Kain Hagiwara (萩原海音 Hagiwara Kain) is a major character in Corpse Party: Forbidden Rebirth. She is a student of Misato Municipal Brotherhood High's classroom 2-4, Shinju Hagiwara's younger sister, and a victim of Heavenly Host Elementary School.

Kain is a playable character in TRUE END, a supporting character in GOOD END, REVERSE END and LOST END, and a main character in BAD END.

Design

Kain is a teenager of average height, with light blue eyes and silver hair that ends just above her shoulders. She wears a light blue hairband to keep her hair in place, and has two helix studs on her left ear.

Her usual school uniform consists of a prussian blue sailor fuku with a white tie and a skirt that ends at her knees. With it, she wears a pair of blue and white striped thigh highs and brown loafers. She has a blue and orange beaded bracelet around her right wrist - a matching friendship bracelet with Mitsuharu.

Personality

Kain is a cheerful, determined student from Misato Municipal Brotherhood High's class 2-4. Loved by her peers and teachers for both her talent and smarts alike, Kain is the star swimmer on the school’s swim team and has set multiple records since debuting in her first year of high school. Not only that, she’s also a dedicated student with some of the best marks in her grade - her favourite subject is math, and she regularly attends cram school in the evening to continue studying it.

Despite her popularity, Kain remains modest about her achievements, never flaunting her talents or showing off in front of others. Surprisingly, she isn’t good at receiving praise from people, especially those who aren’t particularly close with her - in most cases, she becomes embarrassed and loses her train of thought, and is typically not able to get out much more than a “thank you” in response. The only person she intentionally shows off in front of is her best friend, Mitsuharu Ohtaki - the two of them often playfully wrestle even in the middle of school, and Kain always taunts him by saying she's stronger, despite him winning almost every time. However, it's always in good fun, and no harm is ever done.

She comes across as someone who wears her heart on her sleeve, but in reality, Kain often masks her intense emotions, such as anger and embarrassment, with a forced smile until she's alone. As soon as she’s by herself, she lets her true emotions come out, typically by screeching into or punching a pillow. Although she's very open with people, she hates the idea of sharing her negative feelings with them, and will intentionally keep them bottled up as much as possible.

To those who don’t know her, she tends to give off the vibe of a delinquent. With her atypical piercings, loud voice and tendency to wrestle with Mitsuharu anywhere (including the school hallways), she’s occasionally perceived as a class-cutting troublemaker, which has gotten her into hot water with some of the school’s gang members. Despite this, she’s very much a teacher’s pet who hasn’t even stolen a piece of gum before, and she occasionally has to rely on the words of Mitsuharu and his rival Mikio Fukuhara to absolve her of any issues with the delinquent crowd.

Kain hates deviating from her set routines for any reason - she follows the same steps when she gets ready in the morning, studies at the same times every day of the week, and follows a strict ritual when she goes to sleep. She struggles to deal with major life changes, and craves stability in her life more than anything - she was forced to move frequently as a child due to her parent’s ever-growing business, and all she wants is to have a place she can settle down permanently. Deviating from her habits in any way can be enough to trigger an emotional breakdown, much to her embarrassment.

Though she needs to have a stable home life and routine, Kain loves going on adventures - the only time she’s willing to break her routine is if she spots a place she’d like to explore. She grew up surrounded by nature, and is comfortable venturing into thick forests and diving into deep lakes with no questions asked. She disliked living in the city, as she felt like there was no element of magic or surprise in the concrete jungle - to her, everything just looked the same. She’s much happier after moving to Misato, and tries to turn even simple things like a trip to the convenience store into a mini-adventure somehow.

While she dislikes being alone, Kain is very self-sufficient and has no issues taking care of herself, as she was often on her own as a child while her parents worked and her sister attended school. Despite her best efforts though, she's hopeless at cooking - it’s difficult for her to follow vague instructions, so she has a habit of using too much or too little of ingredients. Because of this, almost nothing she tries to make is edible, and she typically has to rely on her sister Shinju or her friends when it comes to making food.

Plot

Backstory
When she was younger, Kain lived in the small town of Tateshina in Nagano Prefecture, where her parents ran a small-but-growing business. She had lots of friends, her parents were relatively well-off because of their business, and there was so much to be explored in nature - to her, she had it all. Every day after school, she would climb the large trees around her house and swim in the nearby lake. It was almost magical, and, being a child, she didn't think it would ever end.

