Shin Aichi (愛知心 Aichi Shin) is a major character in Corpse Party: Forbidden Rebirth. She is a student of Misato Municipal Brotherhood High's classroom 3-6, and a victim of Heavenly Host Elementary School.

Shin is a playable character in TRUE END, a supporting character in GOOD END, BAD END and LOST END, and a main character in REVERSE END.

Design

Shin is a teenage girl of average height, with dark brown hair and red eyes. Her bangs are straight cut, and she has thick eyebrows. She wears her hair tied in two buns with thin pink ribbons. When let down, her hair reaches about midway down her back.

Her typical school uniform consists of a prussian blue sailor fuku with a white tie and a skirt that reaches just above her ankles. With it, she wears black tights and brown loafers.

Personality

Shin is a timid and sweet girl from Misato Municipal Brotherhood High’s class 3-6. With a loving personality and a sensitive heart to match, she cares deeply about the people and environment around her, and is always trying to do as much as she can to give back to others. Despite her skittish nature, she’s acquainted with nearly every student in the school - as the caretaker of her class’ pet rabbit, the president of the cooking club and a tutor for a few of her underclassmen, she’s become a cornerstone of Misato Municipal in the few short years she’s attended.

Although she’s popular and always surrounded by people who stick up for her, she has yet to overcome her shy personality, which manifests itself in her somewhat odd way of speaking and tendency to blurt out strange phrases and jokes that can be difficult to interpret. She has a habit of messing up her own personal pronouns, usually going back and forth between “boku” and “watashi”, and will often alternate between using “kimi”, “anata” and “omae” for those around her, even switching them in the middle of a sentence. However, her peers have come to recognize this as an endearing trait of hers, and think it’s a cute habit rather than a rude one.

She tends to misunderstand situations and jokes, which has led to her being viewed as an innocent and naive girl by her classmates, though this isn’t exactly the case. She’s just naturally oblivious, and often fails to recognize deeper intentions behind people’s actions - for example, the romantic intentions behind a love confession, or an attempt to make her feel bad with a passive-aggressive remark. Though this ignorance is part of what makes her so kind, it has also started something of a war among her classmates as they fight to be the first to win her true affection.

Shin hates having to say no to others, especially when they’re in a time of need. Even when she’s busy and working on a deadline, she will quickly drop anything she’s doing if one of her peers asks her for help. Her inability to set boundaries has led to her being taken advantage of for money, used for manual labour and caused her to fall behind in her studies. After some third years began getting her to do their homework for them, her best friend Yoshiyuki Shinohara appointed himself as her ‘bodyguard’ of sorts, in order to keep away people who may not have her best intentions at heart.

No matter what issues she might be personally going through, Shin always strives to be a positive role model for her underclassmen and help them out in any way she can. She makes it easy for others to open up to her, and welcomes them with open arms no matter what. Despite this, she’s extremely secretive with any information involving herself; she will make up elaborate lies when asked about personal or revealing information, though this is for the sake of her privacy rather than out of malicious intent. Because of this, many rumors have spread around school about her - some of her classmates believe she previously went to an elite private school and secretly harbors incredible martial arts skills, while others are insistent she moved to Japan from the United States and can speak perfect English, but she’s just too shy to do it in front of others. Of course, neither of these things are true.

Despite her cutesy outward appearance, she has a secret love of horror games and murder mystery novels, particularly Silent Hill and the When They Cry series. She has built large collections of merchandise for both of them, which stand in stark contrast to the other adorable decorations around her room. She’s embarrassed about her love for these series, feeling as though they’re too out of character for her nature, and refuses to let anyone into her room so as not to let her secret out.

Plot

Backstory
Shin was born and raised in an average, loving family, consisting of her mother, father and later on, her younger sister Kazuko. As a child, her favourite part of every year was when she and her mom would bake Christmas cookies for their neighbours as gifts. Though she had a big sweet tooth and often ate many of them herself, she loved being able to give people something she worked so hard on, and the adoration she got in return for it made her feel even better. Everyone on their street loved her, and would always say hello when she was on her way to school each day.

