Yuma Misaki (三崎由真 Misaki Yuma) is a major character in Corpse Party: Forbidden Rebirth. She is a student of Misato Municipal Brotherhood High's classroom 2-4, and a victim of Heavenly Host Elementary School.

Yuma is the deurotagonist of GOOD END and BAD END, a supporting character in TRUE END and REVERSE END, and the true deurotagonist of LOST END.

Design

Yuma is a teenage girl of below average height, with black hair and purple eyes. She keeps her hair tied up in pigtails at school, but when it's not tied up, her hair reaches just barely below her shoulders. She has thick, dot shaped eyebrows and freckles on the bridge of her nose, shoulders and upper thighs. She wears a purple X-shaped clip in her hair, and a heart-shaped choker around her neck. Her nails are usually painted black.

Her typical school uniform consists of a black cardigan overtop a prussian blue sailor fuku, with a white tie and a skirt that reaches just above her knees. With this, she wears black lacy socks and brown loafers. She has uniform self-harm scars along her wrists and thighs.

Personality

Yuma is a loud and outspoken girl from Misato Municipal Brotherhood High's class 2-4. Her brash attitude means she’s not afraid to stand up for herself in the face of harassment, and she’s quick to put up her defenses if she feels as though she’s under attack. In reality though, this is all a front to protect herself - the real Yuma is a meek and anxious girl who’s been the subject of neglect for the majority of her life. She’s terrified of her voice not being heard, and has resolved to be as loud as she can to compensate for it.

Yuma is what some people would describe as a ‘tsundere’ - she is very cold to people, particularly men, when she first meets them, but will gradually open up so long as they show attention and care for her and her interests. It isn’t easy to earn her trust, however - though she has many acquaintances throughout her grade, only a few of them know of her true personality. In the eyes of many, she is a confident, even intimidating girl who has no issues with speaking her mind.

As a result of years of neglect, Yuma has no idea how to respond to any sort of kind gestures or affection. When her girlfriend, Tomoe Mizuki, would do favours or offer her food before they started dating, she couldn’t understand why she was being so nice to her and would frequently feel sad or guilty afterwards. Though their relationship has taught her a lot about how to accept and reciprocate her feelings, receiving affection or care from anyone else still takes her aback, and in these moments, she will often flee out of embarrassment or anxiety.

Her one true passion is designing and creating clothes - even as a child, Yuma frequently accessorized her clothing with whatever odds and ends she could find, always trying to make herself stand out in a crowd with an unconventional look. Years later, her motivations have remained the same, and she’s always seeking to make her designs look as unique as possible. Her clothing always has a gothic lolita style, but she has an affinity for all kinds of fancy European designs, and often finds a way to blend styles together to make something brand new.

Yuma has a lot of distrust for men in general, and if approached by one, she will be even harsher and more defensive than usual. She was raised without any father figure in her life, and despite her dislike for her mother, she believes that she would have been much less neglectful towards her had her dad not left the picture before she was born. This, coupled by frequent torment from boys bullying her in kindergarten, has left her with an overall distaste for men, and there are only a select few she’s willing to trust in any capacity.

Most of her actions are influenced by her emotions, and she is known to be impulsive, especially in times of emotional distress. It’s easy for her to get worked up over minor problems, and she may lash out at herself and others in some cases. She struggles with talking herself down on her own, and almost always needs someone to lean on in dire situations - being by herself results in a spiral of negative thoughts that can be hard for her to recover from. In extreme cases, she has resorted to dramatic actions as a cry for help - at one point, she took her sewing scissors to her hair and cut it all off during a psychotic break.

She often engages in self-mutilation in order to cope with her emotional pain, and will frequently cut her arms and legs with a box cutter or bang her head against a wall. She’s extremely embarrassed of the marks these actions leave behind, and will go to great lengths to keep them covered up.

Plot

Backstory
Yuma was born to her single mother in a small house in the outskirts of Misato City. An accidental pregnancy that resulted in her father abandoning the family, she was often neglected by her mother and blamed for the problems in her life. She was usually left to fend for herself, forcing her to learn how to be independent as a child. The only family member who tried to look after her was her aunt Rina, who did whatever she could to get food and clothing to her.

Even with her limited resources, Yuma had a deep interest in fashion and creating her own outfits from the start. She would often sketch out her dream outfits, which led to things like her making scarves out of old clothing, and cutting up fabric scraps to make ribbons and bows. Although they were shabby looking, she was proud of her handiwork and happy that she was able to do it by herself.