However, due to her parent’s business continuing to bloom, she was suddenly forced to move into a small, cramped apartment in the bustling city of Yokohama, taking her away from her friends and the scenery she loved so much. She didn't adjust well to the move at all - even after living there for a few months, the city was too loud for her, and it was difficult to make friends in such a big middle school, especially when everyone's circles had already been established. With her sister, Shinju diligently studying away most days and her parents beginning to go overseas for business, Kain found herself lonelier than ever.

In an attempt to get back on her feet, Kain tried out for the junior soccer team at her school, and quickly discovered just how much fun sports were. She found herself being accepted into friend groups as she furthered her skills, and it finally seemed like things were looking up for her - until yet another business development caused her family to move to Tokyo, forcing Kain to restart from scratch all over again.

Having figured out that relocating every year was going to be the norm from now on, Kain decided that she was no longer going to try and make friends or commitments if she was just going to have to throw them away later. After transferring to Musashino City Junior High, she spent the majority of her time studying and handing in papers, not speaking to any of her classmates or joining any clubs. It was a painful thing to do, especially because of how social of a person she was, but she knew it was for the better - after all, she wasn't going to be there for very long.

Near the end of her final year, Shinju, now twenty one, approached Kain and asked her if she'd like to move somewhere new - somewhere they could stay permanently. As their parents now had a large, steady income, they'd sat down with Shinju and offered to pay for a place for her if she wanted to move out, and they would keep the Tokyo apartment. She said yes on the condition that Kain could stay with her too, which was agreed upon, since their parents were usually away for work anyways. Kain instantly agreed, and the two moved to Misato near the end of February, just after Kain finished middle school.

Following the move, Shinju admitted she'd been worried about her and the way she'd been acting. She apologized sincerely for not being there for her enough during her middle school years, and mentioned she'd heard about a support group in the area that might be good for her to make friends. Although reluctant, Kain decided to go, as the concept of making friends before the school year even started was definitely appealing to her. It was there that she met her soon-to-be best friend Mitsuharu Ohtaki, though he was a much different person at the time. Despite his previously bitter personality, the two quickly became inseparable from each other.

During the school year, Kain joined the school's swim team and very quickly became one of the most popular girls on the team. The following summer, after receiving her lifeguard certification, she began working part-time at the local pool, allowing her to save up some funds to go to college after high school.

Heavenly Host

If you know nothing about Corpse Party, be sure to read through this quick glossary first! It'll make a lot of terminology easier when reading this section!

Prologue
Kain, along with a few other classmates, were invited to classroom 2-4 after school by Tomoe Mizuki. Once everyone had gathered, she presented the Sachiko Ever After charm and explained its' significance to the group, before inviting them all to perform the ritual with her. The ritual involved holding a paper Sachiko doll in a circle, chanting and tearing the doll to pieces. Once everyone agreed and understood the rules, they tore apart the paper doll, and Kain put her scrap in her student ID holder for safekeeping. Shortly after the ceremony, an earthquake occurred and opened a gaping hole in the floor that she and the others all fell through, leading them to Heavenly Host Elementary School.

TRUE END
Not long after, she awoke to find herself in the old, run-down school building and, as scared as she was, felt determined to find Mitsuharu and get back home. She surveyed the school quickly, but didn't find a single person she knew, frustrating her to tears. As she rested at the side of the hallway and planned her next course of action, she was approached by one of the wandering spirits, who explained the closed spaces of the school - even if she was in the same place as her friends, they existed in different realities and it was highly unlikely they'd ever see each other. Although the spirit was extremely pessimistic, Kain took their words as a challenge to figure out how to cross the spaces and see everyone again. She decided to document her findings, and used some of the paper that littered the school's walls to do so.

Despite her best efforts, her progress in crossing spaces was extremely limited. She didn't have any spiritual power, not to mention she was still alive and not a ghost, so purposely crossing them on her own without external factors was essentially impossible. As such, she started using the paper to write about her feelings in order to keep herself sane. Her topics varied, from her sister to her classes, but most of what she wrote was about Mitsuharu and how badly she wanted to see him again. However, once she finished, she immediately felt embarrassed and threw the paper scrap into one of the holes in the floor.

