Yoshiyuki Shinohara (篠原嘉幸 Shinohara Yoshiyuki) is a major character in Corpse Party: Forbidden Rebirth. He is a student of Misato Municipal Brotherhood High's classroom 3-4, and a victim of Heavenly Host Elementary School.

Yoshiyuki is a playable character in TRUE END, GOOD END and BAD END, and a supporting character in REVERSE END and LOST END.

Design

Yoshiyuki is a teenage boy of above average height, with dark red hair and magenta eyes. His hair is usually quite messy, and is dyed, with his natural colour being a light brown. He's almost never seen without his beanie, and usually wears his dark gray one when at school. When working on his computer or reading, he wears black reading glasses.

His usual school uniform consists of an unbuttoned black gakuran jacket, along with a white collared shirt, red t-shirt, black slacks and brown loafers. He wears a magenta scarf around his neck, which was given to him as a gift by his little sister when he was in middle school.

Post-BAD END, he has two scars underneath his left eye.

Personality

Yoshiyuki is a somewhat blunt, quiet student from Misato Municipal Brotherhood High's class 3-4. Stoic and intimidating at times, he has the aura of a lone wolf and prefers to solve any problems he has on his own. Due to his dyed hair and typical scowl, he’s often perceived as a delinquent by his peers, though this couldn’t be farther from the truth. In reality, he’s a very caring and protective person, often to the point of being overbearing, and wouldn’t hurt so much as a fly - as long as his younger sister Ryoko and his best friends Hatto Sudo and Shin Aichi are safe, that’s all that matters to him.

He’s had difficulties with making friends since he was a child, thanks to his secluded nature. After becoming the ‘man of the household’ at only nine years old, he had to grow up very quickly, resulting in him limiting his feelings more and more as he cared for his younger sister. He struggles to communicate his emotions in an “appropriate” way - he often intimidates people without meaning to, due to his typical facial expressions being flat and unhappy. This, combined with his deep voice and above-average height, have caused even the school’s bullies to be intimidated by him, and most people tend to steer clear of his path.

In the same vein as him not communicating well, he also isn’t very good at recognizing other people’s emotions, and can come across as tactless on occasion. He typically needs to be told precisely what others are thinking, since he isn’t very good at reading between the lines. Passive-aggressive remarks don’t work on him, and there are times when he becomes overbearing and irritating to those he’s caring for, despite only having the best of intentions. However, he’s great at analyzing abstract media and finding all the hidden nuances - this skill simply doesn’t extend to human interaction for him.

Despite this, Yoshiyuki is perhaps one of the most misunderstood students of Misato. He’s extremely shy, to the point that his face is usually flushed red when anyone tries to speak to him. He’s a natural protector who cares deeply about his friends - while he never got into any physical fights in elementary school, he had a habit of standing up for any kids being bullied, even if this resulted in him getting beat up himself. As he adjusted to the beatings over the years, the boys who picked on him began to notice him taking their attacks like a pro, and it got to the point where Yoshiyuki raising a fist and scowling at them was enough to send them running. Even now in high school, those same boys still avoid him every time their paths cross.

Though he’s amazing at caring for others, he neglects to do the same for himself. His room is always messy, often with clothes strewn about and fast food bags littering the floor. Even though his cooking is above-average, he only ever makes meals for Ryoko, typically using the excuse that he isn’t hungry or he’ll get something later. While part of this is because he wants to save whatever groceries they can afford for his sister, he simply doesn't see the importance in taking care of his own body, and would rather use that energy to support his family.

He’s an incredible artist who specializes in multiple different mediums, including digital art, painting and sketching. Despite his talents, he’s extremely embarrassed of his drawings and will go to great lengths to hide them from everyone, even his sister. He does online commission work to earn some money on the side, but uses a female alias to hide his identity, since he feels it’s more ‘typical’ of an artist to be a girl.

Plot

Backstory
Yoshiyuki grew up in a small apartment with his mother and his younger sister, Ryoko. With his mother working extremely long hours daily and his father's absence, Yoshiyuki has acted as the primary caretaker for his sister since he was nine years old. Although this resulted in him maturing very early, his bond with Ryoko is one of the things that keeps him motivated every day, because he knows that she needs him. Despite his somewhat scary impression to others, he treats her warmly no matter what, and wants to provide her with the best life he can give. He’s protective over her, but not to an extreme amount - just enough to ensure that she’s safe while still having fun and enjoying herself.

