Mitsuharu Ohtaki (大滝光春 Ōtaki Mitsuharu) is a major character in Corpse Party: Forbidden Rebirth. He is a student of Misato Municipal Brotherhood High's classroom 2-4, Takahiro Ohtaki's younger brother, and a victim of Heavenly Host Elementary School.

Mitsuharu is a playable character in TRUE END, a supporting character in GOOD END, BAD END and LOST END, and a main character in REVERSE END.

Design

Mitsuharu is a teenage boy of average height, with dark green hair and brown eyes. His hair is quite curly, and tends to do what it wants, even if he tries to brush it. He has noticable eyelashes under his eyes, and freckles along the bridge of his nose and cheeks. He always wears a bandage on the left side of his jaw, which covers up a scar sustained from an unknown attack - he refuses to tell the story behind it. He has one helix piercing on his right ear, but previously had more when he was younger.

His usual school uniform consists of a blue and white track jacket with the Misato Municipal Brotherhood High emblem on it, a white collared shirt, a dark gray t-shirt, black slacks and black and white sneakers. He wears a black tie purely for accessory, and has many colourful bandages littering his arms. He has a scar on the palm of his right hand, and wears a blue and orange beaded bracelet on his left wrist - a matching friendship bracelet with Kain.

Personality

Mitsuharu is a carefree and relaxed boy from Misato Municipal Brotherhood High's class 2-4. A class clown-type who never takes anything seriously, he tries to find humour in every scenario, which can frustrate others from time to time. He's good at keeping his cool in most situations, and rarely overreacts or shows a lot of emotion, though some may take this as him being uninterested. He has an odd and somewhat off-putting way of speaking, and finds that his teachers either love or despise him, no in-between.

At first glance, Mitsuharu seems to be a semi-normal teenager, if not a bit quirky and strange. When you look closer though, you realize he always has the same signature smirk on his face, and that’s intentional. The truth is that Mitsuharu’s emotions are either extremely strong or non-existent - a multitude of personality disorders cause his emotions to swing wildly at the drop of a hat. Over the years, he’s perfected the art of shutting himself down and limiting his emotional output, but in stressful situations (such as when he feels his best friend, Kain Hagiwara is being threatened), his true feelings come out with no restraint.

Mitsuharu is somewhat infamous for his crazy ideas and wild plans - he always likes to be doing some sort of activity in order to keep his mind in the moment. Between being on the basketball team and the drummer slash rapper of Electric Dreams, a band created by his childhood friend Akihiko Kagurazaka, he hardly has any free time to spare. Despite this, he spends what little down time he gets skateboarding, spray painting, riding the train all the way to the end, or even pulling some less-than-legal stunts - whatever it takes to keep his brain busy.

Though his rebellious side has calmed down a bit in his high school years, he detests the majority of authority figures, police officers in particular. A lot of his hatred stems from his abusive father, who has been the police chief of Misato for a number of years. Regardless of whether they’re cops, uptight teachers, or even members of the student council, he hates being told what to do and will go out of his way to do the opposite if they get on his nerves enough. The only person he’ll listen to without question is Kain.

He’ll often flat-out lie when asked any questions about his family, typically saying that his father is the greatest person ever or stating that he’s an only child, despite his older brother Takahiro attending the same school as him. He simply doesn’t want to get into it with anyone, even if they’re a close friend - he doesn’t think it’s worth discussing or that anyone needs to know about what he’s been through. Despite this, his dry remarks are often a good enough indication to anyone listening about the kind of relationship his family has.

In contrast to the cold relationship he has with his father and brother, he idolizes his mother, Gloria, whom he’s never met before. He doesn’t blame her for leaving the family, knowing he would do the same in her situation, and feels as though if he could simply meet her one day, then everything would be alright. He’s spent the last few years trying to uncover her identity and location, though he’s had no luck so far.

