Ken Fujii (藤井剣  Fujī Ken) is a major character in Corpse Party: Forbidden Rebirth. He is a student of Misato Municipal Brotherhood High's classroom 2-4, and a victim of Heavenly Host Elementary School.

Ken is the true protagonist of BAD END, a playable character in TRUE END, a supporting character in GOOD END and REVERSE END, and the false protagonist of LOST END.

Design

Ken is a teenage boy of below average height, with steely blue eyes and black hair. His hair is always well brushed, but the natural texture of it often causes it to stick up in the back. He has thick eyebrows and wears silver rounded glasses at all times.

His usual school uniform consists of a black gakuran jacket, a white button up, black slacks and brown loafers. He wears a small purple and white badge underneath his breast pocket to identify him as the class representative. He also carries a blue bookbag with a sunflower on the flap.

Personality

Ken is the quiet and mature class representative from Misato Municipal Brotherhood High's class 2-4. Tactful, intelligent and down-to-earth, he has no problems with leading a situation or helping people in need, which allows him to easily fit into the role of class rep. Though he’s a quiet person by nature, he’s certainly not shy - he simply hates saying more than needs to be said, especially when it comes to his own emotions. He puts a great amount of thought into the words he speaks, and never says anything he doesn’t mean.

He’s extremely patient with each of his peers, wanting to ensure that everyone is treated fairly and all of their voices are being heard. The only person he’s tough on is his childhood friend, Akihiko Kagurazaka - the two have distinct clashing personalities, and Ken has learned the hard way that his soft, patient way of doing things doesn’t work on him. When it comes to Akihiko, he’s perfectly willing to use force and underhanded tactics to get him to comply, and often refers to him by his surname when he gets especially frustrated.

Despite his mature exterior, Ken is a very soft and sentimental person with a romantic heart. He cares deeply for his friends and classmates, and would sacrifice himself in an instant in order to protect them. This is especially true for Kokuhaku Akaboji and Akihiko, though he’s much harder on the latter. Having lost his mother at a young age, he secretly fears suddenly losing someone else important to him, and is willing to go to extreme measures to prevent such a thing from happening.

He enjoys studying plants, herbs and flowers, and works hard every day to achieve his goal of becoming a botanist when he’s older. He has a large garden in his backyard that he tends to on a daily basis, caring for the various plants and crops that grow there. He also finds world history very interesting, and values the chance to learn about the mistakes of the past to ensure they’re never repeated. Curious by nature, he recognizes how much the world around him has to offer and wants to take advantage of every opportunity to learn something new that comes his way.

After losing his mother, Ken became extremely close with his father, and appointed himself in charge of the household duties like cooking and cleaning. His father began working long hours to keep the house with the garden that his late wife had so carefully maintained, and Ken wanted to alleviate as much stress as he possibly could. Despite their bond, Ken has a bad habit of keeping many things a secret from him, not wanting his father to worry about him any more than he has to.

He likes to be able to put every moment of his time to good use, whether it’s tending to his plants, spending time with his father, or practicing piano. He despises wasting time and always feels there's something more he could be doing with it. When he gets stuck in this mindset, he has a habit of burning himself out, much to his dismay.

Plot

Backstory
As a child, Ken was raised in a small, traditionally styled house with his mother and father, with no siblings and no nearby relatives. Though his house was cozy, it had a large yard in the back, where his mother had started a flower garden when they'd moved in. Ken adored both of his parents and loved spending time with them, but his favourite part of the day was helping his mother water the garden and planting new seeds. His mother would often tell him facts about the plants they grew together, which sparked his interest in botany from a young age.

However, this life came to a screeching halt when his mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Although she managed it well at first, the disease had progressed so quickly that it wasn't long until it took her life. Even though he was only nine years old, Ken took over as the primary caretaker of the garden, studying all the books his mother had in the house to make sure he could care for everything properly on his own.

Following his mother’s death, Ken’s father, Hajime, fell into depression and frequently struggled to get out of bed every day for work. As such, Ken did whatever he could to make his life easier - packing his lunch for him, sorting through the mail, keeping the house clean, and so on. The two mutually supported each other, leading them to have a very close bond. Although Hajime's work schedule became busier in order to make enough money to keep the house (and the garden), he still consistently makes as much time as he can for Ken every day. Ken holds very high respect for him for overcoming the hardships he’s been through, and although he no longer requires as much assistance in his daily life as he did before, he still does what he can to ensure his father is happy.

Despite Ken's closeness with his father, he still hides some things from him, particularly when it comes to his emotions. He hates the idea of making him worry, and knows how it would affect him if something bad were to happen to him. As such, when he feels upset, he keeps it to himself, which frequently leads to him crying alone in his room or in the backyard so his father doesn't hear him. Likewise, when he gets injured, he usually keeps it a secret, not wanting Hajime to feel like he has to watch over him and keep him safe. Although he does this out of his own volition, it often leads to him feeling lonely and isolated.