Deep down though, Yuma still had a hole in her heart where her mother was. Even though she hated her, she also craved validation from her more than anything else, but it seemed like nothing she did was ever good enough for her. The only idea she had to change her mother's mind about her was through her grades, which she began working towards in junior high. However, after a year and a half of mediocre marks, she cracked under the pressure and had a meltdown in her empty classroom after school.

Though she was hoping the school was empty by that point, she felt a sense of relief when her classmate, Tomoe Mizuki, walked by and noticed her. She was one of the classmates who was very nice to her, and always went out of her way to help her in any way she could. Although Yuma often couldn't express her gratitude outright, she was thankful for everything she did, and out of any of her classmates, she was glad it was Tomoe who found her.

When she asked what was wrong, Yuma explained about her marks, which turned into her venting about her issues with her mother and how much she hated herself.  When she was done, Tomoe hugged her and told her all of the things that she loved about her, ranging from her hair and eyes to her voice, attitude and style. Although it started out as just qualities she had, her speech ended up unexpectedly turning into a love confession. Yuma sat in stunned silence for a moment, but before Tomoe could take it back, she told her she loved her too, and that she wanted to be with her.

Although they eased into their relationship slowly, it didn't take long for them to become completely comfortable with each other, and they continued to date happily for the remainder of junior high, and even into their high school years. Tomoe supported Yuma's passions as best she could, and purchased her an expensive sewing machine for her fourteenth birthday, allowing her to bring her designs into reality. It also worked well as a distraction, keeping her from self harming and engaging in destructive behaviour.

That being said, she still struggled with the occasional relapse, which generally ended with her harming herself in some way. One night in her first year of high school, she impulsively took her sewing scissors to her hair, cutting it to chin length in a few quick snips. Instantly feeling regret, she called Tomoe and told her she impulsively did something horrible to herself, which resulted in her showing up on her doorstep half an hour later.

Yuma explained through tears that she had a meltdown and chopped it off on a whim, and was scared that everyone was going to think she was ugly and horrible now because of it. In her usual reassuring tone, Tomoe told her that no one was going to think those things at all, and told her she thought she looked cute with short hair. She then unclipped the X shaped hair clip she always wore and fixed it into her hair, and told her she was the most beautiful girl in the world, and that all she had to do was look in the mirror and see the hair clip to remember that. Her words instantly comforted Yuma and she took them to heart, and has worn the hair clip she gave her every day since then.

Heavenly Host

If you know nothing about Corpse Party, be sure to read through this quick glossary first! It'll make a lot of terminology easier when reading this section!

Prologue
Yuma, along with a few other classmates, were invited to classroom 2-4 after school by Tomoe. Once everyone had gathered, she presented the Sachiko Ever After charm and explained its' significance to the group, before inviting them all to perform the ritual with her. The ritual involved holding a paper Sachiko doll in a circle, chanting and tearing the doll to pieces. Once everyone agreed and understood the rules, they tore apart the paper doll, and Yuma put her scrap in her student ID for safekeeping. Shortly after the ceremony, an earthquake occurred and opened a gaping hole in the floor that she and the others all fell through, leading them to Heavenly Host Elementary School.

TRUE END
A short while later, she was shaken awake by Tomoe, and opened her eyes to find herself in the old, run-down school building. One look at her surroundings was enough for her, and she huddled in the corner while Tomoe investigated the classroom. Yuma watched her pick up a newspaper article, but when she asked her what it said, she accidentally dropped it through one of the holes in the floor and told her she hadn't had time to read it. Before she could ask more questions, Tomoe switched the topic to leaving the classroom and finding an exit. Despite her fear, Yuma agreed, not wanting to stay there any longer than she had to.

They didn't get very far into their exploration before they encountered the bodies of six junior high students, which sent Yuma into a full-on meltdown. All of them had clearly been murdered, and she began to worry about if that was going to happen to her too. Luckily, Tomoe was there to pull her away and ground her, and she promised her she'd get her out as soon as possible. Her anxiety was unbearable, but she was able to manage it thanks to Tomoe's presence, and they continued to carefully investigate the school.

They spent a few hours wandering through the main building and checking out anything they could, but they'd made no progress in escaping. She was beginning to get frustrated and scared, and she felt like there wasn't anything else they could do except wait to finally die. Suddenly, a large earthquake occurred, big enough to shake the whole building. Unbeknownst to them, these earthquakes enabled them to shift through the different closed spaces of Heavenly Host, and when the dust settled, the hallway they were in looked completely different than before. Eager to explore and see if anything changed, Tomoe led her back down to the first floor of the school, where they discovered the entrance to the outdoor walkway had now appeared.