A short while later though, she found herself writing again, less about the closed spaces and more for the sake of her mental health. However, by her third entry, she had some small progress to report - Mitsuharu had left her a note on the teacher's desk in one of the classrooms, and it had somehow transferred over to her space. Wondering if they were in the same dimension now, she scouted the halls again to find the second wing of the school had opened up to her. Although this initially gave her hope, the air in the second building was so heavy that she told herself she couldn't stay in there too long.

After a few hours of circling the buildings with no luck, she rested briefly in one of the stairways and thought about what to do next. In her exhausted state, she hadn't noticed one of the child spirits, Ryou, crouched beneath the staircase. He dug his scissors into her ankle, causing her to jolt her leg away and accidentally tear her Achilles tendon. She left a hastily written note for Mitsuharu, hoping he would recognize her handwriting, and fled the stairway as fast as she could with her injuries. However, between the blood loss and the difficulty of moving with an injured foot, it wasn't long until she collapsed. She used the last of her energy to write a final message to Mitsuharu, hoping he would find it before it was too late.

GOOD END
Like in TRUE END, after waking up in Heavenly Host, Kain's biggest goals were to find Mitsuharu and get back home. She was aware of the closed spaces, thanks to the spirit that educated her on them, and had written the first two entries of her makeshift journal before she encountered any of her classmates. Although she didn't know it, a few of them had managed to appease Ryou, which unintentionally prevented her death and, after appeasing Tokiko as well, merged their spaces together. As such, she was able to meet up with Kokuhaku, Ken, Akihiko, Tomoe and Yuma in the school's front hallway.

Although relieved and happy to see them, she was nervous that Mitsuharu wasn't among the group, and asked if any of them had seen him. However, before anyone could answer, the distinct noise of something falling into the school's outdoor pool echoed through the hallway.  Knowing Mitsuharu couldn't swim, she immediately feared the worst, and the group ran outside to see the water rippling. Before anyone could try and stop her, Kain dove into the water, resurfacing a minute later with Mitsuharu's body - unconscious, but alive. Though she was panicking on the inside, she put herself in the mindset of her part-time job, performed CPR, and was able to resuscitate him, much to everyone's relief. After he'd woken up though, a small, child-like voice began to speak to them. This turned out to be the cursed doll, one of the items the group had acquired before she got there. The doll told them the final tongue, one of the items needed to appease the child spirits and escape Heavenly Host, was located in the pool. Once Mitsuharu was ready, the group searched for the pump room key. Kokuhaku found it hooked on the chain link fence, and after emptying the pool, they retrieved the final child spirit, Yuki's eye and tongue from the drain.

As the group had already appeased the other two child spirits, after appeasing Yuki, the closed spaces merged together and all ten classmates were reunited at last. Once regrouped, they discussed everything they'd found out about the school, from its' many closed spaces to the child spirits that made it up. Since it seemed like the spirits had been appeased, everyone agreed that now was the time to perform the ritual again. However, in the middle of performing the chant again to return home, there was an ear-piercing scream from the outdoor walkway that made everyone jump. Forgetting about the ritual for the moment, Kain and the group ran outside just in time to witness the principal fall from the school rooftop, stuck in a suicide loop. Without warning, everyone watched as Hatto silently climbed over the fence, waited for the principal to fall again, and picked up a key that had fallen on the ground next to him. The key was too small and dull to be visible, and everyone was confused as to how he'd seen it, but pushed their concerns to the side to pursue what was really important.

Tomoe reminded everyone that there was a sealed principal's office in the second wing, and they set out to open it. Unsurprisingly, the key worked, but the room itself just raised more questions. While investigating, Mitsuharu noticed a hidden switch in the space heater that opened a secret passage, and Ken found a fourth tongue inside the principal’s desk drawer. He told everyone that touching the tongue caused him to experience a flashback to another child’s murder, and Tomoe confirmed there was a fourth victim in the case, although she was said to have survived - however, the tongue most certainly belonged to her. Filled with questions, the group descended the secret passage's ladder to get to the bottom of the story.

The passage led them to the abandoned bomb shelter, where Sachiko herself awaited them at the end.  Ken tried to offer her the tongue, but it only seemed to anger her further. They found themselves frozen in place, and she raised her scissors to Kokuhaku, ready to strike. Ken pleaded with her enough for her to stab him instead, but in the split second she struck him, her power wavered enough for Shin to pull a black cat plushie from her bag and throw it at her. The tongue combined with the plushie was enough to make Sachiko repent, and her spirit was freed. Tomoe urged the group to get out of the basement, as this was their only chance to escape. With barely any time to spare, she and the others made it to the outdoor walkway in time, and were freed from the school’s dimension.