He hates acknowledging it, but losing his mother made him more paranoid about losing his friends as well. When a young Akihiko fell from their treehouse and broke a few bones, Ken panicked and cried the whole way to the hospital. Though he knew that Akihiko's life was in no danger, the heat of the moment convinced him he was going to lose him too - even though it only made them grow closer, he still looks back on it with embarrassment.

Heavenly Host

If you know nothing about Corpse Party, be sure to read through this quick glossary first! It'll make a lot of terminology easier when reading this section!

Prologue
Ken, along with a few other classmates, were invited to classroom 2-4 after school by Tomoe Mizuki. Once everyone had gathered, she presented the Sachiko Ever After charm and explained its' significance to the group, before inviting them all to perform the ritual with her. The ritual involved holding a paper Sachiko doll in a circle, chanting and tearing the doll to pieces. Once everyone agreed and understood the rules, they tore apart the paper doll, and Ken put his scrap in his breast pocket for safekeeping. Shortly after the ceremony, an earthquake occurred and opened a gaping hole in the floor that he and the others all fell through, leading them to Heavenly Host Elementary School.

TRUE END
A short while later, he awoke to find himself completely confined to the second wing of the school, with many of the classrooms inside being inaccessible as well. With not many options or things to do, he spent a lot of his time either sitting in the school's music room, or investigating the staff room. Although being inside the staff room gave him a terrible feeling, he managed to find a collection of newspapers inside, which he took back to the music room to read. Through these papers, he learned about the murder cases of the three child spirits, as well as the research Kou Kibiki had done on the school and the multiple closed spaces that made it up. Thanks to Kibiki’s report, he also learned the proper way to perform the Sachiko Ever After charm, which was also the key to escaping Heavenly Host - however, it couldn't be done until everyone in the group was back together again. Ken decided that once he figured a way out of the second wing, he'd try and find Tomoe and explain it all to her so everyone could get back home. When he was done reading, he returned the papers to the staff room to keep them from getting lost, only to hear a lock click as he exited, rendering one of the two open rooms in the second wing inaccessible.

With almost nothing left to do, Ken spent his time either aimlessly wandering the halls or sitting in the music room. Although it did bring him a vague sense of comfort, as he played the piano at home, he became desperate for a sign of life anywhere in the school. The air was completely stagnant, and the building was quiet enough to hear a pin drop, and it was starting to drive him crazy. So, when Kokuhaku suddenly showed up in the music room doorway, he didn't even think twice about her odd behaviour and strange look on her face, and immediately ran over to give her a hug and check on her. However, he stopped short when she raised her hand and dug a pair of scissors into his chest.

Without removing the weapon, Kokuhaku dragged Ken, still alive and half-conscious, to the main building of the school - despite the fact the main entrance wouldn't open before, it was now working perfectly. She took his body to the school's basement and dropped it in the body pool, leaving it to the child spirits to finish him off.

GOOD END
Similarly to TRUE END, Ken was confined to the second wing of the school, and had very little to do but go back and forth between the staff room and the music room, collecting newspapers along the way. However, when he went to return a few of them to their proper place, he bumped into Tomoe and Yuma in the halls. Confused, he asked them how they'd gotten inside, but they said they had no issues with the door at all. Before he could ask any more questions, he noticed a figure approaching them, and instantly realized it was Kokuhaku. Relieved to see she was alive, he went to greet her, but was interrupted by Tomoe yelling something in another language, causing Kokuhaku to collapse. As he checked up on her, Akihiko came around the corner and joined the group. He explained that he saw Kokuhaku sprint out of the infirmary and had followed her, and Tomoe confirmed she'd been possessed and she'd exorcised the spirit from her body.

While they waited for her to wake up, Tomoe admitted that she knew where they were, and revealed a journal detailing information about the murders took place there, as she'd researched them in the past. Ken showed them the newspaper reports he’d found, consisting of the reports on the murder victims and the research done by Kou Kibiki, as well as the proper way to perform the Sachiko Ever After charm. Tomoe told them their best bet for escape was to figure out how to appease the spirits, and then perform the charm properly. Although Akihiko and Yuma were hesitant, they decided it was better than doing nothing, and with Ken carrying Kokuhaku on his back, the group set off to figure out a means of appeasement.

After Kokuhaku regained consciousness, he and the others took a break to update her with the new information they had. As they were resting by the side of the hallway, they were approached by a wandering blue spirit, who gave them the cursed doll to aid them in their escape. The spirit told them the doll was capable of giving them clues for how to appease the spirits that made up the school. Through the help of the doll's directions, they were able to retrieve the tongue of Ryou, one of the child spirits, and return it to him. However, after his repentance, Kokuhaku began to cry and revealed her fear of ghosts to them. Though stunned for a moment, Ken was quickly at her side, and he hugged her, promising to keep her safe and away from the other ghosts in the school.