They opened the door and were greeted with the familiar sound of rain, indicating they'd finally found a way outside. However, the only thing they could see was a dense forest that surrounded the entire school, with no sign of a pathway anywhere. Tomoe told her she had a plan - she would go out and clear a path, then return to the school and send Yuma on her way while she rounded up their other classmates. Yuma protested, but she shut her down, telling her she had to be the one to go out, since she'd gotten everyone stuck in here to begin with. To try and ease her anxieties, Tomoe gave her her purple bow as a promise she'd come back. Then, she kissed her goodbye and slipped into the forest, while Yuma went back into the main building and huddled in the corner near the door while she waited.

That small space was where she remained for three days, with no food, water or sleep. The darkening had slowly crept up on her, which caused her mind to slip in and out of consciousness every so often. When this happened, she'd wake up with shards of glass in her hands and small cuts along her wrists. On the third day, one of the child spirits, Tokiko, came after her and forced her to move from her spot. In her haste, she accidentally dropped Tomoe's bow, and had no choice but to leave it behind to escape.

In her darkened state, she began to write her final message as she ran, talking about how Tomoe hadn't come back and she just wanted to die already. Before she could finish her note, Tokiko plunged her scissors into the back of her neck, effectively incapacitating her. Once Yuma had stopped moving, she methodically removed her head by repeatedly stabbing her neck until her head had fallen off. Pleased with her handiwork, Tokiko placed the head neatly beside her body, but not before removing her hair clip and taking it with her.

GOOD END
Like in TRUE END, Yuma and Tomoe were lucky enough to end up in the same closed space together, and once they were able to access the outdoor walkway, Tomoe told her she was going to go out and find a way back home for her. However, Yuma protested this plan profusely, and reasoned that the two of them should investigate the second wing of the school before making any hasty decisions. Though it took some convincing, Tomoe eventually agreed with her, and they entered the second wing to scout for any classmates.

As they wandered the halls, they ended up running into Ken, who looked equally as surprised to see them. He asked them how they'd managed to get inside the building, but Tomoe told him they'd had no issues at all. Before they could ask any more questions, Yuma noticed Ken was looking behind them, and turned around to see Kokuhaku approaching them. To her, nothing looked immediately off, but she could tell by the look on Tomoe's face that something was wrong. When Ken ran over to greet her, Tomoe yelled something in another language, causing Kokuhaku to collapse. As he checked up on her, Akihiko came around the corner and joined the group. He explained that he saw Kokuhaku sprint out of the infirmary and had followed her, and Tomoe confirmed she'd been possessed and she'd exorcised the spirit from her body.

While they waited for her to wake up, Tomoe admitted that she knew where they were, and revealed a journal detailing information about the murders took place there, as she'd researched them in the past. Ken showed them some newspaper reports he’d found, consisting of the reports on the murder victims and the research done by Kou Kibiki, as well as the proper way to perform the Sachiko Ever After charm. Tomoe told them their best bet for escape was to figure out how to appease the spirits, and then perform the charm properly. Yuma and Akihiko were hesitant, as the idea of getting face-to-face with ghosts wasn't very appealing  - however, they decided it was better than doing nothing, and with Ken carrying Kokuhaku on his back, the group set off to figure out a means of appeasement.

After Kokuhaku regained consciousness, she and the others took a break to update her with the new information they had. As they were resting by the side of the hallway, they were approached by a wandering blue spirit, who gave them the cursed doll to aid them in their escape. The spirit told them the doll was capable of giving them clues for how to appease the spirits that made up the school. Through the help of the doll's directions, they were able to retrieve the tongue of Ryou, one of the child spirits, and return it to him. However, after his repentance, Kokuhaku began to cry and revealed her fear of ghosts to them. Though concerned about Kokuhaku, Yuma knew her classmates could handle the situation better than she could, so she kept her distance and watched as Ken hugged her and promised to keep her safe from the other ghosts in the school.

