated to her studies and holds top ranks in her grade, an achievement she takes great pride in. A natural introvert who prefers to be alone most of the time, she can often be found reading or studying under the large tree in the corner of her backyard garden. Her home is a sprawling, prestigious kendo dojo located near Misato’s oldest shrine, and her family has lived there and maintained it for eight generations.

Even as a child, Kokuhaku was always very withdrawn and quiet, and she’s had difficulty making friends throughout her whole life. Though she has a very elegant writing style, when it comes to speaking, her words often come out much more bluntly than she intended them to. This, combined with her tone and facial expressions often not matching her words, has made it very hard for her to truly connect with those around her. Despite this, there are a select few (such as Tomoe Mizuki and Ken Fujii) who have seen past her issues with communication and befriended her anyways, to which she’s very thankful and loyal towards them.

As intelligent as she is, Kokuhaku had a very sheltered upbringing - her mother has raised her to act as a traditional Japanese woman for her entire life, the same way that she herself was brought up. Because of this, Kokuhaku had a lot of pressure on her from a young age to act ladylike and submissive, obey her parents, and understand how to cook and care for her future husband. Not only has this led to a lot of emotional repression, but she also has little to no street smarts, and often falls victim to con artists and door-to-door salesmen looking to prey upon her.

Even with the amount of weight placed on her shoulders by her parents, she has an extremely high passion for kendo and secretly yearns to be a disciple herself. Though she will unquestionably be the one to inherit the dojo, it’s expected that she’ll entrust the power over it to her future husband, as a sort of wedding dowry. Deep down though, Kokuhaku wishes to become the head of the dojo herself when she gets married, and tries desperately to win the respect and approval of her stoic father on a daily basis.

Kokuhaku holds very strong spiritual beliefs, especially when it comes to shrines, prayers and charms. The concept of karma is very important to her - any good deeds that others do for her, she won’t rest until she’s repaid them in full. Likewise, she believes that any bad deeds done unto her will undoubtedly be repaid to the individual through karma. She takes her beliefs very seriously and will honour the requests of those who have helped her no matter what.

Despite having hardened her spirit through swordsmanship, she’s terrified of the dark and ghosts to the point of suffering panic attacks. Tomoe loves to tease her about this, though she’s extremely embarrassed of it and considers the fear childish. She will go to great lengths to ensure others don’t find out about it, even attempting to brave the fears to save her own pride.

Plot

Backstory
Kokuhaku is the first-born child of Junichi and Harumi Akaboji. The Akaboji family is one steeped in tradition and spirituality, and the members of it are considered extremely important within the town - Misato itself was built around the famed Akaboji Shrine, and Kokuhaku’s father is the head of the Akaboji Dojo, the most prestigious kendo dojo in the region. According to historical legend, if one is permitted to train within the dojo and gives proper thanks at the shrine before a tournament, their victory is guaranteed. In order to maintain the sanctity of the Akaboji bloodline, every marriage is pre-planned decades in advance - any woman who is to be married into the family must undergo a thorough evaluation by all surviving family members, involving an analysis of their bloodline, family history, financial status, and more. Once a woman has been chosen, she is to be wed to the Akaboji man once he has attained the rank of Nanadan at the age of 35. While the dojo was managed by the husband, the shrine was to be maintained by the woman of the family, requiring her to learn ceremonial dances and perform purification rituals among other things. Additionally, a couple is only permitted to have one child, in order to prevent any sort of dispute or infighting within the family regarding the inheritance of the land.

Since the shrine was constructed seven generations ago, the woman wed into the Akaboji family has always given birth to a boy, and it was considered God’s blessing to provide the family with a male and keep the Akaboji bloodline strong as thanks for the time and care they put into maintaining the shrine. Kokuhaku was the first girl to be born into the Akaboji family in over 200 years, something which brought her parents (particularly her mother) a great deal of shame. Harumi thoroughly considered the idea of abandoning Kokuhaku somewhere she wouldn’t be found and claiming there had been an accident during childbirth when asked by the older members of the Akaboji family, but Junichi ultimately talked her down from this. In the end, it was decided that they would raise Kokuhaku as a perfect Japanese woman, teaching her to be submissive and faithful in order to nurture the man they would carefully select to inherit the Akaboji Dojo. The dojo itself would be considered part of her dowry in order to make her more attractive to her potential husband, and she would go on to give birth to the next Akaboji man to carry on the bloodline, whether she wanted to or not.