Yoshiyuki's protective nature was not exclusive to just his sister - it also helped him make his first friend. When he noticed some of his classmates harassing a younger student after school one day, he stepped in and forced them to back off. Luckily, this wasn't much of a challenge, since many of his classmates were already scared of him. Once they'd left, the student thanked him and introduced himself as Hatto Sudo. Feeling bad for what happened, Yoshiyuki walked him home and told him they could hang out the following day during lunch. This offer sparked the official start of their friendship, and they continued to spend their lunches together up until high school.

Yoshiyuki was always very interested in coding, a passion that stemmed from his love of video games. He was always curious about how they worked, and by saving up money from babysitting and chores, he purchased a laptop for himself just before he turned thirteen. Though this did allow him to learn more about coding, his exposure to the internet made him even more of a reclusive person than before.

In his final year of junior high, Yoshiyuki finally met his other best friend, although their meeting was somewhat unconventional. While walking to class, they accidentally collided with each other, causing his books to end up all over the ground. Although it didn't bother him very much, he felt bad about not getting the girl's name or apologizing to her, and assumed she probably disliked him now. So, when she showed up the next day with a batch of cookies for him, he got extremely embarrassed and insisted they share them over lunch. It was then that they were finally able to properly introduce themselves, and he learned her name was Shin Aichi.

While they ate their lunch together, Yoshiyuki’s bag was knocked over by one of their more rowdy classmates, causing its' contents to spill all over the floor. He went to pick everything up, but Shin was faster than he was, and before he knew it, she had one of his sketches in her hand. He snatched it from her as fast as he could, but the look on her face told him it was too late. He shushed her before she could get a word in, telling her to keep quiet, and that they could talk more about it after school.

The rest of their lunch was silent, as Yoshiyuki spent the rest of the time thinking about what he'd say to her later. Once they were alone together, Yoshiyuki finally explained that he was extremely embarrassed of his hobbies, and thought that they were 'too girly' for someone like him. He told her that he was certain people would make fun of him if they ever found out, hence why he'd been so secretive about it. After thinking for a moment, Shin told him it was nothing to be ashamed of, and that it was better to just do things you enjoyed rather than worry about what others will think of you for it. Although he still felt embarrassed showing people his works, he took what she said to heart and tried to be more open with both her and Hatto from then on. This lead to both of them becoming his closest and most trusted friends.

Heavenly Host

If you know nothing about Corpse Party, be sure to read through this quick glossary first! It'll make a lot of terminology easier when reading this section!

Prologue
Yoshiyuki, along with a few other classmates, were invited to classroom 2-4 after school by Tomoe Mizuki. Once everyone had gathered, she presented the Sachiko Ever After charm and explained its' significance to the group, before inviting them all to perform the ritual with her. The ritual involved holding a paper Sachiko doll in a circle, chanting and tearing the doll to pieces. Once everyone agreed and understood the rules, they tore apart the paper doll, and Yoshiyuki put his scrap in his backpack for safekeeping. Shortly after the ceremony, an earthquake occurred and opened a gaping hole in the floor that he and the others all fell through, leading them to Heavenly Host Elementary School.

TRUE END
Not long after, he awoke to find himself in the run-down school building, and immediately prioritized finding Hatto and Shin, no matter the risk. Although he was confined to the main building of Heavenly Host, he didn't let that stop him, and continuously searched it in any way he could, refusing to give himself any breaks until he found his friends. Despite this, his efforts yielded little results - even when he smashed the windows of a few of the locked classrooms, there wasn't anything special hidden inside, leaving him more confused than before.

Much of his hope was crushed when he found Yuma's body on the first floor, and his stomach sank when he learned through a note in her hand that Tomoe had somehow exited the school and hadn't come back. He found himself torn between going out to look for her or staying to search for Shin and Hatto, and decided to compromise by looking for them while also looking for the escape route she'd used. When he couldn't find the walkway on the first floor, he searched the second floor to see if it was located there. It was then that a large earthquake occurred, causing the floor beneath him to give out and sending him falling to the first floor again. Unbeknownst to him, these earthquakes enabled him to shift through the different closed spaces of Heavenly Host, and when the dust settled, the first floor hallway looked completely different than before.

As he brushed himself off, he noticed the unmistakable figure of Hatto in the distance. He greeted him with a hug, and told him he'd spent all of his time searching for him and Shin, and was happy to find someone alive. He tentatively brought up the topic of Yuma's death, since he knew that her and Hatto had been friends. In return, Hatto informed him that he'd found Akihiko dead as well. After a brief moment of silence, Yoshiyuki asked to see his body and pay his respects, thinking it was only right considering his closeness with Shin. Hatto obliged and led him down the hallway to his remains.