Though she had a fairly normal childhood, she was self-conscious about herself from a young age, often feeling uncomfortable in the clothes her parents chose for her, but she was never sure why. Even as she got older, these thoughts continued to grow with her, leading her to become a shy person who found it difficult to interact with others in case they were judging her.

Being nine years older than Kazuko, Shin was often tasked to look after her after school and on the weekends, which she never minded at all. One day while looking after her, they decided to play dress-up, and Shin allowed her to choose whatever clothes she wanted for her to wear. Even though the end results clashed heavily together, when Shin looked in the mirror and saw the bows her sister had put in her hair, she finally felt happy with her appearance. A bit of online research and a few tears later, everything fell into place - Shin had always been a girl, and that was why she'd never felt comfortable in the clothes her parents used to dress her in when she was younger.

It took her a while to gather the courage to tell her parents about her revelation, but when she did, they fully supported her transition and tried to make sure she was as comfortable as possible. At the end of her second year of junior high, they assisted her in transferring from her old school to Misato Junior High, as well as ensuring she would be provided a female uniform when she began attending. Shin felt more comfortable with herself than ever before, and despite her shy personality, she began to come out of her shell more and more.

After transferring schools, it didn't take long for Shin to make her first new friend, although their meeting was somewhat unconventional. On her way to class, she accidentally collided with one of her classmates, causing such a mess that she felt guilty about it for the remainder of the day. To make up for the incident, she decided to bake a batch of cookies for him as an apology - but when she delivered them, he was so embarrassed by it that he insisted they share them during lunch. It was at this time that he finally introduced himself properly as Yoshiyuki Shinohara.

While they ate their lunch together, Yoshiyuki’s bag was knocked over by one of their more rowdy classmates, causing its' contents to spill all over the floor. Still feeling bad about what happened earlier, Shin rushed to collect his things for him, but stopped short when she noticed a few loose leaf sketches haphazardly stuck in between the pages of his notebook. Yoshiyuki tried to snatch the drawings out of her hand before she saw them, but by the time he got a hold of them, it was too late. He shushed her before she could get a word in, telling her to keep quiet, and that they could talk more about it after school.

Although she was extremely intimidated by him, Shin decided to take him up on his offer, figuring it was the least she could do. Once they were alone together, Yoshiyuki finally explained that he was extremely embarrassed of his hobbies, and thought that they were 'too girly' for someone like him. Though she understood where he was coming from, she reassured him that it was nothing to be ashamed of, and it was better to just do things you enjoyed rather than worry about what others will think of you for it. Although she was never sure if her words actually helped him, their interactions were far less awkward after their conversation, leading them to become very close friends by the end of junior high.

Two years later, Shin was now a second year student at Misato Municipal Brotherhood High, and felt completely content with herself and where her life was now. One day, on the train ride home from school, she overheard an angry phone conversation from one of the underclassmen at her school. She recognized him as Akihiko Kagurazaka, the lead singer for an up-and-coming teen band - though, judging by the sound of the phone call, his parents were trying to take away those privileges if he didn't get his grades up soon.

After the phone call ended, Shin watched as he began rummaging through his backpack, inadvertently spilling his books and assignments onto the train floor. She quickly started helping him collect everything up, and introduced herself to him once they'd found all his things. She offered to help him study for the upcoming midterm exams, which he immediately accepted, leading them to schedule a few dates at a nearby coffee shop to work at. Thanks to her, his midterm grades were passable, and she continued to help him study even after they passed.

Heavenly Host

If you know nothing about Corpse Party, be sure to read through this quick glossary first! It'll make a lot of terminology easier when reading this section!

Prologue
Though not initially invited, Shin heard that Yoshiyuki was going to classroom 2-4 after school by Tomoe Mizuki's request and tagged along, since they normally went home together. Once everyone had gathered, she presented the Sachiko Ever After charm and explained its' significance to the group, before inviting them all to perform the ritual with her. The ritual involved holding a paper Sachiko doll in a circle, chanting and tearing the doll to pieces. Once everyone agreed and understood the rules, they tore apart the paper doll, and Shin put her scrap in her skirt pocket for safekeeping. Shortly after the ceremony, an earthquake occurred and opened a gaping hole in the floor that she and the others all fell through, leading them to Heavenly Host Elementary School.