Although this plan was ultimately accepted by the elders of the family, Kokuhaku’s parents still received much disapproval from her grandparents and great-grandparents. In particular, her mother was especially shunned for being unable to give birth to a boy, and was often told that they regretted accepting her into the Akaboji family at all. Struggling between the tension in the family and micromanaging Kokuhaku’s development, Harumi hatched another plan - despite the fact it went against the traditions of the family, if they tried again for a boy, they could forget all about the stress of raising Kokuhaku to be perfect and turn their attention towards the true heir of the dojo, rather than the girl they planned to sell off years down the road. Just over two years after Kokuhaku was born, her mother gave birth again to a second child. Much to her horror, this child was also born a girl.

Now having broken two long standing traditions of the Akaboji family, Harumi was shut out even more by the elders, and she grew to resent the second child, Miyuki, even more than Kokuhaku. She viewed her as the final straw that had destroyed her ties to the family she’d worked so hard to be accepted into, and decided to instead push the responsibility of raising Miyuki onto Kokuhaku’s grandmother. In order to maintain the traditions in the slightest way possible, it was decided that Miyuki would be the one to inherit the Akaboji Shrine, though she would be prohibited from marrying or having children in order to preserve the bloodline.

Though they lived in the same house, having two different guardians caused Kokuhaku and Miyuki to have extremely different upbringings. Since she was a child, Harumi has micromanaged every single thing Kokuhaku did - she was obligated to cook and clean alongside her every day, study for hours upon hours until her mother was satisfied, and care for her father at the end of the day among other things. She wasn’t permitted access to the dojo unless it was to bring her father something, in order to limit her exposure to kendo and manipulate her to be more willing to part with the dojo itself.

Despite this, Kokuhaku often went against her mother’s wishes when it came to kendo. As a child, she often snuck into the training rooms to watch disciples train, and was deeply fascinated and passionate about the sport even at such a young age. When she was seven, she dressed herself in training robes and donned a bamboo sword to secretly play along with the other disciples in a bit of harmless fun. However, she let her guard down a bit too much and was caught by her mother, who struck her multiple times in the head and yelled at her to remove the clothes immediately. This incident deeply affected Kokuhaku as a person, and although she continued to go along with her mother’s management plan, she also became more sneaky and found different ways of getting into the training rooms in ways that wouldn’t get her caught.

Though Junichi is extremely distant with both Akaboji children, Kokuhaku highly respects him as head of the dojo, and secretly yearns for his approval and permission to inherit the dojo directly from him, instead of having to give it to the man they choose for her to marry. She has no desire to be “sold off like livestock”, and she deeply resents her mother for not being more sympathetic of her situation - especially due to the fact that Harumi is both a woman and an outsider to the Akaboji family, she’d expected her to have a bit more of an understanding of how difficult of a position she’s in.

Though they practically live in different worlds, Kokuhaku and Miyuki are actually quite close as siblings. Their different personalities allow them to mesh well together - Kokuhaku knows when to be serious and strict with Miyuki, and Miyuki knows when she needs to tell Kokuhaku to relax and stop overworking herself. Although they're kind to each other most of the time, that doesn't stop Miyuki from teasing Kokuhaku about whatever she can come up with.

Due to her withdrawn personality and manipulation from her mother, Kokuhaku became increasingly colder and isolated as she grew up, only focusing on herself and her studies and not having any interest in other people or what they thought of her. This, combined with her family name carrying so much weight in Misato, resulted in her being feared by other students in junior high, and most would do what they could to avoid her. The same was true for her classmate Ken Fujii - despite being the class representative of their second year junior high class, he was deeply intimidated by Kokuhaku’s demeanour and tried his best to stay out of her way. However, when they were assigned to work together on a book report, there wasn’t anything he could do to avoid her anymore. Though he was afraid to even speak to her, Kokuhaku didn’t pick up on his fear in the slightest, resulting in their initial discussions being extremely awkward and mostly one-sided. Despite this, the more Kokuhaku discussed her thoughts on the book, the more she inadvertently opened up - reading was another one of her passions after all, and her thorough analysis and detailed observations on a book the two of them both enjoyed was enough to get the conversation going, albeit a bit late.

As they continued their work together, their discussions slowly but surely became more casual - little chats about their favourite kinds of teas and what genres they enjoyed the most gradually turned into conversations about their home life, their past and their dreams for the future. Though Kokuhaku had been acquainted with childhood friend Tomoe Mizuki since kindergarten, this was her first time really opening up to someone and understanding how talking about your problems and interests with another person could relieve stress and forge a bond with them. Not only did Ken’s perspective of her change completely, but Kokuhaku now understood the concept of having a friend to lean on. In the end, Ken never admitted to her how intimidated he’d been prior to the assignment, but he did inadvertently become Kokuhaku’s first real friend, someone to consult with when she was indecisive and to share her achievements with, a role he gladly took on.