Despite his plentiful physical strength and love for sports, Mitsuharu cannot swim - his father would routinely hold him underwater for extended periods of time as a child, so he has no desire to learn or even get near a body of water. Many of their friends consider this ironic, since Kain is the star of the Misato swim team. The two usually choose to wrestle instead, and although Mitsuharu jokes and teases her about always winning, it’s all in good fun.

Plot

Backstory
When he was born, Mitsuharu's family seemed normal to anyone looking in from the outside. Consisting of his mother, father and older brother, Takahiro, their family was as plain as ever, even with his father being more on the strict side. But when his mother suddenly disappeared when he was just a few months old, leaving both children in the custody of their father, things took a turn for the worst.

It started out small when he was younger - his father would get angry at him over little inconsequential things for seemingly no reason. As he got older, the treatment only got worse, becoming more violent and physical, resulting in plenty of bruises and cuts that he passed off as being from schoolyard fights whenever anyone asked. However, the real salt in the wound was that Takahiro faced none of the torture that he did - he was instead praised for his grades, and conditioned to think Mitsuharu was a horrible person for not doing as well as he was. This led to Takahiro teaming up with his father to mock and abuse him, causing Mitsuharu to develop both an inferiority complex and a hatred for his brother.

The abuse he faced didn't make Mitsuharu want to try harder, and instead, he decided to rebel against his father in retaliation. He refused to do his schoolwork, despite being perfectly capable of completing it, and began spending more nights sneaking out of the house until sunrise and skipping class. By junior high, he was well known as a delinquent by both his peers and his teachers, and was shunned and avoided by both.

Once he started getting into physical fights at school, he ended up in the counsellor's office more often, resulting in more punishment and the occasional suspension. This only aggravated his home situation, and for a while, his life was an absolute living hell, turning him to bad coping mechanisms to feel better. For a while, the majority of his time was consumed by drinking, stealing cigarettes from his father and engaging in risky sexual encounters. It wasn't until a particularly bad fight near the end of his last year of junior high, in which the school’s counsellor forcefully enrolled him in a juvenile support group to him, that recovery seemed like an option. Although he wasn't all that interested in attending the group, he knew that not going would likely result in another suspension, and decided to go in order to humour the counsellor.

Although the first session didn't really do anything for him, he decided to continue going, if only to get the school off his back - plus, it gave him a reason to be out of the house at night twice a week without getting a beating later. It was two weeks into the program before he met Kain Hagiwara, his soon-to-be best friend - she was the only person in the group he had any sort of interest in, which was more because he thought she was cute than anything else. Although she seemed afraid of him at first, they quickly grew close as she chipped away at the bitter mask he had on, eventually revealing the goofy, kind person that Mitsuharu always was. Before long, the two of them became inseparable best friends.

In his first year of high school, Mitsuharu became far more outgoing, joining both the school's basketball team and taking up Akihiko's offer to be the drummer in his band. With both activities requiring dedication and commitment, plus the amount of time he spent with Kain, he rarely ever returned home unless he absolutely needed to.

Heavenly Host

If you know nothing about Corpse Party, be sure to read through this quick glossary first! It'll make a lot of terminology easier when reading this section!

Prologue
Mitsuharu, along with a few other classmates, were invited to classroom 2-4 after school by Tomoe Mizuki. Once everyone had gathered, she presented the Sachiko Ever After charm and explained its' significance to the group, before inviting them all to perform the ritual with her. The ritual involved holding a paper Sachiko doll in a circle, chanting and tearing the doll to pieces. Once everyone agreed and understood the rules, they tore apart the paper doll, and Mitsuharu put his scrap in his pants pocket for safekeeping. Shortly after the ceremony, an earthquake occurred and opened a gaping hole in the floor that he and the others all fell through, leading them to Heavenly Host Elementary School.

TRUE END
Not long after, he awoke to find himself in the old school building, but was able to keep calm thanks to his naturally relaxed personality. Despite this, he was still intent on finding Kain and Akihiko and making sure they were safe. However, after surveying the school and finding nothing but locked doors and bodies of students he didn't recognize, he became frustrated and more concerned about the situation. He kicked at the school's entrance door in anger, but it refused to open, as did any of the other locked classrooms throughout the building. Running out of ideas, he decided to leave a message for Kain on the teacher's desk of one of the open classrooms in case they accidentally passed each other somehow.