Ryou's repentence unintentionally prevented Kain's death, and after appeasing Tokiko, they were able to meet up with her in the main building. She asked them if they'd seen Mitsuharu, but before anyone could answer, the distinct noise of something falling into the school's outdoor pool echoed through the hallway. Fearing the worst, the group ran outside to see the water rippling. Before anyone could stop her, Kain dove into the water, resurfacing a minute later with Mitsuharu's body - unconscious, but alive. After performing CPR, she was able to resuscitate him, much to everyone's relief. After he'd woken up though, the cursed doll told them the final tongue was in the pool, and, once Mitsuharu was ready, the group searched for the pump room key. Kokuhaku found it hooked on the chain link fence, and after emptying the pool, they retrieved the final child spirit, Yuki's eye and tongue from the drain.

After appeasing Yuki, the closed spaces merged together, and all ten classmates were reunited at last. Once regrouped, they discussed everything they'd found out about the school, from its' many closed spaces to the child spirits that made it up. Tomoe told everyone about the proper method of performing the charm, and, since it seemed like the spirits had been appeased, everyone agreed that now was the time to perform the ritual again. However, in the middle of performing the chant again to return home, there was an ear-piercing scream from the outdoor walkway that made everyone jump. Forgetting about the ritual for the moment, Yuma and the group ran outside just in time to witness the principal fall from the school rooftop, stuck in a suicide loop. Without warning, everyone watched as Hatto silently climbed over the fence, waited for the principal to fall again, and picked up a key that had fallen on the ground next to him. The key was too small and dull to be visible, and everyone was confused as to how he'd seen it, but pushed their concerns to the side to pursue what was really important.

Tomoe reminded everyone of the sealed principal's office in the second wing, the one door that had remained locked the entire time, and they set out to open it. Unsurprisingly, the key worked, but the room itself just raised more questions. While investigating, Mitsuharu noticed a hidden switch in the space heater that opened a secret passage, and Ken found a fourth tongue inside the principal’s desk drawer. He told everyone that touching the tongue caused him to experience a flashback to another child’s murder, and Tomoe confirmed there was a fourth victim in the case, although she was said to have survived - however, the tongue most certainly belonged to her. Filled with questions, the group descended the secret passage's ladder to get to the bottom of the story.

The passage led them to the abandoned bomb shelter, where Sachiko herself awaited them at the end. Ken tried to offer her the tongue, but it only seemed to anger her further. They found themselves frozen in place, and she raised her scissors to Kokuhaku, ready to strike. Ken pleaded with her enough for her to stab him instead, but in the split second she struck him, her power wavered enough for Shin to pull a black cat plushie from her bag and throw it at her. The tongue combined with the plushie was enough to make Sachiko repent, and her spirit was freed. Akihiko and Kokuhaku checked on Ken, while Tomoe urged the group to get out of the basement, as this was their only chance to escape. With barely any time to spare, she and the others made it to the outdoor walkway in time, and were freed from the school’s dimension.

Relationships

Tomoe Mizuki168d43136a69f454ca4587869f44a0bca3a4abdf
Tomoe is Yuma's girlfriend, and they've been in a relationship for nearly three years now. Yuma is often spoiled by her with expensive gifts, and she's has even taken her to France before to meet her extended family. Although she sometimes feels like she doesn't give enough back, Tomoe has reminded her many times that just her being there is enough for her. Although the thought of marriage is still very far away, she truly believes her and Tomoe will be together forever and can't wait until they officially move in together and start a family.

Hatto Sudoa77770b67850c449404f4944d543e3af9971ce73
Yuma is very distrustful towards men, and as such, doesn't have many relationships with them. The one exception to this is Hatto, who she met in her first year of high school. When he asked her about her sewing, she initially got defensive, but was nicer when she realized he was asking her to fix something for him. Since they ride the same train to and from school every day, they usually sit beside each other in semi-comfortable silence. She feels comfortable in his presence, and also feels safer on the train, since he's intimidating enough to drive off any man who might approach her.

Yoshiyuki Shinohara44791df05dc2c9094b353844b3e75a395549dde8
Yuma gets jealous very easily about things related to Tomoe, and a lot of this gets directed towards Yoshiyuki. Even though she knows that it's completely impossible for them to ever get in a relationship, that doesn't stop her thoughts from tormenting her. As such, she's often harsher towards him than anyone else. Despite this, she does want to overcome these thoughts and develop a friendship with him, but she doesn't know how to yet.

Kain Hagiwara92d8f4f38b89739f8c29709e61e2e1f5c44cc086
Kain and Yuma aren't exactly friends, but Yuma aspires to present herself in the same way she does. She admires how kind Kain is to others even when standing up for herself and how she's able to show her classmates her true feelings, and hopes she can be the same way someday.