Prologue
Kokuhaku, along with a few other classmates, were invited to classroom 2-4 after school by Tomoe Mizuki - however, she hadn't even seen the invite on her phone, and was out in the school's garden reading. Despite this, Tomoe came and found her and dragged her up to classroom 2-4 to meet up with everyone else.

Once everyone had gathered, she presented the Sachiko Ever After charm and explained its' significance to the group, before inviting them all to perform the ritual with her. The ritual involved holding a paper Sachiko doll in a circle, chanting and tearing the doll to pieces. Once everyone agreed and understood the rules, they tore apart the paper doll, and Kokuhaku put her scrap in her breast pocket for safekeeping. Shortly after the ceremony, an earthquake occurred and opened a gaping hole in the floor that she and the others all fell through, leading them to Heavenly Host Elementary School.

TRUE END
A short while later, she awoke to find herself in one of the classrooms of the run-down school building. As a result of her phobia of both the dark and ghosts, she stayed in the classroom she woke up in for several hours before she even considered venturing outside. However, she knew she'd only be there longer if she didn't get moving, and eventually forced herself to leave and explore the school.

She was lucky enough to end up in a space that had few bodies and spirits, but she also had few options for exploration, as many of the classroom doors were locked. After circling the building, she began wondering if maybe some of her classmates were in the locked rooms, and decided to investigate and see if she could open them. She made her way to the first floor, only to run into her classmate, Akihiko Kagurazaka, who was bleeding from a stomach injury. Despite him telling her to run, she told him she'd go and get medical supplies, and ran to the school's infirmary. It was here that she was possessed by the spirit of the school's nurse, Yoshie Shinozaki, and lost all free will of her body and mind.

Under Yoshie's control, Kokuhaku roamed the school in a dazed state, searching for a target to kill. Thanks to Yoshie's spiritual power, she was able to freely cross the closed spaces of Heavenly Host, allowing her to search far and wide for any students that might interest her. This eventually lead her to the music room in the second wing of the school, and inside it was Kokuhaku's classmate, Ken Fujii. As soon as he approached her to check on her, she plunged the scissors she'd been clutching into his chest, effectively dealing enough damage to incapacitate him. Unsure of what to do with the body, she dragged him, still alive and half-conscious, all the way to the school's basement, leaving the rest to the child spirits that occupied the school.

Yoshie continued to possess Kokuhaku for a few days afterwards, but by the fifth day, she began losing her grip as Kokuhaku's spirit slowly woke up and fought back. When she found herself stuck in the school's art room, unable to move her legs anymore, Yoshie consumed Kokuhaku's entire being, leaving nothing left but a black stain on the floor in the corner of the room.

GOOD END
Like in TRUE END, Kokuhaku was possessed by the spirit of Yoshie Shinozaki - however, she didn't run into Akihiko, and was instead trapped in the infirmary before she could even explore the rest of the school. Under Yoshie's control, she sprinted from the infirmary to the second wing, where she encountered Tomoe, Yuma and Ken. As Ken approached her, she moved to attack him, but was exorcised by Tomoe, causing her to fall unconscious.

She awoke a few hours later to find herself being carried on Ken's back with no recollection of what had happened. Once she was fully conscious, Tomoe explained what happened to her, and the rest of the group updated her on what they'd found out - they needed to appease the child spirits within the school, and then perform the Sachiko Ever After charm again properly to get back home. Just hearing the words 'child spirits' scared her, but she was too embarrassed to tell anyone, and tried to act normal about everything. Despite this, she found herself clinging to Ken's arm to try and ground herself.

As they were resting by the side of the hallway, they were approached by a wandering blue spirit, who gave them the cursed doll to aid them in their escape. The spirit told them the doll was capable of giving them clues for how to appease the spirits that made up the school. Through the help of the doll's directions, they were able to retrieve the tongue of Ryou, one of the child spirits, and return it to him. However, after his repentance, Kokuhaku began to cry and revealed her fear of ghosts to them. Within seconds, she felt Ken's arms around her, reassuring her he'd keep her safe. Thanks to him, she was able to calm down a bit, though she held his hand for the rest of their time there.