TRUE END
A short while later, she awoke to find herself in the old school building, laying uncomfortably on top of something soft, but uneven. As she tried to prop herself up, she fell deeper into what she was laying on, and finally realized she was on top of a pile of bodies; recent enough to still retain their flesh, but still old enough that rigor mortis had clearly set in. She screamed and immediately tried to flee, but she didn't get very far - one of her legs had been stuck underneath one of the bodies, as though someone threw it on top of her while she was unconscious, and it had gone numb from the weight. She only made it about halfway down the hallway before she collapsed and began to cry.

Confused and scared, she cried out Yoshiyuki's name, and, to her relief, she got a reply from one of the classrooms down the hall. She forced herself back up and did her best to ignore the burning pain in her leg as she hobbled to the door. Sure enough, Yoshiyuki was in there - but when she ran over to give him a hug, his figure evaporated, being replaced by an old newspaper that fluttered to the ground. Unsure of what to do, she picked up the newspaper and started reading. It turned out to be an edition of the Heavenly Post, detailing the murders of the three child spirits that inhabited the school. She found herself unable to pull her eyes away from the report, but when she finished reading, she heard the classroom door slam shut behind her, locking her in the room.

She began to panic as she pulled and kicked the door to no avail; it wouldn't budge in the slightest, as though it were a decoration. She even tried removing the windows, but it only resulted in cuts and small glass shards being embedded in her skin. After a week, she'd exhausted all her energy - she was dehydrated, starving, and couldn't even sleep anymore because of how much pain she was in. It was a race to see what was going to kill her first, and it seemed as though starvation was going to win. As she lay dying on the classroom floor, she used the last of her strength to carve a message into the floorboards with her nails: “Whatever you do, don’t look at the newspaper.

GOOD END
Like in TRUE END, Shin was trapped in classroom 3-A, and assumed she was most likely going to die in there. She spent a few hours trying to escape, but eventually exhausted herself and rested to conserve her energy. She was settling against the wall and trying to calm herself down when the classroom door's lock clicked and swung open, revealing Yoshiyuki and Hatto on the other side. Shocked and relieved by the sight of them, she began to cry and hugged Yoshiyuki, explaining through tears how she'd ended up trapped in there. She refused to let go of him, forcing him to comfort her for a few minutes while Hatto investigated the classroom.

Once she'd calmed down, she questioned Yoshiyuki about how they'd managed to get in, and he told her the key for the classroom was in Hatto's pocket, though neither of them knew how it got there. Shin couldn't think of a good reason either, but told herself it was just fated that they were supposed to find her in that classroom - otherwise they might not have been able to reunite so easily. Once she was ready to go, the three of them made a plan to try and find the rest of their classmates and escape the school.

A short while after she was freed, another earthquake, this time caused by their classmates appeasing the child spirit, Tokiko, occurred. Once it was over though, Hatto suddenly became violently ill, and the group was forced to stop momentarily when he could no longer stand. He vomited up a black tar-like substance, which Shin initially thought was blood, but it made no sense since he had no physical injuries. In reality, it was actually the darkening purging itself from his body. Though she and Yoshiyuki were concerned, he told them he felt better now that it was out of his system, and with no other options, they continued pushing forward.

While wandering the halls, they came across an old, torn-up plush that resembled a black cat. Despite Yoshiyuki telling her not to pick it up, she snuck it into her backpack anyways, hoping to take it home and fix it up herself. However, just a few moments after, a large earthquake occurred that shook the whole school. Unbeknownst to her, these earthquakes enabled them to shift through the different closed spaces of Heavenly Host, and this one in particular was a result of the last of the three child spirits, Yuki, being appeased. Their other classmates had been appeasing the spirits on their own, and now that the final one had repented, all of the closed spaces of Heavenly Host merged themselves together. Not long after, all ten of them were reunited at last.