Ryou's repentence unintentionally prevented Kain's death, and after appeasing another child spirit, Tokiko, they were able to meet up with her in the main building. She asked them if they'd seen Mitsuharu, but before anyone could answer, the distinct noise of something falling into the school's outdoor pool echoed through the hallway. Fearing the worst, the group ran outside to see the water rippling. Before anyone could stop her, Kain dove into the water, resurfacing a minute later with Mitsuharu's body - unconscious, but alive. After performing CPR, she was able to resuscitate him, much to everyone's relief. After he'd woken up though, the cursed doll told them the final tongue was in the pool, and, once Mitsuharu was ready, the group searched for the pump room key. Kokuhaku found it hooked on the chain link fence, and after emptying the pool, they retrieved the final child spirit, Yuki's eye and tongue from the drain.

After appeasing Yuki, the closed spaces merged together, and all ten classmates were reunited at last. Once regrouped, they discussed everything they'd found out about the school, from its' many closed spaces to the child spirits that made it up. Since it seemed like the spirits had been appeased, everyone agreed that now was the time to perform the ritual again. However, in the middle of performing the chant again to return home, there was an ear-piercing scream from the outdoor walkway that made everyone jump. Forgetting about the ritual for the moment, Ken and the group ran outside just in time to witness the principal fall from the school rooftop, stuck in a suicide loop. Without warning, everyone watched as Hatto silently climbed over the fence, waited for the principal to fall again, and picked up a key that had fallen on the ground next to him. The key was too small and dull to be visible, and everyone was confused as to how he'd seen it, but pushed their concerns to the side to pursue what was really important.

Tomoe reminded everyone of the sealed principal's office in the second wing, the one door that had remained locked the entire time, and they set out to open it. Unsurprisingly, the key worked, but the room itself just raised more questions. While investigating, Mitsuharu noticed a hidden switch in the space heater that opened a secret passage, and while searching the principal’s desk drawer, Ken found a fourth tongue. As he went to pick it up, he found his mind locked in a flashback, where he witnessed the death of another child, Sachiko Shinozaki. When he told the group what he saw, Tomoe confirmed there was a fourth victim in the case, although she was said to have survived - however, the tongue most certainly belonged to her. Filled with questions, the group descended the secret passage's ladder to get to the bottom of the story.

The passage led them to the abandoned bomb shelter, where Sachiko herself awaited them at the end.  Ken tried to offer her the tongue, but it only seemed to anger her further. They found themselves frozen in place, and she raised her scissors to Kokuhaku, ready to strike. Desperate to keep her safe, Ken pleaded with her enough for her to stab him instead, but in the split second she struck him, her power wavered enough for Shin to pull a black cat plushie from her bag and throw it at her. The tongue combined with the plushie was enough to make Sachiko repent, and her spirit was freed. Though the stab wound wasn't deep thanks to his jacket, the pain was still sharp, and he fought back tears as Akihiko and Kokuhaku checked on him. Tomoe urged the group to get out of the basement, as this was their only chance to escape. Akihiko gave his white button up to Ken to help stop the bleeding before they followed after their classmates. Him and the others made it to the outdoor walkway in time, and were freed from the school’s dimension.

Trivia

  • His favourite colour is mustard yellow.
  • His favourite foods include edamame, ninjin shirishiri, roasted soybeans, mushrooms, and apples.
    • He’s a vegetarian, so he’ll often substitute meat products for tofu, rice and quinoa when preparing meals. He grows most of his own vegetables in his backyard garden. Many of his favourite dishes originate from Okinawa, where both of his parents are from, and he’s learned to cook them with their guidance.
  • His favourite drink is jasmine tea.
    • He loves green teas, and jasmine tea is his favourite by far. He pretends to drink it by itself, but secretly adds sugar as a bit of a treat.
  • His least favourite food is grilled beef.
    • He doesn’t particularly like meat in general, hence why he’s on a strictly vegetarian diet. It also kind of makes him sad to eat animals, but he would never admit to that.
  • When it comes to his meal habits, being the kind of person who needs to organize everything perfectly, meal prep is one of his favourite things - knowing exactly what he’s going to eat the next day makes things much less stressful for him. He hardly ever eats out, and is typically the one who prepares breakfast and dinner while his father works. He puts a lot of effort into his bento boxes and will even make cute designs out of food while he makes them, but he gets extremely embarrassed if anyone points this out.
  • When it comes to his sleep habits, he’s always up early to prepare breakfast for his father and to tend to his garden before the sun makes it unbearably hot, so he tries to go to bed at a good time every night. There are times where he’ll get lost in a book though, and end up staying up late just to see how it ends. No matter how tired he is, he always wakes up for his alarm. When he’s asleep, he has a habit of cuddling up to a pillow without realizing. There are times where he has nightmares about losing his father or friends in accidents that sometimes keep him awake, and he occasionally accidentally falls asleep in the library later in the day.
  • He uses the personal pronoun "boku" when referring to himself.
  • He has autism, major depressive disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
  • Whenever he tends to his garden, he wears a sunhat that previously belonged to his mother.