Epilogue (GOOD END)
After returning to reality, Kain's life went back to normal fairly quickly. As she neared the end of her second year of high school, the pressure that came with choosing a career began to catch up with her, as she still had no idea what she wanted to do with her life. However, she was lucky enough to have some of the highest grades in her class, and, coupled with her strong self-motivation, she had a plethora of options to choose from. She spent her summer communicating with one of her teachers via email, discussing her opportunities and interests and trying to figure out just what she wanted to do for a career. In the end, she narrowed in on a job as an aquatic veterinarian - marine life was already something she was interested in to begin with, so it only made sense for her to choose a job that would both pay her well and involve one of her passions. With an end goal in mind, Kain felt safer and stronger as she entered her third year of high school.

As she always had, Kain spent her third year studying hard and pursuing extra classes, which left her with very little free time outside of schoolwork. However, one Friday night, she found herself particularly bored, having already finished her assignments for the weekend. As such, she decided to attend one of the parties Akihiko frequently hosted - he'd invited her plenty of times before, but this was the first time she'd actually been able to make time to go. Once she arrived, she met up with Mitsuharu and decided to just spend her time relaxing on one of the couches with him, since she didn't really know anyone else there. However, because this was her first time attending, she didn't realize Akihiko's parties weren't alcohol-free - she assumed they were since they weren't old enough to drink, but was unaware that he tended to invite older guests as well. Because of this, she didn't think twice when grabbing a drink of what she assumed to be juice, but was actually a spiked drink.

As the hours passed, she became increasingly more intoxicated as she realized far too late that whatever she'd been drinking wasn't actually juice at all. Beside her, Mitsuharu was buzzed as well, though not to the same degree. As he was still slightly sober, he tried his best to keep an eye on her, since both of them knew she hadn't really drank before and her limits hadn't been established. Despite this, as the party progressed, it eventually came down to the two of them having a drunken make-out session with each other on the couch. Unbeknownst to them, Akihiko noticed it and snapped a photo of them, hoping to tease Mitsuharu with it later on.

The following morning, Kain woke up in her bed with a massive headache and only a blurry recollection of what went on. As she tried to recall the events of the night before, she remembered what happened with Mitsuharu - the make-out session, as well as him carrying her home and putting her to bed. She was too embarrassed of what they'd done to bring herelf to text him, so she decided to wait until he texted her first talk things over. However, the weekend came and went without a single text from him, which only made her dread the coming Monday even more.

She dragged herself to school the following morning, only to encounter Mitsuharu in the halls - but, out of embarrassment and anxiety, she avoided him completely. This routine ended up carrying on for the entire week, with one avoiding the other every time they almost came into contact with each other. Lost and not wanting to share her worries with her friends in fear of them getting involved, Kain vented to her sister about the situation and how she desperately wanted to work things out between them. Shinju advised her to just try and talk to him and see how he responded, and Kain decided that if he hadn't said anything to her by the end of school on Friday, she would try it.

As the school day came to a close that Friday, she rehearsed what she was going to do - after her practice with the school's swim team, she was going to go to his house, knock on his window, apologize and ask if they could at least still be friends. It seemed like a simple enough plan in her head, and once she exited the locker room, she felt more confident than ever. However, her plan was instantly thrown into shambles when someone pulled her into the custodian's closet. With wide eyes, she looked up to see Mitsuharu, who quickly noticed the scared look on her face and apologized, admitting he didn't know how else to get her alone.

The two sat in awkward silence for a moment before Mitsuharu apologized for what happened during the party, and admitted he'd only been avoiding her because he thought she was upset with him. Still somewhat disoriented from the whole situation, Kain told him she wasn't upset at all, and, on impulse, confessed to him. He stared at her in shock for a moment, unsure if he actually heard her correctly, until Kain decided to kiss him to prove it. Although this just left both of them even more embarrassed than before, it gave Mitsuharu the confidence to ask if they wanted to make things official between them - to which Kain happily agreed.