As they approached his body, he closed his eyes to begin a prayer, but was interrupted when a pair of hands suddenly pushed him to the ground. In the process, a chunk of his calf was caught in a rusted trap, causing pain to shoot through his body. He looked up to see Hatto standing over him, brandishing his pocket knife with obvious intent to kill. As he leaned in though, a sudden strike to his head caused him to crumple. In the commotion, neither of them had noticed Yoshikazu Yanagahori at the end of the hall, who ran in to strike Yoshiyuki - but when Hatto moved, the hammer struck him instead, splitting his skull and killing him instantly.

In the time it took Yoshiyuki to process what had happened, Yoshikazu had already fled, clearly ashamed of his mistake. Hatto's head had fallen into his lap, and the blood from his wound spilled onto Yoshiyuki's clothes - for the first minute, all he could do was stare at it in disbelief. When it hit him though, he began to cry loudly, the emotional pain far outweighing the pain in his leg. He sat there in silence, stroking Hatto's hair and replaying the sequence of events in his head. He refused to believe he'd purposely tried to attack him like that, and knew he'd misinterpreted it somehow. He knew Hatto would never do that to him.

When he was able to convince himself to leave, he propped his body up against the wall to try and give it a more dignified appearance. As he did this, a small key fell from his pocket, labelled 3-A - one of the classrooms that had been locked since he'd arrived. He decided to go and investigate, pushing through despite his injuries. As he passed Akihiko's body, he realized how consistent his wounds were with a knife attack, but cursed himself out for even thinking that.

Despite his best efforts though, blood loss quickly set in and he collapsed in classroom 2-A after an intense dizzy spell. As he lay on the ground bleeding out, he realized that Shin was going to be alone now that both him and Akihiko were gone, and spent his last moments praying for her survival.

GOOD END
Like in TRUE END, Yoshiyuki's immediate priority was locating Shin and Hatto and making sure they were safe. After a group of his classmates appeased the child spirit, Ryou, an earthquake occurred that caused him to fall through the floor. When he brushed himself off, he noticed Hatto just down the hallway and greeted him with a hug. Hatto's mental state was considerably better this time around, and he was fully conscious as he told Yoshiyuki about some of the things he'd seen around Heavenly Host so far. He slipped his hand into his pocket as he spoke, but suddenly paused mid-sentence to fish out a small key labelled 3-A. Yoshiyuki asked where he'd found it, but Hatto told him he'd never seen it before. Despite this, they decided to investigate the classroom together.

They unlocked the classroom door, and were shocked to find Shin inside, alive but exhausted. At the sight of them, she began to cry and hugged Yoshiyuki, explaining through tears that she'd been trapped for hours and was sure she was going to die there. Yoshiyuki spent the next few minutes comforting her, as she refused to let go of him, and he explained about the key while Hatto investigated the classroom for anything interesting. Once she was feeling better, the three of them made a plan to try and find the rest of their classmates and escape the school.

A short while after Shin was freed, another earthquake, this time caused by their classmates appeasing Tokiko, occurred. Once it was over though, Hatto suddenly became violently ill, and the group was forced to stop momentarily when he could no longer stand. He vomited up a black tar-like substance, which Yoshiyuki initially thought was blood, but it made no sense since he had no physical injuries. In reality, it was actually the darkening purging itself from his body. Though him and Shin were concerned, he told them he felt better now that it was out of his system, and with no other options, they continued pushing forward.

While wandering the halls, they came across an old, torn-up plush that resembled a black cat. Shin seemed interested in it, but Yoshiyuki instructed her not to pick it up, since it seemed suspiciously out of place there and he had a feeling it would lead to trouble. However, just a few moments after, a large earthquake occurred that shook the whole school. Although they didn't know it, this earthquake was a result of their classmates appeasing the final child spirit, Yuki, causing the closed spaces to merge together. Not long after, all ten of them were reunited at last.

Once regrouped, they discussed everything they'd found out about the school, from its' many closed spaces to the child spirits that made it up. Tomoe explained to the group that they'd performed the initial chant incorrectly, and to get back home, they needed to perform the ritual the right way this time. In order to do it correctly, they had to chant once for everyone in the group plus Sachiko herself - and, since it seemed like all the spirits had been appeased, everyone agreed that now was the time to perform the ritual again. However, in the middle of performing the chant, there was an ear-piercing scream from the outdoor walkway that made everyone jump. Forgetting about the ritual for the moment, Yoshiyuki and the group ran outside just in time to witness the principal fall from the school rooftop, stuck in a suicide loop. Without warning, everyone watched as Hatto silently climbed over the fence, waited for the principal to fall again, and picked up a key that had fallen on the ground next to him. The key was too small and dull to be visible, and everyone was confused as to how he'd seen it, but pushed their concerns to the side to pursue what was really important.