Once regrouped, they discussed everything they'd found out about the school, from its' many closed spaces to the child spirits that made it up. Tomoe explained to the group that they'd performed the initial chant incorrectly, and to get back home, they needed to perform the ritual the right way this time. In order to do it correctly, they had to chant once for everyone in the group plus Sachiko herself - and, since it seemed like all the spirits had been appeased, everyone agreed that now was the time to perform the ritual again. However, in the middle of performing the chant, there was an ear-piercing scream from the outdoor walkway that made everyone jump. Forgetting about the ritual for the moment, Shin and the group ran outside just in time to witness the principal fall from the school rooftop, stuck in a suicide loop. Without warning, everyone watched as Hatto silently climbed over the fence, waited for the principal to fall again, and picked up a key that had fallen on the ground next to him. The key was too small and dull to be visible, and everyone was confused as to how he'd seen it, but pushed their concerns to the side to pursue what was really important.

Tomoe reminded everyone of the sealed principal's office in the second wing, the one door that had remained locked the entire time, and they set out to open it. Unsurprisingly, the key worked, but the room itself just raised more questions. While investigating, Mitsuharu noticed a hidden switch in the space heater that opened a secret passage, and Ken found a fourth tongue inside the principal’s desk drawer. He told everyone that touching the tongue caused him to experience a flashback to another child’s murder, and Tomoe confirmed there was a fourth victim in the case, although she was said to have survived - however, the tongue most certainly belonged to her. Filled with questions, the group descended the secret passage's ladder to get to the bottom of the story.

The passage led them to the abandoned bomb shelter, where Sachiko herself awaited them at the end. Ken tried to offer her the tongue, but it only seemed to anger her further. Shin had the idea to give her the black cat plush she'd found, but quickly realized she and the others were completely frozen in place. Sachiko raised her scissors to Kokuhaku, ready to strike, but Ken pleaded with her enough for her to stab him instead. In the split second she struck him though, her power wavered enough for Shin to pull the plushie from her bag and throw it at her. The tongue combined with the plushie was enough to make Sachiko repent, and her spirit was freed. Tomoe urged the group to get out of the basement, as this was their only chance to escape. With barely any time to spare, she and the others made it to the outdoor walkway in time, and were freed from the school’s dimension.

Relationships

Yoshiyuki Shinohara44791df05dc2c9094b353844b3e75a395549dde8
Yoshiyuki is Shin's best friend, and they've been almost inseparable since they met in junior high. Despite how afraid she was of him in the beginning, she quickly warmed up to him and has no issues with him at all. Although he's sometimes unintentionally cold to her, she knows it's just the kind of person he is and doesn't take offense to it. She's not very aware of her feelings, but she loves him very much and hopes they're able to spend the rest of their days together.

Akihiko Kagurazaka14f2c7e2be49f96bcfc3555a0291635692574f02
Akihiko is one of Shin's close friends, and she's the only reason he was able to pass his classes and keep his band going. She enjoys his company, and doesn't mind when he follows her around to talk to her. When asked by others about their relationship, she always says he's a close friend and a bit like a brother to her. She is completely oblivious to his feelings for her, but this hasn't discouraged him from trying at all.

Three years after the events of GOOD END, Shin runs into Akihiko again when he visits her bakery, and the two end up dating a few months after.

Kain Hagiwara92d8f4f38b89739f8c29709e61e2e1f5c44cc086
Although they're in different grades, Kain and Shin attend the same evening cram school math class together. This is because Shin failed her second year math class, and is studying to try and get a passing grade. Lucky for her, Kain is happy to help her out with the math problems, and in return, Shin frequently bakes her oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. The two of them, as well as Mitsuharu and Akihiko, often hang out and watch movies together or go out to eat on the weekends.

Mitsuharu Ohtakia98ec4a697730667b20592ec40b51245664e42a6
Mitsuharu usually happens to be there too whenever Shin spends time with Kain, which led to them becoming better friends. She quickly took notice of how hungry he was all the time, and began making him lunches before she'd come over, which he'd often finish in under a minute. She treats him like an older brother, even though she's a year above him in school.

Hatto Sudoa77770b67850c449404f4944d543e3af9971ce73
Shin and Hatto aren't exactly close, and they more or less spend time with each other solely because they're both Yoshiyuki's close friends. Despite this, Shin cares for him a lot, and even asked Yoshiyuki for help in making sweets that Hatto would like. She wants to find some way that she can make him smile.