Although there wasn't much else he could do, he didn't want to give up so easily. He continued searching the school, but just ended up running in circles and not making much progress at all. The only clue he found that any of his classmates were there was a purple bow that clearly belonged to Tomoe - however, it was all by itself on the ground, with no indication she was anywhere nearby. When he bent down to pick it up, a sudden earthquake occurred, shaking the whole building and causing the bow to fall through one of the cracks in the floor. Unbeknownst to him, these earthquakes enabled him to shift through the different closed spaces of Heavenly Host, and when the dust settled, the hallway had changed and now led to the outdoor walkway, allowing him to access the second wing.

Even with access to the other half of the school, though, the halls were completely empty with the exception of a few corpses here and there. Although most of the classrooms were open here, the staff room and music room were still locked tight, and no matter how much he kicked at them, they wouldn't budge. The hours he'd spent walking around exerting his energy were getting to him, and he decided to take a short break and see if his phone had any signal. However, as he sat down, he noticed the spirit of a young girl in a red dress walking his way. She didn't seem take notice of him though - instead, she turned towards the staff room and slid the door open with ease before closing it behind her. Mitsuharu jumped to his feet and tried to yank the door open, resulting in him falling when it opened much more easily than he'd expected it to.

He got back on his feet quickly and glanced inside the room, but couldn't see anything due to how dark it was. Using his phone as a light, he was able to make out desks and a few chairs, but there was no sign of the girl who'd entered, or much else for that matter. He accidentally tripped over something on the ground, and quickly spun around to shine his light on it, only to discover it was Kain, who seemed to have died only a few minutes ago.

He didn't even have time to read the message she was clutching in her hand before the darkening began to overtake him. He could feel himself screaming, but the noise failed to reach his ears, which were instead pierced by a loud ringing. Thick, black smoke clouded his vision, and a wave of nausea caused him to vomit a tar-like substance onto the ground. His mind and body ultimately disconnected from one another, and he was briefly left in a lobotomized state before the darkening consumed his body, causing it to dissolve into black ash on the floor.

GOOD END
Similarly to TRUE END, Mitsuharu kept himself calm while exploring Heavenly Host, but was prone to bouts of frustration and anger when things didn't go his way. After being granted access to the second wing though, he wasn't immediately consumed by the darkening, since Kain hadn't died. As such, it instead grew on him at a much slower rate, allowing him to stay alive, but also causing a massive buildup of negative emotions. This buildup eventually began to take control of his mind, causing his spirit to fade in and out of reality as his body went on autopilot. This resulted in him jumping into the school's outdoor pool, despite not knowing how to swim, and subsequently caused him to lose consciousness.

The next thing he knew, he was on the ground surrounding the pool, with Kain, Akihiko, Tomoe, Yuma, Ken and Kokuhaku looming over top of him. As soon as he woke up, Kain and Akihiko jumped on him and gave him a huge hug. He had no recollection of jumping into the pool, nor any idea how he'd gotten there to begin with, but was just relieved to finally be reunited with his friends at last. He was embarrassed about the fact that Kain had needed to perform CPR on him, but pushed it aside, considering she'd just saved his life.

Not long after he'd woken up, a small, child-like voice began to speak to them. This turned out to be the cursed doll, one of the items the group had acquired before they'd found him. The doll told them the final tongue, one of the items needed to appease the child spirits and escape Heavenly Host, was located in the pool. Once he was ready, he and the others searched for the pump room key. Kokuhaku found it hooked on the chain link fence, and after emptying the pool, they retrieved the final child spirit, Yuki's eye and tongue from the drain.