A few months later, both Kain and Mitsuharu successfully graduated, and planned to find a place together once school ended so Kain could be closer to her university. However, Mitsuharu ended up being roped into an expensive apartment lease with Akihiko and the other band members, and had no choice but to stay there and pay rent for two years. Although he did reluctantly uphold his end of the deal, he ended up spending most of his time at Kain and Shinju's place anyways. Meanwhile, Kain was working on her bachelor's degree while also working part-time at a local coffee shop to help cover her tuition. Once the band's apartment lease was up, the two of them decided to continue living with Shinju for the time being in order to save up more money for a future house together - a dream that didn't feel so far away by this point.

Relationships

Mitsuharu Ohtakia98ec4a697730667b20592ec40b51245664e42a6
Mitsuharu is both Kain's closest friend and crush, and the two are practically inseparable from each other. Despite the fact that she was terrified of him at first, their relationship grew extremely fast, and Mitsuharu sleeps over at Kain's house more often than not. She idolizes him immensely as well, though she's too embarrassed to ever admit that to him. Although she often has to keep him in line, especially when it comes to schoolwork, he's also good at reminding her to let loose sometimes and relax. She wants to confess to him, but has held back for a while, out of fear that doing so would ruin what they have.

Three months after the events of GOOD END, following a series of accidents, they end up in a relationship together.

Shin Aichi669bcd7e8d0b00211c40af06095e6df7e81ea375
Although they're in different grades, Shin and Kain attend the same evening cram school math class together. This led them to be better friends, as Shin often needs help with some of the work. Kain is happy to help her out with the problems, and in return, Shin frequently bakes her oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. The two of them, as well as Mitsuharu and Akihiko, often hang out and watch movies together or go out to eat on the weekends.

Akihiko Kagurazaka14f2c7e2be49f96bcfc3555a0291635692574f02
Kain only really spends time with Akihiko because he's one of Mitsuharu's best friends, but being a huge fan of his right from the start of Electric Dreams, getting closer to him  on some level was kind of like a dream come true. Although she admires him, she still recognizes how reckless and immature he can be. She usually ends up on the sidelines of his and Mitsuharu's antics, not willing to get involved but curious how everything will play out.

Yuma Misakic5358421ec3906dc2f7781366218736608518055
Kain and Yuma aren't exactly friends, but Kain aspires to present herself in the same way she does. She admires Yuma's outspoken nature and how she rarely backs down when she stands up for herself, and hopes that she can be like that as well someday.

Trivia

  • Her favourite colour is sky blue.
  • Her favourite foods include pickled plum onigiri, yakiniku, avocado maki, oranges, cucumber, and nori.
    • She likes all meats except for seafood, and the local yakiniku restaurant is a frequent hangout spot for her and Mitsuharu. She loves fruits and vegetables equally, and will often infuse oranges and cucumbers into her water. Sweets aren’t her biggest thing, but she does love fruit-flavoured popsicles and other cool treats.
  • Her favourite drink is orange juice.
    • Oranges are more than her “image fruit” - when she’s not drinking water, she’s always drinking orange juice. She’s immune to scurvy at this point.
  • Her least favourite food is seafood.
    • Part of her dislike for seafood comes from not wanting to eat things that come from the ocean, as it makes her feel guilty and sad. She also just doesn’t really like the taste.
  • When it comes to her meal habits, despite her best efforts, she can’t cook anything to save her life. She can’t understand vague recipes and directions, so she often ends up adding too much or too little of each ingredient, resulting in something that’s just barely edible. As such, she relies heavily on her sister for meals, as well as restaurants and a select few things she can prepare with help. She still ensures her diet is healthy and well-rounded by eating raw vegetables and fruits rather than cooking them into a big meal. Because she’s always on the go, she likes things she can grab quickly and take with her anywhere.
  • When it comes to her sleep habits, due to her active lifestyle, she tends to sleep more than average to recharge herself. Weekends are her rest days, where she sleeps late into the morning and stays out with Mitsuharu in the evening. She tries to go to bed at roughly the same time every night, but has a bad habit of staying up late and almost sleeping past her alarm the next day. Despite this, thanks to her bike, she’s never been late for school once.
  • She uses the personal pronoun "boku" when referring to herself.
  • She has autism and major depressive disorder.
  • Her best swimming stroke is butterfly.
  • In TRUE END, Kain's writing becomes the third Victim's Memoirs.