Tomoe reminded everyone of the sealed principal's office in the second wing, the one door that had remained locked the entire time, and they set out to open it. Unsurprisingly, the key worked, but the room itself just raised more questions. While investigating, Mitsuharu noticed a hidden switch in the space heater that opened a secret passage, and Ken found a fourth tongue inside the principal’s desk drawer. He told everyone that touching the tongue caused him to experience a flashback to another child’s murder, and Tomoe confirmed there was a fourth victim in the case, although she was said to have survived - however, the tongue most certainly belonged to her. Filled with questions, the group descended the secret passage's ladder to get to the bottom of the story.

The passage led them to the abandoned bomb shelter, where Sachiko herself awaited them at the end. Ken tried to offer her the tongue, but it only seemed to anger her further. They found themselves frozen in place, and she raised her scissors to Kokuhaku, ready to strike. Ken pleaded with her enough for her to stab him instead, but in the split second she struck him, her power wavered enough for Shin to reveal the black cat plushie in her bag and throw it at her. The tongue combined with the plushie was enough to make Sachiko repent, and her spirit was freed. Akihiko and Kokuhaku checked on Ken, while Tomoe urged the group to get out of the basement, as this was their only chance to escape. With barely any time to spare, he and the others made it to the outdoor walkway in time, and were freed from the school’s dimension.

Relationships

Hatto Sudoa77770b67850c449404f4944d543e3af9971ce73
Hatto is Yoshiyuki's best friend, and he's one of the only people Yoshiyuki feels completely comfortable with. After he protected him from bullies in elementary school, they became friends quickly, and even in the present day, Hatto is almost always by his side. Their differences allow them to mesh well together, and Yoshiyuki could never see himself being closer or more comfortable with anyone other than him. He worries about Hatto often though, as he knows the kind of upbringing he had, and frequently checks up on him when he hasn't left the house or spoken to anyone in a while.

Two years after the events of GOOD END, Hatto and Yoshiyuki move in together. A year later, they end up in a relationship.

Shin Aichi669bcd7e8d0b00211c40af06095e6df7e81ea375
Shin is also Yoshiyuki's best friend, although they've been friends for a much shorter period of time than him and Hatto have. Although he didn't really know how to act around her in the beginning, as he had no idea how to talk to girls, he's adjusted well to her presence and enjoys spending time with her. He's sometimes a bit cold towards her, but he doesn't realize this at all. He treats her very similar to how he treats Ryoko, leading him to see her as a little sister figure.

Tomoe Mizuki168d43136a69f454ca4587869f44a0bca3a4abdf
Tomoe is one of Yoshiyuki's close friends - they met in the gaming club of their junior high school back in Yoshiyuki's second year, and have been friends ever since. Although many underclassmen kept their distance from him, Tomoe pushed her way into his life, making it pretty much impossible for him to ignore her. They spend a lot of their time hanging out at the local arcade and playing Pokémon together at school.

Kokuhaku Akabojiad920475dc00768a67016025e3fc145b19be2f2f
They aren't close, but Yoshiyuki is acquainted with Kokuhaku, because her younger sister, Miyuki is best friends with Ryoko. As such, he runs into her often when he comes to walk Ryoko home from the dojo she lives in.

In 2020, twelve years after the events of GOOD END, Kokuhaku and Yoshiyuki become in-laws after their sisters get married.

Yuma Misakic5358421ec3906dc2f7781366218736608518055
Yoshiyuki knows that Yuma dislikes him, but has no idea why. From Tomoe's words, he's chalked it up to just being her general dislike for men, but still feels guilty, and worries he did something to anger her. He wants to have a better relationship with her, but has no idea where to start. As such, he's tried to remain on neutral terms with her to not upset the situation further.

Akihiko Kagurazaka14f2c7e2be49f96bcfc3555a0291635692574f02
Yoshiyuki also knows that Akihiko hates him, but doesn't really care about it that much. Since they're in different grades, he finds it pretty easy to just ignore him most of the time, even when he tries to challenge him to stupid competitions. Although he doesn't care about Akihiko, he still makes fun of him to himself sometimes. However, he's still nice to him outwardly for Shin's sake, as he knows how close they are and doesn't want her to get involved in stupid drama.