As the group had already appeased the other two child spirits, after appeasing Yuki, the closed spaces merged together and all ten classmates were reunited at last. Once regrouped, they discussed everything they'd found out about the school, from its' many closed spaces to the child spirits that made it up. Since it seemed like the spirits had been appeased, everyone agreed that now was the time to perform the ritual again. However, in the middle of performing the chant again to return home, there was an ear-piercing scream from the outdoor walkway that made everyone jump. Forgetting about the ritual for the moment, Mitsuharu and the group ran outside just in time to witness the principal fall from the school rooftop, stuck in a suicide loop. Without warning, everyone watched as Hatto silently climbed over the fence, waited for the principal to fall again, and picked up a key that had fallen on the ground next to him. The key was too small and dull to be visible, and everyone was confused as to how he'd seen it, but pushed their concerns to the side to pursue what was really important.

Tomoe reminded everyone that there was a sealed principal's office in the second wing, and they set out to open it. Unsurprisingly, the key worked, but the room itself just raised more questions. While investigating, Mitsuharu noticed a hidden switch in the space heater, and when he flipped it, it opened a secret passage that led downstairs. Ken found a fourth tongue inside the principal’s desk drawer, and he told everyone that touching the tongue caused him to experience a flashback to another child’s murder. Tomoe confirmed there was a fourth victim in the case, although she was said to have survived - however, the tongue most certainly belonged to her. Filled with questions, the group descended the secret passage's ladder to get to the bottom of the story.

The passage led them to the abandoned bomb shelter, where Sachiko herself awaited them at the end.  Ken tried to offer her the tongue, but it only seemed to anger her further. They found themselves frozen in place, and she raised her scissors to Kokuhaku, ready to strike. Ken pleaded with her enough for her to stab him instead, but in the split second she struck him, her power wavered enough for Shin to pull a black cat plushie from her bag and throw it at her. The tongue combined with the plushie was enough to make Sachiko repent, and her spirit was freed. Tomoe urged the group to get out of the basement, as this was their only chance to escape. With barely any time to spare, he and the others made it to the outdoor walkway in time, and were freed from the school’s dimension.

Relationships

Kain Hagiwara92d8f4f38b89739f8c29709e61e2e1f5c44cc086
Kain is both Mitsuharu's closest friend and crush, and the two are practically inseparable from each other. Although he only approached her because he thought she was cute, their relationship grew extremely fast, and he sleeps over at her house more often than not. She means more to him than anyone else on Earth, though he's too embarrassed to ever admit that to her. Although she often has to keep him in line, especially when it comes to schoolwork, he's also good at reminding her to let loose sometimes and relax. He does want to confess to her, but is worried that doing so would ruin their friendship, which would devastate him.

Three months after the events of GOOD END, following a series of accidents, they end up in a relationship together.

Akihiko Kagurazaka14f2c7e2be49f96bcfc3555a0291635692574f02
Akihiko is Mitsuharu's "brother in arms", so to speak - both of them are also childhood friends, and are something of a chaotic force together. They end up fueling each other's stupid ideas, which often leads them to trouble when they aren't careful enough. Although they're wild together, they also balance each other out well - with Akihiko's more emotional and childish outlook on life and Mitsuharu's rough, street-smart viewpoint, their natures work well together when it comes to their band, Electric Dreams.

Shin Aichi669bcd7e8d0b00211c40af06095e6df7e81ea375
Since Kain and Shin are close friends, Mitsuharu usually ends up hanging out with her as well. The three of them, along with Akihiko, often hang out and watch movies together or go out to eat on the weekends. Shin often makes food for Mitsuharu too, since she knows how hungry he is all the time. He treats her like a little sister, even though she's a year above him in school.

Trivia

  • His favourite colour is yellow.
  • He'll eat just about anything.
  • He is half Honduran on his mother's side.
  • He wants to adopt a golden retriever after he finally moves out.
  • The scar underneath the bandage on his face came from an attack from his father, in which he pushed his face against a hot stove top, burning his cheek and jaw badly.
  • He was previously a smoker, but quit in his first year of high school.
  • He has ADHD, autism, dissociative amnesia, obsessive-compulsive disorder and bipolar disorder. He doesn’t know this and isn’t diagnosed.
  • He is bisexual.