Although they didn't know it, appeasing Ryou unintentionally prevented Kain's death, and after appeasing another child spirit, Tokiko, they were able to meet up with her in the main building. She asked them if they'd seen Mitsuharu, but before anyone could answer, the distinct noise of something falling into the school's outdoor pool echoed through the hallway. Fearing the worst, the group ran outside to see the water rippling. Before anyone could stop her, Kain dove into the water, resurfacing a minute later with Mitsuharu's body - unconscious, but alive. After performing CPR, she was able to resuscitate him, much to everyone's relief. After he'd woken up though, the cursed doll told them the final tongue was in the pool, and, once Mitsuharu was ready, the group searched for the pump room key. While looking around, Kokuhaku noticed it hooked on the chain link fence, and after emptying the pool, they retrieved the final child spirit, Yuki's eye and tongue from the drain.

After appeasing Yuki, the closed spaces merged together, and all ten classmates were reunited at last. Once regrouped, they discussed everything they'd found out about the school, from its' many closed spaces to the child spirits that made it up. Since it seemed like the spirits had been appeased, everyone agreed that now was the time to perform the ritual again. However, in the middle of performing the chant again to return home, there was an ear-piercing scream from the outdoor walkway that made everyone jump. Forgetting about the ritual for the moment, Kokuhaku and the group ran outside just in time to witness the principal fall from the school rooftop, stuck in a suicide loop. Without warning, everyone watched as Hatto silently climbed over the fence, waited for the principal to fall again, and picked up a key that had fallen on the ground next to him. The key was too small and dull to be visible, and everyone was confused as to how he'd seen it, but pushed their concerns to the side to pursue what was really important.

Tomoe reminded everyone of the sealed principal's office in the second wing, the one door that had remained locked the entire time, and they set out to open it. Unsurprisingly, the key worked, but the room itself just raised more questions. While investigating, Mitsuharu noticed a hidden switch in the space heater that opened a secret passage, and Ken found a fourth tongue inside the principal’s desk drawer. He told everyone that touching the tongue caused him to experience a flashback to another child’s murder, and Tomoe confirmed there was a fourth victim in the case, although she was said to have survived - however, the tongue most certainly belonged to her. Filled with questions, the group descended the secret passage's ladder to get to the bottom of the story.

The passage led them to the abandoned bomb shelter, where Sachiko herself awaited them at the end.  Ken tried to offer her the tongue, but it only seemed to anger her further. They found themselves frozen in place, and she raised her scissors to Kokuhaku, ready to strike. Despite her protests, Ken pleaded with Sachiko enough for her to stab him instead, but in the split second she struck him, her power wavered enough for Shin to pull a black cat plushie from her bag and throw it at her. The tongue combined with the plushie was enough to make Sachiko repent, and her spirit was freed. She and Akihiko checked on Ken, while Tomoe urged the group to get out of the basement, as this was their only chance to escape. Akihiko gave his his white button up to Ken to help stop the bleeding before the three of them followed the rest of their classmates. She and the others made it to the outdoor walkway in time, and were freed from the school’s dimension.

Relationships

Ken Fujii3011830fbb7c20c379069bb502fffc7f1411be33
Ken is Kokuhaku's most trusted friend, and they usually spend their lunch together in the library, either silently reading or having quiet chats. She feels safer around him than anyone else, and knows that when she needs to confide in someone, he's the one she should go to. Their similar personalities allow them to work well together, and they often partner up for group projects. Although she's not good at understanding her feelings, Kokuhaku cares deeply for Ken, and her feelings towards him are different than those she has for anyone else.

A month after the events of GOOD END, they end up in a relationship together.

Tomoe Mizuki168d43136a69f454ca4587869f44a0bca3a4abdf
Tomoe and Kokuhaku have a somewhat unconventional friendship. Though they've been friends since kindergarten, Tomoe often overwhelms Kokuhaku and drags her into her schemes without a second thought. This can lead to Kokuhaku getting frustrated with her sometimes, and she often needs to be alone for a while when they've finished talking. At the end of the day though, she doesn't regret their friendship and is happy Tomoe welcomed her into her life.

Akihiko Kagurazaka14f2c7e2be49f96bcfc3555a0291635692574f02
Kokuhaku was asked out by Akihiko in her first year of high school, and, nervous about what he would do if she rejected him, she accepted. However, this relationship was very short-lived, and they only lasted a few weeks before Kokuhaku called it off. Despite their history, they still interact with each other frequently, since Akihiko is Ken's best friend - although their personalities and viewpoints routinely clash with each other.

Yoshiyuki Shinohara44791df05dc2c9094b353844b3e75a395549dde8
They aren't close, but Kokuhaku is acquainted with Yoshiyuki, because his younger sister, Ryoko is best friends with Miyuki. As such, she seems him often when he comes to pick Ryoko up from the dojo.

In 2020, twelve years after the events of GOOD END, Kokuhaku and Yoshiyuki become in-laws after their sisters get married.
